10 Publishing Myths offers authors the chance to succeed in the publishing world by giving them practical tools they can use to succeed and dodge the myths of the industry.
The publishing world is filled with misconceptions and myths. Therefore, it is terrific for authors to have big ambitions as their book is being published, but, it is also important to be realistic and understand the world of publishing. W. Terry Whalin has worked with hundreds of authors and published a number of bestsellers, and he knows that it is important to focus on creating a good book and not realistic about the business aspects. Within 10 Publishing Myths, Terry focuses on giving authors a realistic picture of the book world then detailing practical steps they can take to succeed. Inside 10 Publishing Myths, authors learn the actions they can take to succeed, they get a step-by-step guide for practical results, and so much more!
Author W. Terry Whalin states ten publishing myths, one per chapter. But he then offers valuable advice on how to become a published author rather than sit back and believe the myth. For instance in the opening chapter he addresses the myth “I Will Make a Lot of Money Writing My Book.” But he then explains how to promote your book to make it a profitable venture. I enjoyed his catchy quotes such as that of showman P. T. Barnum: “Without promotion, something terrible happens. Nothing.”
I especially liked the books and resources from himself and others that Whalin suggests throughout the book. My pages are marked with notations to “get it” and “check it out.”
For the beginning writer Whalin covers basics such as writing a query letter and a magazine article. But the advanced writer will also glean useful information as well as inspiration from Whalin’s own story. Although he’s written more than 60 books, he continues to read a how-to book on writing each month. He also works hard at the very practices he recommends—promoting, contacting, communicating with others in the field. Writers of all levels need that kind of direction. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for review. But I found this short book of 140 pages to be a quick but helpful read.
There's no fluff in W. Terry Whalin's short, highly readable antidote to kidding yourself about what to expect beyond the manuscript. Writers spend inordinate amounts of time obsessing about the craft of writing, but too often we are nothing short of delusional about how our work will reach readers. The right readers. For that reason, 10 Myths is an important addition to your arsenal.
Mr. Whalin has earned the right to dispense candid, reliable advice. He's an experienced editor and writer himself, and he's worked in publishing for many years. He lays out the facts without apology. They are what they are, and we are expected to be big boys and girls and make our choices accordingly. Mr. Whalin's objective, dispassionate approach to advising writers is one of my favorite aspects of his writing, whether an article or a book. He never comes off as if he's "selling" one course of action or another, unless it’s persistence, professionalism, and bringing the best product you can to the table. He's a ready advocate for these virtues.
Unless you're consistently knocking it out of the park with bestsellers, I recommend you get yourself a copy of 10 Publishing Myths. Keep it close for reference and read it cover to cover from time to time. It'll do you and your writing career good.
When I read Terry Whalin's book, "10 Publishing Myths," the first thing I thought of was one of the best-known quotes from TV, "Just the facts, ma'am," from the Dragnet series.
The book is jammed packed with myth-busting pearls of wisdom from Whalin's 25+ years in the book publishing arena as both an editor and writer. It's filled with just the facts.
"10 Publishing Myths" not only busts myths, it gives invaluable advice on how writers can get started, how to market themselves and their books, and how to steer clear of the traps and scams that permeate the book publishing arena.
As an author I wish I this book had come out when I first published. It would have saved a lot of pain and agony and time spent going down the wrong way streets of the world of publishing. Terry Whalin knows his stuff and freely shares the myths and how to bust those myths in each chapter.
Each chapter is ripe with stories of the myth, the truth and how to excel in the business of being an author. I especially love all the resources you can link to that help you make connections and streamline the work you have to do.
I highly recommend this book whether you want to be an author/writer or if you already are one.
10 Publishing Myths gets right to the point and in your face by forcing you, the writer, to take responsibility for your own success. There are many professionals you may choose to help along the way, but ultimately you are in charge. Each chapter gives detailed knowledge of an aspect of writing/publishing and ends with a bullet to shoot you into action. Terry’s easy-to-read style makes you want to get after it! So, don’t wait! Get your copy today, and take charge of your writing career.
Where was 10 Publishing Myths when I first started writing? Terry Whalin's book is packed with tips and techniques that will help the beginning reader, as well as the one that's been on the journey a little longer. Not only does he list ten false assumptions about writing, he then gives practical and professional suggestions to guide the reader to success along the writing journey.
My favorite chapter is probably chapter four, and the myth that he busts goes like this: "Beginning Writers Have no Chance to Get Published." I have a number of friends who gave up after a very short time along the writing journey, and had they had Terry's information in this chapter, I believe they would have stuck it out a little longer. Terry talks about query letters, book proposals, competitive books, personal plan for marketing, and much much more in that chapter.
