A Boyfriend for Christmas

Rate this book
Archie's posh parents want him to meet a nice girl--how can he tell them he's fallen for a bad boy instead?

Closeted, innocent and lonely, Archie Arandale longs for someone special in his life. A Christmas party organised by his wealth management company is the last place he expects to meet the man of his dreams.

With his leather jacket, tattoos, and piercings, Cal Turner turns heads the moment he walks through the door. He definitely isn't looking for a boyfriend, but Archie's hesitant charm captures his attention, and sneaking off during the party to have a little fun can only make a dull evening more interesting.

After their reckless and thrilling encounter, Archie is keen for more experience and Cal is happy to oblige. The need for secrecy means this can only be a casual fling, yet as they spend time together in the run up to Christmas, their feelings become more intense than either of them had bargained for. How can Archie find the courage to tell his family about Cal, when Cal's the exact opposite of the 'nice girl' they've been hoping for?

Contains: A closeted virgin, a tattooed biker, class differences, a dramatic coming out, a very inappropriate Christmas gift, and a happy ending (of course).

If you want an utterly sparkly and SEXY holiday read featuring British boys and an opposites-attract theme, look no further. A Boyfriend for Christmas is all that and leather pants that unzip from the front AND back. Oh, hell YES, baby, talk about easy access.

Cal and Archie couldn’t be more different. Archie comes from a wealthy, posh family. His accent could cut glass. He’s polite and well-mannered, and completely repressed. Archie is a virgin because he doesn’t dare, but he has all kinds of dirty desires.

Enter Cal: tattooed, bad boy extraordinaire. Cal is Archie’s wet dream. He’s buff, wears leather, and rides a bike like the road belongs to him.

Initially, Cal and Archie agree that their make-out sessions are nothing serious. Archie wants to explore, and Cal is all about showing Archie how good a man’s touch can feel. Of course, the no-commitment rule doesn’t last long. Cal and Archie get on too well, and while there’s not a lot of relationship development, there’s enough that I was cheering these guys on, especially when Archie screws his courage to the sticking place and finally comes out to his family.

Cheers to Cal’s friend Danny who encourages him in all the right ways (and gives him penis confetti for Christmas cause that’s what friends are for); Archie’s sister Lottie who’s not nearly as snooty as she seems; Archie’s friend Fiona who serves as the perfect beard (but not for long); and Cal’s mom who welcomes everyone in for tea (as it should be).

Special shout-out to gay virgin sex, because, DAMN, Archie is all about it, and Cal gives as good as he gets (in ALL the ways).

This is a low-angst, high-steam holiday story with two delightful MCs and a tentative HEA. I was a little miffed at how the epilogue kind of trailed off (where were the proclamations of love??), but I was satisfied nonetheless.

This is my holiday story for 2019. Even though making the deadline nearly broke me, I really enjoyed writing this one. It has plenty of humour and sweetness and made me chuckle while I was editing it. If you decide to give it a go, I hope you'll enjoy reading it :)

A Boyfriend for Christmas by Jay Northcote is a stand alone, holiday MM romance that is my very first book by this author. I’ve had several of Jay’s books on my to read list for some time now and I chose this one to finally jump in. I’m so glad I did. I loved it!

Archie Arandale is twenty one years old. He is the youngest of his family and has never quite felt like he fit in. His parents are very wealthy, referred to as posh. He has always been expected to work at his father’s finance company after he finished college but he is not the least bit interested. Archie’s parents are forever trying to match him up with one of their wealthy friend’s daughters. It’s all he can do to keep them under control. Because there is one big secret he has kept from his family, has kept from everyone. He is gay!

Cal Turner is twenty nine years old, is a tattoo artist, rides a motor cycle, and is out and proud. Wherever Cal goes, people notice him. When Cal’s best friend goads him into attending his wealth management company’s Christmas party, he thinks it will be the most boring night he could imagine. Only things started looking a lot brighter when he laid eyes on the adorable, shy Archie.

Archie is inexperienced, shy and closeted. Cal is none of these things. But the attraction between them is electric! When they agree to a little fun together, it was just supposed to be the one time. But both wanted more. Cal had no interest in a relationship but the more time he spent with Archie, the more he fell for him. These feelings are completely new to him. And how would that even work with Archie scared to come out to his family?

I enjoyed this so much. I really liked the way the author told the story. Archie was so shy but also so brave. He just fit perfectly with Cal. And of course, I couldn’t resist falling for Cal and all his tattoos! This was a perfect introduction to this author and I can’t wait to read more.

Yet another story that didn't feel very "Christmassy" to me.

Most of the story revolves around the relationship between Archie and Cal. It's very light and straightforward, though I found the writing style and the story line too simple for my taste. Also too much sex and not enough holiday vibes.

The good thing is that I really liked both main characters. I just wish there was more depth to everything.

