The follow-up to the best-selling The Whole Smiths Good Food Cookbook with easy recipes for weeknight cooking
Today, more than ever, people are looking to transition to a whole foods-based diet, aware of the health benefits of fresh foods over highly processed options. Still, people are used to convenience, and have busy schedules and little time to put a meal on the table. The Whole Smiths Real Food Every Day solves the problem of what’s for dinner during a hectic week. With simple, accessible recipes that are designed to be made ahead, used for leftovers, or thrown into a slow cooker, families will be able to easily prepare healthy meals on a regular basis. Chapters like Sheet Pan Recipes, One-Pot Wonders, Meal Prep, and Leftover Makeovers will guide readers in making the most of their time in the kitchen while delivering healthy recipes that can be made with minimal effort. This follow-up to the best-selling The Whole Smiths Good Food Cookbook will also highlight which recipes are gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, and more, making it easy to prepare recipes to fit into any diet.
This is yet another "healthy eating" book that doesn't include nutritional information, which is a major pet peeve of mine. Folks who have to monitor their fat, carbs, protein, fiber or sodium are out of luck when trying to determine which recipes will work for their families. It's also another book that defines healthy eating by the author's family's specific beliefs, needs and preferences, which may or may not match yours. In this case, it's whole 30, gluten free, mostly grain free, mostly dairy free, heavy on meat, and all natural with the exception of added trendy ingredients like collagen peptides. Many recipes are paleo, not very many are keto, and some are vegan and vegetarian.
Very few grains are used at all, even ones that others might consider healthy like quinoa, wild rice or amaranth (with the exception of oats), so it will work well for paleo folks. That said, it uses a lot of carbs like tapioca flour and honey (even in savory dishes) so it won't work very very well for keto folks without modifications. Photos accompany about half of the recipes, many of which include the author and her family.
Chapters include make-ahead, instant pot, sheet pan, weekend (indulgence), five ingredients or less, meal prep, tips, etc. There are no specific chapters for vegetarian, breakfast, soups and salads, etc. and these are mixed in the other chapters. There are many tips that will be helpful for those who are new to cooking or new to "whole foods" cooking.
This will be a fantastic cookbook for those whose needs and tastes match the author's. My family's don't really match well and the recipes didn't appeal to me that much, but they're likely to be a home run with other families.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
I know I'm gonna love a cookbook when a chapter is titled "aww, sheet" as I can't resist a play on words. But a cookbook needs to be more than amusing and this book definitely is!
This cookbook is full of fresh healthy food, very nearly paleo with a reliance on coconut aminos and almond flour. If you follow a paleo diet, or aspire to, this is a great cookbook full of many non traditional recipes full of flavor. Nearly every recipe (maybe all of them) have photos.
Thank you Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Whole Smiths Real Food Every Dayis a cooking and style guide with recipes developed by Michelle Smith. Due out 29th Dec 2020 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, it's 272 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is an upbeat well written cookbook with a family vibe full of attractive healthy well prepared recipes. The introduction includes a whole-food philosophy which makes a lot of sense. The author makes a good case for eating fewer processed meals for health and well being (sort of paleo, but not fanatically so).
The book's introduction contains a list of tips and tricks which are really useful covering a range of tasks like pitting cherries, shredding chicken, getting more mileage out of pickle brine after the pickles are gone, and a host of other small tasks. The recipes themselves are arranged a bit whimsically (there's an index, so it's not really a problem): ingredients and make-ahead staples, meal prep recipes, sheet pan recipes, five ingredients or fewer, one dish, 30 minutes or less, instant, leftovers, weekend recipes.
They have their ingredients listed bullet style in the sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only. There is no nutritional info provided. Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and step by step cooking directions. Special features such as gluten-free, grain-free, and nut-free are noted in the header.
The ingredients are mostly easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store; not all though (coconut aminos and collagen peptides for example - but as the author notes, those items can be sourced online). Roughly half the recipes are pictured (by my rough estimate). The photographs which are included are clear and appealing and serving suggestions are appropriate. Many of the photos are of the author and her beautiful (and healthy) family, which adds a personal touch. There's also a useful recipe list with a chart showing dairy-free, gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, paleo, vegan, and vegetarian status for every recipe in the collection individually. There's a useful cross-referenced index which is useful since the recipes are not arranged by category.
