About the author

Victoria Hislop read English at Oxford, and worked in publishing, PR and as a journalist before becoming a novelist. She is married with two children.

Her first novel, The Island, held the number one slot in the Sunday Times paperback charts for eight consecutive weeks and has sold over two million copies worldwide. Victoria was the Newcomer of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards 2007 and won the Richard & Judy Summer Read competition.

Her second novel, The Return, was also a Sunday Times number one bestseller, and her books have been translated into more than twenty languages. A short story collection, One Cretan Evening, was published in September and both a third novel, The Thread is published in English in October and in Greek in November 2011.

I think we all have read books which we have trouble rating and Those Who Are Loved by Victoria Hislop is one of those books that I am finding it difficult to rate as while I liked parts of the book other parts felt slow and tedious and a little confusing

Set in Athens 1941 and after decades of political uncertainly Greece is polarized between right and left wing views when the Germans invade. We watch events unfold through the eyes of one family who become torn apart by war.

I liked the first half of the novel and found the historical events interesting as I had very little knowledge of this time in Greece’s history. However I didn't connect with the family and felt their stories in the book were very contrived and forced to fit in with events and time and didn't sit well with me for some reason that I just cant explain here. There were two family members who had very silimar names and I really had a hard time figuring out who was who until half ways through the novel which really didn't help with my enjoyment of the book.

A long and slow read where I liked the historical element of the story but not enough to recommend this one or to add it to my favorites list.

The book starts in Athens in 2016 where Themis an old lady is surrounded by her family for a birthday gathering. Her last gift to her family is her life story which she starts to tell.

We then go back to the 1930’s where Themis is growing up with her siblings Thanasis, Panos and Margarita. The family is divided over their beliefs of the war and the communists ruling Greece. Themis finds it hard to put her point of view across over her head strong brothers who are always arguing!!

Themis joins the communists fighters but ends up as a prisoner enduring physical violence and hard labour. When she is released she later marries and has a family, but what happened to her is always like a black cloud hanging over her.

This book is well researched, it’s characters are well formed especially Themis who you can’t help but love.

Even if you are not into history this book is a delightful read which is totally engrossing.

Will definitely look out for Victoria Hislop’s next book.

I really wanted to like Victoria Hislop's new book. The premise seemed promising and so the beginning of the book when an unexpected event sets things in motion. At this moment I gasped and I was very excited about what may follow.
The novel gives the impression that it has been thoroughly researched and I need to congratulate the author for getting many aspects of the modern Greek culture and mentality right. Her intentions are good but, unfortunately, the execution seems to have slightly failed.
I felt that somewhere between the desire to talk about the conflicts and tribulations of the Greek nation and tell a story at the same time, the author prioritised the history over the substance. Most of the characters were one-dimensional and even the main character seemed a bit flat. Knowing the Greek history I also felt that the plot was built to serve the reported history and not the other way around. As a result, I'm afraid it was full of cliches and there were no surprises.
Funnily enough, the most interesting characters were the ones missing, e.g. the figures of the mother and father of the Koralis family. How could their mother disappear like that and none of her children ever cared about her? And how no one questioned or even got angry with the absence and later abandonment by their father? Things like these gave me the impression that the characters were not well-rounded but merely built to serve the plot.

Those Who Are Loved by Victoria Hislop was an atmospheric book set in Greece during the Second World War and the terrible toll in took on the Islands inhabitants.
This is the story of Themis and her family and how they tried to survive.

Embora Victoria Hislop tenha já vários livros publicados, esta é a minha estreia com a autora. Posso, desde já, afirmar que não vou ficar por aqui, e que pretendo ler toda a sua obra. Porque este “Quem é Amado Nunca Morre” entrou, seguramente, no top do ano! Aqui está um livro completo, com uma narrativa brilhante, detalhada sem ser maçuda, intensa sem ser dramática, rica em pormenores da História da Grécia. Fui apanhada de surpresa, porque imaginava que seria um romance mais leve, mas não, antes pelo contrário, é uma leitura absorvente, cativante e sempre interessante. Não senti um momento de tédio ou cansaço ao ler estas páginas!

I've been reading a lot of WWII books this year but what sets Those Who Are Loved by Victoria Hislop is that it is set in Greece. I've yet to read anything about the German occupation of Greece so it was fascinating, and of course, heartbreaking and infuriating. This book had all the feels!

Themis is a young woman when the Nazis invade her homeland. She and her siblings live with their grandmother, and the politics of the day divide the siblings, which is frightening similar to what is happening to families around the world today with regards to the left and right. In the book, we see how the invasion of the Germans and then the British affect Themis, her friends, and her family. It was absolutely engrossing!

Hislop is a master at bringing the atrocities that happened to Greece and it's people during this tumultuous time in history to life. Beautifully written and well-researched, Those Who Have Lost is why I read historical fiction. I will never forget Themis or what happened to the people of Greece. And I sincerely hope we don't have to live through something like that again. Be warned...have tissues ready!

This is my first read from Victoria Hislop but I loved her writing so I'm going to go and pick up her other books. I love finding a new author that I can binge!

Πραγματικά δεν ξέρω από που να ξεκινήσω για αυτό το βιβλίο. Θα προσπαθήσω να μην μακρηγορήσω.

Η Θέμις, η κεντρική ηρωίδα του βιβλίου, αποδεικνύει περίτρανα το πόσο αντιπροσωπευτικός είναι ο τίτλος του βιβλίου. «Όσοι αγαπιούνται» - απόσπασμα από τον «Επιταφιο» του Ριτσου, πως όσοι αγαπιούνται, και νεκροί, ποτέ τους δεν πεθαίνουν. Ενσαρκώνει όλες εκείνες τις γυναίκες που κατά την διάρκεια του εμφυλίου, φόρεσαν παντελόνια ( πράγμα ανήκουστο για την εποχή ) και πολέμησαν μεταφορικά και μη για τα ιδανικά και τα πιστεύω τους. Μια άκρως δυναμική φεμινίστρια η οποία έζησε τον Εμφύλιο, την Χούντα και συνεχείς αλλαγές πολιτευμάτων και όμως έμεινε ακλόνητη στην ατέρμονη προσφορά αγάπης στα μέλη της οικογένειας της και όχι μόνο, και στα πιστεύω της.

