Us, Again

"It's really him. The former love of my life. The man I gave everything to, who broke me so badly the pieces never healed back together properly."

Graham Wyatt is 6’2” of irresistible muscled, tattooed, angsty Alpha male (and don’t forget the man bun) ...but sorry, ladies! He’s a one woman man. Specifically, Mackenzie Thatcher, the love of his life whose heart he broke 5 years ago. Now that he’s out of prison (yes, prison…it’s a long story) he’s back to prove he’s reformed his bad boy ways so she’ll give him a second chance.

Mackenzie Thatcher has vowed off love forever. She's already experienced excruciating heartbreak, and she has no intention of ever getting near that particular fire again...especially with the very man who burned her in the first place. She’s perfectly happy being a badass independent woman, thank you very much. That is, until seeing Graham again stirs up feelings she doesn’t know what to do with (besides a little quality time with her B.O.B.)

She’s won't give in easily, but he isn’t afraid to play a little dirty. (Like that time he showed up to her yoga class and took off his shirt…) Graham is determined to do whatever it takes to win her back, even when some drug-dealing demons from his past show up and threaten the progress he’s starting to make.

Can Graham keep from repeating his past mistakes and find redemption with the woman he loves?

Debut Novel for Elle Maxwell. And let me tell you people...

SHE KNOCKED IT RIGHT OUT OF THE PARK!!!

What an awesomely rich a vibrant second chance romance! I loved every second of reading this. Graham was so freaking awesome and full of real emotion and conflict. He was a real damn character. Not this alpha cold-ass asshole crap. NO, he was beautifully flawed and so dedicated and in love with Mackenzie. Sex scenes were pretty darn juicy!

And Mackenzie was pretty awesome too. But I am really on team Graham all the way.

All the secondary characters were really great. None of this useless bestie banter with pages upon pages of retelling shit. No. It was a natural flowing story where you really feel the deep layers of love the MC's feel for each other.

Loved the story. Loved the cover. Loved the characters. Loved it!!!!

I enjoyed this so much.
At first, I thought it was going too fast, but it didn't bother me. I was soooo down for them to pick up from where they left things off even before reading what Graham did. Reading the reason behind why he was away for 5 years made me want to give Graham a punch ;c But he had issues with himself that explain those actions (therapy is always important).
Amé a Marisa.
Amé a Griff y Shaina.
La portada btw... La super amé.
The cover made me want to read it jijijij

Fucked up as it is, every bit of my soul is yours.

Drama and second chances

Okay these two have been together since 10th grade but he starts using drugs and hanging with a bad crowd. There is a murder and he goes to jail but he gets out after five years and he goes straight to his girl. But she is dating someone and he hurt her because he never wrote to her once in those years. She has dated, and drum roll please, even had $ex with other people. He was celibate. And guess what, I felt the same way as I do when it's the guy that moves on and the girl stays celibate, I hated it. But it's realistic I know but bah humbug to realistic. He loves her so much and they get back together pretty early in the book and then it's lots and lots of $ex. Too much really but hey they were back together. There is a story line of someone trying to kill him and those he loves, in retaliation for his brother remaining in prison while he is out. It was just okay for me. I think it's just me but I didn't really like the heroine. I can't fault the author. She writes extremely well and I would read her again. I loved the hero even though he had messed up bad! He was just so in love with her. And the heroine was okay too but just not great. I got a little bored and skimmed through all the intimate scenes. I did love the epilogue though.

Super damn sweet

While yes, this story has some serious heavy topics we can’t ignore that this book tempers that with so much emotion, so much sweetness. We have two deeply damaged people trying to find their way back to one another and I’m totally here for that kind of second chance. I’m a huge second chance romance lover and this one was solid.

Side note: this cover sucked me in and is the reason I read the blurb and needed to try it. Honestly A+ artwork because it was so worth the read. Kudos to the artist.

An ex-convict and the girl he left behind????

Yep.

Typically I’m not obsessed with second chance romances, but I’ve read a number of them this year I have enjoyed. So I guess there is a right way to do it.

Elle Maxwell’s debut consists of the perfect mix of angst and sweetness. The romance is a touch too quick and I was frustrated with the back and forth (...and back and forth) that continued even after we presumed the couple was back together for sure. So this should probably be 3.5 stars. But I’m a sucker for character driven stories and the characters and their relationship in Us, Again were so perfectly constructed, I was hooked all the way through.

I’ll certainly add any future Elle Maxwell novels to my TBR.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review:

I think a solid 4.5 stars is required! Sometimes, the characters annoyed me, but honestly, I understood where they were coming from, so I only knocked off half a star (seems fair)
This was a fun quick read! I thoroughly enjoyed, I can't wait for [Maxwell's] next work.

