Me and my better half visited Paris together, for her a first time and for me the first time in 23 years. What was absolutely on the travel itenary was of course the Louvre. This amazing place full of amazing art and history has no place that can really compete with it, filled with Iconic material. And it indeed starts with its new entrance shaped like a pyramid that is a piece of art in itself. The Louvre is absolutely and overwhelming place it is a piece of great art in itself and sourely missing in this book.
This book is a highlight with short chapters on the various piece of the collection displayed in the Louvre. With of course the Mona Lisa placed in the centre of the book, just like it is placed in te centre of the Italian wing which contains some other brilliant iconic Italian artists.

A long time ago in my youth I visited the Louvre early on a weekday and ended up alone in the room with the Mona Lisa, with a museum employee of course. Those were 5 glorious minutes before a large group of Japanese tourists made a noisily entrance. Such luxuries exists no more these days with mass tourism.

The book does show a lot of great art and tells about it and illustrated with good art. If you only look at the art that is in this book you'll have a grand day in the Louvre.

When I return to Paris I will certainly visit the Louvre and I will gladly see some more of this art because that is what the Louvre is an never ending treasure chest of human accomplishment in one of the most beautiful cities of the world.

This book reads like a love letter to the Louvre, and like the museum it is an overkill of information. But well worth the time reading it.

I did buy this book in the souvenir shop of the Louvre museum at the 23rd of April 2022.

A light, digestible approach to art history and impressionist works (particularly those that can be seen at the Musee D'Orsay. Work a browse and fun to have around.
