4.5/5

I’ll start off by saying if you haven’t discovered the “Tales of Horizon” series by David Sarachman yet, you really should get on it. I’ve had the chance to read the latest instillation, “Druid: A Tale of the Last City”, book three in the series. The story follows the continuing adventures of Kel Lothless, a sorcerer in Horizon. In this book, Kel decides to see what is beyond Horizon, and encounters questions he never thought to ask. I don’t want to give you too many details, as I don’t want to spoil the previous two books, but if you have read the prior two books, this story picks up right where book two ends off.

Like the previous stories, this one is a rollicking good time. It has everything I look for in a good book - it’s an easy quick read, full of humour and adventure, and entertaining in its presentation. The characters are funny, relatable, and definitely people you want to go have a drink with. If you have read the previous two books, you can expect more of the same in this one. Except with more snorting Sleeks.

One thing this book did do that the previous two didn’t was hit me with a shocking twist. I’ve been reading books for some time and there are very few (like maybe one or two come to mind) that shocked me the way this one did. Not only did it it shock me, I had a physical reaction to the twist. Everything in the previous two books are thrown in disarray, and now I need to re-read those. Which I will.

Considering this is a book I’ve been waiting to read since I’m thoroughly enjoying the series, I do have a bit of an issue with the ending. You see, it just … ends. We’re just getting prepared for the Final Battle when suddenly Kel finds himself in trouble and we’re left with a cliff hanger. I struggle with this because in all reality it is likely the author did this on purpose, in order for the next book to make sense (and he’s definitely not the first author to do this, either -- side eye at George RR Martin). But I find this frustrating since now we are left waiting with an abrupt stop rather than in a part of the story that would have a natural pause. The ending is the only reason why this is not a full five star review from me.

Don’t let this stop you, however. In fact, now that you are prepared for this ending, you can read it in full enjoyment and not worry about the sadness you will feel when it’s over. Well maybe a bit of sadness. But like me, you’ll probably pick up book one again and re-read what you clearly missed.
