Can you imagine being confined to a cramped deck on a stinking, overcrowded cargo ship and being tossed around on stormy seas fearing that the ship might break apart at any moment? These were the conditions endured by the 102 passengers of the Mayflower when she sailed to America in 1620, and were the inspiration for my novel Running With The Wind.
The story follows Jedediah Trelawney, a young man on the run, as he struggles to adapt to life at sea. Inspired by a self-taught physician and the ship's surgeon, Jed nurtures an ambition to learn the healing arts, and dreams of a future married to fellow passenger Desire Minter. But John Billington has other ideas. A hostile individual, Billington believes he knows about Jed's past and blackmails Jed for food rations in return for keeping his secret. Jed must find a way to silence Billington forever, or risk losing everything, including his life.
Inspired by the true events of the Mayflower sailing, this is a fast-moving, gritty tale about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.
