Fame, fortune, and paparazzi? No, thank you. Been there, done that.
All former child star Katie Sullivan wants is to live a normal life. She’s spent years burying her past, and she’ll do anything to keep it that way. Then one too many drinks combined with a dare has her asking out Wyatt Archer. Unfortunately, he's anything but low-profile, and she’s not about to give up her anonymity for some guy.
Except Wyatt Archer isn’t just some guy.
He's the best college quarterback in the country, and he loves everything that comes along with it-- like winning a national championship and having no shortage of girls. It’s never bothered him that the main thing they’re interested in is his potential to make it big.
Until now.
Katie’s different. Instead of basking in Wyatt’s spotlight, she runs from it, which only makes him want her more. Good thing he never walks away from a challenge, even if it means risking his heart.
Jessica Ruddick is a 2014 Golden Heart finalist for her new adult novel, Letting Go, which was inspired by her own college experiences. She lives in Virginia and is married to her college sweetheart—their first date was a fraternity toga party (and nothing inspires love like a toga, right?). When she doesn’t have her nose in a book or her hands on a keyboard, she can be found wrangling her two rambunctious sons, taming two rowdy but lovable rescue dogs, and battling the herd of dust bunnies that has taken up residence in her home. Back on campus for a little visit, you're always sure to stumble upon the football team's golden boy QB, a new girl who just wants to remain unseen and plenty of young lust -- and maybe even a budding new love.
This is the beginning to a new series (Virginia Valley University) and the first book was a good solid start and kept me entertained. I really enjoyed reading this one and loved the two main characters, along with their sidekicks, the great banter and interaction. The book is written well, character development is standard-fare, and very little to complain about EXCEPT at the goal post it ran out of steam resulting in a rather lackluster ending leaving me whimpering instead of cheering. Boo-Hiss!
A nice variation of famous football college quarterback and college girl. She's a former child star living quiet at a Virginia college. She really doesn't want to be found out. You see where this is going, right?
Her sister adds a bit more to the drama but you'll not care for her.
2.5ish stars (should I add another star for Ms. Rona and the havoc she's caused on my reading?)
I wanted to like it a lot more than I actually did. See, I'm having a hard time finishing a book these days so I get really excited when I find one that catches my attention. This one did, but I wasn't a fan of the writing - it felt like a significantly older person trying to write from a college student's pov. It felt a lot like this:
I was intrigued by the story, but like I said, this took me a LONG time to finish (much longer than usual, but I think I need to rethink my normal); I couldn't bring myself to read much each time so I had a lot of time (a whole day, basically) between each time. That gave me time, and when I saw something I didn't like, I fixated on it.
Like the lycra thing. I have to say, in the many years I've been alive, not one person has described their clothing as lycra to me/in conversation. Leggings? Workout pants? Sure. Same idea, right? I actually had to look up what the fuck lycra was, so there's that. And a few other things that made me go:
Also, a large portion of the relationship was established behind the scenes. I sound like every high school english teacher I have ever met when I say this, but there was a lot of telling and not enough showing. Like I'm just supposed to believe they point from one point to another just like that? Okay, if you say so, since you certainly didn't show me.
And so much internal dialogue, MY GOD! I wanted some actual dialogue. Interaction between the characters that didn't make me cringe, but that was too much to ask for.
My overall experience of reading this story was: . If you're planning on reading it, I hope you have a better time with it than I did.

DNF @ 41% I didn’t connect with either character. The first chapter was engaging and caught my interest but then the focus was on the Leading Lady and how she was once a child star. Honestly no one cares. Had she told her friends 3 years ago they probably would have made a big deal about it for a few months and been over it. Maybe brought it up when her twin had movies coming out or was in the news. That would have been helpful though bc she could have found support through them. Instead she lied for years about who she was. Her friends don’t even put two and two together that her identical twin is a movie star! Granted her twin has had some plastic surgery but still... she seemed so self absorbed about fame. Worried the paparazzi was going to jump out any second. No one has approached you in years - news flash you aren’t that big of a deal. The QB is on a date with her and he said if he stopped playing football this year no one would even know who he was in 5 years. I agree they wouldn't. She thinking of course they would he doesn't know about fame. Hummm no one has recognized YOU in years so that kind of proves his point. Ok end rant. Other part that I believe kept me from connecting was both of their inner monologues. We had a few words then pages of it. Then a few words and pages. Made the flow of the events very choppy and hard to feel a connecting at all.