Terry's experience with the various writing hats he's worn - writer, acquisitions editor, literary agent, just to name a few - makes him the perfect expert to break down the details of the publishing journey into language that those of us on the beginning of the journey can understand, comprehend, and put into action.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review. I plan to share it with others on the writing journey, and not only will they have Terry's words, they'll have my notes in the margins, stars next to a paragraph, and underlined sentences, too!
“10 Publishing Myths, Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed” by W. Terry Whalin Published by Morgan James Publishing, Morgan James ____
“10 Publishing Myths, Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed” is a must read for writers no matter where you are in your writing career. Each Myth is real and presented in an inspiring move forward, practical argument, from a writer who’s been there.
Some of my favorite parts include: take responsibility for your work, create your own marketing plan and make it happen, a great way to start out publishing your work is to write for magazines, every time you connect with an editor or agent you are making an impression—make it a good one!
W. Terry Whalin gives helpful recommendations and references to further your writing career. He talks about growing your skills by making a commitment to study the craft of writing by reading how-to books consistently, month by month. Take the long view of success, little steps to promote your writing and yourself over time.
I recommend this book for every writer and aspiring author. It is loaded with practical tips and actionable direction.
Thank you, W. Terry Whalin for providing me a review copy of “10 Publishing Myths, Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed”. I was not required to write a positive review, I receive no compensation, and it was my choice to write this review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
I first met Terry Whalin at the Indiana Faith and Writing Conference in the fall of 2014. I had just written my first novel and had no clue what to do with it. When I registered for the conference, they told me I had a free interview with someone in the industry. When I said I had no clue what I was even doing there, they suggested Terry due to his experience--that he is an excellent teacher. To demonstrate my ignorance, I didn’t even know what an Acquisitions Editor was! He patiently answered my neophyte questions, gave great guidance, including two of his other books, Book Proposals that Sell and Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams, and showed me that a good story does not necessarily mean a good book. His patience in working with me made it possible for Stranded at Romson’s Lodge to be published by Morgan James Publishing in 2016.
Terry’s teaching abilities come through in this, his newest release. 10 Publishing Myths (Morgan James Publishing) goes beyond just pointing out ideas many have about publishing. The author explains the truth in ways easy to understand so that a newbie, such as I was, and even more experienced authors can apply to improve our lives as writers.
The discerning writer will benefit from resources referenced within the text and from links provided. Some I have in my library and have benefited from. Others I will be acquiring soon.
I received an ARC from the author in hopes of an honest review. Honest is the only way I know to be.
The best source for information is someone who has “been there, done that”—and when it comes to publishing, W. Terry Whalin has been there, done that, and generously shares what he knows in 10 Publishing Myths.
If you’re thinking about writing a book or if you’ve written one and are struggling with the publishing process,10 Publishing Myths will answer your questions, tell you how the business works, and give you clear action steps to increase your chances of a successful writing career.
Wherever you are in your writing career, this book is worth reading. Because I’ve been writing professionally for more than three decades, I’ve shared many of Whalin’s experiences. Even so, I finished this book with some good ideas and actions to take to promote my own books and increase sales.
This is a quick, easy read. Whalin states the myth then explains why it’s a myth, what the reality is and how you can make the best of the reality.
All ten myths are important, but my two favorites are: One “I Will Make a Lot of Money Writing My Book” (I wish!) and Ten “The Life of a Writer is Glamorous” (I’m glad it’s not). The reality is that most books don’t make a lot of money and a writer’s life isn’t glamorous.
Does that mean you shouldn’t write and try to publish a book? No. In fact, if you follow Whalin’s advice, you’ll significantly increase your chances of a successful book.
As a writing coach, I get lots of questions about publishing (and writing) from writers, so I was excited to read this new book from W. Terry Whalin. And I wasn't disappointed. It answers most of the questions I get from writers (thank you, Terry!) as well as many of my own questions about publishing models.
I really like the way the book is organized, too. The Table of Contents is handy for locating the answer to a specific question. For example, when writers ask me, "Should I self-publish my book?" the answer is found in Chapter 8, which gives information (and resources) about different publishing models— important stuff for any writer to know before he decides if self-publishing is the best option for his book.
Each chapter of the book ends with an action step for writers to take once they understand that much of what they've probably thought they knew about publishing was merely a myth.
This book is a must read for all writers, whether they decide to self-publish or have their work traditionally published. It's a handy resource I'll be turning to often.
I’ve searched for books about publishing to help guide me as I prepare to self-publish my first children’s book. Fortunately, I found Terry Whalin’s book early, before the launch of my book. 10 Publishing Myths is chock full of helpful information gleaned from his extensive background in publishing, and lessons he and others have learned from their publishing experiences. Most helpful are the online and book resources generously sprinkled throughout the book, and the realization that the one overlying principle for every author, traditionally published or not, is that it is our responsibility to create a marketing plan and market our book. No author can rely on their publisher or anyone else to take on this job. This is the second book by Terry Whalin that has helped me seek to fulfill my publishing dreams: Book Proposals that Sell: 21 Secrets to Speed your Success. I plan to follow up by reading the many resources Whalin offers online, which are included in his books.