This book would make a great gift/housewarming for someone cooking for themselves or family members with special dietary needs, containing appealing recipes, and fans of food-prep planning / batch cooking. These are healthy and tasty recipes.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Want to eat healthy but short on time? This cookbooks is a must have. Loaded with delicious recipes with short ingredient lists and even shorter prep/cook times. You'll find make ahead meals, meals that allow you to make other meals from the leftovers, instant pot meals and much more. I especially loved the grab and go breakfast recipes as getting my kids to eat a healthy breakfast before school has been a challenge.
Thank you to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and NetGalley for allowing me to read a pre-release of this cookbook. My review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
The Whole Smiths Real Food Every Day Healthy Recipes to Keep Your Family Happy Throughout the Week by Michelle Smith Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Genre: Cooking, Food & Wine Release Date: December 29, 2020
I thought the 26 tips at the beginning of the book were super helpful and a great idea to include!
I am on a health journey and have been trying to find cleaner, healthier versions of my husbands favorite meals (or at least meals that he will eat). When I saw this book, I was hoping that this would include a lot recipes I could try with my husband, but unfortunately he won't eat most of the ingredients used (yes, because they are healthier...but also because they can't be disguised well).
I did find some recipes that I think he would be willing to try though, like the Sheet Pan Harissa Chicken and Veggies, Apple-Cinnamon Mini Frittatas, Balsamic Chicken Thighs with Mushroms and Caramelized Onions, Apple "Pasta", Chai-Spiced Kettle-Style Apples, Drive-Through Burger Bowls, Hawaiian Chicken Thighs, and Carnitas Ramen Noodles. I am excited to try some of these, since they are made from better ingredients and I think they'll be better for us in the long run because they are made from real food.
There are a lot of pictures and easy to follow instructions. Some of the recipes seemed a little overwhelming, but I think that once I became familiar with the techniques and ingredients they would become easier.
Each recipes lists an estimated number of servings and which dietary restrictions the recipes meets. There is no nutrition information for the recipes though.
I'm so grateful to Michelle Smith, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. Some great recipe ideas and wonderail tips. Easy to follow instructions, lots of nice pictures. Again, big drawback is lack of nutritional information. Nice to know it is gluten free, dairy free etc but fats and sugar counts would be nice to know. Firecracker cauliflower was a hit. Everyone loved the dun-dried tomato snd goat cheese frittata. The Italian dub skewers were good and fun to make. A very nice change of pace for lunch. 3.5 stars, rounded down because of lack of nutritional information.
Real Food Every Day is a very approachable cookbook that allows for a variety of food systems and prioritizes making (and eating!) fresh and satisfying food. I really liked how she leans into the "food freedom" concept and acknowledges that what everyone wants and needs from "healthy" food is different.
"You can still enjoy your favorite foods while living a very healthy lifestyle. In fact, I venture to say, an even healthier lifestyle, because you can release the mental traps that come with the extremes. There's a wide array of "healthy" that falls between a strict one-thousand-calorie-a-day diet designed to maintain a certain size and continually consuming processed fast foods and shotgunnings sugar-laden sodas. This book represents that healthy. They healthy that still loves to have pizza every now and again but is mindful of how it affects your body." (from the introduction)
I just really appreciated this approach and it results in a book of recipes that includes sweet, savory, healthy, AND cravable recipes. I also really appreciated her section of simple recipes that basically just use what's in your pantry and a handful of fresh foods, and the instant pot section. These are so great for weekday nights and easy meals that still allow me to fuel my body with the things that make me feel good. But there's also adventurous and more complicated. Overall it was such a nice mix, I've liked everything I've tried to make from the cookbook, and am looking forward to working some of these recipes into the regular rotation here.
