Review originally published in SCREAM Magazine issue #60 May/June 2020

Character-driven horror is my thing. I’m an emotional reader hoping to fall in love with the people in the story so that I can have my heart crushed when bad things may or may not happen to them. It’s all about that up-front investment. The Other Inside engages the reader right away. I found myself investing in the protagonist/narrator Billie early on; which raised the stakes and built up that lovely suspense and tension.
Billie is a troubled young man. His childhood home was wrought with violence, ultimately ending in the murder of his mother. Poor Billie is the unfortunate one to find his mother’s mutilated body on the floor in their home.
Ultimately, Billie runs away in order to leave behind painful memories and also this animalistic persona he finds himself transitioning into more and more as he grows older.
As the story progresses, Billie meets up with an old friend named, Claire and a lingering flame begins to burn. Claire sees that Billie is still haunted by his past and hopes to help him sort through all of his conflicting emotions.
There’s a real danger of me spoiling too much of the reader discovery in such a cleverly devised plotline so I’m holding back some of the more entertaining aspects of this story. I just want to make sure to recommend this novel to fans of character-driven (werewolf!) horror fiction. I had a good time with this one; pleasantly surprised that I had such an emotional experience with this one.

4.5
Writing up my review for SCREAM Magazine! I'm so excited because I previously was able to share J. M. White's debut novel, SHATTERED with SCREAM fans. The teaser: "this author is one to watch". Now I get to prove that White's storytelling is on that upward trajectory.
Readers who love character-driven (werewolf!) horror novels should get on this one.

The Other Inside is an excellent serial killer novel that is all kinds of evil fun. It gives you an intimate look inside the head of a monster and it’s hard to look away once you get a peek!

Billie is a bit of a reclusive dude but he seems nice enough. Unfortunately for Billie (and some of the people he encounters), he lives with the “other inside”. The “other” has an insatiable desire to kill people and drink their blood. Oops, we can’t all be perfect, eh?

The story follows Billie around as he bumps into an old friend from his childhood and they reconnect. This new turn in his life has unexpected results and threatens to unlock some past hurts. We get flashbacks back into the past of Billie’s trauma-filled childhood and though it’s often painful to read, as I said somewhere up there, it’s impossibly hard to take your eyes away because the writing is so compelling. Billie actually manages to come across as sympathetic despite . . . well, despite everything. He’s just a man awkwardly maneuvering his way through life while dealing with a lot of horrible and impossible things. You don’t want to feel bad for him once you witness some of the “things” but you also can’t help yourself.

Or maybe it’s just me . . .

It also has a nifty little mystery that comes as a bonus side dish to all of the bloodlust. It’s dark and very well done and I think thriller and horror fans alike will both find something to like here. Sometimes books fail me in the end but this one absolutely did not and that’s all I’ll say about that! But in the end, it was the characters who worked the most for me. Billie and Clarice and everyone else here are fleshed out very well Their motives, their quirks, their interactions - it’s all great stuff. It’ll hook you but good and I recommend it if you’re a fan of the darker stuff.

Also the gifs are back after a brief stint of me attempting to be professional but they are back now because I like them 😳

"What would they say if they knew what lived inside me?"

The Other Inside is the second book I've read by JM White. Her first book, Shattered, was sort of a combination of domestic thiller and horror, and I would say that The Other Inside is a straight up horror novel.

I really enjoyed this book! The synopsis caught my attention, and the book totally delivered. Once the story got going, I was totally hooked & couldn't put it down. The story is grim and interesting, and it held my attention throughout the entire book.

If you like serial killer / slasher horror, I highly recommend picking up The Other Inside when it comes out on 1/9. You don't want to miss out on this one!

At a teensy bit over 200 pages, this story packs quite a little punch. I liked the suck you right in opening and immediately was curious about Billie. His mother is dead, he left his brother and now he's dealing with the Other...and it's winning.

For a shorter book, it did lull for me in a couple of areas and I didn't feel it was as seamless as it could have been. Certain parts felt they were setting up for certain things and then sometimes those things just seemed thrown at you rather than just revealing itself in a more natural manner, while a couple of things didn't sit quite right. Having said that, once I was involved with this, I was IN IT.

What I loved best was wondering about Billie himself. Is he a bit deranged? Is it really not what it seems to be or is it REALLY WHAT IT SEEMS TO BE? I was happy it went in the direction that it did and I'm so very curious as to what happens after that ending. In any manner, this is a nice bit of horror to read and I would definitely recommend for horror lovers.

The Other Inside is equal parts horror and equal parts rapid-fire psychological thriller. The sum of which is a riveting read that kept me engaged from beginning to end.
The main character, Billie, was three dimensional and well thought out. His internal conflict with his Other Inside left me equally conflicted as to whether I was cheering for him or rooting against him throughout the book, which I think is the mark of any well-written, morally ambiguous character.
What also made me enjoy this book was the originality of the story. White manages to mix and fuse genres, supernatural elements, and real-world issues in a way that causes The Other Inside to truly stand out among many of the other Indie books I’ve recently read.