Terry Whalin’s “10 Publishing Myths” is a small book with a big message. Actually, ten big messages. Each chapter begins with a popular myth about publishing and proceeds to explain the fallacy behind the myth and outline how to avoid the pitfalls. Each chapter ends with a practical “Myth Buster Action” to help authors remove their rose-colored glasses and get realistic about publishing. For example, Myth Buster Action #1 is “Take 100% responsibility as an author to sell your books.”
There is much practical wisdom to be found here. Mr. Whalin’s long history in the publishing business is evident in the experiences and advice he offers. In addition, he has generously sprinkled references to books, websites, and other resources throughout the book to benefit the reader.
If you’re serious about becoming a successful writer, this is a book you’ll want to read and keep close at hand.
Great Guide Every Author Needs to Succeed As a first time author W. Terry Whalin's book exceeded expectations. Relatable, believable because the author is an authority on writing, publishing and acquiring books for the Publishing Industry, I never doubted the content. In fact it cleared up several myths and validated what I learned as an author were truths. I liked the easy to read format: Each Chapter one Myth and then a MBA, Myth busting action at the end. Powerful accountability! Two learnings I will action right away including downloading Free EBook to expand my Book Marketing Platform. Many more free stuff within!
Ten Publishing Myths is a must-read for anyone who aspires to write a book for publication. Terry Whalin doesn’t just address myths in general, he addresses myths I’ve personally heard writers speak of as truth. In addition to debunking publishing myths, the author provides bonuses in the form of MBAs (Myth Buster Actions) listed at the end of each chapter. Grouped together, they comprise a practical guide for serious writers. Ten Publishing Myths is an easy read with long-term benefits for anyone seeking publication. I received a complimentary copy of this book, however this review is my own opinion. Even though I'm a published author, I plan on implementing several of the MBAs to benefit my own publishing journey!
Authors: Get This Book! I wouldn’t be an author today if it wasn’t for Terry Whalin’s how-to books on publishing. He helped me turn a collection of adventure stories into a popular book on travel funding; then did it again for my second book, this one about voluntourism – the art of lending a hand wherever one travels. 10 Publishing Myths was especially helpful in my journey to authorhood. It will temper your expectations of financial gain; make you less reliant on your publisher’s enthusiasm for promoting your book; and advise on how to perfect your craft. This book is the secret weapon any writer needs to get published.
10 Publishing Myths is insightful and honest, yet encouraging. Revealing pitfalls all new authors should know, it has enlightened and challenged me as I prepare to launch my first book. 10 Marketing Myths made it clear that the burden for marketing lies on MY shoulders, with solid guidance on putting together my plan. Big value in a succinct package. Thank you, Terry Whalin!

Information from an experienced book and magazine author, editor, reviewer, and extensive knowledge about publishing industry. Steps to take if believing myths has caused your book efforts to stall. The role of the publisher, author, editor, and publicist are all explained. Authors ofter misunderstand these roles. Success depends on understanding what must be done, and how to continually do what is needed.
I'm a new author, and this simple read is a helpful - truly helpful - guide to take your book and push it out! Terry has loads of experience and in this approachable, clear book of insights, it felt like Terry was coaching us along the way to move out the message of our book. Keep it where you work and refer to it often!
10 Publishing Myths by W. Terry Whalin is a great craft book helping authors understand what publishing a book entails - and what it doesn't. Many writers get started on the path to authorship without a real understanding of what comes after the book is written. Terry's book gives authors a realistic look at what to expect.
I loved that the book gave real-life examples, actionable tips, and even links for more information. It's a quick read but stuffed with great information - whether you are published or not. This book should be on every author's bookshelf.
Whether you are a published author or have a desire to write for publication, W. Terry Whalin's book TEN PUBLISHING MYTHS is something every writer needs to read. With decades of experience in the writing and publishing industry, Mr. Whalin offers practical and useful advice that will give writers the tools they need to succeed and avoid the pitfalls that discourage many writers. From writing query letters and magazine writing to submitting to publishers and self-publishing, every aspect of writing and publishing is offered in this book. Each chapter focuses on one of 10 publishing myths and explores the truth that dispels the myth. My favorite chapter is Chapter 7: Good Writers Are Born, Not Made. Though it's true that some writers may have more of a natural talent for writing, anyone with a desire to learn and work hard can find a place in the writing world. Each chapter ends with an MBA--Myth Busting Action, offering practical assignments to help writers reach their goals. Besides valuable writing lessons, the book also addresses the critical aspect of marketing and what writers can do to sell their books. As the author states, "Marketing your book is your responsibility." Mr. Whalin gives detailed instructions on the many ways authors can market their books. I also enjoyed the many personal stories the author weaves into the text, making the book more than an instruction manual. The stories help to reinforce the ideas and concepts and show how implementing them has positive results. Writing is a creative process that needs to be developed, and publishing is a business that can fail or be successful. When writers learn everything they can before they dive in, they greatly increase their chances for success. I highly recommend this book!
