I just blew through books 1-4 in this series so, to save time I am going to give them all the same review. First, if you enjoy straight-forward D&D style stories you should be able to enjoy these books. They aren't great but good enough.

I'm a pretty critical reader and so my criticisms follow. If you enjoy simplistic D&D style books you may want to skip the rest of this review and just try out book 1 in this series.

In book 1, the MC is transported to a D&D style world by a goddess. The goddess chose the MC because he would become a "manipulator" in the new world. Manipulators are magic users who can sense and interact with manna directly. This means a manipulator can prevent , for example, a fire mage from casting spells. As a result manipulators were hunted to extinction by the other mages years ago.

This leads us to the first truly stupid aspect of this book. The MC's big plan to not be killed by other mages is to tell people he is an air mage. However the MC puts no effort into this. For example, the MC doesn't learn what an air mage can do and attempt to mimic that. Neither does the MC put any effort into finding a place he can live safely. He just stays put in the city he is dropped into in spite of it being the center of power for the mages that want to kill him. The MC doesn't really even attempt to learn how many continents or seas there are. Nor does the MC attempt to learn how mages detect manipulators or even the general abilities of mages. I kept expecting the mages to discover the MC by simply scrying for him.

In the early books the author's failings at writing fight scenes isn't obvious since it doesn't apply to the MC & co. attacking a dragon. In book 4, however, the MC & co. fight a bandit gang and it seems pretty clear that the author doesn't really think about these scenes. For example, the bandit leader starts the fight not by attacking anyone but by pointlessly throwing a smoke bomb. This is supposedly a prepared ambush so why didn't the bandit have his entire gang kill the MC & co. from cover with spells, arrows and bolts? Instead the bandit leader throws the smoke bomb and disappears from the fight while all of his fellows are killed. Then, rather than running away, the bandit leader pointlessly attacks the MC, an attack which, even if successful, would still get the bandit leader killed by the rest of the MC's party. (There is an even worse scene where the MC and co. attack an entire ballroom full of 100 people but, fortunately for the MC, they each wait their turn to be killed.)

The MC never experiments with his magic. Over and over again the MC is in a fight, wants something to happen, it happens and that's it. For example, in book 1 the MC breaks his knife in a fight and out of desperation creates a manna blade for his knife. Afterwords does the MC attempt to lengthen the blade or change its shape in any way? No. Does the MC attempt create an entire manna knife so he doesn't have to carry around his broken knife for 4 books? No. Does the MC attempt to create the knife away from his body so he can strike enemies from a distance? No. This is just stupid and shows a lack of imagination on behalf of the author.

The MC also never practices knife fighting and yet he can fight better than trained guards and people who grew up knife fighting. This makes no sense but then it makes no sense that the MC only ever carries a single knife. The need to hide his magic in no way prevents the MC from learning other weapons.

Bottom line: There is a lot of unnecessary stupidity in these books but, if you can turn off your brain and enjoy a D&D style story you should be able to enjoy these books.

A grand magical adventure

Logan has several series that I am really enjoying, and this is one of my favourites. The magic is interesting as is the MC’s powers, which being illegal, makes his continual use of them in every fight a considerable risk. This book is a good mix of action, mystery and intrigue but the mysterious bad guys identity was too easy to guess. Be warned there are a couple of sex scenes. The author is interested in knowing if any readers would be interested if any of the characters got pregnant in a future book (posed in a question at the end of the book). I think it would add some extra flavour if one or two of the ladies did get pregnant (as he takes no precautions), and exploring if the child inherited his illegal powers would provide additional story components I wouldn’t mind the story exploring (but don’t slow down the action too much). Which ones would I choose ..... Yvaine - added complications of being an unmarried Baroness, but wealthy enough to handle it - also a more minor less action based character. I might also consider Lavinia - as a badass and coming to terms with motherhood would also be interesting counterpoint.

Another good book

I skip the second book but the third and fourth had good pacing and action. This one had a couple points that I forced myself to read but on the whole I couldn't put it down. For the end notes my thoughts are that his relationship with the women should establish. I know that the archer and healer don't care about his multiple partners but what about the fire mage or the countess? I know it's a harem book but what about the orc and halfling, do they get girlfriends too? Also I like the sex scene to mesh with the group and story, ie are they satisfied with the limited amount of time he sleeps with each of them? They seem to come to him randomly and never overlap in when they feel the need have sex. I Have no preference who gets pregnant but it would help to ignore how they only seem to want him without that overlap I mentioned. This would not have been a problem if he only had two girls but all the good stories either give him superior endurance or weave the scene in seamless.