Διαβάζοντας το, με έκανε να διερωτηθώ το εξής: είναι εύλογο για τα ιδανικά σου να απαρνηθείς και να απορρίψεις άτομα που αγαπάς ή την οικογένεια σου;Πλείστα τα παραδείγματα που έγινε πράξη στον εμφύλιο διχάζοντας οικογένειες.

Εν κατακλείδι, η Hislop αποδεικνύει ότι είναι μια από τις σπουδαιότερες της γενιάς της. Ερευνά και μαθαίνει για ιστορικά γεγονότα της χώρας μας και τα μετατρέπει σε λογοτεχνία. Γνήσια, όμορφη και φωτεινή λογοτεχνία.
Αναμφίβολα πρέπει να διαβαστεί από όποιον δεν το έχει κάνει ήδη !!

Good intentions are never enough. The writer wanted to tell the story of a large family and at the same time the story of a very complicated historical period. So nothing is completed at the end. Characters are not well developed, emotions seems unrealistic and sometimes it gets really boring .

Posso adiantar que cumpriu com o propósito - leitura bastante absorvente e que me trouxe uma contextualização histórica muito interessante.

Sobre a história de vida da Themis que vive numa família dividida pelos seus ideais políticos. Num cenário de incerteza, discórdia, miséria e guerra que marcam o país nesta altura.
Desde a 2a Guerra Mundial, passando pela Guerra Civil e terminando nos nossos dias vivemos a vida desta família e enriquecemos o nosso conhecimento sobre a história da Grécia ao longo de todos estes anos.

Gostei muito por, apesar de ser sobre a 2a Guerra Mundial, ser passado na Grécia, o que não é comum, e não só me permitiu aprender mais, como ler sobre o impacto da Guerra de um outro ponto de vista.
Gostei muito por se passar no seio de uma família, sobre a relação entre irmãos com pontos de vista muito diferentes, sobre como a política afasta e junta as pessoas e interfere nas relações.

Gostei mesmo muito porque dentro do género acaba por ser muito diferente.

Sobre o amor, a amizade, as preferências e as afinidades, os ciúmes, o sofrimento, a perda, o perdão, a aceitação, sobre os ideais políticos e as crenças, sobre o passado, o arrependimento e a verdade.
Mas sobretudo sobre pessoas, sobre a família, sobre o amor e sobre os que ficam para sempre em nós e nos nossos corações mesmo depois de partirem.

Of course, I did not wait for this book to understand the author's sincere interest in Greek history and the respect which she treats every effort to include it in a novel, this is already known to the Greek reading public. What I may have realized by reading this book that covers most of the turbulent political history of the 20th century is that this sincere effort has enabled her to understand in greater depth what she ultimately writes, with her position as an outside observer ensuring greater objectivity. Okay, I can not say that there is much political analysis in this book but I guess that her purpose was more to show something more human, how all this affected the lives of ordinary people.

The author shows this influence through the story of a woman who, growing up in the 1930s, experiences every stage of this history, the dictatorship of Metaxas, the Second World War, the civil war, the persecution of the left, the dictatorship of 1967 and the last more quiet years of compromise and selective oblivion. She watches many of the most important events closely and as she sided with the left she has an active role in what she considers the real liberation of her homeland but the frustration comes quickly and in the end, she is punished by a regime that does not forgive challenge. At the end comes the accounting that makes her wonder about her actions or their absence at critical points, about the outcome of each struggle and what the future holds for this troubled country.

The author gives us these in a sensitive and emotionally rich way, focusing on the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist as pass before the eyes of the reader all the events that affected her, injured her, disappointed her and sometimes gave her hope for the kindness of some people who can heal the wounds of the past, on a personal and wider level. This creates a result that I found particularly moving but also very essential

Φυσικά δεν περίμενα αυτό το βιβλίο για να καταλάβω για το ειλικρινές ενδιαφέρον της συγγραφέως για την Ελληνική ιστορία και για τον σεβασμό που αντιμετωπίζει κάθε προσπάθειά της να την συμπεριλάβει σε ένα μυθιστόρημα της, όλα αυτά είναι ήδη γνωστά στο Ελληνικό αναγνωστικό κοινό. Αυτό που ίσως κατάλαβα διαβάζοντας αυτό το βιβλίο που καλύπτει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ταραγμένης πολιτικής ιστορίας του 20ου αιώνα είναι ότι αυτή η ειλικρινής προσπάθεια της της το έχει δώσει τη δυνατότητα να καταλαβαίνει σε μεγαλύτερο βάθος αυτά που τελικά γράφει, με την ιδιότητα της ως εξωτερική παρατηρήτρια να της εξασφαλίζει μεγαλύτερη αντικειμενικότητα. Εντάξει, δεν μπορώ να πω ότι υπάρχει πολύ μεγάλη πολιτική ανάλυση σε αυτό το βιβλίο αλλά φαντάζομαι ότι ο σκοπός της ήταν περισσότερο να δείξει κάτι περισσότερο ανθρώπινο, πώς επηρέασαν όλα αυτά τις ζωές των απλών ανθρώπων.

Πολλά από τα σημαντικότερα γεγονότα τα παρακολουθεί από κοντά και καθώς τάσσεται στο πλευρό της αριστεράς έχει ενεργό ρόλο σε αυτό που θεωρεί πραγματική απελευθέρωση της πατρίδας της αλλά η απογοήτευση έρχεται γρήγορα και στο τέλος υφίσταται την τιμωρία από ένα καθεστώς που δεν συγχωρεί την αμφισβήτηση. Στο τέλος έρχεται ο απολογισμός που την κάνει να αναρωτιέται για τις πράξεις της ή για την απουσία αυτών σε κρίσιμα σημεία, για το αποτέλεσμα κάθε αγώνα και για το τι επιφυλάσσει το μέλλον σε αυτή την ταλαίπωρη χώρα.