Anyone who knows me enough knows how much I enjoy second chance romance. I think I can admit I'm a little bit biased when it comes to this trope, because I find it hard to not enjoy a book with it. As soon as I read the synopsis for Us, Again (and saw that gorgeous cover... because I am human and can admit that sometimes I judge a book by its cover) I was dying to read it. So thankful to the author for allowing me a chance to read and review this gem!

First of all, this is Elle Maxwell's first published novel, and I was definitely impressed! I think she has a lot of potential and this one definitely left me excited to pick up anything else that she releases in the future!

When it comes to the story itself, I enjoyed it a lot. It had the right amount of sweetness to counteract the angst (which I love), and I definitely felt the connection between these two characters from the moment they first see each other again. From then on, I found myself rooting for them.

Although I thought Graham was an awesome hero (I love reading about characters that made bad mistakes in the past but turn their life around, its for sure one of my favorite types of heroes), the spotlight was, for me, on Mackenzie. She was just so damn awesome, and I loved her. I loved how strong and mature she was throughout the story, and I loved watching her tear down those walls she built for so many years with Graham. I think there's nothing that proves strength more than being able to open up to love again after being hurt in the past, and this just showed how strong she truly is. Not only that, but I enjoyed reading about a heroine that put her heart to the side and allowed her brain to make decisions, no matter how hard those decisions are. She was just incredibly inspiring to me and I loved getting to know her.

My second favorite part was the side characters! I am all for strong female friendships, and this book had a trio I loved to pieces. Mackenzie, Marisa and Shaina's moments were sweet and funny, and I loved that they found each other.

Lastly, the romance. Like mentioned previously, their connection was definitely there, and I could feel their chemistry throughout the book. One of my favorite things about second chance are flashback chapters of the couple's past, because it allows you to not only feel their connection more strongly, but also to see their growth individually and together as the years progressed. Although this story did not have those chapters, I felt like the author did a good job of telling the reader about the character's past throughout the novel, and the lack of those chapters didn't take away from the romance at all. Their romance was sweet but also angsty, and overall very satisfying. I do warn that unlike many other books with this trope, it was not exactly a slow burn! But i felt like it was very well done and paced, and it didn't feel at all rushed.

I also appreciated the talk on mental health in this book! I love books that bring awareness to it, and I thought it was done very well and respectfully which I always enjoy!

All in all, this was a strong debut for Elle Maxwell and a very sweet and well written romance. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys the second chance trope, or someone who might enjoy it a lot but doesn't like slow burns. I can't wait for Marisa's book!

Stopped reading at 20%, then skimmed the rest. Pretty much what you can expect from a debut book. Very cheesy and unrealistic. He's been in love with her the whole five years apart, stayed celibate (didn't really have a choice), she dated and had sex with other guys, not great sex, but I was fine with it because he didn't have any at all.

It felt very insta love to me, even though they were together before, we don't really get any substance on their relationship. I never thought I would EVER say this, but I felt like we needed flashbacks for this book, to at least give us some of their past chemistry instead of just being told about it. MCs kept saying how well they were together and in love and sexual tension, but it was so bland, that I wanted to skip over even the sexy scenes.

He was obsessed with her the whole time and wanted her back right away, literally EVERY thought was about her, and it made this book very two dimensional. Normally I love celibate hero's and how obsessed they are with the heroine, but it got very annoying especially because they lacked chemistry. He definitely needed more flaws than just his past. She was also very eh. Her personality was the same as a stick, nonexistent. She was very stoic and boring. From what I read in beginning, she blamed him for their break up and him spiraling, but did she every really, actually try and help him?

This was also a wordy book. I felt as if the author was constantly trying to use bigger words to make her writing seem smarter or something. There are some great quotes, maybe too many, buy they were probably the most interesting part of the book.

Overall, just okay, may or may not read this author in the future, probably when she has written a couple more books with more experience.

Ah, swoon!! I loved reading this debut romance. I was initially intrigued by this stunning cover and further intrigued by the synopsis for this book.

My favorite part of this story was the hero gone to prison at 18 aspect. I found it so interesting to read about a hero who misses out on some of his most formidable years after being incarcerated for 5 years. Graham returns from prison and looks up his high school sweetheart, Mackenzie. He finds her studying to become a psychologist and convinces her to give him a second chance.

I haven't read many romances where the hero is sort of naive due to being secluded from society. I really enjoyed how Mackenzie was a support system for Graham after they get back together. Graham was a very well rounded character with a lot of emotion, which I appreciated. Mackenzie was incredibly mature and fairly badass, to be honest. She was the perfect compliment to Graham. They were both swoonworthy characters with all the passion!!