There are so many bits of this book I want to quote but I won't spoil the absolutely brilliant moments when they appear in the narrative.

For me, this is one of Jay's funniest, and hottest, reads and I couldn't put it down.

On first look, it might sound like your typical opposites attract romance but it's so much more than that.

Cal is totally my type, dark, tattooed and a biker in leathers. But Archie caught me hook, line and sinker, just like he did Cal.

There are some true gems in this book, from Cal's best mate Danny to the lovely Fiona, who Archie's mother is throwing at him when our two heroes first meet.

The pacing is unhurried, the chemistry off the charts and the tensions arise naturally from within the plot.

Definitely one of my favourites from Jay.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

The first thing that comes to my mind is, that it was all oh so British... in the best way:) The book hasn't felt very festive to me, but it was an easy, fast paced and cute story about a closeted nice boy from a wealthy fam and a slightly older out and proud tattoo artist and biker. Both MC seemed authentic and genuine, I really enjoyed the contrasts between them (different backgrounds, different sexual experience) and also the contrast between who Archie is and who he wants to be... The supporting characters (Fiona, Danny, and Lottie) were amazing and added fun to the story. I appreciated also the social bits like capturing homophobia and how difficult the coming out could be, which made a great part of the story. Nevertheless, it was simple and straightforward and felt a little bit flat to me. Overall though, it was a sweet and spicy read, and it had a great flow to it.

There are many things that the holidays bring that I look forward to; Northcote’s annual holiday story is definitely one of them. I can count on sweet ‘n sexy with a dash of charm. A Boyfriend for Christmas was all that and more. From the surface it may appear to be just another opposites attract romance, but Jay takes us deeper. Yep, we navigate differing family dynamics, insecurities, and acceptance. When Cal Turner shows up in all his leather glory at his financial investments company’s Christmas party the last thing he expected was to meet someone. Flip the coin, and Archie could say the exact same thing. Their attraction is instantaneous and scorching but they are simply too different. Besides, Archie is deeply caught in the closet and has no intention of rocking his family’s…yacht. But as Cal helps Archie nudge the doors open, Archie suddenly realizes what he’s missing. Dipping his toes into the well of self-discovery brings him into a place he doesn’t want to leave. But will he lose his family while embracing his true self?

What's to like: I always enjoy how Jay balances lighthearted moments tinged with serious tones. Archie has never felt confident in his family’s acceptance of his heart’s true desires. And it’s not just the charmed life he’s accustomed to and his job that could be on the line, but he could lose their love and respect. And he’s just not sure it’s worth it. Then again, he’s never had anything or anyone to risk it for. Then Cal walks into his orderly life and everything shakes and rattles. Cal couldn’t really be interested in Archie, but he might as well have some fun. Or could it possibly be more than a hot holiday fling for Cal after all? Hmmmm….what do you think?

What's to love: I loved Archie from the moment he graced the pages. Bonus! I also adored Cal from the start. I could see they were a perfectly imperfect fit and couldn’t wait to see how Jay was going to make all my wishes come true. On target with Northcote’s reputation, it was H.O.T. but it was also sweet and tender. I was so smitten with the secondary cast, I don’t think I can pinpoint a favorite. I love surprises and was thrilled Jay slipped in a few. Captivated from the beginning, I didn’t stop until my face was split from the ending. If you have holiday traditions as I do, add JN’s Christmas stories to your list. I have no doubt you’ll be looking forward to next year’s story too!

Beware of: More adorable moments than angsty moments. A delectable discovery. And the conclusion that swanky and inky do indeed work well together.

This book is for: If you’re a fan of opposites attract that delivers the full package, I’d highly suggest you snag this lovely Christmas tale.

Probably my favourite of Northcote’s holiday stories, A Boyfriend for Christmas is a charming opposites-attract romance, between motorcycle riding, bad-boy tattooist, Cal, and upper class, shy virgin, Archie.

Cal and Archie are hot for each other from first glance, and despite their obvious differences in life experiences and class status, their chemistry is undeniable. The sexual exploration and eventual relationship development that ensues is easy, sweet and damn hot, if I do say so myself.

I love how unapologetically British all of Northcote’s stories are, too. The characters, their circumstances, their environments and their relationships always feel so realistic, making the reader feel like they’ve been transported across the pond (unless, of course, you’re British, in which case, I hope the stories read true to life, too).

This was one of my more enjoyable book picks this holiday season, that’s for sure. As always, Northcote has delivered a unique and endearing story, featuring what is, to me, a distinctive and remarkable voice in the M/M romance genre.

In Britain, (Bristol) closeted, blonde Archie, 21, is a virgin, lonely and yearning.

Cal, 29, tattoo artist with a Harley, is the bad boy Archie yearns for.