Αυτά η συγγραφέας μας τα δίνει με έναν ευαίσθητο και συναισθηματικά πλούσιο τρόπο, επικεντρωμένη στις σκέψεις και τα συναισθήματά της πρωταγωνίστριας καθώς περνάνε μπροστά από τα μάτια του αναγνώστη όλα τα γεγονότα που την επηρέασαν, την τραυμάτισαν, την απογοήτευσαν αλλά και μερικές φορές της έδωσαν ελπίδα για την καλοσύνη μερικών ανθρώπων που μπορεί να γιατρέψει τις πληγές του παρελθόντος, σε προσωπικό και σε ευρύτερο επίπεδο. Έτσι δημιουργείται ένα αποτέλεσμα που το βρήκα ιδιαίτερα συγκινητικό αλλά και πολύ ουσιώδες

My most favourite Victoria Hislop book is The Island however, Those Who Are Loved now sits up there alongside it. It’s not a quick read and requires time and investment but it is so worthwhile immersing yourself into this wonderful story.

Those We Have Loved is an epic story of Greece’s turbulent and often brutal political history from 1930 through to modern day and is a captivating and powerful read. Focusing on one family – and one character in particular, it is wonderfully told story of personal conviction and strength of character.

Themis Koralis (to use her family name) is our main character and the story begins with her in 2016 as an elderly woman, surrounded by four generations of her family to celebrate her birthday. Following the celebrations, she tells her story to two of her older grandchildren and this is where her life story unfolds.

As a young child she is bought up in an apartment in Athens by her grandmother after a devastating event causes a family split. Her young life is not a particularly happy one. Although her grandmother does her best for all the children and to provide for them during particularly difficult times, her elder sister Margarita is spiteful and nasty whilst her two elder brothers Panos and Thanasis are always at loggerheads and tensions are fraught as they have different political beliefs. One was a passionate believer in the Government’s collusion with Germany believing the Germans to be allies and the other is an ardent communist.

As Themis matures, she witnesses tragedy and extreme suffering caused by the German occupation beginning in 1941, followed by civil war and makes up her mind which path she will follow. This decision will shape the rest of her life and will have both tragic and dramatic repercussions.

I had no real idea of how violent and turbulent Greece’s political history had been and how much death and suffering had been caused by politics and through Themis, Victoria Hislop has walked me through decades of Greek history.

I am not sure whether I would have made the same decisions as Themis, but I admired her greatly for having the courage of her convictions and for staying true to her beliefs. She was a marvellous character and one that absolutely made the story for me.

The story has everything, drama, tragedy, cruelty, love, tenderness and joy. I was so completely enthralled and even though this is a fairly hefty sized book, my interest never wavered. Man’s inhumanity and cruelty were sometimes hard to read but then there were times when people who had nothing, came together to help one another.

I know from previous books that Greece is Victoria Hislop’s specialist subject but even so, the amount of research required to produce a story rich in such detail with such vivid imagery shines through. I loved it and if you want a book that not only entertains but educates as well, then look no further!

Este é já o quarto livro que leio da autora e, foi como que regressar ao encanto da história que encontrei em A Ilha, o primeiro que li de Victoria Hislop.
Acompanhamos a história de Themis, em Atenas, desde a sua infância até à velhice, e encontramos uma história que me apaixonou logo nas primeiras páginas. 
Através de Themis, vamos conhecer a história da Grécia, a partir dos anos 30. Uma história vem complicada, não só financeiramente mas politicamente conturbada, só que viveu com a ocupação nazi e as várias mudanças de governos e a guerra civil. E é também através de Themis e da sua família que compreendemos melhor estas diferenças, já que, os quatro irmãos são muito diferentes e temos os dois lados políticos, isto é, quem defenda os nazis e quem lute pelo ideal comunista. E, Themis, acredita no comunismo e acaba por integrar nos grupos de guerrilheiros, e onde acaba por ser presa e condenada nas ilhas. 
Com uma escrita que nos cativa, a autora faz um fabuloso trabalho de contextualização histórica, sem ser maçuda, criando uma narrativa que nos faz emocionar e sofreram, não só com Themis mas com a sua família
Se gostam, não só da 2ª Guerra Mundial mas também de guerras civis, então, têm que ler este livro!

✒️ Історія починається з того, що у 2016-му році в маленькій квартирці в Афінах зібралися чотири покоління на святкування 90 років найстаршій жінці в родині. Частина з нащадків давно живе не в Греції, матріархиня тужить, що вони втратили свою грецьку грецкість і їй нема що передати нащадкам, окрім рецептів пиріжків, поруч сидить патріарх у глибокій деменції і здається найщаливішим з усіх двох десятків людей у хаті.

🎭 І раптом ця 90-річна іменинниця, дивлячись у вікно, каже: "ось там вона померла, сконала від голоду", що викликає певну бентегу в онуків.

📚 І це ж відкриває скриньку Пандори, бо героїня раптом розуміє, вона таки може ще щось докласти до рецептів пиріжків, а саме — історію свого життя. І починає її розповідати з самого початку, з тих часів, як було їй рочки 3-4 і їхній старий будинок завалився і довелося всій родині переїхати до імення свекрухи, і далі по роках — школа, молодість, заміжжя, війна, окупація, післявоєнний час, конфлікти з-за неспівпадінь поглядів та цінностей.

🍷 В цілому, як родинна сага, книга прекрасна. Так, це оповідь про життя однієї особи, але є трішки історії її батьків, а потім й числених нащадків. І написано гарно, і епізоди чергуються то сумні, то обнадійливі. І подій було стільки, що дивуєшся, як вони в такий короткий обсяг вмістилися.

Дуже, знаєтє лі, важко обрати за кого вболівати в цій книзі, бо половина родини — калібровані, довбані на голову фашисти, а оповідачка — така сама притрушена комуняка. І ти такий сидиш з книгою в руках, а в голові у тебе отой мем із двома дерев'яними песиками на коліщатках, яким собачка каже самі-знаєте-що.

⚰️ А найстрашніше, що вона у кінці життя ще й пишається, що "боролася з окупантами". Щоправда, її боротьба полягала у тому, аби разом із загоном ввірватися в село, в якому лишилися тільки старі, ��інки та діти, забрати всі припаси, вкрасти підлітків, вбити матерів, які чіпляються за своїх дітей, а потім цих викрадених дітей гнати у ліси на базу, де з них "зроблять справжніх комуністів". Ось така її боротьба виходила.

📚 Реально, реально нема кому поспівчувати і вболіваєш за обидві команди, що називається.

🦋 Але написано дійсно цікаво. Чесне #Дафа_радить, але будьте готові до купи тригерів, починаючи з того, що справді гарних людей тут немає.