I purchased this book because I'm a freelance book editor and I'm getting more clients asking me about issues related to self-publishing, so I decided to start reading more about what is going on in the industry. This is a great book and the author covers so many topics, it's going to take me awhile to digest it all and follow-up on the information presented that I want to follow up on.
Even though the creation of books has never been easier, there is a reality many authors don't realize according to Whalin. That reality is this: while making the book may be easy, getting people to purchase the book will take hard work and persistent effort. A lot of the book discusses ways to prepare for and market your book/s whether you self-publish or find a traditional publisher. He also encourages people who are not yet writers to consider starting with a focus on getting some articles published.
I love how he backs up his advice with stories, his personal experiences and statistics to drive it home with. He says that one of his favorite ways to learn about the writing craft and market is through how-to books related to writing, something he's been doing for around 25 years. He says he reads them, marks in them and takes action from the suggestions inside the pages. Let's hope I can follow his example & do all the follow-up work I've made notes on.
I like his writing style--he uses short and very easy-to-understand sentences. The book is well worth the money I paid for it and think it can help both beginning writers and those more advanced authors in the business.
Terry Whalin's book, "10 Publishing Myths: Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed" is a must read for every author who is thinking about, or in the process of publishing their book.
How I wish I had this book before I started publishing my first book. I was so convinced, that I was going to make money, that I would be famous, the list goes on. None of it true.
This book breaks down the myths and gives you a dose of reality for our author want to be symptoms.
10 Publishing Myths is filled with relevant stories, facts and details to help you see the truth of publishing.
Think your book is going to get into the bookstore? Think again. You can't just walk into a bookstore and sell your book. And if you use the wrong service. You will not get it into bookstores.
Is writing a book difficult? You bet. The hardest part is getting people to buy and read your book.
Are you ready for a hint? As an author, after you write the book, your work has just started! Because you have just become the chief marketing officer.
The publishing road is very difficult...but it is worth it if you do it the right way. 10 Publishing Myths will help you!
This book is excellent for beginners, not so much for people with some expertise and experience. Some myths are there and to be debunked. Whalin does a good job of that to a degree but 'Making money, 'becoming famous' are not serious 'myths' and are too easily shot down.
The book is also repetitious. He must mention his own experiences ten times in almost the same words.
This helps in one way because he has published, edited, and produced much in the field of religious writing. It does not matter what field his experience is in because the remarks are illustrative cases of general problems and are informative but it is tiresome for an observant reader. It is not for an experienced writer or book marketer.
Whether a beginning writer or seasoned, W. Terry Whalin’s book offers needed information on promotion, earnings, fame, editing, attaining the New York Times Bestseller list, and self-publishing. There are so many links in this work that I bought the eBook after reading the print book in order to have access to the added information. (Hint: there’s also an eleventh publishing myth online.)
The author has several years of writing, selling and editing experience which motivated him to help writers get past the myths and face the realities. Realities which he has suggestions for overcoming in each myth section. Short and helpful, this book offers practical suggestions for writers in their quest for publication.
I was not expecting this book to include so many tips on book promotion. But I took away several practical, helpful ideas. For example, in the chapter where Terry discusses the myth, "My Publisher Will Sell and Promote My Book," he offers ideas anyone can try that have been used by authors of successful books such as "Chicken Soup for the Soul."
All through the book Terry gives examples of how he has used the advice he offers, so he isn't recommending what he hasn't tested himself. And with 60 books to his credit, you know you are getting what is "tried-and-true."
This is a great, short book that gives practical advice for anyone wanting to write a book...and actually sell copies! I appreciate that the author doesn't engage in hype but instead paints a clear picture of what being a writer entails, warts and all. As a bonus, he mentioned a number of other books and other resources throughout to help you continue on your journey of writing; I'll be adding several to my to-read list.
I read it in one day and didn't want to put it down. There is so much valuable information and resources for every author. I have many sticky notes and highlights of actions for me to take. I strongly recommend this book to all authors who want to sell more books, increase their platform, gain more knowledge and insight on how to be the best author you can be. Fabulous book!
I had the opportunity to interview Mr Whalin for my podcast and I not only is this book a well of great information, Terry is a wonderful conversationalist. If you are ready to write the next great American Novel, or if you have already published it, read this book to get great insights on every aspect of getting your book in the hands of your audience.