They meet at an investor's party, because Archie is in the family business, and Cal has funds invested.
There begins there secret affair, so Cal can teach Archie what he wants and Archie gains experience. This is a smooth, humorous, serious, deeply though filled journey.
Their sexy times are superior with hotness, revelations, and first time's excitement.

The side characters are marvelous, the plot moves along steadily, and the "coming out" handled beautifully, despite the few homophobic gits.

We see the conflicts, the progression, and the culmination, when emotions and passions escalate.

The guys are wonderful, and we see their pasts to show us what they are all about.

A well done tale by Jay Northcote, once again, I'm happy with this story, too.
Highly recommended !
ENJOY !

Young, blond, twinkie virgin Archie and heavily tattooed, bad-boy Cal are just a pair made in heaven.
And there are more differences than the visual ones – Archie is a posh boy from a very affluent background while Cal is pure working class. Archie has never even kissed a guy while Cal keeps relationships as far away as he can.

This is a lovely case of ‘opposites attract’ and Jay does a fabulous job with it. Loved all of Archie’s firsts and the way Cal is protective of him right from word go, how he makes sure Archie’s first gay sexual experiences are fun and glorious. Also loved how feelings seep into their ‘arrangement pretty soon and how ILYs aren’t thrown around like candy, with a realistic relationship development instead.

I also chuckled at some of the name choices which do remind me of certain British celebrities. The name of Archie’s father (Piers) is particularly well chosen! :)

Definitely a tasty Christmas morsel, sweet and spicy and leaving you with a contented sigh!

Have fun with this one!

"Just to be clear, I’m not looking for a relationship. I thought I should let you know that before we hook up again."

How I hate it when MCs feel the need to say this in books. I don’t mind them thinking it and then it turns into a relationship anyway, but to explicitly mention it beforehand…. such a turn off.

And it’s not like I was really enjoying it anyway. I wasn’t that infested in the first place.

Not really Christmassy, but very cute. And very British.

I honestly can’t stop smiling. Was it perfect? No. Especially the ending was a bit TOO fluffy and unicorn-ish for me. But it was cute. And surprisingly hot.

It’s the story of Archie, who’s from a “upper class” English family (his father had something to do with finance). Archie is 21, gay, closeted, a virgin. And not really used to standing up to his family.

Cal on the other hand is a tattoo artist who won some money a few years back, and who has invested some of it via the company Archie’s father works at. He’s covered in tattoos, rides a bike, and shows up wearing his leather gear at one of the gatherings for investors.

It’s the classic “opposites attract” trope, and yes, it’s cliché, but it’s so cute and so very British (even when initiating sex), that I couldn’t help but smile almost the entire time while reading it.

And yes, the ending is a bit sweet, even for me. But wouldn’t it be nice if coming out to your family would be so easy? And we all know there’s nothing you can’t solve over a cuppa tea when you’re English. To quote Cal’s mum:

“I’ll go and put the kettle on”

For that alone (and for the smiles) I’ll rate it with 4 happy stars 🤩 thank you, Vanna, for making me pick it up!

For the last four years it has become a Christmas tradition for me to read Jay Northcote’s new Christmas story, this was my sixth.

I enjoyed this, I liked Archie and Cal, they jumped straight into the sex, Archie is a virgin, so Cal is the teacher and Archie is the willing student, ready to learn and try anything.

I did not find this very Christmasy compared to other books by Jay, if you want to read one I recommend Stuck with You, last years book that made it onto my favourite shelf and I think I will be reading again this month.

A Boyfriend for Christmas by Jay Northcote has been one of my most anticipated holiday books- between that blurb and lush cover, how could it not be? And I have to say it lived up to my expectations. It was fun, sexy, heartwarming, and swoony.

Some highlights:

-The characters. I loved Cal and Archie, everything about them and their personalities complimented each other so well.

-Alternating POVs.

-Opposites attract, not only different personalities but different backgrounds.

-Hallmarkesque Holiday story rated M for Mature, contains sexual content. ;)

-No unnecessary drama.

-I love the friendship between Cal and Danny. I want to go out for drinks with them- they're so much fun and care so much about each other.

-And the end made me feel warm fuzzies.

My only niggle is that I wish the book were a bit longer. I wanted to stretch the relationship development a little more. All in all, though, this was a great holiday romance.

A Boyfriend for Christmas is about acceptance, family, friends, and loooove. I truly enjoyed it, a lovely Christmas romance.

3.5 Liked it stars!! 💞 So the story was nice, low angst, with the opposites-attract trope; but despite the title , it wasn’t really Christmas themed 🤨 In fact the plot could have happened anytime of the year.. 🤷‍♀️ It was steamy and smutty though with a super hot tattooed MC; so quite enjoyable 😉❤️ Highly recommended to fans of all the above.. 👍🏻👍🏻

Cal and Archie couldn’t be more different if they tried.

Archie - rich, shy, inexperienced, from a cold family, and very much so closeted.

