Volume Two suffers a little from the Marvel fetish of cross-over arcs that span a dozen titles. There are some major events going on, but at a certain point you will begin to sense shit is happening outside your purview. I get this is a collection of Hickman's Avengers, but the changes in the story without explanations annoying.
The Avengers are about to run into the Builders and their massive fleet. They enlist Ex Nihilio and others and take their expanded roster, including some major alien races, against the Builders. Then stuff happens in other comics not included. The Builders' threat is replaced by Thanos. The Avengers assemble.
So if that rather nebulous summary did it for you-then this volume is up your alley. While I liked the art and the story that was included, my feeling of loss was not alleviated thus 3 stars because this story feels incomplete. Um maybe instead of 40 pages of cover art include some of the missing issues?
A headache to read. There are many missing pieces and it jumps from point A to B with no explanation. This is definitely incomplete and is missing a lot of content.
On top of that, The avengers as portrayed in this book seem to be unorganized, unfocused and extremely outmatched. There is also too much going on to truly focus and connect with anything in this volume. I usually like Hickman's writing especially his Fantastic 4 run but this was not an enjoyable read to me.
I much prefer the small moments in these volumes to the larger, chaotic, world-ending plots. Spider-man eating other people's meals in the fridge, Captain Universe facing her tragic past, Kevin's struggle to accept his new Starbrand powers. But I find it difficult (and honestly, boring) to follow the breakdown of the "systems" that allegedly organize the universe (multiverse?). And the motivations behind Ex Nihlo's attempt to "evolve" the world. Put simply, there are too many villains and crises with too big of stakes for me to care. But I keep reading for the smaller moments and for the very cool art. The otherworldly events of this series creates opportunity for some mindbending art, and it's a treat to take it all in.
Loved it and great art. You'll need to pick up some other volumes in the Infinity crossover, which was always great, to get the bigger picture of what's happening. I don't want to spoil anything but it's definitely worth the read.
Art is amazing and the story has extreme highs. But there is just a lot that I can’t follow here and some of the art becomes hard to follow as well in battle sequences. It sets up well for Vol 3 but this was mostly a slog at times
What is this nonsense? This is all over the place. Are there issues missing from other titles that contain part of the plot? It's borderline unintelligible. Art is pretty decent throughout, for which it gets another star.
The Spiral Arm of the galaxy is endangered by an armada bent on re creating life in their own image. All the starring empires in the Marvel Universe unite to fight this foe.The Avengers stand in the gap to defend Earth in deep space. Mean while in Earth space Thanos decides to attack a defenseless Earth. The story line is part of Marvel's Infinity arch and is told exclusively from the perspective of the Avengers. The art work is beautiful and stylized. The writing keeps an intensity high and ends the story on a cliffhanger Unfortunately the next volume of this 4 part story does not comet until February of 2016