I'm sorry to be the first not-so-great review posted. Just trying to be honest about my feelings about the books I've read. Sadly, this one didn't really work for me, which is a shame bec it had all the elements that I normally love in a book. Sports romance, twins, he likes her but she doesn't.
I wanted to like the story but I quickly got tired of the mental agonizing, all the over-analyzing, that was happening, especially on Katie's part. The story has this angsty feel to it that I just wasn't vibing with. Lastly, I feel like that the book ended too abruptly. One more chapter after right where it stopped *and* an epilogue would've been nice; but then that's also because I'm an epilogue junkie.
When a former child star does everything she can to escape her past she will find herself once again in the spotlight. When a college football player rises to her challenge this story soars.
A nagging sister and family drama make way for obstacles to overcome. Despite their differences, they will realize that they can't live without each other. Both are willing to risk everything for love.
Assumptions, family obligations, and a chance to live life on their own terms. Loved this book! The story has great pacing, laugh out loud moments, a cute furry friend, and a lot of tension. I can't wait to read more from Jessica!
But the writing almost made me put this in the DNF bin… it starts off repetitive. Katie is just on repeat about her fear of the past and how she’s now a nobody. Also there are simple copy edit error (she puts on her &*#@-me books - eye roll how hard is it to,copy edit your book???). So if this kind of thing doesn’t other you then it’s a good story and Katie and Wyatt have good chemistry (once she gets out of her own way).
This book missed the mark for me unfortunately. It had everything I like when it comes to tropes and as I local girl I loved the location the story was set. The quality of the writing was good and the characters were likable and relatable. What made it such a miss for me was that it was so bogged down with internal monologues. The vast majority of the story is about their inner thoughts and struggles. The MCs don’t even have that much interaction. The ending also left me unfulfilled as there was no real solution to any of the stuff the struggled so much over.
Umm hello! Where has this story been all my life? Wow. I’m completely blown away by Jessica Ruddick. I had no idea what to expect when it came to this book. I was a little apprehensive at first because it’s only rated 4 stars on Amazon, but…guys…this is absolutely a 5 star novel. Holy crap.
Wyatt and Katie are explosive from the moment they meet. Katie was a child star, who is hiding from her past. Her twin sister is still very famous but also well known for being very trashy. Katie wants to separate herself as much as she can from that old life. She changed her last name and is going to college to become a doctor. Our book opens on her junior year of college, she’s out with her friends partying, and she sees her crush across the crowded bar. Wyatt is the star quarterback for the college team. He’s basically famous and everyone is obsessed with him. Katie’s friends dare her to ask him out on a date. She does. He says yes. VOILA! Our love story begins.
Okay, so I’m not going to lie…I think Wyatt may be one of my ultimate book boyfriends. I have a very short list, but holy hell. He is incredible. The way he treats Katie, the way he cares for her and holds her opinion above all others…HE IS AMAZING. I could go on and on. He’s dedicated and passionate, he’s smart and witty. He is also humble and generous. And we can’t forget about how loyal he is. Man, this guy is an all around rockstar. Katie couldn’t have asked for a better partner. My favorite thing about Katie and Wyatt’s relationship is how they communicate. Even though Katie doesn’t reveal who she is to Wyatt at the beginning, she shows an understanding that he hasn’t received from anyone else before. It draws him to her. On that same note, Wyatt makes Katie feel safe and secure. The way he speaks to her and listens to her, it all just works. They are a perfect pair. LOVE THIS COUPLE!! 5 stars!!
I received this book in ebook format first for Free to Give My True Personal Review.
This is My First Book that I've read by Jessica Ruddick & I'll definitely will read more of Her Work again well at the very least The Virginal Valley University Series.
Here is an old Childhood Actress Katelyn Sullivan whom walked away from her acting career as a young teen but her new school peers weren't the nicest towards her & it WAS at that moment that She DECIDES to go by Her Birth Name Katie Sterling so NO ONE at Uni whom she actually was. But it's when after a few drinks she goes up & talks to QuarterBack Superstar Wyatt Archery 'The Archer' & their relationship moves HOT 🔥 & FAST but it's not until AFTER a photo was taken & posted online that a 'secret' was ousted & Her Uni Best Mate Rachel said that She & their other 2 Besties 'the Double D's' Destiny & Dani had ALWAYS KNOWN , but the one whom didn't had been Wyatt & it's the words that comes out of her mouth destroys them UNTIL a Paparazzi photographer saw her & Her actress Twin Kassidy Sullivan Came into town & caused an accident & Wyatt's next mate Freddie called & gave a horrid description of the accident, CAUSED a massive Kick up the AR*E... But does it work out for the 2 or them, EVEN IF/ WHEN he becomes a National Superstar.... Great Audible
So, for anyone who loves the university romance trope, In the Pocket is a fun read. The story follows Wyatt, a star quarterback with a bright future ahead, and Katie, a former child star determined to keep her past a secret. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the tension between Wyatt’s growing fame and Katie’s desire for privacy creates an engaging dynamic, one that had me hooked.
