This is not a typical «detox» book that will tell you that you need to lose weight or that you by following this book you will lose anything other than “bad habits”. All in all I think it’s a good book that talks about the importance of wellness and finding peace within yourself. It also makes it seem possible to continue with the habits this book mentioned. It has easy recommendations and guides to meditation, movement, and also some good recipes. It is a quick read and a good starting point if you are curious about meditation, yoga and overall wellness. She makes it clear that all our bodies are different, and what work for some won’t work for all. She also recommends seeing your doctor to ensure you get all the nutrition you need.
However there are some things to be aware of. Tara uses one of her friends, who died of cancer, as an example of what “bad habits” can lead to. She mentioned that of course genes has something to do with it too, but I feel that the underlying message is that if you live healthy and follow her guidelines you will not get sick. The following quote is from this book: “I often wonder if it was exhausting for Stu to cycle between his destructive phases and his spiritually awake phases. I wonder how many chances each of us is given to stray from our purpose and then return to it.” So I will put in a disclaimer for her; Always seek out medical advice when you are sick. This book will not cure your disease. Also, an “energy healer” might help you with some issues, but please go to a psychologist or a doctor if you need to talk.
The title of the book was a turn-off for me, and the whole idea that someone could be “clean” or not, but that was probably more the publisher than Tara. So if you can get past that it’s OK. Tara herself is so genuine, warm, and honest in real life, and I think that comes across in her writing. It’s nothing fancy or elitist as the wellness world can be. She just has a way of making content relaxing and fun and easy to digest (ha). For people looking for this kind of straightforward body and mind work or “reset” with photos for inspiration, Tara is generally a great guide.
One note: I do think people who have never really been sick before should be careful about assuming that they have more control than they do over their wellness than any expert would say they do and risk "victim-blaming" people who are or have been sick. There are times when Tara's advice should not be advice at all as not an expert or medical professional and could come across as blaming to those who have illness of any kind. An "if your sick it's because you didn't eat enough greens or do enough yoga" type message comes through at times. Although. I think if you asked her about it she would say that's not how it's intended or the message she wants to send.
I’ve been so sedentary during COVID that finding CLEAN MIND, CLEAN BODY seemed miraculous. It’s just what I need to get back on track. It offers a gentle 4-week detox program focused on mind, spirit, eating, and movement. Photos of yoga poses plus delicious recipes are included. It seems so doable and I can’t wait to see how I feel in a month!

This book was received as an ARC from Dey Street Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I needed to read a book like this during these tough times to be reminded that just because times our tough, does not mean our bodies have to suffer. Tara Stiles does a remarkable job in displaying the importance of what goes into and comes out of your body is all part of the process and cycle to help you stay healthy and stay alive. I love the four week breakdown and examined how each week should be done to get the best results. Everyone deserves to feel and be their best.
We will consider adding this title to our R in our Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
This is Tara Stiles' first book that I have read. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and will most likely read her other books as well and maybe even practice some yoga with her too.
A few months ago, I subscribed to her on FB because I have heard about her for many years and I wanted to know bit more about her and what she stands for. She is so layback, simple and always looks so relaxed when she invites you through FB live to join her Strala Yoga practice. She says, "join me if you feel a pull". That is the same ease you feel when you read this book. That is the same ease you feel when you read this book, you feel drawn to the message.
The cover of the book is very attractive and so beautiful and the book is very easy to read. It is like she is having a conversation with you. I could have read the book in an entire day, however as I was reading the book, I started to practice what she is advising me to do, which is limit my screen time as I was reading it on my kindle and practice having more balance in my day. and thus I read this book a couple of pages each day and have the messages marinated into my mind. I am so grateful to have received a temporary E-gally from #Netgalley and the publisher Dey Street Books.
What I mostly like about this book is that it is not your typical detox book, as she encompasses detox fully, and provides a week by week approach to a total detox. Week 1 focuses on mental detox and week 2 on Spiritual detox The third week focuses on change the way we eat so our bodies feel better and the last week focusses on not just moving the body but also on the way we move throughout the day; moving well. This really resonated with me as I have been practicing yoga for sometime and I am becoming aware of how much of how we move matter.
Tara also provides some great and easy to make smoothies and basic recipes all designed to be easy on digestion and nourishing to our bodies. Her section on breathing and breathing exercises is so relevant at all times bit even more so now. She also provides descriptions and photos of simple yoga and Tai Chi exercises, that clearly illustrate that "moving well" does not have to be complicated.
This book is great for everyone as it is such a simple and not complicated guide to living well. This makes it so easy to take what we have learned and apply it to our lives. I highly recommend #CleanMindCleanBody for yourself and as a gift to your dear loved ones.
This is a great book for pandemic times when we all have been letting our health go and are dealing with so much stress. I love the premise of a 4 week program that is simple basic health tips and easy to follow. I enjoyed the different sections on importance of nutrition, sleep, meditation and movement . The author emphasis various techniques anyone can follow to reduce stress and improve your daily health. I highly recommend this book and look forward to incorporating the program into my daily routine.
Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review is my own.
Liked this book a lot. I have been following Tara for a while now so some things in this book I knew already so was a good reminder but have also learnt a good deal more.
If you’re a stay-at-home mom who has never meditated or exercised before, this book is for you! I’m neither of those things so I didn’t get much from this book (except a tasty sounding recipe for a tumeric smoothie).
80% of the book is spent justifying mindfulness. If you’ve got the book, you’ve already bought in, so why would you need that? The rest is 10% recipes and 10% pictures of yoga and tai chi positions and repeated reminders to breath and clean your house. Sigh. Nothing at all new here, move along.
