The mystery of the missing golden egg unfolds during an Easter egg hunt in this sweet board book.
In this sturdy novelty board book, we crack the case of the missing golden egg. Where did it go? Did someone take it? In the end, readers will find out what happened to this very special egg. Keep an eye on all of the furry, fuzzy animals on the farm!
I like the functionality of the book, where you can see through to the end of the book from the front cover—it reminds me of Chris Ferrie’s “8 Little Planets”. That’s really the only compliment I might extend to the book. The rest feels like a simpleminded scavenger hunt. Holiday children’s books already have a pretty bad track record in my eyes, seeing as most of them are meant to be marketed en masse during very specific times of year. The book itself feels like it was written by a computer algorithm rather than a human mind. And the revelation at the end—that the golden egg had been snatched up by a baby chick who “wanted it all for themselves”…
I need help understanding precisely how a tiny, baby chick manages to lug a golden egg five times its size into a chicken coop? To what end does this theft serve? The book credits the chick wanting the egg for themselves… but why? Not to mention the added detail of the bunny’s bow tie stolen by another chick in the same hen house. These derelict birds are a nuisance on this property, and mother hen should be ashamed of herself.
Joking aside, I really don’t like reading this to my daughter. It feels condescending, even for my one year old.

Audience: EC, lap babies Curriculum Connections: Easter, colors, verbs and prepositions
This seek and find board book asks the reader to search each page for the missing golden egg. The concentric egg-shaped die cut throughout the book doesn't add anything to the story, nor does it make much sense and most pages.
Kudos to the author for using a variety of verbs and prepositions to help young readers learn and use their meaning (inside, on, in, by, under, floating, sitting, hiding).
The colors and illustrations are inviting, the Easter theme is consistent, but there is no connection between the book's format and it's message.