In regard to the story itself, overall the pacing was great, like I said they were so well-suited for each other, I was invested in their journey, and I genuinely enjoyed watching them grow together. However, if I’m being honest, and peeps—don’t hate, but the ending left me a little unsatisfied. It wrapped up a bit too quickly, and while I was happy for them, I kind of expected a bigger moment or grand gesture to really seal the deal; maybe I got a slice of that with Katie’s grand gesture of I love You, I don’t know. It wasn’t a deal-breaker, but something definitely felt like it was missing. *let me know in the comments if you felt the same.
That said, Jessica Ruddick has serious talent! She kept me entertained, hooked, and invested in the characters the whole way through. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good quarterback romance, especially if you’re into that “jock searching for his queen” vibe.
This was my first opportunity to read a book by Jessica Ruddock and I have to say I was engrossed from the very beginning and I couldn't put my Kindle down. I loved the character development in this one. I especially loved the interactions with Angela and Freddie throughout the book.
While I have no first hand experience of what Katie went through in her childhood as a child actor, I understood why she wanted to keep that separate from her current life. As her relationship with Wyatt grew, she should have trusted him more to understand why she struggled with bringing spotlight while dating him.
I know that her words hurt his ego and pride when her identity was revealed, but he should trusted more and let her explain what she was feeling. He gained a better understanding of what she dealt with as a child star and the momager only looking out for herself. when Katie went to see to him, instead of trusting and really listening to her, he pushes her away and shut her out because of his wounded ego and pride.
I really enjoyed this first book in this series and I can't wait to read the rest and learn what happens with Katie and Wyatt as time goes on.
Katie knows what it’s like to be in the limelight, and it's not all it's cracked up to be. Being chased down by the paps is no fun in fact, it’s frightening. But since she first saw Wyatt she was infatuated with him. Yes, he’s sexy as sin and all those tattoos and muscles are nothing to sneeze at. But, what is even sexier is his brain. Yup, you read that right his brain. On a drunk dare, she asked out the quarterback, and now she's having dinner with the star quarterback. He’s not just another dumb jock but when reality sets in the next day she tries to get out of said date, and he knows it and doesn't give her the easy out.
He asked if she wanted to reschedule even though he was in a bad mood. When he picked her up he was still in a bad mood. So she gave him grief. However, that’s what he likes most about her, she doesn't take BS from him or take his hype seriously. No one knows it, but she used to be a child/teen TV actress. She used to be in all the tabloids and on red carpets. Katie and Wyatt have unbelievable chemistry; as they grow closer, they're both breaking their own "rules" about relationships. The story will grab you from the start. I am so glad I read this love story that explored opposites attract.
I have fallen in love with this new series by Jessica Ruddick. From the moment I began reading Wyatt and Katelyn story I was hooked. I loved the story line and the characters. Wyatt is a football player who decides he wants to finish college before he enters the draft. He knows that when he cannot play football anymore he needs something to fall back on. Katelyn was a child star. She decided to leave that life so that she could have a normal life. She left her twin sister and her mom behind so that she could have a quiet life out of the spot light. What happens when her and Wyatt cross paths? What happens when something simple becomes complicated? Pick up this book and find out because I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am for sure going to be reading more books by her. I am also anxiously awaiting the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.
Katie's a former child star who's done with being famous. She just wants a quiet life, and to finish college. She asks Wyatt out on a drunk dare, and now she's having dinner with the star quarterback. She knows he&'s not just another dumb jock - he's fascinated with her because she doesn't fawn all over him. She's trying to stay out of his spotlight. And trying so hard to stay out of the spotlight of her past. No one knows who she really is, and she'd like to keep it that way. But what happens when someone realizes just who she is? This was a great book. Katie and Wyatt have unbelievable chemistry; as they grow closer, they're both breaking their own "rules" about relationships. The story grabbed me from the beginning, and I'm so glad to have read it. First read from this author, I'm looking forward to her next book.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this story about Wyatt and Katie. Katie and her twin sister, Kassidy were child stars, but Katie decided she didn't want that life anymore. She moved with her dad and went to a normal school, while Kassidy stayed in showbusiness. When she's our for a friend's birthday party, they dare her to talk to Wyatt Archer, star quarterback. Wyatt remembers Katie from class and agrees to the date she throws out there. He is drawn to her since she's not like everyone else, looking for game. If anything she shies away from it. The begins is a great HEA after since serious trouble.

