The Italian Bachelors #2

Accidentally Enemies

Rate this book
She didn’t mean to knock him into that canal…

Megan knows better than to make decisions based on passion, but even she can’t resist a summer internship in Venice. The handsome tenor she knocked into the canal should be easier to resist since he’s still mad at her.

Should be easier.

Lorenzo lives for his dreams, even if sometimes that means doing odd jobs to pay the bills. He has no patience for anyone who doesn’t live with the same level of devotion to their art. So why can’t he ignore Megan?

She swore she’d never date a musician.

He has no desire to date an American.

When the person you’re stuck with is attractive, talented, and infuriating, something has to give… and in this case, it might be both their hearts.

Love Victorious in Venice
By Shanna Delaney

Apologies for the LONG review!!!

I grew up on classical music as a child long before I was introduced to pop music when I was 12. Which is probably why I have never been terribly enthused about the rock music of the 1980s and 90s. I grew up listening to classical music, orchestras and choral music, all of which regularly speaks to my heart and moves me to tears.

This romance was all about music and was also set in my all time favourite Italian city - Venice.

Megan is a Cello player from the USA and while she loves performing, she refuses to give it all the passion she has, because she doesn't want to be sucked into the life of a musician who is never at home. That is why she majored in Music Education and NOT Music Performance.

Megan grew up with a father was often sad because he never got to live his dream. He had been forced to give up his music in order to settle down and raise his family. He had been told over and over again that to be a musician was being selfish. Most (male) musicians are on the road, doing concert tours and having to leave their wives and families back at home. That was very selfish.

I do agree that is the way American Musicans and Music Bands do seem to work. The artist may prefer to make studio albums, but they do eventually have to go on tour in order to be seen and heard. Consequently, Megan has learnt to not put so much passion into her music, because being passionate about music, makes you sad and want things that you can't have.

Now that we have youtube, I have seen some young performers snd entertainers, do tour shows only on the weekends so that they can still attend school during the week.

In Europe, things seem to be different. Possibly because Europe is smaller and more compact and it does not take as long to get back home on a regular basis during a concert tour.

Lorenzo is a classical Singer. He was trained to sing opera and that is all he really knows. He refuses to sing the popular songs, including the big hit songs from musicals. He also refuses to leave Venice, the city where he was born and raised. His dream is to sing opera at La Fenice, THE biggest and most famous opera theatre in Venice. But so far he has not been able to secure an audition at La Fenice. Instead he works for a business that runs a chamber music group and he sings "Selections" from different operas.

Megan has entered herself into a new Reality Game show Called Vivaldi's Game, this TV show will be centred around music. Most other reality shows are about cooking, art or travel. This one is about music.

Some of the challenges that Megan has to do include, walking around Venice like she was a tourist, with a camera person trailing behind and filming her. She has to do some busking for one day and earn as much money as possible, and lastly she has to write a music composition that will become a music video.

Lorenzo has also been hired for this reality game show as the assistant of the Producer, whose name is Tom.

Lorenzo is sent to San Marco Square to pick up the last contestant who will have a cello instrument with her. By this time, Megan is right down by the Grand Canal and when Lorenzo asks her name, she whips around with the cello on her back and knocks him into the Grand Canal. Not the best first impression to make!!

Lorenzo is assigned to Megan as her "camera person" and over the next 3 weeks, he films her as she plays her music perfectly but with no soul, no passion, and this makes Lorenzo very frustrated. They both struggle to keep their ideals in place while the music of Venice slowly works on them to let go and let the music become their passion. (The music of the night - Phantom of the Opera)

The other competitors are using violins, violas and flutes and these are much easier instruments to pay when it comes to busking. They earn lots of money. Megan and Chris, the other Cellist in this competition, do not. So Tom plans to give them an extra chance. For Megan he arranges a romantic date, with Lorenzo's womanizer friend, Stefano. Stefano always has a love them and leave them attitude, but Megan does not. So when Lorenzo finds out about this date, he knows how Stefano works and races to the red bridge where he knows Stefano will kiss her and try and seduce his girl. Because by this time, Lorenzo has fallen in love with Megan. When he arrives at the bridge he knocks Stefano into the canal and kisses Megan for the first time. The entire date has been filmed, including Lorenzo's arrival, knocking Stefano into the canal and kissing Megan. That last part of the video goes viral online.

After the date, Megan shuts down again, and her music composition is played with perfection, but no passion. She is running scared now. She is scared of the passion she feels around Lorenzo. Up until now, Lorenzo has been singing to the audience. He has not been trying to play on or to their emotions.

