A story loved by all ages, a tale to fuel the imagination.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the first page. A magical piece of fiction for young an the older generation alike and I would highly recommend it.
Well....HS Matthews.....I would never have thought this to be a new author ! Absolutely LOVED this book.....superbly written, lots of adventures, twists & turns, surprises and shocks. Totally enthralled in it from start to finish. Brilliant read. I really cannot wait to see what happens next to Lottie and her friends !!
I absolutely loved this book. I am the type of person who takes weeks to read a book, but this one was so captivating that I couldn't put it down. It is really well written and held my attention. Cannot wait to see if their is a sequel. Keep it up H S Matthews.
Lottie Jones and the Magical Realms: Dragoran by H.S.Matthews is a good children's story. It's listed as being suitable for 'Young Adult's' but personally I think it should be listed as being suitable for children, although I hasten to add I don't have children of my own so maybe I am mixing up when children start to be thought of as young adults. Personally, I would recommend it for children aged 9 or 10 to 11 or 12.
The book tells the tale of Lottie Jones as she learns that she has magic and is destined to become the protector of the 12 (I think!) realms. The story is told using relatively simple language so it's not an overly complex read but it's intriguing, compelling and full of twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout.
I really enjoyed Lottie Jones ATMR:D but I would have preferred it if more of the story was told in the narrative. The majority of the book is written as though it's Lottie's personal memoir or diary. So, for example, 'I told Mum what I had done at school and then she asked me to go upstairs and get cleaned up for dinner' (I hasten to add, that's not a line from the book, I made it up to illustrate my point). I would have preferred to have had the conversation's written out throughout. However, I wonder if the author wrote it specifically this way because of her target audience.
The story of book 1 ends on a cliffhanger, and actually I've already started the second book, which builds on the first one and is written with more dialogue. I'm already really enjoying book 2! More on that to come.
This book will delight fans of Harry Potter. Lottie, the protagonist, is an ordinary girl with a loving family and filled with excited anticipation of moving to the ‘big school’ where she is quick to make new friends. Her fascination with stories of magic and mystery soon become part of this mundane reality when Lottie suddenly finds herself thrust into her own enchanted world. It begins with dear Aunt Aggie visiting to disclose extraordinary information about Lottie’s destiny: a destiny which involves a power struggle within the magical realm of Dragoron. The ensuing story is action packed and includes the sad loss of important people in Lottie’s life; portals being used to access other dimensions; energy blasts to penetrate forcefields and restless dragons in need of assistance. Captured and imprisoned by the mysterious Lord Amara, Lottie has to rely on others to set her free while discovering betrayal among those she trusts. The story ends when a dark family secret is uncovered and a prisoner escapes which means Dragoron may still be in danger. HS Matthews has a writing style which easy pulls the reader into her world of escapism. I look forward to the continuing story in the forthcoming sequel…
Lottie Jones is a seemingly ordinary teenager with extraordinary talents. She goes to school, likes making friends, likes to be on time everywhere, enjoys spending time with her family. In total she is like any other teenager. But her world changes one Christmas. She comes to know that she has magical powers and she is going to be the high sorceress, who protects all the realms. This first book deals with Lottie's coming to terms with her magical powers, her insecurities, her apprehensions, her training, her meeting other people who have magical powers, her troubles ,her sacrifices and all the other incidents which happens for the first time in her life. Very imaginative and well written Lottie Jones and the Magical Realm takes the reader to a world of it's own. That world is full of magic, fantasy and some mystery. Written in such a way, which makes the book very easy to read and fast paced. The descriptions are praiseworthy. The reader will be easily be able to envision the fantasy world and the magical episodes. A must read for all fantasy lovers. Highly recommended.
What a unique and fresh story in the YA Fantasy world!!
I am a huge fantasy lover and I really got sucked in to this wonderful world very fast. Of course with any Fantasy book I always go in with high expectations and the Author did not disappoint when they delivered this wonderful story.
Lottie and her friends have to save the realm while she is becoming a sorceress. I love how you get to see everything a diary point of view when she is telling you about her adventures and about the things she saw and did. It makes it feel like you are more connected to the character, as if you are sitting right there on their bed reading it each day after they leave the house.
I have some thoughts and predictions on where I think book 2 is going since it ended on a cliffhanger but I can't say that here because it would be a spoiler. I hope the author gives me a curveball because I really like to be wow'd.
The world building is exceptional here even with the different POV that we are hearing the story. I feel like I could envision the world around me.
An inventive and enthralling adventure. Most of LJATMR: Dragoron is written from the POV of school girl Lottie, who, with her normal life hit by tragedy, begins to learn about her own magical powers. As she discovers new dimensions leading to a world of knights and dragons, Lottie encounters some dark characters like Mr Finch and Lord Amara, who are obviously up to no good. Overall, the book has a colourful range of personalities and an inventive plot-line to bring them together. Naturally, it leaves you dangling at the end to entice you back for some more. Books in this genre will often be compared with Harry Potter, and I was amused to see the odd HP cameo appearance, such as with Lottie and her friends watching HP films on TV. I would probably categorize this as an older-children’s read rather than young adult, as the structure and language are uncomplicated, but I think anybody from 10 years old to 100 might enjoy this book.
