'An enchanting escape to the seaside. Pure magic!' Heidi Swain
'St Felix has stolen my heart yet again; a perfect, sparkling, summer read.' Cathy Bramley
Kate thinks all her wishes have come true when she opens her own little craft shop in the idyllic harbour town of St Felix.
But she soon finds a mystery lingers in her new shop - a sixty-year-old love story told through beautiful paintings and intricate embroideries.
Jack, the owner of the nearby art shop, volunteers to help Kate unravel the mystery, but in doing so they realise their own lives share some uncanny similarities with Clara and Arty, their 1950s counterparts . . .
Can Kate and Jack put right a decades-old wrong, and maybe find their own happy ending on the way?

Single mum Kate runs the little craft shop in the harbour town of St Felix, Cornwall. She had always dreamed of owning her own shop and after a horrible time in her past, she decided to up sticks and move and found her little gem.
She is unhappy when she hears that a new shop is about to open that will sell some items that she does. Newcomer disabled army vet Jack, has bought himself a shop to sell art equipment and can’t understand what Kate’s problem is as she only sells low-end art products where his will be high-end.
The pair are united in a mystery brought on by old craft equipment from a house clearance which seems to have a life of their own.
I always look forward to reading Ali McNamara’s books as you know there is going to be something mystical hiding within the pages of an amazing story and Kate and Clara’s Curious Cornish Craft Shop didn’t disappoint. In fact, I was so happy to see the mysterious goings-on start early in the book.
The writing is superb and the plot cleverly put together. The characters, Kate and Jack are both feisty and have plenty of attitudes. Both have pasts they would rather forget and futures they would like to enjoy. They really worked well together.
Once I began the book I didn’t want to stop, so much so that I read it in just two sittings. It is so beautiful, magical, and is set in a glorious harbour town that you can perfectly visualise as well as wish you were there. I also love that we get to go back in time to the 1950s St Felix and hear about Clara’s life with her sick daughter.
I now can’t wait for Ali McNamara’s next book. This one, for me, felt like her best work yet.
Insisto: LEANLO.
Four and a half stars. Kate is in her element as owner of a craft shop in the picturesque Cornish harbour of St Felix. Having slpirtwith obsessive boyfriend, Joel, she and Fifteen year old daughter Molly have settled happily into the town. When Kate is given an old Singer sewing machine strange things start to happen. Meanwhile Jack, a returned soldier now owner of an art shop, is having his own strange occurrences with the easel that came from the same house contents sale as Kate’s sewing machine. Despite some problems, Kate and Jack seek to resolve the mystery and learn what exactly happened to Clara, Arty and Maggie back in the 1950s. Told in two time frames, present day and 1950s, this novel got me in right from the start. I loved Kate and Molly. Took a little longer to warm to Jack who is very prickly, but much of that is because of his disability and the limitations it imposes on his life. Yes, you will need to suspend disbelief as the story involves magical realism, but it is so simply and charmingly accomplished. There are some characters to dislike and some who are not what they initially seem plus there is a wrong needs to be righted. But is it possible? A novel about overcoming hardship, family, friendship, community and romance. Lovely setting, great characters and charming story. A joy to read, it certainly kept me turning the pages
Whenever you are in St. Felix in an Ali McNamara novel, you know to expect the unexplainable! There is something about this Cornish town that provides a dash of the unusual and a sprinkling of what can only be described as magic.
So I was greatly impressed and intrigued as to what would be present in this story, and well I'm not going to say, but it is such an original idea, a really clever mechanism and really did add another dimension to this story.
As a massive fan of this author I was delighted to see a return to a familiar location and the previous heroines Poppy and Ana, are present in this book, not in a big way, but just enough to know what is going on with them. As a result this is easily a standalone book and if I hadn't just mentioned the setting and characters, then you probably wouldn't even realise while reading it!
There are two main stories being told, Kate, Jack and Julian's in the present day, and also Clara, Arty and Maggie's in the late 1950s. I loved seeing the parallels between the two and discovering just how they interconnected was a joy.
It is also a very nice change to have a hero and romantic lead in a wheelchair, you just don't see that anywhere near enough in the sorts of books I tend to read, and I loved Jack and his attitude to his disabilty so much. And it was eye opening as to how various people treated Jack.
I loved Kate's shop, her two colleagues who only have her best interests at heart and keep teasing her whenever she is meeting a man, even just as friends, and her teenage daughter who was one of those rare not overly stroppy sorts of teenager!
This was such a pleasure to read, from a truly magical author. I adored being back in St. Felix and Ali McNamara is one of only a few authors that can make me believe in the impossible and think it is all perfectly feasible!
