Blood Accord #0.5

V is for Vampire

Rate this book
“Bite down and don't let go.”
November Kitamura just wants to serve her time as a gate guard and maybe once in a while splurge on that nice imported bloodmeal for a change. You know. Vampire stuff.

Then these conspiracy whackos show up at her post and try to get all murdery.

She wakes up beaten and bloody in a cheap apartment on the surface, where vampires haven’t lived in at least three hundred years. Her new guard partner Leo might have been trying to save her life—and he might look delicious as hell—but he’s also out of his mortal mind to bring her here. His arrogant roommate, Radoslav, is no better.

She needs to get back underground. This isn’t some fairytale land like back in the twenty-first century. It’s a felony for her to even be up top, and these two men can’t agree on how to smuggle her home.

Plus, there’s this whole other problem.

November is getting hungry.

V is for Vampire is a raw, red-hot prologue to the upcoming Blood Accord series, and smears the pages with a thirsty vampire who knows what she wants, and the men who know how to give it to her. Stain remover recommended.

Eris writes dark, escape-from-reality romance full of criminals and outcasts. Her stories are the stomping grounds for bada** heroines, untameable alphas, a spectrum of sexuality, and a serious disregard for convention. Expect the decadent and filthy, the crude and sublime, sometimes all at once. Pick a safeword and grab a towel before reading. She is a complete nerd and possible crazy cat lady. She will annoy you with puns.

Eris posts updates with information about her latest works in progress and more on her facebook page and on her website.

4.5 STARS!!
The vampire's smile curled at her in some dark victory, his pleasure obvious in seeing her limits tested this way.
Eris Adderly does it again . . . dark, dirty, and twisted - all my favorite adjectives to apply to books!

I loved the world building. I loved the scorching hot sex.

My only problem is that I seem to have started a series that's incomplete. 😱 That's okay, when future installments become available, it'll be no hardship to do a quick re-read.

I LOVED it! This was a much needed, much desired, twist on the typical vampire man/human woman romance trope. In this one, the woman is the vampire and the man is the human. I can't describe how much I loved this dynamic. Maybe I'm tired of reading about aggressive, controlling, alpha men with a skewed power dynamic. This story was something I have been wanting to read so desperately, something different. LOVED IT, 100% recommend it! Also, really hot smut in this one. I can't wait for the 1st book of the series.

Often, you start a book knowing that the particular trope isn’t something you’d normally read, but it’s from an author whose other work you highly respect and admire, so you figure you’ll give this one a shot too. And then you start reading. And you continue. And continue. And suddenly you’re at the end, saying “God, what another great book by this author!” And only then do you remember that it’s *supposed* to be about a genre you normally don’t read.

That is V Is For Vampire.

This novel does contain ‘vampires’ in the strictest sense of the word. In addition, many of the conceits of that trope do appears laced throughout this story. However, it is soooooo rich in characterizations that far exceed the constraints of the trope that by the end of chapter one you’ve completely forgotten that this si supposed to be a vampire novel. No, this story is about people. Real people struggling with a workplace incident (of all things!), and in the course of doing so find attraction, desire, empathy, and respect for each other. This novel may include the things that you might expect from a vampire novel, but it takes them and bends them into something so uniquely beautiful that it subsumes those symbols into something that is much greater than the sum of those small parts.

Eris brings tension into the incredible world she has built with the introduction of a callback to more standard vampire fare, but it is done in such a way as you don’t really think of it in the same fashion as you would with a more traditional vampire novel. Without going into a lot of detail that will become spoilery, suffice to say it just works, and works beautifully.

If you are someone who loves a good vampire-esque book, read this. If you are someone who doesn’t; read this. If you are someone who loves a beautifully written, grab-you-by-the-seat-of-your-pants story that drags you into it and doesn’t let go; read this. If you love to read, read this.

You will not be sorry.

4 creative stars.