Quotations are from the pre-publication review and may not reflect publication changes. Thanks to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I follow Whole30 on IG, so I have heard of "the whole Smiths" and was excited to get a temporary digital review copy of this new cookbook. It is broken into sections based more on cooking methods or time than by ingredient. For example, there is a section for "sheet pan" meals.
I've been cooking "whole food" for a long time because of several food allergies and intolerance issues. This book has great recipes, many that can be modified easily. For example, the Harissa chicken sheet pan recipe could easily have the harissa replaced by something else, like honey mustard or barbecue sauce. Novice cooks might be thrown by long ingredient lists on some recipes, but I can tell you that mole sauce is about a third the length of a traditional mole recipe and I can't wait to try it.
The tips in the beginning as well as tips strewn throughout the book are fantastic and worth the price of admission, even if, like me, you know of some of them. A few recipes did not include photos, and I'm not sure so many photos of the family are necessary, but I'm sure fans will appreciate getting to know them more.
This is the type of cookbook I will pick up at some point and cook my way through. I recommend it! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a review copy.
**I received and voluntarily read an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
At the beginning of the book, you'll find some great tips on how to make your cooking life a little bit easier. While a couple of them were familiar to me, the 26 tips you'll find there are great for those new to cooking.
Most of the recipes look delicious and like things that I would love to eat. I like that at the beginning of the recipes, the author lists the approximate serving size the recipes create as well as the diets that the recipes cater to (dairy free, gluten free, paleo, vegetarian, etc.)
The photos were nice and the food looked good. If she and the publisher insisted on including so many photos of her and her family in the book, it would have been nice if they seemed a little more natural and less like everything had been run through several instagram filters.
Overall, there are some great looking recipes to be found within this book.
Healthy recipes in a friendly and family oriented cookbook. Mouth watering recipes.....oh yea. I think I bookmarked the majority of this cookbook. Wow...they look truly amazing.
What did I like? The condiment section was truly amazing. I can not wait to try some of these great looking recipes. Author gives us some fun tidbits but dives head on into some great clean eating with a paleo diet recipes. Real food is where it’s at these days. Some of the pictures just looked positively decadent. I can’t wait to try some of these recipes.
Would I recommend or buy? I really want a copy...it’s on my wish list. The author has a passion for the paleo style eating and I enjoyed seeing her family blanket the pages. Diversity of the book was nice too...meal prep, using leftovers, 30 minute dinners...etc. I really enjoyed the cookbook.
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left my opinion. Five stars..loved it.
This book was received as an ARC from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I absolutely loved this book and all the recipes featured in it. Michelle and her family are so adorable and they have so many wonderful stories to share. The recipes look absolutely delicious and I can't wait to try them especially the apple cinnamon frittatas. I also appreciated the fact that a lot of the dishes focused around foods you can find at any supermarket and farmer's markets. There are many healthy cookbooks out there but this one focuses on foods that make you feel good and enjoy life rather than what/how these foods are good for your body. When our cooking demo comes back, this book is a definite good candidate and our community will love it.
We will consider adding this title to our TX Non-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
A new year calls for new goals and new direction. One such goal on most people’s list is eating healthier foods and meals. The Whole Smiths Easy Recipes for Weeknight Cooking by food blogger, Michelle Smith, gives you many recipe options which focus on whole-food meals with the use of minimally processed and nutrient dense foods. I like that each recipe will state whether it’s dairy free, gluten free, grain free, nut free, paleo or vegetarian. This is helpful when looking for recipes that meet any special dietary needs.
Some recipes that I’m looking forward to trying are from The Sheet Pan section such as: Sriracha Salmon & Broccoli and Sheet Pan Eggplant Parmesan. And don’t these 30 Minutes or less recipes sound good: Drive-Through Burger Bowls and Italian-Sub Skewers.