Then comes one last orchestral performance. Megan is playing Cello, and Lorenzo is singing. This was be the last performance for the game show before the winner is announced. So tonight, they both choose to let their passions loose and play the best they can be. That chapter was the best one written in the entire story, and I was in tears at the end of it!!!

Since Lorenzo is not actually competing, naturally he does not win. For Megan, it was too little, too late. She does not win. The winner turns out to be a "floozie" who actually seduced the producer and was announced the winner, probably after doing a lap dance for Tom in his office, with the door closed.

But this does not mean that Lorenzo and Megan go home empty handed. They both end up with job offers that mean they both get to stay in Venice!!! They eventually get married and have a baby boy.

The only down side I will say about this book, is that there was not enough of Venice in this story. I really wanted to see more of Venice. I loved what I saw of Megans trips to Murano and Burano. Those were gorgeous and very well written. But Megan never went to La Fenice, although she did attend some of Lorenzo's regular performances. She did not take a vaporetto ride along the entire Grande Canal, (from the train station to San Marco) and she never visited the Rialto Bridge.

I want to give this story 4.5 stars, but I will have to settle for 4 stars instead.

Megan and Lorenzo

Venice what's not to love?! Megan has come with "Penelope" her Cello to compete on Vivaldi’s Game with a year-long contract. She realizes she doesn't know where to go when she gets there so she calls Tom, her professor’s old colleague, who is sponsoring the contest and he tells her where to go and he will send someone to get her. The next thing she knows someone calls her name while she is standing close to the canal and when she turns, the person falls in the canal! Will he except her apology? Lorenzo is vivid! He knows what's in the canal! He won't talk to her the whole way to his apartment so he can clean up as quickly as possible! Then the next day he is assigned to be her cameraman and has to follow her, why is Tom torturing him? Thankfully he wasn't assigned to Nicole! Ada wouldn't have been to bad, but, Megan? Will Lorenzo ever forgive and forget what was an accident? Will he help Megan so she can win? Will Nichole win and gloat about it? Will Ada find happiness while doing what she loves? Read this great story by Shanna Delaney to find out! You wont be disappointed 👍

A Sweet Romantic Adventure

I didn't like this story as much as the first one in the series. That was mostly due to the inner monologue-ing of the heroine. Also, while I understood the impact of her father's choice on her, as well as the influence her parents had on her during her growing years, I can't imagine music without feelings, especially for someone who majors in it at college. It's hard work and for someone to choose to tackle that without allowing a passion for it baffled me.
Still, it was beautiful watching these characters grow throughout the story. Their slow but steady progress from misunderstanding to tentative truce, to friendship, to love was well-done. Again, I enjoyed slipping right into Venice and walking in the characters shoes as they explored.
Overall, the book was good, with few typos. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a sweet, clean, romantic adventure.

Warning, reading this series could be expensive

First, Florence, now Venice. Thanks to Shanna and her exquisite descriptions of these places, I now NEED to go to Italy! These are the first romance novels I wanted to slow down and savor instead of racing to the end. Each sentence is beautiful and evokes the sights, sounds, smells, and even emotions of Venice. The romance is sweet and tender and delightful. This book series has all the things you dream of in a romantic Italian vacation. Read them!!!

Accidentlally Enemies

A very interesting story. Despite getting off to a very bad meeting, they are constantly thrown together. She doesn't want to fall for a musician or let her music become too important in her life. Being able,to sing his opera and staying in Vienna are his priorities. Somehow, along the way, everything changes when they realize what is really important. I gave this book 5 stars.

A touching and moving romance

A friendship that takes awhile to take off due to a bad first meeting and lots of assumed ideas.

A really sweet romance, not only of finding a love that changes they way you look at life but also of their love of another kind. She is an aspiring Cellist and he is a singer of the Opera.

A little slow in places but worth the effort. And loved the ending

I was delightfully surprised to find this novel more than a fun romance. The depth of the Lorenzo and Megan struggles and their road together to become something greater was a marvel to read. Shanna created a story with such depth that you will see musicians quite differently as well as your own outlook on life. And of course, plan your next trip to Venice.

Singer and Cellist

Although the middle section got a little long, overall a sweet read. There was some in the middle that should have been cut and those times added to the end where a huge gap of time passed.

Recap- while competing for a show, a cellist meets an opera singer in Italy. As they navigate the shows rules and the city together, they form a relationship.

