2132: Awakening

Rate this book
One man. One dark room. One ominous voice. Zero clue how he ended up there or why. Nothing makes sense. Nothing seems familiar. No one is there to save him. As questions are spewed at him, glimpses of what happened before appear, but what do they mean? What difference will the answers make? The Voice wants answers. The man needs answers. What he discovers about himself and the world around him may destroy him. Where will he go from here? Paul Davis’s 2132: Awakening is part of The Voice, a collection of two stories of the not too distant future. Each piece can be read in a single thought-provoking sitting.

This scifi, virus caused, apocalyptic story hits pretty close to home right now. Just one mistake, or series or mistakes, cause unparalleled destruction of the human population and other creatures. This book was published in November 2019, so keep that in mind as I summarize the story.

The story opens with our main character imprisoned in a room alone. We don't know his name, and never really find out his name. His only companion is The Voice. Meals are delivered, clothes are washed, and his toilet facilities are cleaned while he sleeps, so he has no human contact. After he awakens, The Voice asks him questions about what he remembers about H3713. He slowly starts to recall the events following the 2021 H1N1 flu outbreak, and the new virus that developed 5 years later. He and his wife are both immunologists and he is also a microbiologist. His wife goes to work for the CDC first, for another man he despises. He is later asked to come work with them once the virus begins to spread. He has a suspicious mind and worries that his wife is having an affair. This hubris, on both his and Dr. Adamson's part, leads to disastrous consequences. He is isolated when he arrives, which causes him more angst with his wife. When he is finally allowed to work with actual samples, there is a problem, one that he should have disclosed, but didn't. Since this is a human apocalypse, things get worse. In the end, he finds out his own isolation, with only The Voice as his companion, was his own idea. He has awoken from his cryogenic sleep and hopes that whatever plan he put in place allows him to atone for his mistakes.

This was not a very long story, but it kept me engaged until the end. I won't give away more details, but just the thought that something like this could happen, in light of Covid which swept the globe just a few short months after this was published, if terrifying.
There is a follow up called 2132: Transformation that I am beginning next. The next book was published in May 2020, so the author had some real world information to work from.

This was a really good read. At first I didn't know whether I'd like the writing style or not but after the first chapter, I found it easy to read.

The pacing was just right. I liked how the MMC woke up and could barely remember anything. It meant that the reader learnt what had actually happened at the same time as he did.

The world building was good and I liked the sense of foreboding and regret. It was interesting to learn how the virus mutated and why.

I am curious about what happened to everyone on the planet, if there were any other survivors and what happened to the MMC after he left his room and went outside.

I'll definitely be reading the next book.

A short but very interesting reading and most unfortunately, in my opinion, although this is a work of fiction it may become true in the future. Human kind has been devastated by a virus and nobody knows how many were left in the planet. Only one guy is able to reconnect previously research established centers and therefore discover how many people were left, but will The Voice allow it? We haven't still discovered that in this book, may be in the next, which I'm looking forward to read.
I downloaded a free copy of this book from Bookfunnel and this is my honest review

Imagine awakening to a sterile room with no one around and no memory, only a voice that doesn't seem inclined to give you any answers and raises more questions.
Snippets of information are given to jog your memory, but your brain is working too slowly to put it all together. What has happened to you, to humanity?

In 2132:Awakening, Paul Davis does an amazing job of unraveling the chilling backstory to one man's life given a piece at a time and keeping you hanging on his every word. This thought provoking short story is well worth the read.

I think I was as confused as the main character ar the start of this short story. He believes that he has initiated the end of the human race. There is an AI in the building directing his next actions. The remaining of the story is comprised of steps he takes to save the human race. The AI appears to be in command, but the human is unaware of this state of affairs.

I think I would like to read the novel that follows.