The story wasn't without flaws, however. There were a variety of twists, turns and revelations that were meant to rev up the excitement of the book right up until the end. Unfortunately, the addition of so many twists caused the book to lose some of its lustre. At just over 200 pages, it felt as though there may have been too many twists forced into the story, some of which caused characters to be written in ways that weren’t quite believable in order to service the shock and awe aspects of the plot.
The Other Inside demonstrates that J.M. White is a great writer with fantastic ideas. I only wish the book had been longer so those ideas could have been fully fleshed out. That being said, I truly did appreciate the originality and audacity of this story.

If you are in the mood for a unique, fast-paced, action-packed thriller (that may leave you with severe trust issues), then I definitely recommend The Other Inside.

The other inside tells the story of Billie, a boy with a dark and violent background who attempts to escape from the memory of his mother’s murder. While also attempting to live with the thing inside him, the thing that’s hungry, the other. With the question still remaining of who killed his mother and the constant hungry the other feels, Billie finds himself trying to survive not only from his memories but from the other that lives inside.

❝ In a way, blood and happiness had become entangled. He could not seem to experience one without the other.

The book opens up with an disturbing scene, giving us a taste of the horrors that await later on. I was hooked from page one, Billie’s constant internal struggle combined with the numerous murders kept the story moving FAST.

The suspense just kept building up, it almost felt like trying to find the end of the rainbow, I couldn’t stop until I reached the end. It felt like one of those scenarios when the main character is falling in a downward spiral and all you can do is keep reading even though you want to get inside the book and DO SOMETHING, it was just a roller coaster of emotions, plot twists and murder. I couldn’t ask for anything else.

One thing that I’ve noticed with White’s novels is that no matter what, they always get you on the edge of your seat and they are not only action packed but also fast paced, there is never a dull moment.

I received a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Edge-of-your-seat, fantastic!

Billy and Fred share the same mom, but that’s about it. At least Fred’s dad stuck around for a few years, unlike Billy’s who was basically a hit and run, a one-night-stand. “He was gone before I even realized.”, his mother had said.

Billy has always known he was different. His stepfather never wasted a moment telling him what a no-good waste he was. That was in between the beatings he gave his mother. Why did she put up with him?

Billy couldn’t wait to graduate high school and get away from him, away from the town that has only brought him grief; he was a nobody here. A nobody to everyone but Clarice, his best friend and neighbor. The only person who ever understood and accepted him. But now that they are older, she’s pulling away from him, too.

Now there is only one constant in his life and it’s the Other. The nameless one that lurks and appears unexpectedly; an evil Billy has been unable to escape from. Will it ever go away? Will Billy ever find peace?

A creepy story with good tension. The sudden addition of another POV half way through was a little jarring but made the climax that much more effective.

I quite enjoyed this story. It was full of twists and turns like any thriller should be. I really liked the character of Billie, and how he went through his life, despite some serious set backs. He went through some serious abuse as a child, and has never recovered from it.

There were a couple downsides to this story. Characters not being fully fleshed out and predictability being the main two. Despite those things I did enjoy this book.

White has done one bang-up job in this tale. The novel is cleverly crafted between different points of view. The first-person point of view is used for all of the scenes that are happening in the here and now. When the author dives into the past, the writing narrative switches to the third person past tense. In addition, the story is told to us from both of the main characters; Billie and Clare.

Billie and Clare are best friends and neighbors in small-town America, where every house is hiding some secret. This book has several. We get to watch as these two grow up together, experience the trials of childhood, snippets of the teenage years and finally into young adulthood. Clare seems to have traveled well on her journey and yet we get clues, sometimes very subtle, other times told quite loudly, that all is not as it might seem.

Billie, on the other hand, has had one hell of a journey. Growing up in an abusive and toxic environment, thanks to an alcoholic stepfather, we see the end results of Billie’s formative years spent in fear. But, is the abuse his step-father delivers to every member of the family the reason why Billie is the way he is?

Billie likes blood. In fact, he needs it. Which gives this tale an incredibly different take on Vampires. “The Other” is Billie’s way of describing the cravings that overtake him, the indescribable need for blood. White holds our hand at the beginning of this tale and shows us (plausibly) how step-daddy’s anger and lashing out slowly turns Billie into someone who finds satisfaction in the coppery taste of life-giving blood. From the journey’s first steps of self-harm to animal hunting, to human murder.

The pivot point in this novel is the death of Billie’s mother. As the reader, we are left guessing, sort of, how the murder happened. Again, White leads us down a path of suspicion that would have you believe that Frank (the stepfather) is the murderer. But then maybe was it Billie?

Believe me, the truth of it all, I didn’t see coming. And that’s kind of how I found the whole book. I just didn’t see it coming. You suspect that something’s up – like when you pay money at the movie theater for a horror movie – you know what you’ve signed up for, yet you still end up jumping in your seat at the scary moments.

This is what White’s done. Clever. Very, very clever. “Look here, let’s walk down this path. Isn’t it dark and scary? See the shadows and the gnarled old roots of the giant trees?” And then something completely wild and unsuspected jumps out and leaves you breathless.