You can always rely on Victoria Hislop to take you away to another time and place. She has that magic touch where she mixes well researched history and a personal love of a country and its people and paints a vivid, raw and fascinating picture.

The story starts in Athens in 2016 . It’s here we meet Themis who is an old woman and is gathering her family around to tell them a story. Her story, Their story. This then takes us back to the 1930s as we take Themis’s hand and go with her as she opens her heart and soul.

Get the tissues read – this is a tearful and often painfully emotional journey. Themis and her siblings are growing up and the world is one of excitement and wonder. At least it should be. War is looming and the communists are ruling Greece. The family is divided over the rights and wrongs of this war.

Later on, Themis joins the communists fighters but ends up as a prisoner. Her experiences and story at this point will make you read slower. The raw emotion rise up from the page on each and every word. There is violence, injustice, hard labour and worse. These parts of the book were very raw and as she tells the story, you can only imagine what her family are thinking and going through with her. This is the pain she carries with her to the present day. There is so much to learn about the German occupation of Greece. I admit I knew practically nothing of this. A fascinating yet painful period of history. Hislop presents this in a very accessible way which has more impact than any history book could ever have. This has the Hislop personal touch.

You have to find out what happens for yourself as Themis is such a wonderful character. Her voice must come to you when it’s just you and her via this book. I was moved throughout and stunned at the level of research involved. It never felt like I was reading a history book though such is the skill of the author. Hislop manages to mix fact and fiction and create a tapestry of history and human soul. When you look, you don’t see the individual stitches, but step back and what an overall picture of heritage and history presents itself to you.

Another triumph for Victoria Hislop!

Τα χρόνια του Δεύτερου Παγκόσμιου Πολέμου αλλά και αυτά της μεταπολίτευσης αναβιώνουν μέσα από τα μάτια της Βιτκόρια Χίσλοπ, της Βρετανίδας συγγραφέα με την Ελληνική καρδιά.

Η ηρωίδα του βιβλίου είναι η Θέμις, που τη γνωρίζουμε σαν μια ηλικιωμένη γυναίκα που γιορτάζει τα γενέθλιά της, περιστοιχισμένη από την οικογένειά της, τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια της που την αγαπούν πολύ, γύρω από ένα βαρύ μαοένιο τραπέζι. Στο τέλος της γιορτής, απομένει μόνη με τον άντρα της και δύο από τα εγγόνια της, αυτά που νιώθει πιο κοντά της. Αποφασίζει να τους διηγηθεί την ιστορία της κι εκείνα, μένουν άναυδα μαθαίνοντας τόσα κρυμμένα μυστικά για το παρελθόν της αγαπημένης τους γιαγιάς, ενός πράου και φιλήσυχου ανθρώπου.

Η Θέμις, έχοντας γεννηθεί τέταρτη και τελευταία σε μια οικογένεια με άλλα δύο αγόρια και ένα κορίτσι, έχει μάθει από μικρή να μένει αόρατη και πολλές φορές να μαθαίνει και να ακούει πράγματα που δεν προορίζονται για τα αυτιά της. Με πατέρα ναυτικό και μια μάνα που προσπαθεί να τα προλάβει όλα σε ένα ετοιμόρροπο παλιό αρχοντικό, δεν έχει δεχθεί όση αγάπη και τρυφερότητα θα ήθελε, αλλά δεν είναι και ότι της λείπει τελείως. Όταν σε ένα σεισμό το αρχοντικό, η προίκα της μητέρας της καταρρέει, καταφεύγουν όλοι μαζί στο σπίτι της γιαγιάς τους, θέλοντας και μη. Εκεί η μητέρα τους χάνει κάθε ενδιαφέρον για ζωή, τώρα που δεν έχει τόσα πολλά να απασχοληθεί και η γιαγιά γίνεται για όλους μια δεύτερη μάνα, το αποκούμπι και η αγκαλιά που αποζητούν.

Μεγαλώνοντας τα αδέρφια χωρίζονται από τα διαφορετικά πιστεύω και τις πεποιθήσεις που έχουν. Με τη γιαγιά το μόνο ενήλικο πλέον στο σπίτι να κρατάει τις ισορροπίες, τα πράγματα αρκετές φορές ξεφεύγουν. Ο μεγάλος αδερφός της Θέμιδας αλλά και η αδερφή της υποστηρίζουν τον δικτάτορα Μεταξά και συμμετέχουν με χαρά στη νεολαία της ΕΟΝ. Η ίδια και ο άλλος της αδερφός δεν έχουν την ίδια άποψη. Σε ένα όμως συμφωνούν και τα τέσσερα αδέρφια. Στο «όχι» του Μεταξά στους Ιταλούς. Από εκεί και πέρα όμως στο σπίτι δημιουργούνται αντίπαλα στρατόπεδα που θα μείνουν ενεργά για μια ζωή. Τα πνεύματα θα οξυνθούν περισσότερο κατά τη διάρκεια της κατοχής και θα φτάσουν σε απίστευτα μεγέθη μέχρι τον εμφύλιο που συντάραξε ολόκληρη τη χώρα.

Η Θέμις, όπως και ο αδερφός της ο Πάνος είναι με το μέρος της Αριστεράς. Για την ακρίβεια, η Θέμις πιστεύει στην ελευθερία και στα ίσα δικαιώματα για όλους τους ανθρώπους. Είναι κατά κάθε μορφής καταπίεσης και αυτός είναι και ένας λόγος που ταυτίστηκα μαζί της. Δεν μπορώ να πω πως συμφωνήσαμε σε όλα, όμως στα περισσότερα σημεία είχαμε κοινή άποψη. Οι ιδέες αυτές των δύο παιδιών θα τους φέρουν στο προσκήνιο της δράσης. Και οι δυο θα πάρουν μέρος στην αντίσταση με μεγαλύτερο ή μικρότερο ρόλο, θα κάνουν όμως ότι μπορούν να διώξουν τον κατακτητή. Στο οικογενειακό τραπέζι όμως οι διαφωνίες με τον μεγάλο τους αδερφό το Θανάση που είναι αστυνομικός, αλλά και με τη Μαργαρίτα που ενθουσιάζεται με τις στολές των Γερμανών στρατιωτών και τη γαλαντομία τους ανάβουν φωτιές που προσπαθεί με χίλιους τρόπους να σβήσει η γιαγιά τους. Αλλά και όταν οι κατακτητές φύγουν, τα δύο αδέρφια, το ένα μετά το άλλο, θα καταφύγουν στο Δημοκρατικό Στρατό για να πολεμήσουν αυτούς που συνεργάστηκαν με τους Γερμανούς αλλά και αυτούς που συνεχίζουν ακόμα να καταπατούν τις ανθρώπινες ελευθερίες. Όσο κι αν είναι ενάντιοι σε κάποιες από τις τακτικές του ΔΣΕ, που στην ουσία τους κάνουν ίδιους και απαράλαχτους με αυτούς που πολεμούν, θα τηρήσουν τον όρκο τους. Η Θέμις θα συλληφθεί και θα βρεθεί εξορισμένη στη Μακρόνησο και στο Τρίκερι. Θα δεθεί με μια συγκρατούμενή της με τρόπο που δεν περίμενε ποτέ να το κάνει και θα βρεθεί στη δύσκολη θέση να προδώσει τα πιστεύω της ή να καταδικάσει σε θάνατο μια αθώα ζωή.