Thank you to Sphere and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
What a lovely book! First of all itt takes place in a lovely seaside town, I love that! Then this story is different from the other chicklit books I have read so far in the fact that there is some magic happing in this book, something mysterious that we can't rationally explain and it gives the story a little very interesting twist. Then this book is also a bit different because the main male character is disabled and in a wheeled chair and I really liked that, it's important that disabled people are also featured in books. Then I really loved the romance aspect of this story! I can't wait to read another book by Ali McNamara! She is a brilliant author! I give this book a 4 stars out of 5!
Kate, a shop owner in St. Felix finds out that someone else is also about to open a shop that will be her competition. Kate runs an art and craft shop in the beautiful beach-town of Cornwall. She is a single mother to the fifteen year old Molly. Kate had moved to this town about a year ago and her dream of owning her own art and craft store had come to life in the town. Her shop does good business but she gets worried that a competitive shop might take a big bite out of her business.
Jack, the new shop owner is very rude to Kate upon their first meeting and Kate means all business until she realizes that Jack is disabled and he is in a wheelchair. They both buy some old equipment for their respective shops and they start to get magical embroidery from Kate's vintage sewing machine and a painting by Jack's vintage easel. Upon talking and being on friendly terms they both realize that they got the exact same picture through both their equipment and those two equipment came from the same old Victorian house with the blue door.
They start to see a magical scene when they align the embroidery and the painting over the easel. The scene is of a single mother Clara with her young daughter, Maggie who is in a wheelchair due to polio and they meet an artist named Arty and all this is from the 1957 St. Felix. They both start to get the embroidery and the painting often enough and the story from the 1957 keeps playing.
Meanwhile, the local gallery that had been shut down for the renovations for the last year or so opens up and they exhibit a St. Felix local artist who is internationally renewed, Winston James. Although Winston James is dead, his son Julian visits and promotes his dead father's work. He becomes interested in Kate and tries to befriend her. Kate and Julian start to become good friends and Kate realizes that he isn't really as stuck up as he first seems to be. Kate and Jack's friendship grows and dissipates, it's like a roller coaster for them. Kate makes it clear that she isn't interested in Julian but she is definitely very interested in Jack even though he is complicated.
Kate's daughter, Molly starts a relationship with a local kid but he turns out to be not the best person and Molly realizes that. Jack's son comes to visit in the summer holidays and Molly first gets infatuated with Ben but when she realizes that he's gay, she thinks of him as a big brother she never had. Ben also looks after Molly and they get along really well.
Kate and Clara's (from 1957) lives seem to more alike than she first thought it to be. Both scenes, present and past unfold as the book progresses and a shocker of a truth also comes to light. The renowned local artist, Winston James had stolen those paintings that he's celebrated for, from another artist in the past. Kate and Jack along Julian's help uncover the truth and bring light to the real artist's story and name.
I liked Kate. She was resilient, brave and independent. I didn't much like Jack, yes he was in a wheelchair but he was very rude for most of the book for my liking. He did grown on me a bit by the end but not much. I loved Ben, Sebastian, Anita and Molly. Julian was also okay. His character really developed. I do have to say though that the characters were kinda one-dimension, they lacked depth in them even though I did like most of them.
This is my second read from Ali McNamara so by now I know she uses a mystical element in her stories. Whilst I didn't like that element in Secrets and Seashells at Rainbow Bay, I did like how it played in this book. This book did start off very slow though, for the first 100 pages I didn't like at all but things changed and I started to enjoy it. A good read overall.
Things I enjoy about an Ali McNamara book; it's never boring and a little different. Back in the town of St Felix its set in present time and 1950's following two different love stories. I love the character of Kate, she's so funny to me and her relationship with her daughter Molly makes my heart melt. Jack is such an interesting character who can easily be treated differently but it's much better for him when he isn't. I loved how many characters were mentioned from the other St Felix books, I still loved Poppy in this one. Great story, highly recommend book and author. 4.5 Stars
Y no me equivoqué.
I haven’t read anything from this author before and I’m so glad that I did because, I have totally fallen in love with her writing! I knew nothing about this book before starting to read it but soon became very impressed! The book is set-in the wonderful little Cornish town of St,Felix and it sounds glorious - definitely somewhere I would love to visit or live. All the characters are wonderful, I think I fell in love with every single one of them!! This story has mystery and intrigue but best of all romance and also a little bit of magic, just to make it more special!! This is the third book by this author to be set-in St.Felix and I look forward to now reading the other two.....
Another gorgeous novel by Ali McNamara with a spellbinding twist. This novel gripped me from the start and I couldn't wait to find out more about what (and why) was happening to Jack and Kate. The cover is utterly gorgeous, with it's pastel colours, bright blue sea and the flowers. I enjoyed every page, the ending gave me shivers!