I’m all for happily ever afters but that ending was so rushed it’s hard to believe that the two leads could even go the distance. I didn’t really connect with either Katie nor Wyatt and because of that it was hard to feel any chemistry between them or to the story. Overall the reading experience was completely cringe and at times frustrating. The climax when Katie and Wyatt came to blows and Katie went to apologize, coupled with how they got back together made for a disappointing read. If this book is any indicator of how the author writes for the rest of this series, I believe Katie and Wyatt will be the first and last story I will read from this author as a whole.
This is so my type of book. It has romance, humor and a little of sassiness Drunk Katie is so hilarious “Drinking too many fruity drinks, throwing myself at Wyatt, having even more fruity drinks, exuberantly announcing to Main Street that I was dating the Archer. “Oh God.” Wyatt has been added to my recently book-boyfriend list *without a doubt* I don't know if theres gonna be another story about them... I hope so, the end was kind of cliffhanging. if not, it would be awesome to have an epilogue

The storyline has huge potential but the way the book ended was kind of lame. You don't get closure as to what happened to the two main characters of the book except that they're together for now? I know this is a series but the Nextbook isn't even a story about these characters it moves onto two different characters and you're still left in the dark. The author is a good writer she does do well to put the story together but leaving it the way it was I hope that there's another story in the future that will showcase these two main characters and if they end up together in the future.
The main female character is kind of annoying. I understand that she doesn't want to be recognized for being a former child star and twin of a current celebrity, but does it need to be brought up multiple times a page? She comes off conceited and immature. How did Wyatt even fall in love with Katie? She was pushing him away and being a flake from the beginning. He should have just walked away when She flaked on him after the Sonya thing. Her mess was worth it. I'm glad the book wasn't longer because I started wanted to give up around the 74% area and if it had been any earlier in the book, I probably would have stopped reading.
I loved this book and the journey the characters went on, especially Katie. Sometimes secrets find a way out eventually as we saw in this book. I definitely feel the relationship between Katie and Wyatt was developed well, and the story of them both experiencing the limelight at different points in life makes for a good contrast in viewpoints too which helped develop their story. It was a great read and kept me on my toes a lot with the drama. A few laughs along the way too made this book a great read. The ending seemed to come so soon and abruply, I wasn't ready for the story to end. Thanks to the author for a good story
This was an awesome book that I really enjoyed. The story and characters grabbed me from the beginning and I couldn't stop reading. I loved the characters and watching them grow together, they were well written and went well together. I found this book amazing with great word building making me feel apart of the story and watching it unfold in front of me. A definite must read for any fan and I can't wait to read more from this author!!!

Katie wants to leave her celebrity status in the past however things are about to become complicated when a few drinks too many and a dare finds her on a date with the one man on campus who commands media attention wherever he goes.
Wyatt is the star quarterback for the college football team who is destined for a bright future. Most women are happy to be with him because of the attention he attracts but Katie wants to be with him despite it. Will she be able to keep her past a secret and what happens if she can’t?
It ended too fast for me. But, I love a good sports romance, and this one was stellar. Katie and Wyatt had great chemistry together. Both are smart, hard-working, and good-looking. But, Katie is keeping an explosive secret, while Wyatt hates liars. Will Katie’s secret ruin their relationship or will Wyatt forgive her, and they will then move on as a couple? There’s also some awesome supporting characters and a kick-ass love story that kept me totally entertained! I just wanted more of an ending...
Yep, it’s easy to read, but I just didn’t get the vibe I was hoping for.
The FMC came off as shallow, and the MMC wasn’t any better. When I picked it up, I wanted something cozy to dive into, but ended up sighing in frustration at every inner monologue two of them had.
The moments that could’ve actually carried the plot were rushed. I fs wanted something light, but this book just feels completely superficial. I really tried to like it, but unfortunately-
If you love sport’s story and I do, this is one you can’t not read! This has wonderful characters that has a hot quarterback that is used to having women throwing themselves at him but when one runs the other way it’s a sure fire way to get his attention! This is a wonderful storyline and characters that will pull you into a great story. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