That’s The Other Inside.

At the end of the book, the author has her bio listed and some interesting information. The ‘vampirism’ in this tale is modeled after a real-life condition (not truly recognized yet) as Renfield Syndrome. I encourage you to read the extra page. It will send shivers down your spine.

Real. Vampires. Exist.

Now, go read this book.

I straight up just love J.M. White. Her style of writing is so much fun to read, and The Other Inside is no different. I loved this book!

This book kept me interested the entire time. It is a fairly short book, with 196 pages, but does not lack a great story. I really like her character's development throughout this story, and I particularly love the main character, Billie. Throughout the book you are wondering, is Billie sick? He is truly a monster? What IS the Other inside? Is he merely off his rocker? DID he kill his mother? Billie's character somewhat reminds me of Dexter's "Dark Passenger", bravo to J.M. White for recreating that in her way.

I would consider this a horror/thriller novel. There are many different aspects in this novel, and they all fit beautifully!

And the twist...oh I loved it!

I highly recommend you give this a read. What's better than a horror novel, written in such a way that it's a fun read, AND hooks you instantly? 🙌

The Other Inside is a gripping, psychologically intense thriller that keeps readers on edge. J.M. White delves deep into trauma, secrets, and the dark side of human nature, creating a story that is both suspenseful and emotionally charged. Billie’s struggle with the “Other” is hauntingly portrayed, and the unfolding mystery keeps the pages turning. A compelling, dark ride that lingers after the final chapter.

A fresh take on a vampire story. This story is about Billie, who tries to lead a normal life, though he feels this Other inside him that prevents that from happening. Short story, very fast paced and kept me flipping the pages. Wish there would have been more to the book and the ending makes me want more!

A bit of a let down

Well it's not what you want to think. I'm not sure it's even what I think.
The story is a mishmash of legend, myth, folklore and incredible invention but I'm still not sure what I just read.
That being said I think people should just read it and form their own opinions.
I suppose I recommend it.

Surprisingly Good

For a short novel from a new book, this was actually very good. Although there were a few spelling errors, the thrill of this book was actually good. While it was a a mystery of who killed mommy dearest, it actually turned into a slight story about vampires.

WOW! Just WOW!
I seriously loved this book. It was such a quick read. It has such an amazing twist that I didn't see coming, and it had some Dexter "dark passenger" type vibes, so you KNOW I was totally into it before I even finished the first page!

So, as the story goes, Billie comes from a rough home. He finds his mother dead one day after returning from school, and his abusive step father is charged with the crime. Unable to bear the bullying he has endured, and the memories of what happened to his mother, he runs- far away. The problem is, he cannot outrun The Other- the thing inside him that rears its ugly head once the hunger becomes too much and it needs to feed. It's Billie's own personal "dark passenger."

Gruesome murders are uncovered one by one in the quiet New Hampshire town, and the cops are on the trail of the killer. When Billie reconnects with his childhood best friend, secrets emerge from the shadows the leave you wondering about what really happened that day when Billie found his mother in the kitchen in a pool of blood.

And then, there's the twist. OMGGGG- that twist! I did not see it coming, and you won't either. The ending was everything you want in a great thriller. You're sitting on the edge of your seat, flipping the pages, biting your lip, wondering "What? Is it...? Huh? Are they going to...? Is he going to....?" I won't give it away though.

I loved that the story just grabs you and doesn't let you go until the end (and what an end it is), and even after the ending, it's still hanging on. It is an easy read- not too many unnecessary descriptions or too much flowery language- but just the perfect thriller read with the right amount of suspense, mystery, and compelling likable characters. You are totally going to want to grab this in January!!!

This book was a page turner for me, could not put it down. I loved everything in the book, the changing of back in the past to the present as well the two main POV, Billie and Clare! Each chapter left a cliffhanger that left me wanting more....I kept going, reading more dark secrets unwrapped and the development of how this Other became. There were happy moments or scenes nor a happy ending which I would not have expected. The way he struggled internally with the Other shows how much he (Billie) has morals and emphatic about his actions, the Other though needs to feed, for survival; even if it means murdering to live. Its a conflicting life to live and to carry the heavy burden everywhere you go. The horror and gore was so descriptive, it left shivers up my spine. I do have to say I wanted to know one important thing that wasn't mentioned in the book, if you've read this, you know what I'm talking about. I'm left with a book hangover when I finished this. If this were a book series I'd definitely would keep reading this! 5/5 ⭐

J. M. White does not disappoint in this psychological thriller/horror. I am not a horror buff; however, this book had me wanting more and more. What was to happen next? Who DID actually kill his mom? How much longer can he satisfy his need without being found out? Will he be found out at all? So many questions. The author captured my attention from the beginning and, in true J. M. White style, used vivid descriptive text to engage the reader and let the reader fully envision every detail of the story as it unfolded. As we learned more and more about Billie, our perception, or at least my perception, waivered a bit. Am I rooting for Billie? Or am I against him? Well written and another must read!