The story had some insta love qualities that aren't my favorite but thhe author provides a lot of background to give the reader a reason to understand their head over heels attraction.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🔥🔥🔥

I am very much looking forward to more from Elle Maxwell!

I once read a quote... someday, you are going to be somebody’s favourite author. Well after reading this hidden gem, I can say without a doubt, Elle Maxwell has become my new favourite. Wow, just wow!

I adored this book, from the very first page I was consumed by all this Graham and Mackenzie.

This book had it all, the Lol moments between friends, the undying first love, the struggles of real life... everything!

I couldn’t put it down. So much so, I fell asleep with my kindle stuck to the side of my freaking face.

Well done Elle on your first novel, I can’t wait to read more of your stuff.

An amazing debut book! Second chance romances are another one of my fave tropes and I love the way Elle did this one. It still had angst but wasn’t a super slow burn like some second chance romances are. I love Graham and his alpha male ways (again one of my faves in a romance) and I also really enjoyed the little bit of suspense and crime drama that was intertwined into this Steamy AF romance. This was a major binge read for me that I stayed up way to late reading. My only complaint is that all though I appreciate the author trying to leave everything tied up with a bow perfect at the ending I found it a little drawn out. But she left you with no questions and completely satisfied so that is a huge plus!

I loved this story. It was so real and perfect and just the cutest story ever. You meet Graham and Mackenzie who were high school sweethearts when one day Graham was arrested for Murder. 5 years later Graham is released from prison and you see how much has changed between the two.

Mackenzie still is angry for the fact that Graham never once wrote her a letter or called her. When she finally sees him again 5 years later she is in shock.

They have their obstacles and overcome issues but they eventually end up together.

I cant wait for Marissa story.

Wasn't what I expected, but it turns out I enjoyed reading this second chance at love story very much. It's a quick and easy read that's a little bit angsty, sad, bittersweet and happy all rolled into one. A new to me author whose writing appealed to me with good pacing, enough romance to appease and just a dang good read. I enjoyed getting to know both the main characters. College campus setting that didn't include a sports-star or big man on campus -- just a gorgeous guy who lost his girl in a tragic sort of way trying to win her back. It worked for me.

3 Staying in the Light Stars

This was a solid debut in my opinion. The amazing cover and the synopsis got me interested in this story. And I think it had a lot of potential. It wasn't only a love story - I really liked the secondary characters and the criminal aspect of the plot.
"It’s the strangest thing, starting to date someone you’ve previously been in a relationship with.
It’s both new and familiar—there’s a sense that it’s the beginning of something but also that we’re already a dozen steps down the road."

The rating is in the middle because for me Graham was overly possessive over Mackenzie, also his stalker-ish tendencies didn't sit well with me. I get that the girl is the love of his life, and after not seeing her for five years Graham just wanted to be with her, and near her, but this method of sitting on her doorstep, and being in places she is was a bit cringy for me.

This one runs a bit on the insta side of things, and because these two had a lot of history together I didn't mind that so much.

Overall it was an interesting story with hreat characters, and I'll definitely check the next books from Elle Maxwell in the future.

First off how cute is this cover? Well don't be fooled by it's cuteness this is no fluffy story. It is tough and gritty and yes it has sweet moments don't get me wrong but what Graham and Mackenzie go through isn't all hearts and flowers. This is story about a guy named Graham who is trying to make up for mistakes he made in the past. He comes back to win back the love of his life. He will do whatever it takes to get that second chance. Mackenzie on the other hand doesn't know what to choose her head or her heart. Until she learns the truth. Love is about fighting for what you want and not giving up. If you love someone you will find a way to make it through all the tough times. I really enjoyed there story and thought the characters were well written. I like the back and forth of the character chapters. I like to know what each one is thinking. The side characters are perfect and I have to say I would love to read Marisa's story. You should definitely read this book!

Ah, the story of first loves. We've all experienced it. Mackenzie and Graham had this young love... the kind that stays with you even when time and circumstances pull you apart physically but never emotionally. Even when life moves forward, you always have that special part of your heart for that person. When these two find each other again, the chemistry is palpable and sparks fly! I really enjoyed reading this book and if you’re a big fan of second chance romances you will too.

Loved this book. "Happily Ever After" is not living "forever happy", but loving your life with the happiness and frustrations spread throughout. Elle Maxwell's debut novel is a story that tells an uncommon truth about loving someone after a tragic event ends a devoted relationship and the eventual emotional upheaval that follows after an unexpected reunion. Us, Again provides romance and a smidge of action. 5/5!

