Barbarous #2

Barbarous, Chapter 2

Rate this book
She's a wizard school dropout.

Persephone Mori is a wizard without a degree—and that's a big problem, because no one hires a wizard school dropout, even when she's from the most prestigious magic university in the country. With student loans calling and prospects looking dim, everything SERIOUSLY sucks.

That's when she's hired on as assistant to Leeds, the monstrous superintendent of a mysterious brownstone. Everything is great! Or it would be, if she and Leeds could just get along. They each have their own baggage and a hundred reasons to hate each other, but Persephone's determined to make it work—even if Leeds isn't. And he'd better watch out, because Persephone never gives up without a fight.

Chapter 2, here we go!

Again, stunning covers. The bright cyan mushrooms, the yellow lettering, the way our main duo just fills the front cover. The matte background and UV glossed details. Thematically and stylistically it's close to the first cover chapter's cover art.

The story and dynamics between all of our characters are growing. Last time we tiled a bathroom, now we're battling a colony of magical fungi and a trio of bubbly extroverts in a kitchen. Percy is trying to avoid more drama, and Leeds decides to try trusting her, at least a little. It's a fun time, and I enjoy all the hints about Percy's personality before her transformative event made her so hostile - the carelessness with money that shows she used to fully believe she would have a bright future ahead of her, the dread she feels when having to talk about her current situation with her dad or her past life to the people close to her in the present. It's clear she's compartmentalizing, like by keeping the two lives from mixing she could avoid... What? Giving up on either? The shame and disappointment?

(This is technically a reread! I'm binge-reading it instead of page by page like I did the first time to see how the story flows!)

In this chapter, we get more insight into both Percy and Leeds backstories, as well as meet a few of the other tenants. We find out that Percy has a strained relationship with her father and that she's also a college dropout. She's basically a prime example of a burnt-out former gifted kid. I do like that Percy is slowly trying to redeem her previous rude behavior from the first chapter. You can also see how Leeds and Percy are slowly getting to understand each other as well. This chapter is a step-up from the first chapter. There's not a ton of world-building though, asides from snippets.

Well, this was better than the first one. And the synopsis really helped to make sense of the story.

Still, I don't know where the story is going. The episode about the magic mushroom was quite funny and I love the way they drew the mushroom in question.

We got to know a little about Persephone's past and hopefully we'll learn more in the next chapters. For now the info are really insufficient. The third chapter will be the last I back, if I don't get a little bit of explanations.

Really digging the developing character dynamics In this series, and overall I think this was a much stronger chapter than the first, can’t wait to read more!

This chapter was just as fun as a reread as it was when I first discovered the web series. Chapter 2 of Barbarous starts to unravel the world and the character's motivations, a much needed addition that lacked in the series' introduction. Percy's angst makes a lot more sense and the Leeds reveal helps build this magical world. The art is so stunning and gives this comic a charm that really works. And can I just say...Leeds is such a babe! I love his character design. Muscles! Definitely boyfriend material.

It would be best to read ahead on the web series and support the authors when you can by picking up the physical copy. This story is for sure a slow burn and I can see where some readers would be disappointed with the pace if they only picked up the physical installments. Trust me, the world-building, magic, and characters only get better with each chapter.