I want to thank #NetGalley, the publisher and #TheWholeSmithsRealFoodEveryday for a free digital ARC for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a very well thought out cookbook. As someone who eats gluten and dairy free I was excited to see so many options that involved ingredients I already have on hand or could find easily. I like that there are sections for quick meals, instant pot meals, and sheet pan meals, and the index in the back that tells you which meals are gluten free dairy free, etc. is pretty genius. Great photos throughout, too and I like the quick stories/explanations behind each recipe. Only critique I would give is I don’t see myself using any of the recipes in the leftovers section, where you take previously made meals from other parts of the cookbook and incorporate them into new dishes. Some people may find the organization a little off putting (e.g in the 5 ingredients or less section, a dinner recipe followed by a matcha-kale smoothie), but that didn’t bother me.
I wasn't familiar with this blogger before receiving this cookbook to review but I am always looking for great new cookbooks that focus on whole foods. Before getting into the recipes, the author gives some handy tips and tricks. The recipes are heavy on animal products so if you're vegetarian or vegan, this is not the cookbook for you. There is a table at the end showing which recipes are vegan, vegetarian, paleo, gluten-free, etc which is handy and not something I've seen in a lot of cookbooks. As a vegan, I was hoping for more suitable recipes for me, but there just weren't many I'd want to try.
Thank you to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I really like the Whole Smiths. I have their other cookbook and use it regularly. This cookbook continues that tradition of excellence. I will absolutely be making Chai spice mix for friends and family as Christmas presents. The one minute mayo is perfection. The Sheet Pan Beef Jerky is now a staple in our house. My favorite chapter was 5 ingredients or less. It's worth buying this book for that chapter alone. I cannot say enough about the Chicken Mole instant pot recipe. I tell everyone about how good it is. Buy this cookbook.
As someone with Celiac Disease this cookbook is heaven! So many incredible gluten free recipes with tons of other variations available such as dairy free, vegan, etc. I already tried my hand at making the chicken and pesto stuffed sweet potatoes and they turned out incredible. I’m looking forward to making the gluten free blueberry hand pies this weekend. Overall this is a worthy addition to any chef’s cookbook collection :) Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy.
This is a nice cookbook full of healthy food options and I would try some of the recipes. It's well organized and easy to follow and the photos look pretty good. I like cooking healthy foods at home and I like trying new recipes sometimes. The cooking tips in the begging are very useful! I didn't really find a recipe that would make me want to cook it right now though. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
After her first cookbook I was very excited for this book to come out. Unfortunately this book was a huge disappointment. The recipes are ok but nothing really exceptional. Basically what you see on every "clean eating" blogger's site these days. Additionally the designation of nut free is used incorrectly and many recipes that have that designation do in fact have some type of nut in them. If you are trying to decide between her two cookbooks do yourself a favor and get the first.
I thought this was such a great cookbook. I love how she talked about how she got into cooking for her family and all the recipes she created for this book. I think the recipes looked amazing. A lot of them dairy and gluten free friendly. I even wrote down some of her recipes to try and see how they turned out.
I really enjoyed this cookbook. I found it easy to read and very well laid out. The tips are also very helpful. There are a lot of recipes I am looking forward to trying and I can see easily becoming staples in my home.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Michelle Smith’s cookbooks are such a help to me and my family! With a number of food sensitivities, her recipes give help and inspiration for accommodating these otherwise frustrating restrictions. This is another great one!
This was my introduction into The Whole Smiths and their recipes. The cookbook looks easy to use and has some great photos. The recipes seem healthy and easy to make for families. There are quite a few recipes that I hope to try. Thanks to Netgalley for this review copy.
I really loved the layout and handy tips in this cookbook. I think several of the recipes are fantastic and there is enough variety to appeal to most everyone. I loved it enough that I feel confident it would make a great gift for any cook.
This wonderful cookbook offers a variety of recipes and substitutions for family friendly meals. I love all of the ideas and the beautiful photos that accompany the recipes. I would recommend this cookbook for anyone looking to change up their recipes and meals.
There are some keepers like Carnitas Ramen Noodles on p. 203. The basic Carnitas Mas Rapido recipe is awesome, and I'm making it again. The other one that we're loving is Beverly's Chicken Adobo on p. 141 because you won't find it elsewhere. It's superb! Enjoy!
I am unsure of what diet this is aimed at meat but no dairy unless it’s cheeses, no wheats or grains most of the time. Still have a different take on meals.