It’s always hard to review novellas you know? The author needs to fit a lot of things into a relative short amount of pages, and in my experience, you usually end up with a very surface level piece, with barely any substance, or something like this, where the 150-page count isn’t enough to hold everything the author tried to shove in.
I hope I don’t come off as mean, but V is for Vampire had a lot of potential that wasn’t quite realized, so I’ll judge it to higher standards than the average novella may deserve.

The world-building:

Was great. It’s a dystopia, a bit like if Enclave by Ann Aguirre and Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha had a baby, with some vampires thrown in.
The amount of detail Adderly was able to infuse into the story was really good. She created an interesting and intriguing mythos with a bunch of mysterious players and unanswered questions that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
It was fresh and new and I would really love to learn more about it.

The Plot:

By far my biggest complaint about this novella, is that it shouldn’t have been a novella at all. There was a lot of untapped raw material here that easily could and should’ve been a first novel in a new series. The plot was great, but suffered greatly by being underdeveloped and rushed when it needn’t have been.
Adderly had plenty of story to go around and pace more organically, instead of cramming it all in in so few pages. A lot of people tend to skip prequels and dive straight into the main series, and I feel like it would be a shame in this case to let our introduction into this story and its main characters be so shallow.

The characters:

Were good on paper, but again, there is barely any time dedicated to truly fleshing out their personalities, motivations and relationships to one another; so they all fell a bit flat for me.
I won’t put up a specific romance category in this review, cause there really wasn’t much of one at all, just a bunch of sex, but the story could’ve been a lot richer if Adderly had more time to develop the budding relationship between our trio. They barely know each other, but all three are more than eager to jump into bed together for no discernible reason.
I get the author wanted a sexy story, but the lengthy sex scenes take up a lot of page count that was truly needed for more important things. Yes, they were super hot, but because of the lack of emotional connection between the characters, I can’t say I was overly interested in them. I hope if she ever turns this into an actual series, she works on that, because it was one of the weakest points within the narrative. I don’t know if it will continue on as a ménage, (hope so!) but it needs some serious work.
The amount of trust these people give each other is pretty much unearned, and Leo and Rado barely share any screen time, which would’ve helped a lot, considering they known each other a bit longer.

The prose:

Now, I know Adderly is an indy author, so I don’t wanna be awful, but the prose wasn’t the best. It felt stilted and awkward, and a lot of sentences were constructed really weirdly, to the point I was having trouble understanding what the heck was going on.
A few rookie mistakes were made, such as grammatical errors and bad phrases, like saying “he said” or “the vampire did that” a bit too often. She has potential, and this is nothing a good editor can’t fix, but be aware of it if you’re planning on purchasing it.

Overall, this is not a bad read, and I would recommend it, just don’t expect a perfect masterpiece. I would be open to reading more of Adderly’s work.

Very pulling story.
When I first started reading I was a bit lost with the terminology being used.
I wish there was a glossary in the beginning of the book so that I knew what some of the vocabulary was referring to or the meaning of. As I kept reading I figured it out, what would have saved time with the glossary.
When I first met January I wasn’t sure if I liked her. She was standoffish and seemed witchy.
But the further I read she started to grew on me. And by the end I admired her a lot.
Leo to me was a sweetheart from the start. He is January’s new work partner and I was thinking good luck with that Leo because she’s a cold one. For how nice he was I thought she’d chew him up and spit him out. But he surprised me and had more backbone and gumption than I gave him credit for.
There is plenty of drama, action and sizzle going on when they are forced to hid together.
Then Rado is introduced and that sizzle sky rocketed through the freaking roof!
I found Rado intriguing and mysterious. And exciting to get to know more about him.
This trio is suddenly thrown together in circumstances and situations beyond their control.
V is for Vampire is captivating and a definite page turner.
It is a unique and original take on the world of vampires.
Filled with mystery, lust and passion.
Absolutely looking forward to the next book.

