Number of new friends made in this volume: 0.
This volume is one of the funniest thus far in the series, and really seems like the artist/author wanted to take some time to get to know the characters more. There's several extremely funny chapters this time around a few scene where we just see the characters interact with each other.
While the art remained pretty much the same as the last volume, we can see something of an evolution in the structure of the series. The chapters are getting longer (some of the chapters in the first book were... shockingly short) and there's a better structure to them. More of a narrative (even if it is a short one) and some experimentation on how to deal with the characters. While Komi herself may be stuck, the series itself is improving.
Favorite chapter this time: Two of Komi's friends try to predict what she's thinking... their perspective of her is pretty hilarious.
Another solid 4/5 star read.

The fourth volume about Komi, who is both sort of popular and also suffers a pretty disabling communication disorder. This volume features hijinks with respect to a sports festival, eh. Komi's goal is to make friends with 100 fellow students but makes no new friends in this volume, so things slow down as we kinda (not too deeply) get to know some of the characters and as Oda tries out more of his comedic chops. It's a good series!

Strong chapters at the start and end bracket an overly long and unfunny sports festival sequence in the middle. I worry that the author is settling into a status quo too quickly as Komi seems to make little to no progress in her communication disorder this volume.

Omg the cuteness just doesn’t stop!! Komi is so flipping adorable and these are too funny in a sweet way. It just gets me every time when someone misunderstands Komi because she can’t communicate with people. I can’t help it!! It’s like a compulsion to adore cute and awkward things. Or people/characters as it were. And people just fall in love with her all over the place!! It warms my heart and I just want to keep reading!!
So yes, I still recommend this series!! It’s adorable, funny, and I’m starting to think Tadano has more than friends feelings for Komi!!! Can’t wait to see how that develops!!!

Komi is super popular despite her aloof reputation. Only timid Tadano seems to notice that she doesn't talk... ever! When she reaches out to him on the first day of class he quickly realizes it's awkwardness holding her back. Now he'll become her first friend in her quest to make 100 friends.
Tadano and Komi’s relationship has some ups (gift exchange!) and downs (too embarrassed to speak more intimately). But it is progressing! My most favorite character beyond Komi is Tadano, so I love these moments between them.
I noticed the chapters in vol 4 got longer. Like all of them. There weren’t any short chapters. I think that was a mistake. While I enjoy the long chapters, having shorter chapters is also nice, especially with new characters and fringe characters.
I really liked the new girl from the country who saw Komi as super sophisticated. The chapter where she follows Komi to Subway was hilarious. The other new character was rather forgettable. They need to stand out so I can keep track of them.
I wasn’t a fan of some of the sports festival. It was a little boring... but I totally cheered to see Komi rise up again after being tripped up. Moments like these where she learns something about herself or makes progress, or even just tries makes my heart swell for her. Mental health for the win in Komi Can’t Communicate vol 4.

Ah, the all-important school athletic festival!
Well, we're up to volume 4 and still going strong. I've reached the point where specific events in the manga no longer matter. Each volume is a chance to visit with old friends. Komi and Tadano totally like each other, but are both much too shy to admit it. Pretty sure the volume count will be well into double digits before either of them realizes that the other feels that way. Maybe triple digits, even.

Welcome Back!
I love Komi! These mangas were a gift from my husband at Christmas time (the first three anyway) I started reading them pretty much right away and I fell in love. Then I pre-ordered the next however many I could and it's now considered a beloved series for me. I look forward to every time these pop into my mailbox and I get to read another volume and then talk about how much I enjoyed my time with it to anyone who will listen. This volume is no exception, I still loved reading more of Komi's quest to make 100 friends and just learning more about her life.
SPOILERS AHEAD
In this volume, we see Komi still struggle to communicate but for the first time ever she does not want the summer to end because she is actually enjoying herself and her free time with her friends. Once school starts back up we see Komi and her friends participate in the annual sports day event where her mother comes to cheer her and her classmates on. We also see the start of the school year and Komi making a new friend!
I enjoyed my time with this volume a lot! I loved seeing the end of summer and Komi as well as her friends dealing with the last day and back to school dread. I also enjoyed meeting Komi's newest friend and seeing how her peers reacted to meeting her mother. I am giving this volume five stars on Goodreads and I am looking forward to picking up the next one really soon.

