She loves him… but he has chosen another.A typical morning for Maggie turns into chaos when an unknown man bursts into her home and threatens to kill her. Deeply frightened, her emotions soon turn to heartache when she learns the man she loves has proposed to another. Forced to leave London alone with him for her safety, she refuses to let him see her broken heart. Simon, has known Maggie her entire life and is annoyed that she is in love with him. Betrothed to the daughter of a wealthy duke, nothing can prevent his marriage.Unforeseen danger brings them together, and Simon’s barriers slowly come down as Maggie works her way into his heart. A heart he can never give her.
I love a bit of angst with the h's unrequited love and the H's annoyance that she has followed him around for years. But this tripped over itself with the chatter about . Some editing there would have been good. I liked Maggie the h mostly - but she came across as a little clingy towards the end in her love for Simon despite having 2 perfectly nice alternate suitors. I'm glad she was appreciated by others, but needed a little more of Simon noticing that. I would have liked to see Maggie put some distance between them once Simon recovered from his illness (since she's a total saint about him marrying this other woman), and then have Simon realize (and voice to the reader) that he missed her and feared losing her. At one point, Maggie says she will send others to care for him and will stop watching over him at night - but that doesn't really happen. I wanted to see Simon take fault with the care of everyone but his Maggie, and pine for her. And Simon should have gotten a bit more jealous and little but more humble at the end . There wasn't enough of that regret/fear/grovel from Simon. And finally - this one ended abruptly - needs that HEA epilogue on the end where we see Simon being a good husband. Add that in and Ms Hart would have some nice little 99 cent buys in Amazon. I like that her storylines are different enough to hook me. These are good KindleUnlimited - outside of that, I wouldn't go over $1.99 for these. I am actually hoping we see Elizabeth and Rawlings (I'd pay $2.99 for that). You can do it, Barb!
This whole book had too many plots for a reader to comprehend. I stopped reading at 65% when Maggie was shot in the garden, I had all I could take. For Maggie to have a 5000 pound bounty on her head was completely unbelievable, that amount of money in that time period was a true fortune. And then we have poor Simon whose brain I believe was concussed at birth with all his waffling on everything. And Nicky was just as bad with his decision making. Anyone with a brain in their head would not send his unmarried sister out with a single male and not expect her to be ruined. Then he says she has to marry anyone so there won't be a scandal. Would any reader of Regency era books believed that scenario, no way! I would recommend any reader to pass this book by and you will not waste your time.