In Clean Mind, Clean Body, Strala Yoga founder Tara Stiles merges Eastern philosophies and practices with several integrative life and wellness coaching strategies to provide a four-week blueprint for recalibrating one’s mental, physical, and spiritual wellness. I’m a particular fan of the ways Stiles emphasizes how our external environments impact our “internal ecosystem.” Her plan outlines an approach for detoxing from unhealthy relationships, device addictions, and the detrimental traditional Western diet. She includes around 20 clean body recipes and encourages readers to reframe and reimagine exercise. While the information provided is helpful, it’s not always accessible, and the plan conflates emotional with mental wellness, giving neither their necessary due to truly deliver a holistic reset. There’s also some trite “best self” language and a lot of “shoulds” that tell but don’t show. Ultimately for me, this book delivered entry-level advice sprinkled with some Cali and Ayurveda cuisine. I was disappointed that there wasn’t anything new here.
I received a digital pre-publication copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I just couldn’t finish this. I am a yoga teacher, even own a small yoga & Pilates studio. I teach mindfulness, meditation & self-care for a living. I listened to more than half and just couldn’t finish. I found the author self righteous and out of touch, it felt boastful. It didn’t feel like real yoga, true Buddhism. A lot of shoulds. Deep in privilege. Just didn’t feel very tangible or accessible. Lacked depth and heart. I gave up for something more meaningful.
What a fantastic book to jump start the new year with! Clean Mind, Clean Body is all about reconnecting with yourself and clearing the toxins from your body!
Split into four weeks, 1 month (totally achievable). Week 1 - Mental Cleanse, Week 2 - Spiritual Detox, Week 3 - Change the Way You Eat, and Week 4 - Change the Way You move. Each week focusing on a different piece of health that together create one whole, healthy being.
I loved all the exercises for breathing and movement, tips and techniques to clear the clutter in your mind and body, and practical ways to implement those techniques into everyday life. Clean Mind, Clean Body will help many discover the beauty of their bodies and how to live a life of intention!
I'm excited to implement this into my life starting in January and if you're looking for a reset, this is your guide!
Fav. Quotes:
"Deep down what we really want is to be free from the toxic cycles of stress, anxiety, and insecurity. It's uncomfortable to admit how disconnected we have become from our true selves, from our mental, physical and spiritual health and from our relationships with others. We want a better way, but don't know where to begin."
"True healing is simple and it starts within. It begins with a decision and a commitment to change."
This was an enjoyable and informative read on how to mentally, spiritually, and physically detox. This has a lot of great content and is very adaptable. I loved how the exercises had pictures to show what everything is. There are recipes included for the physical section, though I was a bit disappointed they did not have pictures or nutritional information (beyond calorie counting, it can be necessary for medical conditions that are controlled through diet). While most of the information was not new to me, I still really liked this book.
Loved loved loved this book. Loved the 28 day program, the lessons, stories, tips, meditation techniques, the recipes. Each week focused on one segment, such as mental cleanse. It also a guide for daily living and applying this to your day, weekdays, weekends. I was given a free copy of this book for review, but ended up pre-ordering the hardcover. It’s a book I want on my keeper-shelf to refer to again and again.
The first half of the book is is so inspiring and helpful with tips and tricks. This book breaks down multiple reasons why you could have this problem and then gives you multiple different answers and ways on which you can approach on how to fix this. The second half was a little bit of a trigger for me with a past of an eating disorder and still recovering it was uncomfortable to hear how to achieve the ideal weight etc. definitely wasn’t what I was expecting from the title of the book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Fantastic book for helping people feel their best and boost their health. I loved the recipes and can’t wait to try most of them! The movement practices are all things I have learned from Tara and Mike in the past by following them on social and practicing with them, BUT a refresher is always appreciated. Especially learning how to move with ease during everyday activities. The passages from Tara’s role models were a nice addition.
This book provides a practical how-to guide to living a healthier, more conscious life. It emphasizes simplicity in mind and spirit, clean/healthy eating and easy movement. There are recipes for natural cleaners and healthy foods as well as some brief movement practices. I enjoyed flipping through the book, but as it functions more like a reference manual than a book of insights, I'll return it to the library and let them hold onto it for me. There wasn't much that was new for me here.
This book is right on time as an amazing reminder to make our mental and physical self-care a priority each day and to soften a bit more with challenges that may arise. The recipes are all amazing and there are so many unique ways to incorporate gentle movement throughout the day. Highly recommend.
Excellent book to read when you are ready to make some simple, doable changes to your daily routine. We, as a society, spend to much time being "busy" but it gets us nowhere. Take time to be good to yourself, that is what's most important. The author breaks it down into doable steps that makes sense.
Clean Mind, Clean Body is a fantastic book to jump-start the new year with! Full of tips, tricks, and techniques to clear the clutter in your mind and body, and practical ways to implement those techniques into everyday life. Clean Mind, Clean Body is a book that I will refer to often.
I love Tara Stiles and this was a very easy read. Only reason why it's not 5 stars for me is because there are elements of there being nothing new. However, I enjoy her light and breezy style of writing.
Came into my life at a good time - just finished up some time consuming projects that had me really busy and this book was good timing as I begin to transition back into relaxed lifestyle mode. Ready for a laid back summer with a clean mind and clean body.
While I love Tara Stiles and appreciate her perspective this did not give me anything I didn't already know or think to do based off of previously watching her or other holistic yoga instructors and guides. I do appreciate it all being put into one collection though.
Absolute perfection! I enjoy the way she writes, so simple yet so uplifting. The book is full of great advice, ideas, recipes and exercises. So good and motivating!