Lottie Jones thinks she’s a normal teenager, but she’s very wrong on that front. One fateful Christmas, Lottie’s parents, as well as her Aunt Aggie, reveal that they are sorcerers/sorceresses, that they have magic, and Lottie does too. Lottie’s destiny is to be the High Sorceress of all the Realms, but she’ll need training before she can accomplish this goal. Along with her three best friends, who are also magical, Lottie must face many trials on her path to becoming the best High Sorceress she can possibly be.
This book was super original, and quite lovely!!! Matthews has a very unique writing style that works for the genre. This YA fantasy novel is perfect for teens and young adults!! Lottie was a character that many young people could relate to, and I’m sure her next adventures will be just as enchanting!
I received a copy of this book from the author, and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I don’t ordinarily read much fantasy so this series was a something a bit different and an exciting find for me. In this first book of the series, Lottie finds herself on a world-twisting adventure involving new truths and magical creatures. There is tragedy (“they were lying to me, my heart was pounding, the world around me was spinning”) and there is beauty (“a magical place full of green meadows”, “the sky was the most amazing colour blue”) offered to you in the addictive world created by H.S. Matthews. I also really loved the cover as it seemed to communicate a lot about the actual book. The only note I’d suggest is I would have liked to have seen some shorter sentences to keep the suspense. Other than that, it was a fun, easy read and I liked this book a lot.
A decently paced story set in a world with magic. Lottie is destined to become the next High Sorceress, but she must be trained to use her magic first, which she just found out about. Along with her friends Ben, Sarah, and Emily, they will train and use their magic to protect the realms. Things begin to quickly turn dark as people begin to go missing or end up dead. Traveling to the realm of Dragoron is a nice addition, with the scenery descriptions painting a wonderful picture. There were a few twists that I didn’t see coming, especially at the end.
I recommend this to anyone who likes YA fantasy. It has magic, dragons, and mystery.
Thanks to H. S. Matthews for giving me a copy of this book!
This story was a surprise! It manages to be original and unexpected, while remaining close to the classic Hero’s Journey. Charlotte is a lovely character, and the care the author put on her development paid off. I do feel it’s a book almost exclusively aimed for teenagers, since the way it’s written reminded me more of a young woman’s journal than a novel. I missed some dialogue earlier in the story. The discoveries at the end bring this first book into a rewarding conclusion, and the path is clear for Charlotte to continue her learning and adventures.
I really enjoyed this, I wasn’t sure if I would find it too young for my taste or to keep my interest but HS was telling the truth when she said this book is for the ageless.
Matthews paints a vivid and magical world. Lottie was unaware of her magic and quickly has to learn and adjust. She also isn’t sure who to trust and listen to. Bad & strange things happen and she and her magical friends need to work together to protect everyone.
Lottie’s powers are linked to her emotions, the stronger the emotions, the power powerful the magic. It’s a powerful weapon.
Magical and Mysterious World of Sorcery and Dragons
The Author, H S Mathews has created a fantasy world of sorcerers and dragons that rival the wizardry world of Harry Potter. And Lottie Jones, the young heroine of the book is every bit as precocious yet formidable as JK Rowling's Harry Potter, but she is not by any means a Harry Potter clone. This book is imaginative and so well crafted that you can vividly see the world of magical realms in words. With more stories to be told, this sure to be a long and enjoyable series.
A delightful idea for a series of books that promise every child’s wish for excitement, variation and adventure. My expectations of a gentle smooth ride were soon thrown – one minute everything is too perfect and I was itching for more conflict, and the next I was shocked by truly awful events. Not sure how a younger audience would cope with such extremes. There are many parallels with HP and the picky editor in me struggled with the preference for commas, but it didn’t stop an enjoyable read. I always looked forward to picking the book up again, which is the acid test!
This is the first book in the Lottie Jones and the Magical Realms series. This series is targeting middle grade, however being a grown adult I really enjoyed them. They are both fast paced and well written. The storyline is great, I think any young person has always wished there was talk magic in the world - imagine finding out that there is, and that you have a huge role in saving the world. If you are looking for a good fantasy read, get these books.
Making new friends is never easy but rewarding when it finally happens. The necklace shocked me. I love how these children find out that their world is changing and they just roll with it. They are more like an adult than some adults. I love Alfred and King James. The dragons are adorable. The love they have for each other (family and friendship) in this is amazing. The action is good and so is the storyline. I enjoyed it.
Lottie Jones and the Magical Realms: Dragoron by H S Matthews is an exciting fantasy adventure story that keeps you intrigued right till the last page. The thing I loved most about this book was feeling like Lottie Jones herself was telling me her fantastically magical tale. I also really loved the themes of family and friendship. I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves magic and dragons.
Loved this book, it did take me a couple of chapters to really get into it, once the magic started I was hooked. It has everything a good YA fantasy ought to have, dragons, magic and excitement. Have added the next two books to my reading list. I highly recommend this to people of all ages.