Όλη ιστορία της χώρας από το 1930 μέχρι τη μεταπολίτευση κυλάει μέσα από τις σελίδες του βιβλίου, δίνοντας και τις δύο πλευρές του ίδιου νομίσματος, μέσα από τις φωνές των ηρώων του. Η δυσκολία του να κρατηθεί κανείς πιστός στις ιδέες του, η δυσκολία του να εκφραστεί κανείς ελεύθερα, μη γνωρίζοντας το ποιόν του διπλανού ή του συνομιλητή του, η στέρηση κάθε ελευθερίας και αυτονομίας είναι έννοιες άγνωστες σε όποιον δεν τις έχει ζήσει. Όσο και να προσπαθεί κάποιος να καταλάβει τι μπορεί να σημαίνουν όλα αυτά δεν θα φτάσει ποτέ τόσο κοντά, όσο κάποιος που τα έχει ζήσει. Γι’ αυτό είναι και τόσο εύκολο για τη νέα γενιά να απορρίπτει ή να μην αντιλαμβάνεται πολλές φορές το μέγεθος τέτοιων καταστάσεων.

Η Χίσλοπ δημιουργεί ένα χαρακτήρα που καταφέρνει να αποδώσει τα μέγιστα σε όλες αυτές τις έννοιες αλλά και στον προβληματισμό για την ορθότητα των πράξεών της. Η Θέμις είναι μια δυναμική γυναίκα όσο έχει να σκεφτεί τον εαυτό της και μόνο, γίνεται όμως πιο συνετή όταν οι αποφάσεις της πρόκειται να επηρεάσουν και άλλους ανθρώπους, ιδιαίτερα όσους αγαπάει. Πέρα όμως από τους χαρακτήρες της που ενσαρκώνουν το διχασμό μιας χώρας ολόκληρης, έχει κάνει και απίστευτη έρευνα τόσο στην ιστορία της χώρας όσο και σε αρχεία, στους τόπους εξορίας και στον πολιτισμό μιας χώρας που δεν είναι η δική της.

Οι εκδόσεις Ψυχογιός ίσως να και να έκαναν τη μεγαλύτερη συγγραφική μεταγραφή της χρονιάς αφού η αγαπημένη εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων αναγνωστών, Victoria Hislop, έπειτα από πολλά χρόνια στις εκδόσεις Διόπτρα, άλλαξε εκδοτική στέγη. Κάπως έτσι, το τελευταίο της μυθιστόρημα με τίτλο "Όσοι αγαπιούνται", ένα ακόμα βιβλίο η ιστορία του οποίου διαδραματίζεται στην Ελλάδα μιας άλλης εποχής, έφτασε στα χέρια μας και μπορώ να πω πως μετά "Το νησί" της ίδιας, πρώτη φορά ένιωσα να συγκινούμαι τόσο βαθιά και ειλικρινά με κάποιο έργο της. Γιατί το βιβλίο αυτό συνδυάζει με ταξιδιάρικο και νοσταλγικό τρόπο κομμάτια της σύγχρονης Ιστορίας του τόπου μας, μα και ανθρώπινες ιστορίες που διαδραματίστηκαν μέσα σε αυτά, τις οποίες θα μπορούσε να έχει ζήσει ο καθένας μας.

Η αφήγηση ξεκινάει στην Αθήνα του 2016, όπου η ηλικιωμένη Θέμις βρίσκεται περικυκλωμένη από τα μέλη της οικογένειάς της, με αφορμή ένα πάρτι γενεθλίων. Μόνο που κανείς δεν γνωρίζει πως η Θέμις σκοπεύει να τους κάνει ένα τελευταίο δώρο. Ένα δώρο που τους αφορά όλους τους και που δεν είναι άλλο από το να τους αφηγηθεί την ιστορία της ζωής της, που κατά κάποιον τρόπο αποτελεί κομμάτι και της δικής τους ζωής. Κάπως έτσι, μεταφερόμαστε στη δεκαετία του '30, όπου η Θέμις μεγαλώνει μέσα σε μια οικογένεια γεμάτη συγκρούσεις που δεν έχουν να κάνουν μόνο με προσωπικά ζητήματα, όσο τα χρόνια προχωράνε, αλλά και με τις πολιτικές πεποιθήσεις που καλλιεργεί ο καθένας από τα μέλη αυτής. Τα δύσκολα χρόνια της Κατοχής βρίσκουν την έφηβη Θέμις αγανακτισμένη από την απώλεια των αγαπημένων της προσώπων, και κάπως έτσι παίρνει την απόφαση να ενταχθεί στην Αντίσταση δίνοντας τον δικό της αγώνα.