[ORIGINALLY TITLED "LOVE VICTORIOUS IN VENICE" NOW RETITLED AS "ACCIDENTALLY ENEMIES"]

(5 stars) - this excellent series just keeps getting better!

I loved the 1st book in this series, and so I had high hopes for this 2nd one - and it still managed to exceed those expectations.

The stories in this series are so refreshingly original. This one is an enemies-to-lovers trope like the 1st - one of the most difficult tropes to pull off - and the author again succeeds in having the hero go believably from obnoxious jerk to swoonily desirable.

At the same time, the plot is more than different enough from the 1st to not feel at all like the author is using a template or formula.

The main characters undergo difficulties & conflict, but handle it like real people. There was one quibble - I had a hard time believing that Megan would believe Nicole on anything, given Megan & Ada's attitudes toward Nicole up to that point, not to mention Nicole's track record. But a person being derailed by fear & insecurity under the stress of performing would be plausible under the circumstances, & I think that emphasis would have worked better.

The happily-ever-after was so full of warm fuzziness that I'm still feeling it even now. Soo looking forward to book 3!

This book will make you want to go to Venice and visit the sights, the people, hear the music and the language of passionate people like the characters in this book. Their passion and true love comes out in the end and cannot be denied any longer.

It was interesting to have a television reality show centered around people and instruments they play in an orchestra with the chance to win a year's contract. The main characters and secondary characters were wonderful in how the story was woven around them, the city and the music they were so passionate about. There were even characters that provided the reader with angst and the characters. with grief as you wanted to dislike them.

I really enjoyed the tension and banter between Lorenzo and Megan. They both seemed to rub each other the wrong way yet you could feel the chemistry between them that they were both trying to deny. I also enjoyed how they eventually were able to break down walls and bring out the best in each other if only for a short time.

It is funny how if we truly listen with out heart we cannot deny what really holds our passion and touches our soul. Thank goodness Megan and Lorenzo listened. I loved the epilogue. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

I didn’t like Lorenzo at first. He was rude and ungentlemanly to Megan after she accidentally knocked him into the water. He’s not happy with his job as Tom’s assistance and takes out on her. He was rigid about his singing, but Megan and the singing gondolier Raffaele help him see other possibilities without compromising his ideals. Megan seems to play it safe with a degree in music education and playing her cello with precision, but not passion. I was surprised she would take a risk by going on a reality show competition in a foreign country. I was glad that despite the fact that the show pushed for more drama to increase the viewers and ratings Megan refused to compromise her integrity. I loved reading about the parts of Venice that are not just tourist destinations like the theater that was converted into a grocery store. It was great to read how the natives lived and more about the history and culture.

Truly a delightful read that had me sitting in Venice watching all of this story unfold before me. The author has done such a good job of bringing the reader into the story with her passion and descriptions, but not in a tedious over descriptive manner. Megan is holding so much inside that you can almost feel it ready to burst out. A beautiful love story with just enough "greed and jealously" from select people to keep it flowing to a beautiful conclusion. My first, but hopefully not my last, book by this author.
I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review.

Megan loves her chello but refuses to feel music or emotions. She’s afraid she’ll loose herself. Megan is encouraged by her professor to go to Venice to compete in a reality show about classical music.

Lorenzo sings at the theater that is sponsoring the competition and works part time for the shows director. He loves opera and Venice to the point he disdains any other music and the thought of living anywhere else.

Megan is teamed with Lorenzo and immediately there is friction and animosity. What will become of this team and the competition.

The characters were well drawn and the story pacing was good. I love all the little glimpses for Venice––enough to visualize the setting but not so much as to get bogged down with descriptions.

So glad the author realizes that putting art in front of the masses "who don't have a clue how to appreciate it" gives them the opportunity to learn to appreciate it :)
I know what I like, and after watching certain televised contests, I know why I like them. (I love the commentators and judges that teach and explain instead of just doling out a score).

I loved this story of Megan and Lorenzo. I couldn't put it down, stayed up late .i found it very interesting from Megan's hours of practicing and then when she let the music flow from her heart, that's when the story came alive.

Well worth the read, I was anArc reader and got a free book from Shanna in advance.
I look forward to her next book.

Sweet romance

Such an amazingly descriptive story. Shanna is great with all the little details of the people and places you truly can visualize yourself in Venice. Even the musical descriptions allow you to “hear” the love songs. Expertly done, a great read. Can’t wait for her next release.
