"May this powerful story . . . plant fresh seeds of hope and service for generations to come." - Senator Edward M. Kennedy

Rose's Garden is a sweet fable dedicated to Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy -- celebrating the spirit of community, the beauty of nature, and the power of faith and imagination.

After traveling the world in her fantastic teapot, Rose is ready to put down roots. She sets about planting flower seeds in a neglected corner of a bustling city. And then she waits -- through rain, and cold, and snow. Rose waits, never doubting that the garden she envisions will one day come to be. With a simple narration and lovely, fanciful illustrations, this luminous picture book resonates with readers of all ages. Author-illustrator Peter H. Reynolds dedicates it to the matriarch of the Kennedy family -- herself the namesake of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, a series of gardens, plazas, and tree-lined promenades.

I found out there was a book by Peter H. Reynolds I hadn’t enjoyed before! It was exciting to find it on my school library shelf. It promptly came home with me and I’ve enjoyed reading it thoroughly. Wonderful picture book about a girl named Rose who patiently waits for her garden to grown and doesn’t give up. Good for a discussion on persistence and determination. I additionally loved the community action which could lead to another quality discussion.

Rose is an adventurer who decides to settle and grow a garden. This is a story of tenacity, immigration, community and hope. The illustrations are sepia tone until Rose's garden begins to "bloom." Reynolds adds more color to each subsequent page. While not for storytime, a good book to share with preschool, kindergarten children.

I picked this book, because I love gardening. Rose travel's the world in her large tea pot, and gathers seeds from the flowers she see's. The tea pot is filled to the top, and Rose stops at a city, and goes to see where she can plant her seeds. She finds a spot that has been neglected, and goes back to get her seeds. She finds the birds have eaten most of the seeds. She still believes in her idea of a garden, and has many obstacles to face. In the end there is a beautiful positive result for her beliefs.

This book was found on the Tumbleweed books from the Rockford Public Library.

This is a sweet tribute to the matriarch of a political dynasty and a cultural icon. The tale is fantastic and imaginative and the sepia toned illustrations gently become more and more vibrantly colored. We loved that two of the characters on the last page remind us of the characters from the story "Tess's Tree", which was illustrated by the same author. Our oldest noticed it first!

With exquisite illustrations and a simple, but powerful message, "Rose's Garden" really made my day. I am definitely going to recommend this book to library patrons!

Synopsis - Rose (named after Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy) sails the world in her teapot, collecting seeds from everywhere she visits. She eventually lands on an island and decides to plant her seeds. Unfortunately, birds have eaten most of them, and her dream of planting a large garden with them appears lost. She can only plant a few seeds in her garden and they seem to take forever to grow - maybe they won't grow at all? Things seem to turn around for Rose when children from all around the city bring paper flowers to her - paper flowers that she "plants" in the ground around the seeds to make it look more like a garden. When the real flowers finally do begin to bloom, everyone gathers to enjoy Rose's garden with her.

Evaluation - There are too many artificial plot points in this story, making it hard for younger children to really understand how the events connect into larger themes of the story - including the importance of your dreams and the empowerment of community in helping you realize those dreams. As a result of all these artificial points, the themes are just too forced. While all of this might be fine for politically enlightened parents reading the book to their young ones, it is not likely to "stick" with the young ones themselves. There is nothing identifiable in Rose, and the feeling the other children have for her - one of pity, I guess? - is not a very enduring one. And why do the birds eat all the seeds in the teacup, what's the point of that?

There is just too much "theater" going on here for this to be a story for children. It's fine if parents or teachers think they can teach some bigger lesson or maybe provide children a chance to learn about Rose F. Kennedy's life, but I very much doubt that this will be a book primarily enjoyed by children.

Rose is on a magnificent adventure, traveling around the world in her teapot. She collects seeds from every place that she visits along her journey. Rose comes upon a city with a forgotten dusty piece of earth, that is just the place for Rose to plant her seeds that fill her teapot. She prepares the soil and plants a few seeds that are left from birds feasting upon them. She waits and she waits, but nothing begins to grow, Rose never loses her faith and believes that the seeds will grow one day. Word got around the city of Rose’s faith and boys and girls from the town began to make her paper flowers to plant in the soil while she awaited the real ones. I loved the heartwarming messages of community and faith. The illustrations are just as wonderful as the story itself. Rose’s adventure begins in monochromatic tones of neutral colors, but when her garden grows, the whole story comes to life with beautiful hues. This story gives children of all ages a powerful message in faith and compassion of others in our communities.

Rose travels in a teapot full of seeds to a city where the streets are bare of life/color. In a moment of negligence, birds swoop in on Rose's seeds and eat most of them.
Rose, disappointed but hopeful, plants the remaining seeds and waits season after season for them to sprout. In the meantime, children from the town bring her colorful paper flowers to decorate the area while she waits. Finally, once the area is covered in a garden of the children's paper flowers, Rose notices bees flying around - the 'real' flowers have sneakily bloomed among the paper ones.

The book claims that the paper and real flowers bloomed 'all because of Rose's believing in it.'

I thought everything was really cute and LOVED the idea of a teapot boat until that line and then everything felt super hokey and fell apart for me. :|

It had been a few years since I read a book by Peter H. Reynolds, when his book Ish came to mind. I tracked down some of his newer books and was really impressed with both the stories and the illustrations. This is the story off a young girl named Rose; she is sailing around the world in her teapot ship and she collects seeds where ever she goes to remember the places she has been. Soon she arrives in a new town and decides to settle there. She finds an abandoned plot of land and decides to plant her garden. But when she returns to her boat, almost all her seeds have been eaten by birds. She takes the few that are left and plants them, and waits and waits. She hopes and believes that the garden will grown and bring color to the city. But the plants just do not seem to be blooming. Then one day a child brings her a paper flower for her garden - soon all the children are bringing her flowers and her garden becomes full of beautiful flowers. Then she realizes that there are real flowers growing among the paper ones. Her faith has been rewarded. Reynolds has a very distinctive style of illustration, often minimalist, in that there are drawings in the center of each page without having to cover every page from edge to edge. The artwork is adorable and the story is wonderful.

Gah, I love Peter Reynolds' stories so much! This is another best-of-the-best kind of children's book. I especially loved that the illustrations stayed black-and-white until the flowers started blooming. Would highly recommend.

I like how even though the character couldn’t plant the seeds from all over the world in her new home. People brought heir own flowers from all over the world to share in making this new place a place for all of them.