Και τα χρόνια περνάνε και φτάνει η ώρα της Απελευθέρωσης, για να ξεκινήσει μετά ο Εμφύλιος, ένας πόλεμος που έμελλε ν' αφήσει στην Ελλάδα βαθιές πληγές. Τότε είναι που η Θέμις θα ενταχθεί στον Δημοκρατικό Στρατό και μέσα απ' αυτόν θα γνωρίσει για πρώτη φορά τον έρωτα, ενώ θα έρθει και αντιμέτωπη με τον παραλογισμό ενός πολέμου που αδερφός σκοτώνει αδερφό χωρίς τύψεις κι ενοχές, κυριευμένος από ένα μίσος άρρωστο κι ανεξέλεγκτο. Κάπως έτσι, η Θέμις, συλλαμβάνεται και εξορίζεται, με την ίδια να δέχεται μια βία που δεν έχει προηγούμενο, ψάχνοντας από κάπου να κρατηθεί προκειμένου να μην χάσει το μυαλό και τη συνείδησή της. Μέχρι που φτάνει να πρέπει ν' αποφασίσει αν έχουν μεγαλύτερη σημασία τα ιδανικά και οι αξίες της από την ίδια της τη ζωή. Μια απόφαση που μπορεί να την κάνει να ανασάνει ελεύθερα και την ίδια ώρα να την φορτώσει με ένα βάρος που θα το φέρει σε όλη την υπόλοιπη ζωή της.

Η Hislop έχει αποδείξει πολλάκις πως όταν αποφασίσει να καταγράψει μια ιστορική περίοδο, άσχετα απ' το ότι την "παντρεύει" με την μυθοπλασία, αφοσιώνεται ολοκληρωτικά στην έρευνα γύρω από αυτήν, έτσι ώστε σε ό,τι αφορά τα πραγματικά γεγονότα να είσαι όσο το δυνατόν πιο ακριβής γίνεται. Αυτό ακριβώς έχει κάνει και στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, ξεδιπλώνοντας μέσα από την πορεία της ζωής της Θέμις σχεδόν όλη την Ιστορία της σύγχρονης Ελλάδας, από τα χρόνια της Κατοχής μέχρι και το σήμερα. Χρόνια που σημάδεψαν βαθιά της χώρα μας, που κατέστρεψαν ολόκληρες οικογένειες, που ισοπέδωσαν ψυχές και συνειδήσεις, που απέδειξαν πως όταν είμαστε όλοι μαζί μπορούμε να πετύχουμε τα πάντα, αλλά πως την αμέσως επόμενη στιγμή είμαστε ικανοί για το χειρότερο, ξεχνώντας τι πάει να πει ενότητα, επιτρέποντας στον ατομικισμό και στα δήθεν ιδανικά μας να μας μεταμορφώσουν στα χειρότερα τέρατα.

Η παραστατικότητα με την οποία καταγράφει ορισμένα γεγονότα η συγγραφέας, είναι τόσο συγκλονιστικά ωμή και σκληρή που μας κάνει να διαβάζουμε, εκείνες τις στιγμές, λίγο πιο αργά, ενώ νιώθουμε έναν κόμπο να ανεβαίνει και να φράζει τον λαιμό μας. Κι ενώ ίσως θα έπρεπε να μας ενοχλεί αυτή η αφηγηματική ωμότητα, συμβαίνει το ακριβώς αντίθετο, όχι μόνο γιατί γνωρίζουμε πως πρόκειται για την πάσα αλήθεια, αλλά γιατί εκεί που πρέπει να αναδειχθεί ο ρεαλισμός και η αλήθεια, δεν χωράνε ωραιοποιήσεις. Κανείς δεν επικροτεί τη βία, όμως αυτή είναι που υπέγραψε πολλά απ' τα γεγονότα της ζωής, όχι μόνο της Θέμιδας, αλλά χιλιάδων ανθρώπων στα δύσκολα εκείνα χρόνια της Κατοχής και του Εμφυλίου, χρόνια γεμάτα αποφάσεις με συνέπειες που στιγμάτισαν ανθρώπους για χρόνια ολάκερα, και που ακόμα κι αν βρήκαν τρόπο να επιβιώσουν και να συνεχίσουν τις ζωές τους, ποτέ δεν ξέχασαν, όχι μόνο γιατί δεν μπορούσαν, αλλά γιατί κατά βάθος δεν ήθελαν και να το κάνουν.

Πέραν, όμως, του ιστορικού σκέλους της αφήγησης, υπάρχει και ο καθαρά ανθρώπινος παράγοντας τον οποίο, η συγγραφέας, πάντα χειρίζεται με περίσσια ευαισθησία και τρυφερότητα, αλλά όχι πάντα με την αντικειμενικότητα που θα έπρεπε (βλέπε π.χ. την περίπτωση της "Ανατολής). Ευτυχώς, στο "Όσοι αγαπιούνται", όχι μόνο τα καταφέρνει, αλλά το κάνει με τρόπο περίφημο, δημιουργώντας και αναπτύσσοντας χαρακτήρες με άκρως ολοκληρωμένα και σωστά δομημένα ψυχογραφήματα, με αυτό της Θέμιδας να ξεχωρίζει έναντι των άλλων, όχι μόνο γιατί είναι η κεντρική μας πρωταγωνίστρια, αλλά γιατί μέσα από τα μάτια της γινόμαστε μάρτυρες των μεγαλύτερων αληθειών της ζωής, αλλά και της Ιστορίας του τόπου μας, που όσο μεγαλειώδης κι αν υπήρξε, άλλες τόσες σκοτεινές περιόδους αντιμετώπισε και βίωσε. Συνοψίζοντας, λοιπόν, το "Όσοι αγαπιούνται" δεν είναι απλά ένα βιβλίο που σας συνιστώ να διαβάσετε, αλλά το οποίο πρέπει να διαβάσετε, αν όχι για την ιστορία του, για τις σκληρές αλήθειες και την τρυφερότητα συνάμα που αυτό κρύβει μέσα του.

