Gevleugelde Duisternis
In een post-apocalyptische wereld die tot de grond toe is afgebrand, lijkt het wakker maken van vuurspuwende draken op zijn zachtst gezegd een slecht idee.
Toch is dat precies wat Yorick Novak, een mysterieuze jongeman, van plan is. Met de hulp van een aantal excentrieke reisgenoten is Yorick onderweg naar de slaapplaats van de Gevleugelde Duisternis, een groep enorme draken die de wereld ooit in de as heeft gelegd. Deze beesten vormen nu de enige kans om de wereld te redden uit de klauwen van de Adalgars, een beruchte familie die de scepter zwaait over alles en iedereen.
Een gevaarlijke en vreemde tocht volgt, waarbij de kans op succes klein lijkt. Yorick en zijn reisgenoten hebben echter een dubieus voordeel: ze zijn net zo gevaarlijk en krankzinnig als hun missie.

* Book read in Dutch.
In a world that has been burned to the ground, Yorick Novak and his band of eccentric travel companions are on a journey to waken thousands of Darkness dragons, the same creatures that have destroyed the world once before. Because the world is ruled by an evil tyrant, Ragnar Adalgar and his family, and Yorick and his team want to see the world freed. A dangerous and weird journey follows in which they meet and kinds of creatures and people.
Pro's:
+ There are a lot of dragons in this book and all of them are as cool and violent as the other. In the beginning of the book there even is a chart which shows how large each dragon is in comparison to a human and I think that really is a nice touch to make everything more visual.
+ There is a lot of snark and sarcasm to this story and I found it one of the best things of the whole book. Not one page in this book takes itself too seriously and there was more than one occasion where I was laughing out loud.
Con's:
- The characters in this book are very, very bland and I literally connected with none of them. The emotions are very basic ( anger, grinning) and there was not a lot of backstory to any of the characters. Even at the end we only learn a bit about Yorick and the Old Dude, which was quite a bit of a shame.
- The pacing of this book was quite a bit off and therefore very uncomfortable to read. You hop from event + character to another event + character without any clear direction and especially the switch between characters ( also ones that are not that important) is really annoying.
Pfffft, overall I find this a very hard book to judge. There are some good things about it and it is very promising, but it was such a chore to read. There isn't a really clear flow through this story, the characters are bland as hell and there is so much happening that you will lose track of it all. So have it written out all clearly I think this book would have been two to three times as thick and that would have been a good thing. Because the concept of this book is quite great and I love the sarcastic angle of it all. But it just was not what I expected it to be and that was a bit of a shame.

Draken, draken, draken, een paar mensen en wat ertussen zit.
Gaaf verhaal om te lezen: veel actie afgewisseld met humor. Goed beeldend geschreven en leest enorm vlot. Het verhaal heeft zo nu en dan verrassende wendingen waarbij dingen toch anders in elkaar steken dan je denkt, wat de vele actie mooi compenseert.
Als ik een minpuntje moet noemen is het misschien dat de karakters niet heel diepgaand zijn qua emoties (vrolijk, cynisch, boos, vooral veel boos), maar dat maakt het verhaal niet minder leuk om te lezen.

Het boek is mooi geschreven, er zitten interessante ideeën in, maar halverwege het boek realiseerde ik me dat ik de personages nog steeds niet goed kende. De "waarom" mist soms. Het boek beschrijft op een poëtische manier wat er gebeurd en bij wie en waar, maar ik wachtte op de diepere laag.
Niet slecht voor een debuut, ik zou zo nog een boek van Jan van Gorkum oppikken!

Dit is het debuut van Jan van Gorkum.
Man, wat heb ik genoten van het boek! Het barst van de humor, spanning, complotten, leuke personages en DRAKEN, DRAKEN, DRAKEN. Yup, veel soorten draken. Oh, ook zitten er feeksen in het boek, en gruwelijke kerels.
Kortom: lezen dat boek!
Dit is het debuut van Jan van Gorkum.