Here's another update on the series.
I liked the first two volumes. However, volumes three and four felt more boring. In the first two, Komi makes memorable friends, but in the third and fourth, I can't name a single friend she made. I know she did make at least one friend in the fourth volume, but Komi never really spends time with her, so I don't remember the character's name.
I am still enjoying the series, but I think it's not as good as it was when it started. I hope the later volumes will change this.

I continue to enjoy each volume of this series, but I do wish that Todano and Komi were getting some more time alone. I want to see that friendship blossom into more, as I expect it to do later in the series.

This volume ends summer vacation and sees Komi wanting to switch to first names. I wish older mangas had kept this, as it is usually a huge turning point for relationships and is always cute, as well as being a big part of Japanese culture.
We get the sports day here as well, and see some creeps of teachers there.
There's one new country character who gets a bit of screen time and becomes enamored of Komi, though not on Komi's radar yet.
The arcade/ photoboth part was really cute in this one!
A cute series that has humor and some deeper themes about anxiety.

This volume felt slightly stagnant, particularly when compared to the previous one, with not much happening in terms of the main story, whether if that's Komi making new friends, making progress in her communication skills (though, in all honesty, there is some of that here... she cheered!), or just seeing any significant advance in her relationship with Tadano... or any other of her friends, I guess.
Still cute, maybe a tad more comical than other instalments, and a tad more silly too. A step or two down the ladder for me, so I hope it doesn't start loosing its charm...

I feel like the manga is finally settling into its storyline, with this volume, which had plenty of cute moments and adorableness. With the summer vacation coming to an end, Komi and the others get some last minute hangouts and homework in. Even Komi at home, languishing in the heat and hanging out with her little brother is so adorable! Then, as the school term begins, we are introduced to another new character, a country girl who is intimidated by the 'city girls' and especially by Komi. She misunderstands everything, including even seeing Komi's anxiety over ordering food as cool reserve. During the school sports events, there are plenty of hilarious moments where Komi's popularity as the class princess helps her out immensely, but one notable person impressed with her in an upperclassmen who rates everyone on a temperature scale. One little tidbit I loved later was Tadano, Nakanaka and Yumai having a contest to see who can guess Komi's internal thought process; Tadano wins, no surprise there. I love their relationship, which is mostly platonic with very slight romantic tinges here and there. As Komi gets more comfortable among her friends and starts to experience more teenage stuff, I suppose there's a chance a romantic angle might be thrown onto the story, but even so far it is so sweet!

Not as good as previous volumes; this one is pretty uneven. The sports day story is a bit dull, the new character is... just okay, at best.
Still, the core cast (including basically a trans character that nobody bats an eyelash at, which is a nice touch) is mostly solid and, while Komi has trouble communicating, it’s still true that Tadano always knows what she’s thinking, which is pretty cute (they don’t do anything particularly romantic with this until the end, but the payoff to the photo booth storyline in the extras is adorable).
There are some good parts here, the summer sections have a very sweet denouement and Tadano trying to educate on how to read Komi is really fun, but there’s nothing exceptional compared to the last collection.

I'm going to be honest, I'm starting to tune out the newer characters introduced (such as Netsuno and Inaka) because I think the central cast is solid and I straight up don't care about newer characters. That being said, I wouldn't say that either of these newbies are bad, just not as interesting as our main cast.
I loved this volume, especially the sports festival and the chapter dedicated to Komi's day in the house. The humor is strong, the characters are fun, the dynamic between the characters continues to be the strong point of this series, and the gags (while repetitive) are still enjoyable. Glad I stuck with this series, can't wait for volume 5!

I really like this series for its mostly episodic chapters. It's a really fun and light read, but it's starting to introduce more characters and I'm having a hard time telling when I first met them or even their names. I wish this had a character guide to help me identify some unfamiliar faces. Still, I'm here for Komi and that's what matters.

Komi has my heart, and I hope this series goes on for a long time. It's so genuinely warm and funny, reading it feels like spending time with close friends.