Η Χίσλοπ , η ξένη συγγραφέας που γράφει για την Ελλάδα ,έτσι την χαρακτηρίζω γιατί πραγματικά υμνεί τη χώρα μας με το έργο τγς , επέστρεψε με ένα μυθιστόρημα που θα σας συγκινήσει . Το <<όσοι αγαπιούνται>> με τίτλο παρμένο από τον Επιτάφιο του Γ. Ρίτσο είναι ένα οδοιπορικό στα δύσκολα χρόνια της ιστορίας της νεότερης Ελλάδας . Όταν αποφασίζει να γράψει ιστορία ανάμεικτη με μυθοπλασία τα καταφέρνει εξαιρετικά και ταξιδεύει τον αναγνώστη καθηλωνοντας τον ,σε ένα ταξίδι στο χωροχρόνο .
Η κεντρική ηρωιδα είναι η Θεμις , η οποία μεγαλώνει σε μια πολυμελή οικογένεια στην οποία τα πολιτικά πιστεύω είναι στο κέντρο της καθημερινότητας τους . Μια οικογένεια που ταλανίζεται από έριδες σαν την πολύπαθη Ελλάδα και η Θεμις ακολουθεί τα αριστερά της φρονήματα . Στα βουνά θα πολεμήσει τους δεξιούς και θα βρεθεί και στην Μακρόνησο . Η ζωή της έχει πολλά απρόοπτα ,αμέτρητα γεγονότα και θα σας καθηλώσει . Δε θα σας καταθέσω περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες για την πλοκή απλά θα σας προϊδεάσω λέγοντας πως ξεκινάμε βλέποντας τη Θεμις μικρή και καταλήγουμε να την παρακολουθούμε στα γεράματα της .
Λοιπόν, το μυθιστόρημα διαβάζεται απνευστί . Αφηγείται την επική ιστορία μιας γυναίκας αγωνίστριας από μικρή ως μεγάλη σε διάφορες φάσεις της ,ακολουθώντας τα πολιτικά και κοινωνικά γεγονότα που συντάραξαν την Ελλάδα . Στην αρχή μου φάνηκε πως άργησε η συγγραφέας να μπει στη βασική πλοκή οπου η κεντρική ηρωιδα παίρνει απόφαση και ακολουθεί τους αριστερούς στα βουνά . Αν και καθυστέρησε να διεισδύσει στο βασικό κορμό της ιστορίας παρόλα αυτά δε με κούρασε και δε με ξένισε αυτό , γιατί πολύ απλά μετά η πλοκή τρέχει . Στο βιβλίο παρά πολλά ιστορικά γεγονότα καταγράφονται χωρίς να κουράζει η συγγραφέας με περιττες λεπτομέρειες . Ωστόσο ,διαφάνηκε ξεκάθαρα πως μελέτησε παρά πολύ αλλά και κράτησε ίσες αποστάσεις . Είναι αντικειμενική και μέσα από την ιστορία της κεντρικής ηρωίδας αλλά και των υπολοίπων προσώπων δίνει παραστατικά αλλά και αξιοκρατικά τα γεγονότα στον αναγνώστη .
Η Χίσλοπ για μια ακόμα φορά μου απέδειξε πως ξέρει να γράφει μυθοπλασία απόλυτα εναρμονισμένη με την ιστορία . Της πάει η ελληνική θεματολογια και φαίνεται . Για μια ακόμα φορά σκιαγράφησε άψογα όλους τους ήρωες , φώτισε τα μύχια της ψυχής τους , γιατί τους γνωρίσαμε σε διάφορες εκφάνσεις τους . Με όπλο της τη ρεαλιστική γραφή της με τις ωμές περιγραφές συγκινεί τον αναγνώστη και τον προβληματίζει . Αυτός ο αδελφοκτόνος εμφύλιος που δίχασε μια χώρα , οικογένειες και φίλους ζωντανεύει ολοζώντανα στις σελίδες αυτού του βιβλίου και σε ωθεί σε σκέψεις . Άραγε , αξίζει για τα ιδεώδη να απαρνείσαι το αιμα σου ; Δύσκολο ερώτηση με ακόμα πιο ζόρικη απάντηση .
Θα σας αφήσω να το σκεφτείτε διαβάζοντας το . Εμένα αυτό το βιβλίο με συγκίνησε . Άλλωστε , όσοι έφυγαν δε ξεχνιούνται γιατί κουβαλάμε μέσα μας , όσους αγαπάμε .

4.5 ⭐️ Those Who Are Loved is a powerful, compelling novel that immerses the reader in the life of Themis and her family, raised from early childhood by her matriarch grandmother. The novel steps back in time to Themis early childhood, living under Nazi occupation in Athens, but that is only the beginning of Themis story, and we follow her journey through adulthood, one where she will face many challenges, angry at her fellow Greeks who collaborated with the Nazis, she makes the life changing decision to fight alongside the communists during the civil war. This is a story of one ordinary woman who lived an extraordinary life.

Rather like real life Themis story is one of heartbreak, joy, regrets, and the moments in life that will haunt her until her dying day. I felt I was living and breathing Themis’s story, although I didn’t agree with some of her choices and actions, her story is an incredible one. It was interesting to see how a young timid Themis overshadowed by her older brothers and sisters grew into a feisty, resourceful and determined woman who showed great courage throughout her life. Although Themis story is fiction, it’s one built around true life events, I’m sure there are many Greeks who can relate to the atrocities Themis witnessed throughout her life. Victoria Hislop brings each character deftly to life, some like Themis will remain with you long after you reach the last page of this compelling novel.

Victoria Hislop sheds light on the complexity and trauma of Greece’s past, it’s obvious she has meticulously researched her subject, and thanks to her descriptive prose It’s easy to summon up images of a Greece that was once a country blighted by poverty and hardship, it’s people divided by politics. The author weaves an epic tale of family, adversary, and the difficulties faced by thousands of Greeks from 1941 onwards. This is definitely one for those who love historical fiction, or those who enjoy a rich in detail family sagas. Personally I found Those Who Are Loved a delightful and engrossing read. Highly recommended

On finishing Those Who Are Loved by Victoria Hislop my initial reaction was WOW! It felt like a history lesson brought vividly to life.

The book follows Themis's life in Athens from childhood right up to old age. And what a life she lived, full of political turmoil and family disharmony. Right from the very start I took to Themis, she exudes intelligence, courage, and passion and I loved how bravely she walked the walk as well as talked the talk for what she believed in.

I learnt so much about the history of Greece from 1930, through their occupation during World War 2, and the constant changing of the political powers which meant that you never know who you could trust. Themis believed firmly in communism, and following her journey and watching her adeptly survive and thrive in the Communist Army was eye opening. But then she was captured and paid a heavy price for chasing after her dream of building a better Greece.

With so much fighting and political upheaval, this book put me through the emotional wringer. I cared so much about Themis and her family, and they suffered and suffered, and the pain reached through the pages and hit me hard. It really made me reflect on what I would give up for my beliefs. And it also portrayed how conflicted Themis felt at times, by what she was doing, and why she was doing it.