It was an honor to be an ARC reader and to provide my honest review.

This was more of a 3.5 star read for me. The first half was maybe 4.5 star read but the last 40 percent changed the whole feel of the book. This one took the “problem” that all romance books feature to a new level. And there was two major problems to choose from. I’m also not used to one of the main characters recently being let out of prison. These are just my initial thoughts. More later if I feel it needs more. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars.

***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***

Us, Again is Elle Maxwell debut novel and I was very excited to read it. I confess I expected a bit more angst from it, but in the end I was left satisfied.

This is a second-chance romance, between MacKenzie and Graham. They were highschool sweethearts who got separated by a cruel twist of fate and years later find the way back to each other. But not without some challenges on their way.

I received this ARC a couple weeks ago and I started it, but unfortunately wasn't feeling the story, at least not at first. I gave myself some time to start it all over again and I'm glad I did that, because I ended up getting a bit more into it. Specially on the second half of the book.

In the first half of the book, at least for me, it was clear this was a debut author, I felt like she hasn't yet found her pace and the writing wasn't quite there yet. Some things felt too forced and too stiff at times. But then it evolved and I got more into the story. It started to pull me more towards it, which shows a great evolution.

I felt it was a bit hard connecting with the characters, at first. They weren't very relatable. Not only the main characters, but also the side ones, like MacKenzie's best friend, who was supposed to be hilarious. For me the sense of humor on the book was sometimes good, a few times great, but most of the times too much. It felt too forced and ended up not being funny at all. Sometimes it was almost like everyone was trying too hard.

I'm not a huge fan of dual POVs and books in the first person and Us, Again has both. It didn't bother me a lot, but that didn't really help in me connecting with the characters. I had a hard time with that. Specially because some of their dialogues, or internal dialogues (specially Graham's) didn't feel organic to me.

This story had a lot of potential and even though it didn't quite get there, it still left a good impression in me.

This wasn't an effortlessly reading experience or a flawless book. And that is okay. Specially for a first book. I still enjoyed the story and the writing, specially in the second half. There weren't many loose ends and the story is tied well together. The epilogue is also good and gives a great continuation to what the story started with its ending.

I believe Elle Maxwell has a lot yet to explore and that in honing her abilities, she will become a great writer and I hope she keeps writing. I think that once she matures her writing and skills she'll bring a great book after another. I have a feeling about her and I cannot wait to see her developing herself as an author, because she left a good mark with Us, Again.

{Thank you @ellemaxwellauthor for the ARC #partner}⁣

Graham and Mackenzie are high school sweethearts and the couple you can't help but adore. Life seems perfect for this couple until Graham's parents are tragically killed in a car accident. Unable to handle his grief, Graham turns to alcohol and drugs and winds up in prison. Now, 5 years later, he has served his time and is ready to make amends for his mistakes. Mackenzie was torn apart when Graham left and won't allow herself anywhere near that kind of vulnerability again. Just as it seems happily ever after might be in store for these two after all, a ghost from Graham's past threaten to take down everything they've worked for. ⁣

Let's start off with my affection for Graham. He tall, muscular, tattooed, doesn't take any crap, and is madly, head over heels, adoringly in love with Mackenzie. I love a hot guy who's in love with his girl!! Mackenzie and Graham's story is a second chance romance but I got major enemies-to-lovers vibes during the first part of the book since Mackenzie has serious animosity for the guy who left her heart so torn apart 5 years ago. Her struggle between giving into her heart and keeping her "safe" walls up was written so well and I found her very relatable. ⁣

Graham and Mackenzie's chemistry is steamy and off the charts and I loved it. A lot of their story focuses on communication which I am so here for!! Good communication in relationships cannot get enough attention because it's so important and I really respect books that portray that. Both Graham and Mackenzie have excellent friend support systems and the characters of Marisa, Griff, and Shaina really rounded out a wonderful cast for this story. I am very impressed that this is Elle Maxwell's debut novel and I am definitely on board for her future work!

My mama used to say that those books that you stumble upon out of sheer coincidence are the ones that will bring you the most pleasure. Excuse the pun. If you know, then you know.

Jokes aside I don’t think my heart can take another cute cover like this one. I saw @bringmybooks showing off her ARC and I couldn’t help myself and asked Elle for one too. Linds and I tagged team and buddy read this one together and I know she shares my thoughts and sentiments too.

Elle Maxell has written the perfect love story. There is no contesting that ‘second chance in love’ is my favourite trope and this one undoubtedly hit the spot. Again, excuse the pun.

This book was an absolute delight to read. I loved the characters, the story, the humour and the romance. This book is exactly what you need in order to rekindle your interest in the romance genre. It has just the right amount of steam and fun.