Lottie Jones is a very strong character, and not a young girl to be bossed about! She's worth a few smiles, and this book also contains dragons. Love a good dragon in any story!
I enjoyed this story! There's nothing I love more than to explore a new world, which this book had in spades,. It would be a great first book for any young reader interested in delving into fantasy.
"My dreams were filled with castles and dragons". Such a fab book, so much adventure. Lots of sad and tough stuff that happens in Lottie's life and all before she's 16, she is so strong! A very magical book, so interesting, there is always something happening. Lottie is so strong for such a young girl. She takes on a lot and copes so well, a fab read! I recommend this book as it keeps you on your toes and is well written. Can't wait to read more!
A story full of magic, dragons and of battle between good and evil. It is a great story, with a strong ending. I think teenagers who like to read fantasy, will absolutely love it. The Realm is threatened by a dark force, Lord Amara. Amara needs Lottie to fulfill his plan. Lottie just discovered her magic and is still in training to become the next High Sorceress.
The characters are all likeable. But Lord Amara? Who is he? Can I like him in the end as well? Will I have compassion for him? I need to find out in the next part.
The only thing I had a problem with, is the writing style. Many repeated phrases. Many times they all agreed. 'He went on to say', 'We were soon stood'. Typo's. Me vs I; He vs him; She vs her. If that could be improved, it would be a 4 star for me. At this moment:3,5. The description of the valley of the dragons was beautifully written though.
A sweet and fun tale for younger readers, Lottie Jones and the Magical Realms: Dragoron, is the story of a young girl who discovers she is part of a magical community existing alongside the normal world of humans.
Whilst not aimed at my age group, it was a nice story and I found myself wishing my daughter was still young enough for me to read it to her. Young children tend to enjoy being “told” a story and she would have appreciated the simplistic writing style and lack of complex layered character emotions which as an adult I needed for the story to gel with me. But, as I said, this book wasn’t aimed at someone of my advanced age and is perfect for a younger audience.
It is this lack of being shown what the characters were experiencing and feeling that has made me give four stars instead of five, for a little less telling and a bit more showing would have fleshed out the story and made it more accessible for an older reader.
However, I was very aware when reading it that this book was not aimed at my age group and made allowances accordingly. I think readers in the age group of ten to thirteen will enjoy this book and relate to Lottie and her friends who are the main characters.
When Lottie Jones starts secondary school she’s nervous about the change – but little does she know just how huge that change is going to be…
Following a visit by her aunt, Lottie finds out that pretty much everyone she knows – her mum, dad and friends Emily, Ben and Sarah, all possess magical powers. Furthermore, she and her friends also have a special destiny, to become High Sorcerers and protectors of the Magical Realms. Soon Lottie and her friends are learning magical skills in a special class at school and beginning to make excursions to the realm of Dragoron, where kings, knights and dragons abound. But no sooner do they find out about the Magical Realm than events take a sinister turn that will break Lottie’s heart and force her into a precarious and perilous destiny…
Dragoron, the first part of the Magical Realms series, is a great read for middle grade readers – and for grown-ups like me who love Harry Potter! It establishes well the fantastical world, blended with ours, that Lottie and her companions will explore – and more importantly defend – from the evil Lord Amara and his servants. I like that family and friends play major roles in the drama and loved the twist at the end. Recommended!
DRAGORON is a delightful place of wonder. And it has dragons. What more can you want?
As an avid reader, Lottie Jones loved good books transporting her to worlds and adventures she could only dream of. Or so she thought.
Lottie was so excited about her first day of secondary school, but inspired by her favorite series, she longed for a school full of magic. Magic, something else she thought not to be part of her existence. Was her thinking correct?
The answer is where the story begins, taking a firm hold on all who enter.
H.S. Matthews provides a wholesome fun time spent with endearing characters coming together and joining their gifts. There is much to learn as the saga continues.
Lottie Jones and the Magical Realms: Dragoron is a fast paced story perfect for fans of portal fantasy and magic.
I found the use of first person, past tense interesting, and the light dialogue makes read as if Lottie is recounting the events of the book. It took some getting use to, as I don't normally read books that tell stories in this manner, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment at all!
There is quite a bit of jumping around as the story reaches its climax, I personally would have liked a bit more time in the world of Dragoron so that things might feel a bit more fleshed out.
H. S. Matthews does a wonderful job keeping the reader hooked throughout the book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fun and easy fantasy read! I'm looking forward to reading more of Lottie's adventures in the future!
I always struggle with reviews, especially when I'm reviewing something this good! as I am always tempted to blurt out everything I loved and enjoyed, but I also hate spoilers, so I have to hold back!
When I started reading Dragoron I could feel myself travelling back in time. The author did a great job and setting the scene, it was as if I was back at "Big School" myself, experiencing it all alongside Lottie!
The story is well paced and keeps you entertained from start to finish, you can't help but want to know what happens next!
It is a book, and no doubt a series, for everyone to enjoy. Both myself and my 12 year old son enjoyed joining Lottie on her magical adventure and can't wait to read the next book.