Take what you think a vampire story should be, and toss it. This is nothing like you're expecting and everything you never knew you needed. My only issue is I'm impatient to get my hands on more.
There's no slow build up, and you are thrown into the action, danger, and suspense from the start. The story is rich in character and world building and the fast pace will make you forget the world around you. There's also plenty of steamy scenes in this short prequel. Read it if you love vampire stories. Read it if you don't think you like vampires but you love twisty, dark tales. Read it if you love detailed world building and rich characters. Just read it!

This is such a fresh take on the tired vampire mythos. I absolutely loved the world building (much more Daybreakers than Twilight!) and characters. November is a kick-ass lady vampire, but she has a ton of heart. Leo is the emotional core of the trio and I loved to see how he brings them together. Rado is still a bit of an enigma and I can't wait to see how his character develops. Bring on Six of One!

Unique Vampire Story

Eris Adderly is an original author with a twisted and demented take on all she sees and writes about. You have absolutely no inkling of the story she will share, in any of her books.

If you are looking for a creative and unexpected vampire scenario, this is your series AND this is your author!

I vastly enjoyed this one by Ms. Adderley.
Chills, sizzle, tension, creeps, suspense. And all perfectly balanced to keep this reader enthralled from beginning to end. Excellent writing & pacing that segued smoothly from action & deadly danger to scorching lust & sizzle that makes your toes curl. Shivers of the best kind as well as the frightening kind.
Ms. Adderley ramps up both the heat & tension in this excellently written prequel that keeps the reader on DELICIOUS tenterhooks. An intriguing plot with deadly tendrils, mesmerizing characters, sizzle, multi-layered personalities that surround us & paint vivid & exciting pictures in our mind.
Excellent & I can NOT wait for the next one in the series!

Trying out a new (to me) author- Eris Adderly. Started with Bass-Ackward and to say they are anything alike? Absolutely not.

Which is fine, refreshing actually, and I haven't read any Vampire stories for a bit so I liked it. Liked it a lot (4.5) and am looking forward to the novel since this is the prequel.

November is the name of our heroine, a Vampire, and she is saved by Leo from certain death. This unfolds a whole new chapter in her life with all kinds of secrets being revealed.
Good Stuff!

I've been reading feel-good fantasy, social commentary dystopia, and all around good-for-me-and-my-soul stuff. But I needed a break, I needed to get back to some twisted romantic adventure, and Eris Adderly is an author I've grown to love with her "Skull & Crossbone" romances. So why not a futuristic vampire story?

Adderly surpasses my expectations with this one. I am super-excited for her next book in the series...to be published, hopefully soon...

This is different to other vampire book but enjoyable all the same November and Leo are gate guards one on each side of the gate. They aren’t allowed to meet as only Leo is allowed on the surface. That is until November is attacked and Leo goes through the gate to help. He then takes her to his flat and that’s when the story gets enjoyable. I received an ARC for an honest review which I have given

What if vampirism was a genetic marker/scientific classification that governed your place in society?

I appreciated the mesh of sci-fi with the paranormal with a dash of change in vampirism lore.

Leo's excuse for taking November to the surface was too flimsy, I was actually expecting for it to be that Rado orchestrated/influenced it.

November didn't feel 50 years old. She just felt slightly older than Leo.

The smut was 5 stars.

I love how different the vampires are in this one. The story is super interesting and the vampires are so different from how they normally are portrayed. It makes for a great read! And it is also a very steamy read as well! If you like menage, and vampires, but with a twist you need to try this one!

Adderly knows the language of heat.

Whew. This may be a novella and a prequel, but it packs a punch all on its own. Adderly is one of the best at writing bedroom (couch, table, shower) scenes that transcend the usual same old same old. And with a real story that pulls the incendiary scenes together into one great story.

Great prequel! ! Very different vampire story, but really interesting. Ended in a good for now, but in a way that makes me want to read more. Super steamy scenes and a ménage one as well. Not dark, but to me a welcome break from it.