I fell for this book really hard, really fast, however. (sorry, not sorry)

I expected a light, hopefully somewhat amusing read but what I got instead was quite a deep story that I absolutely loved reading from beginning to end.

I felt so much empathy for Graham, who struggles to redeem himself after his incarceration and win back the love of his life. The author also wrote incredibly touching examples of how people process grief in different ways and how a single wrong decision can change the course of your entire life.

This is a perfect book to cosy up with the in the evenings. I really enjoyed this book and I hope you enjoy it just as much as I did.

Former high school sweethearts, Graham and Mackenzie were as happy as can be, until Graham was arrested and sent to prison for murder. Five years later, he was released and determined to win his girl back, except it got a little complicated when his past forced its way to their present.

An enchanting second chance romance laced with steam, personal growth, and mental health awareness that is honestly hard to put down. What an amazing debut novel! Maxwell engineered a well-crafted, easy-flowing storyline with a ton of excellent dialogue, metaphorical sentences, clever one-liners and puns that were downright genius (in a modern, contemporary, relatable kind of way) — “After what just transpired, I seriously need to seek comfort at the bottom of their guacamole.” I. Loved. It.

Graham lived up to the hype of a swoony alpha male lead, and Mackenzie was a strong, young woman you can’t help but stand by. (The only thing I couldn’t quite wrap my brain around was how emotionally mature they both were for being 23!) And, all supporting characters were well-developed. With the more serious themes of drug abuse and therapy that come to light, this was definitely more than just a romance. Can I just say I got a hint of a Fast & Furious vibe from this book (sans fast cars)?

This is an amazing read that had me up in the wee hours of the night reading. I definitely recommend to my fellow contemporary romance readers.

Thank you Elle Maxwell for sending me this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me. Objectively I think this book was good, but a few too many things went against my personal taste. I think others will love it.

After spending five years in prison, Graham is determined to rectify his mistakes and win back the woman of his dreams, Mackenzie. I love a second chance romance, and initially I was invested in this one. Refusing to repeat a broken heart, Mackenzie was resistant to Graham’s promises and there’s nothing I love more than that. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long enough for me. All was forgiven too soon and I would have preferred the grovelling to stretch a little more.

Graham was a true alpha hero, and definitely had a heart of gold, but he ventured too far into the possessive tone for my liking. And there’s a lot of sex. A lot. Don’t get me wrong, I love a steamy scene, but it overshadowed the plot for me in this one. As someone from Graham’s past shows up for revenge, there’s a really great underlying story full of suspense and danger, but it seemed Mackenzie and Graham only had sex on their minds.

On a positive note, it had a wonderful message regarding mental illness, therapy, and the overall stigma surrounding it. And the writing was beautiful. I was highlighting various passages in my Kindle constantly. I will definitely check out any future books Elle Maxwell writes.

Wow!!!! I have to say this book kept me glued to it. Honestly, it was an interesting storyline with it being about Graham Wyatt going to prison and leaving the love of his life Mackenzie Thatcher. Five years later he gets out of prison and inserts himself back into her life. Pretty much from the get go it is intense and especially steamy. The chemistry between the two sizzled off the pages. And boy was there a lot of hot steamy scenes throughout. I found the friendships incredible and definitely some laugh out loud moments between Mackenzie and Marisa. Graham was definitely a loveable, goofy oddball of a guy who I saw struggle and come out the other side better. It was a great touch on bringing up the view on mental health and the struggles of eventually getting the help they need and showing it through Graham’s character. Mental health issues are dominating the media today and yet it’s not addressed enough. So I applaud Elle Maxwell for giving us a character who someone can relate to and see that getting the help they need is so important.

I honestly enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more from Elle Maxwell.

⁣“I don’t want to hero – I want a partner. I want you. Every day I make the choice to be with you, complete with all of our past baggage. I need you to do the same thing, because then we can carry it together.”⠀

US, AGAIN is a heartening, sexy, second chance romance that revamps the second chance trope with an element of suspense—Mackenzie and Graham have their emotional work cut out to make their way back to each other, yes, but the biggest hurdles to their relationship’s future are the ghosts of Graham’s past.⠀

Mackenzie and Graham work on communication, they love each other for who they are, they have fantastic chemistry and a supportive network of good friends. The writing flows, the dialogue is mature and relatable. The steam is deeeelightfully steamy. In short, this is a fantastic debut romance, and you need this on your shelf and your kindle!

Thank you, Elle, for a complimentary copy to read and review. You’re a fantastic writer, and I’m honored to be a part of the indie romance author community with you!