Cal - working class, tattooed bad boy, has a great mum, and doesn’t hide any part of himself.

Yet from the moment they lock eyes at a posh Christmas party, the mutual desire in undeniable. Cal brings out the daring side of Archie, and for the first time in a long time Archie feels free.

The two men come to an agreement - no strings attached. Archie gets to explore what he’s been missing out on, and Cal is more than happy to be his teacher.

I have to hand it to Jay Northcote - these were some killer sex scenes. The two men aren’t only just sexy together, but fun and willing to explore. The bit of kink and Archie’s submissive streak were very pleasant surprises!

description

But the simple arrangement gets complicated pretty quickly. It doesn’t take Cal and Archie long at all to begin wanting more than just a romp in the bedsheets.

While the transition from strangers to tentative kind-of-boyfriends happened quickly, it was very sweet. The two brought joy and comfort to each other, which each man needed in his own way.

I thought it was absolutely precious how Cal gave Archie the bit of confidence he needed to feel comfortable trying all the experiences he’d wanted for so long - whether that was in his personal or professional life.

As is to be expected, the big stumbling block is Archie’s family. I thought that dynamic was handled well, and realistically.

Also kudos to Lottie for being much more than originally meets the eye! And to Danny and Fiona for being amazing friends.

The happy ending was sweet, but was just missing a bit of oomph. A bit more relationship development throughout the book would have been nice to really tie everything together.

Overall, this was a sweet and sexy holiday romance; easy to read and fairly low on the angst.

Not too overly Christmas-y this has a nice storyline to it with well developed characters and nice relationship development. I felt this had a pretty good steam to story ratio for a holiday story and that it worked well, although I would have enjoyed a bit more oomph in the second half.

I am on a freaking roll this year with queer holiday romances. Tinsel, Snowflakes and Song Lyrics, and now A Boyfriend for Christmas have all delivered different, but wonderful, holiday stories I've no doubt I'm happily going to revisit in future holidays.

If Tinsel had the Grinch-y flavour I was in the mood for, and Snowflakes and Song Lyrics was the ultra-sweet Hallmark-esque magic, then A Boyfriend for Christmas adds something for the naughty list right off the bat, and then wraps that naughty present up with holiday cheer (and not just a little dash of phallic confetti).

The blurb does a great job with the set-up, but I want to add how much I adored gruff, inked Cal and adorable, genuine Archie, who is posh and just starting to come out of his shell in multiple ways. Their immediate click at a rich event—followed almost immediately by more than clicking in the men's loo—sparks off massive change in both their lives. For Archie, that's facing down his very Tory, very uptight family (and maybe even coming out to them), and for Cal, being willing to consider something more for himself than maybe just a series of no-strings-attached hook-ups.

There are some solid side-characters, Cal's long-time buddy Danny, and Archie's newly-met friend Fiona among them, and those friends shore up both Cal and Archie in key moments which I always love to see in stories where queerfolk are facing down massive life moments. There are laughs as well as pains (the older I get the less patience I have for "endless queer angst" stories), and the coming-out scene is brilliantly balanced with bravery, nervousness, and snark. Three cheers for Archie.

If you're looking for sizzle, there's a lot to be had here, too, so fans of sexier novellas will get to have their Christmas pudding and eat it, too.

This story was just okay for me. I thought the two characters were likable but the story read a little too much like a Cardeno C novel where there is zero angst and the transition from hook-up to boyfriend is a little too seemless. I needed a little more angst to make this holiday story sing in my heart.

Wow, I did not expect such a good story, complete with explicit and very steamy sex scenes as the virginal 21-year-old realizes it's time to let go of old behaviors and come out of his closet. He chooses tattoo artist and biker, Cal, a guy who won the lottery, took care of his mom, bought the Harley of his dreams, and invested the rest. These two are so sweet together. Sure, typically, they start as a hookup. Cal is worried that the innocent Archie will want more. What he's not prepared for is that he is the one who wants more.

Archie's family are wealthy, posh, and apparently homophobic, or at least he thinks they are. Cal's mom is a sweet hippie sort who is very down to earth. Together the men make magic.

Honestly, Jay Northcote--you rocked this one! I love your work and always enjoy the holiday books but never as much as this one. Maybe it hit all the notes I needed to hear this week and others might not appreciate it as much but I am making this my #1 holiday story for 2019. Loved it!

2.5*. Not my favourite of the Christmas romances I’ve read, though I appreciated parts of it very much. Cal and Archie are from very different backgrounds; one a working class tattoo artist who won the lottery, and the other the youngest son of a wealth management magnate. They meet at a swanky Christmas party (which Cal arrives at in leathers, on his motorbike) and have a searing opposite attracts moment. But I found the development of the relationship between then quite flat, and it’s unclear what they like about one another aside from the intensity of their physical attraction.