The book follows Kate, who has moved to the beautiful harbour town of St Felix with her daughter Molly. She opens a craft shop and does a good trade, selling her own handmade goods as well as goods from the other ladies in the town. So when newcomer Jack, arrives in the town and opens an art supplies shop, she is suitably peeved.
Jack is a mystery in itself. One moment he's nice and is quite humorous and then the next he clams up, however he is quite within his right as he had been through a fair amount of pain and heartbreak over the years and opening up his shop appears to be his therapy. Kate and Jack's relationship is like a rollercoaster. One moment up, the next they aren't speaking. It's clear to see however that there is a spark between them and the pair get on well, despite their clashes.
So when they both receive antique pieces of art equipment, such as an old easel and a sewing machine from a recent house clearing and mysterious artworks keep appearing, the pair decide that to find out what's happening, they must work together and the result is quite astonishing. This novel is full of magic and love, from both the present time and the 1950s. It was heartwarming and such an enjoyable read.
The characters seemed like such kind and caring people and the location of St Felix sounded beautiful. There are characters from some of Ali McNamara's other novels and it was nice that they made their appearances in this one, but you do not have to have read the other books to understand what is happening in this one. It's an easy and light read and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you to the publisher for a chance to read an advance copy of this novel via Netgalley, which I have reviewed honestly.
Kate moved to St Felix with her daughter many years ago. Making her dreams come true and opening up for own craft shop. She loves her life, her family, St Felix and her friends.
Then Jack moves to town opening up his own craft shop. Selling everything for the inspiring artist.
Dan Kate's friend is a person who tidies up a person's home at they have moved on or passed away. He usually sells things on for money. But when he finds an old singer sewing machine. He knows the perfect new home for it will be with Kate and the easel that he has found should go to Jack.
But the easel and sewing machine are both much more magical then they first appear and there is a mystery to solve that will bring jack and Kate together. Can Jack and Kate solve the mystery and put right the wrongs that have remained a secret since the 1950's.
Two lovely love stories unfold in this book that I am sure will uncover people's preconceptions of what the hero's in the books should be. A really refreshing and heartfelt different romantic book that I really enjoyed.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it. It had a lovely mix of magical/supernatural goings on and romance with a little mystery to solve. Loved the character and the setting in St Felix. Will look out for the other books set here now.
A nice little romance with a bit of a mystery weaved into the storyline too. Predictable but sometimes that’s ok because it’s just the right kind of easy to read story that you need. A bit of a palate cleanser.
What a delight this book was. I have read all of Ali McNamara’s previous books and she is one of my favourite authors, so I was very excited when I got approved for this one! It was so great.
It is the third of her books set in St Felix, the fictional Cornish town full of wonderful characters and magical happenings! I loved escaping here again and loved seeing some familiar faces pop up.
Kate and Molly were such great characters and I loved watching Kate’s relationship develop with Jack, a former soldier whose war injuries means he is now in a wheelchair.
This is Ali McNamara’s first book that she has written after being diagnosed with ME (chronic fatigue) and I absolutely loved her explanation of disabilities and how people react to those who are disabled. You could really see that she has her own experiences of this and it provided some wonderful insight. Jack’s views of his own disability made me cry at points as it was heartbreaking to see him view himself as a burden. He was such a great character and I loved his progression.
The magical elements were so special and I loved how it brought Kate and Jack closer together. I don’t want to give spoilers about the magic here, but I’ll just say it involves a sewing machine, an art easel and a trip into the past - all of which I loved!
The ending was also perfect and tied everything up so well. I definitely recommend this book (and all of Ali McNamara’s other books)!
Thank you to Netgalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book, (as have others of Ali McNamara) was set in the charming place called St Felix. We also had a glimpse of characters from previous books, and putting both of this together made it even more enjoyable. (You do not need to read her previous books before you read this but I guarantee you will want to re visit St felix once you have) The characters are from a range of backgrounds, all of which are loveable, this radiates out throughout the book and makes you feel like you want to walk down the cobbled street, browse through the shops and become part of their lives. The story was a light easy read but absolutely gripping from the first chapter. Its cramed full of Romance, sadness and a massive twist of magical mystery, it was a definate page turner as I could not put it down. Ali McNamara has produced another amazing book that I did not want to end. Thank you Little, Brown Book Group UK netgalley and Ali McNamara for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book as a pre publication. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look to the next one.
Absolute rubbish, boring, predictable and far fetched it's unbelievable
I kept reading this book hoping it would improve but in reality it got worse. The author uses the same story line in all her books just changes the names of the characters it appears. Girl meets boy, start off hating him then falls in love and live happily ever after, throw in some unbelievable mystic happenings and some stereotypes typical of a Cornish village, the end. Absolute rubbish. Mind numbingly boring trash, waste of my money and time.
