This wasn’t a bad read, for sure. The writing was lovely and easy to follow and it was nice to see black characters being written as real people instead if caricatures.
However, I felt this lacked a real message or theme. I know it’s considered a prologue than a standalone story, but so many characters being introduced in one small piece can be really hard to make them all well-rounded. I thought John and Ross were better characterized than even Rosa Lee in some places, and the children were there, but not very memorable.
The length of time this prologue spanned also (two and change generations) was also a stretch considering the length of the work.
But I liked the characters, I liked the tree planting. I liked the relationship ties and the close-knit feeling of this extended family’s small world. Quick little read, very interesting.
I immediately started 'If I Could Die' after finishing this book. Breathtaking, beautiful, touching, and the beginning of a story about two children touched by the death of a mother and grandmother. When Bo's co-worker said there was something or someone next to him after he fell off the roof and advised him that maybe God was involved I just kept reading. Rosa's garden and Virginia loving to grow things. A wonderful story with descriptive dialogue and deep characters.
We always want more for our children but sometimes the choices they make after you've helped them make more of themselves than you had still brings them up short.