I'll be lazy and do a two-fer covering GoM 3 and 4 since I read them back-to-back. These are competently written, especially for the genre, although there are few elements I could do without. The attempted comic relief of the foppish orc and in 4 the blood-thirsty halfling just didn't hit the mark for me. Otherwise the MC is sensible and the harem seems well balanced if a bit 2-D individually.

Also, since Logan asked in the end notes to 4, yes, I think Gabriel should knock a couple of the women up. Specifically Levina (who may or may not have been kidding when she told him she wanted a baby) and Yevaine (sp?) because I'm sure she wants one too. The latter has the potential to make things interesting (noble titles, etc.) so definitely her.

Adventurous Fun

Another fun story in the continuing saga of our misplaced (repurposed?) mage, along with old characters and new (including some hits by steely Dehn). More fights! More intrigue! A cat-girl who tosses up fire balls! Fancy balls in fancy clothes with unsophisticated attendees (including our team)! Semi-blind sewer crustaceans on the hard shell! Gorgonzola! And - queue the Barry White track - Romantic shenanigans abound! Ohh yeah...

Definitely fun, definitely adventuresome, and definitely not for tweenagers. I’m not sure where this ride is headed, but I’m strapped in and ready for the next climb.

Ramping up

The Shadow Fox guild foils a bandit attack and stumbles upon a deeper conspiracy. Whilst trying to unravel it, they encounter other bandits, monsters, and new adventurers. Although peripherally all seems to be well with with the shadow guild, there is the sense that there is a trap slowly closing around Gabriel. Are there going to be any babies soon? Is Maruk going to find a fellow fashionista? Are his cousins coming back? They were so fun. Look forward to next book.

Happy Guild, Happy Bigger Do Gooders

You think your smarter and stronger then others, but you are compelled to do what's best for others, and your friends in your guild back you up. The main reason here is major thefts in a city that's overly lax in its own protection and all the wealthy houses. After a foiled attempt by a group of thriving guild members, the Shadow Foxes become personally involved in solving a crime that will soon occur. Through twist and turns.. Surprise at the end, Happy Ending!
Already getting the next book.

I really didnt expect there to be a 4th book but I am not complaining.

It was a really great book and I wish I could have read it more slowly than I did. I like how each book is a bit like it’s own story, with a different end goal and a different “villain”. Keep up the good work Logan!

As to the question asked at the end of the book, I would think that all of Gabriel’s girls would be and interesting mother material and I would especially like to see Lavinia with a kid.

Awesome series

The books in this series are great. The background of each character are good to hear about and understand. I think Gaberiel should get his harem pregnant. Be cool to entwined his girls with the idea of getting them pregnant and meeting all of these parents in the future books.

Success Continues For The Shadow Foxes.

After reading the first 4 episodes of the God Of Magic, what with Gabriel having sex with all the females, it would seem strange to not have at least one get pregnant. However, having them all pregnant at the same time would kind of weaken the guild don't you think?

Once again!!!

I have to say that it's a good problem, for the readers and reviewers to repeat themselves and run out of ways to congratulate and praise your books. This is a great book and another great addition to the series and Logan Jacobs works.

Silver Foxes Power Up

Gabriel shows himself to be a competent leader as well as a powerful mage, as he leads his Guild to victory and protects them when in trouble. I like the action, humor, and lust\romance. I look forward to the next book.

Controversial

I enjoyed the question posited, whether the MC should get his girlfriends pregnant. I personally would like that, but if they all became pregnant at the same time, the guild will be stuck

Not a lot to say about these books, they're pretty formulaic. Take a bounty, find a thing, find a thing, find a thing, final fight. It's competently done, but doesn't exactly entice me to return to the series. It doesn't help that it doesn't seem to be building towards anything.

A delightful romp in the woods

Yeah, right ...Just kidding. The Shadow Foxes don’t do romp. They might have a few fights and contain a few mages and generally raise a ruckus. And that is the best way to describe this story. A good read.

Solid addition

Solid addition to this series. I like how his guild is increasing with not just females. I like the idea of pregnancy maybe his children will be manipulators.
