This is the tenth book of 12, in a long series of steampunk adventure books. Set in a magical fantasy version of the Victorian era, the Clockwork Twist series follows an unassuming and introverted clockmaker from London, named Twist. When a clockwork princess needs his help, Twist find himself on an adventures around the world surrounded by airship pirates, secret societies, treasure hunters, vampires, dragons, magical kitsune, and even a genie or two. Are you all caught up?Jonas warned Twist that he would meet his father someday, and that day has finally arrived. Meeting the man, however, was only the first surprise. Now Twist might have a chance to bring his mother back to life, as well.Twist grew up thinking that he was a forgotten and abandoned orphan. If his parents had wanted him, surely they would have kept him. Twist told himself that they both must be long dead, to save himself from farther pain. That, however, was all an illusion specially designed to protect him from evil fairies that wanted his ruin. His mother gave her life to protect Twist, and his father hid him away only because he had no other choice. When Twist's fate catches up to him unexpectedly, he finds himself face to face with the father who abandoned him, and to Twist's shock he finds nothing but remorse in the other man. More than simply wishing that things had been different, that he could have kept and raised Twist himself, Twist's father tells him that he's been working for years to build a time machine with the express intent to bring Twist's mother back from death.Dabbling in the fabric of time, however, is not very straight forward. In preparation to reach into the past and steal Twist's mother away to the present, he accidentally brings an unknown man from the far away future of 1946, into the streets of present day London. Now Twist and his friends have to travel to his father's hidden time machine to set things right.
This, the 10th book in the steampunk fantasy series must be the biggest adventure Twist has embarked on so far, and boy has he had many of these! Jonas, his dear friend had told him that he would one day meet his father, he had seen this in his far reaching sight, but Twist had not taken much note of this as he considered himself a nameless orphan. However whilst walking down the London streets late one evening he did meet his father, and though the meeting was full of turbulence, he got to know that his father was Spanish and that he was a scientist who had built a time machine in order to bring his mother back from the dead. Jonas, Myra and Twist go with Miguel who tells them he has to bring a pocket watch from the future, the same pocket watch which had long protected Twist from the fae's sight. In doing so though he also brings it's current owner from the future, an American guy called Robin who is bewildered to find himself in Victorian London. They all stay together with Miguel promising he would send Robin back to his own time and home after he brings back Twist's mother. Obviously Twist is nervous about meeting his mother, hardly believing this would happen. Both Jonas and Twist believe they are not worthy of love so this book is a real heart wrencher, but it is so satisfying seeing Twist finally meet his family. I just loved this book, Naomi, his mother, a gypsy witch is so adorable, I hope we now get to see more of her in the last two books in this amazing series!
I was a little disappointed with this one. After all the action and tenseness of previous adventures, I found the doing of this particular very underwhelming. And it shouldn't of been considering what Twist goes through here. A lot of it just felt like filler, them having lunch and chatting while they travel. The object of the mission didn't have any real intensity at all. In saying that, I still enjoyed it and look forward to seeing how it all wraps up.
I love this series, there's no end to fascinating characters and scenarios. Bits of magic and sometimes mayhem that weaves a story that you don't want to put down. This one has a time traveler which adds a new element and I'm also a fan of that genre too so it was a bonus for me. Off to read the next book! Thanks Emily Thompson for the fantastic adventure!
I continue to be astounded and amazed with the very believable characters in this series! The author makes you feel that you are there and a part of the story. And how does something like “time” play a major role in this part of the series? I never do spoilers when I complete a review. Just know that the entire series is well worth your time!
This story of Twist father making a time machine to try and get his mother before she was killed by fairies. It’s rather sad that I really enjoy stories with stupid fairies. First True Blood and now this series.
In this story Twist finally meets his father. His father has been working on a time machine. It seems to be working. Fantastic things happen and the end of the story is a tear jerker.
Since I've read all 12 books in this series and enjoyed them, all I can add to my reviews of the the rest of the series is - remember it's total fantasy, and they must be read in order!