While I did pick up a lot of history from this book, it was never in a boring way. It weaves the facts into this family saga. And that together with a main character who held me spellbound meant my attention never wavered. It felt like a rollercoaster that swung from emotional to scary and my heart was pounding with fear at times.

If you are looking for a character driven book with an AMAZING setting, and you enjoy historical fiction, well then don't miss out on this one. I have a strong feeling that it will be one of my favourite books of 2019.

Com uma capa que nos remete para uma leitura mais leve, rapidamente chegamos à conclusão que não.

Passada na Grécia, acompanhamos a vida de Themis, a mais nova de 4 irmãos, desde a sua meninice até à velhice.

Ao acompanhar esta família vai sendo relatada a história da Grécia a partir dos anos 30, passando pelo período da 2a Guerra Mundial, da ocupação Nazi, de um período de grande instabilidade política, do golpe de estado, da guerra civil...

Dentro da família de Themis há defensores de diferentes ideologias políticas, o que provoca constantes tensões entre os irmãos.

Foi a minha estreia com a autora e não desiludiu. Gostei bastante desta história crua e sofredora que mostrou a coragem e a luta desta família pelos ideais que defendiam.

Uma história bem escrita que me emocionou em vários momentos e que recomendo. Uma boa forma de conhecer o passado atribulado deste país.

A very difficult book to rate. On the one hand this is an extremely well researched and thought-provoking story about the troubles in Athens during and after the Second World War. It is both interesting and heart-breaking. On the other hand it’s quite heavy going in places, lots of political detail which for me, detracted from the human story.

Βλέπω τις υπόλοιπες κριτικές για το βιβλίο και πραγματικά δεν καταλαβαίνω γιατί πολλοί χαρακτηρίζουν την πλοκή επίπεδη και χωρίς οπτική. Η Βικτόρια Χίσλοπ επανέρχεται στον τομέα της, το ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα. Εγκιβωτισμένη αφήγηση μέσα από τις διηγήσεις της γιαγιάς πλέον Θέμιδος. Ξετυλίγεται ολόκληρη η αιματηρή ιστορία της σύγχρονης Ελλάδος. Από τα χρόνια της Κατοχής, μέχρι τον Εμφύλιο, την εξορία στο Τρίκερι και τη Μακρόνησο, τα γεγονότα του Πολυτεχνείου, τον μεγάλο σεισμό του '99... Το βιβλίο περικλείει άρτια την έκρυθμη πολιτική κατάσταση ανά τα χρόνια, την πείνα και τη δυστυχία του κόσμου, τα βασανιστήρια και τον φόβο όπου πολλές ανθρώπινες ιστορίες μπλέκονται μαζί σε έναν κυκεώνα γεγονότων, δημιουργώντας ιδιαίτερη πλοκή. Πολύ σημαντικό να προστεθεί εδώ ότι η συγγραφέας παραθέτει τα γεγονότα φουλ αντικειμενικά και δεν τίθεται υπέρ ή κατά με καμία πλευρά. Η γραφή δεν είναι επίπεδη, μα παραστατική, άρτια λογοτεχνική και ευκολοδιάβαστη. Για ένα βιβλίο τέτοιου όγκου μεγάλο συν να γυρνάς ασταμάτητα τη μια σελίδα μετά την άλλη μέχρι να φτάσεις στο σύγχρονο παρόν και να αναζητήσεις τη λύτρωση. Πολύ συγκινητικό και αξίζει να διαβαστεί από όλους όσοι επιθυμούν να μάθουν μέσω ενός εξαιρετικού ιστορικού μυθιστορήματος γεγονότα που έχουν επηρεάσει/διαμορφώσει τις ίδιες τους τις ρίζες.

Sadly disappointed with the style and standard of writing in this book. I have read nearly all of the books that Victoria Hislop has written, primarily on the basis of how well I felt two of her earlier books, The Island and The Return, were written. I was really hoping that, in this book, she had returned to those former days of glory. Sadly, it was not to be. I do appreciate the amount of work that must have gone into researching for this book and I really appreciated the information about the modern political history of Greece. I just wish it had been better written!

This was a very interesting and well researched book. I learned a lot about Greek history between 1930 and the 1980s which was very interesting. We are following Themis a woman who is about 5 when the book starts in 1930 and her family: her siblings Thanasis, Panos and Margarita as well as her parents and her grandmother. They have widely diverging political views and their daily debates were interesting. The characters could have been better fleshed out but it was ok (I've read way worse). The main themes of the book are: loyalty to family vs the country, the place of politics in family life, what makes a "hero". I think that the book could have been longer since we cover SO many years. I didn't like that the book starts and end in 2016 because it spoils quite a lot: we learn in the prologue that Themis survives everything, that she marries and the name of said husband, that she has children and still lives in Greece among other things. This removed a lot of the tension. At the end of the book I was wondering one thing she resisted occupation during WWII and was a soldier in the ensuing civil war but then quickly becomes kind of apolitical to the point that her children and grand-children are shocked to learn, very late in the game, that she was a civil war heroine (as they say). But she was actively engaged in political activity for a very short portion of her overall life and didn't really achieve much in that role. After all the ordeal she went through she became an apolitical housewife so I'm not convinced the title fit. Not sure this whole rambling makes sense . I really had fun and it's a nice way to learn more about the recent history of this country. I just wish it was longer, maybe a series of books instead of a standalone?

I much preferred The Return, The Island and The Sunrise.

The constant bickering and arguing of the 4 siblings annoyed me so much in the end. And for this reason I couldn't grow fond of any of them.

And being a modern day human being, I found it very difficult to comprehend how the prisoners could be beaten and treated so appalling (as well as being raped) but refused to sign away their beliefs so that they could return home to their families.

Συγκλονιστικο μυθιστορημα..Πολυ συγκινητικο να βλεπεις ποσο αγαπαει την Ελλαδα η συγγραφεας..ποσο εχει μελετησει την ιστορια και τα δεινα των Ελληνων..μεσα απο την ιστορια και τους ηρωες που εχει πλασει για τις αναγκες της ιστοριες της, βλεπεις ολοκαθαρα την ιστορια και τα βιωματα των Ελληνων..Με συγκινησε παρα πολυ!
