Yes, I read another Star Wars book Two back to back. I don’t know... been in a Star Wars mood lately I guess.

But this one was super cool. The first volume was ok. It set up General Ackbar and his Calamari dudes (I kid you not, look up their species) as an explanation for all the ships the Rebellion has, but, again, the second one was better than the first. The last volume was incredible. There were so many prequel nods, and again, when you grow up with the prequels all around you, it feels so nostalgic every time they are referenced nowadays. Basically, Vader wants a big castle to fit his growing ego inside so he goes to Mustafar (of all places) and hires this lady to make it for him. But she doesn't do a good enough job so he uses this old relic so communicate with this dead Sith dude to make him the castle instead. As you do.

So the conclusion I still come to is that someone needs to just give Vader his wife back. At least then he has someone to cry to.

So this is a continuation of a graphic novel series that I started last year. I remember being mildly impressed with the story and the tightrope walk in the balance of the titular character. I mean, it’s not easy hanging out with Darth Vader during his most Vader-y time and still sympathize with him. I liked the initial volume so decided to give this one a chance. While it’s not emotionally investing and it’s not addictingly captivating, it’s starting to become essential reading in order to tie the prequel trilogy to the original series. We get glimpses and insights into Vader’s arc enough so that it makes the character more fully fleshed out, which is a tall order to do for the Dark Lord.

The plot continues Vader’s mission of finding and killing all the Jedi which were able to evade Order 66. These are minor skirmishes compared to the overarching plot of the attack on Mon Cala as well as Vader constructing his fortress on Mustafar. These by far are the more developed plot lines while tracking Jedi seem to be peppered into it from time to time. While I appreciated the attack on Mon Cala as a way for the Empire to initially flex its might, the real heart of the story, and the most compelling plot, is on Mustafar. While I didn’t feel that Lord Momin was particularly fleshed out as a character, I still saw him as really one of the only legitimate challengers so far for Darth Vader, aside from Tarkin, but the reader already knows how that relationship plays out.

The structure of the volume is constructed by the various series being collected as well as a last annual to conclude it. The rendering, again, is just okay. I’m not thrilled by it, but it’s not amatuer either. I still don’t fully like the way the Emperor is portrayed, but I think it’s significantly better than the original volume if memory serves. The way the comics are constructed isn’t groundbreaking, but at the same time, we’re not really here for that. We’re here for the story.

The two characters that really stand out in this volume are Tarkin and Momin. Darth Vader, while there was some struggle in the beginning, is largely to his evil, murdery self at this point. One of my favorite parts in the volume was the cat and mouse game that Vader requests from Tarkin. He literally has Tarkin and a few Bounty Hunters try to track and kill him on some remote planet. Slowly and methodically, Vader dispatches the group until it’s just Tarkin standing and while Tarkin appears to have the upper hand at the end, Vader’s might is still felt. I really appreciated this section because it comes from Tarkin’s perspective and shows how he was probably the second most deadliest soldier in the Emperor’s arsenal. That and his thought process for invading and capturing Mon Cala go a fairly long way in showing how intelligent, methodical, and deadly Tarkin was. It also goes to show the initial relationship that Vader has with Tarkin. While the original series made it feel like there might be a mutual respect and understanding between the two, it’s really just the Emperor’s directive to have Vader report to Tarkin that starts it all off. Maybe they’ll develop that relationship further, but so far it’s only acrimonious.

The other character that really stuck out was Lord Momin, mostly because they wiped out most of the legacy Dark Lords of the Sith, and therefore he is official. While he could have been developed a little better, he was still an interesting character. I appreciated how he felt like he was an artist and his only patron was the dark force itself. I thought his scheme to create a work of art filled with the frozen, petrified faces in an entire city was particularly macabre. I guess he was just okay because he’s immediately caught and then dies when his ship explodes. That was rather anticlimactic. Also, while I did appreciate that he haunts his helmet, the helmet itself wasn’t particularly spooky or memorable. I thought it was interesting how he is the one that really designed Vader’s castle and the thought process behind putting it on Mustafar other than it’s the place where he lost to Obi Wan (aka, it’s a dark side nexus that Vader thinks can open a portal to the dead to see Padme).

I also liked the dream sequence when Vader is initially knocked out from the explosion at the castle before Lord Momin returns to life. The way he’s depicted, almost godlike with the internal conflict within him externally represented, was a very intriguing visual. There were hints and glimpses of more artistic license taken, but they surely aren't the majority of how the graphic novel ultimately looks and feels. When they do come, however, they are appreciated.

All in all, I appreciate this graphic novel and do think it’s solidified itself as essential reading for filling in the gap between the prequel and original trilogies. Taken as a whole, they help to layer the characters we’ve only really been with for a few hours on the scene. For me, this series helped me better understand Tarkin, which was appreciated. The addition of Lord Momin was interesting, if ultimately not as rewarding as one would hope, but maybe it’s because he’s the new canon so there’s a lot riding on it. The creation of Vader’s castle on Mustafar was the most intriguing plot, but the assault on Mon Cala was okay. It’s greatly helped by showing off Tarkin’s military prowess and cunning. The depiction of Vader remains more static than the first volume, but the story’s intriguing so it’s forgivable. If there are more, I will most certainly pick them up!

These Darth Vader stories are so good. Theyre my favorite from the star wars comics. They perfectly encapsulate what makes Darth Vader a compelling character. He's a badass villain just being an all around bad guy. These comics explore how his thought process is without flat out explaining it. There's a lot of mystery to him, but also development. They encourage the reader to feel like they're learning who this character is while having those awesome villain scenes. The art is great as well as well as the action scenes.

Was really impressed by this series, really got a great grasp of Vader’s character and helped expand on his transition from Anakin Skywalker. It was also great to see a believable relationship between him and the emperor, actually got to see a bit of teaching rather than just the emperor beating on Vader which was good. I felt the final few issues lacked, particularly with a new character amongst the sith but otherwise very strong and worth checking out.

I took a little more time with this second volume because I wanted to savor all the Darth-Vader-y goodness and it was indeed so very good! The arc on Mon Cala with king Lee-Char was really excellent - a bit more densely political compared to the stories from the first volume, in a good way! The flashback to the clone wars knocked me DEAD.

The mustafar section was also very cool, but I feel like I wanted it to play out slightly differently? The whole Momin thing was odd..., and the actual mechanism of resurrection was a bit vague. I loved the series of flashbacks (and possibly flashforwards?) showing all the pivotal moments in Anakin's life (I just watched clone wars and rebels so the stuff with Ahsoka.... big feels), but I'm not really clear on why he couldn't resurrect Padme. Having said that, I think it makes a ton of sense that his inability to resurrect her and finally letting go of that was what finalized his transition from Anakin to Darth Vader.

The annual was cool and made me realize I need to rewatch Rogue One!

I loved this whole comic so much. My first journey into Star Wars canon comics but definitely not my last!

This volume is the BEST Star Wars trade paperback I've ever read and the series as a whole (volume 1) is also probably my favorite (along with the Republic series that chronicles the Clone Wars). I can't get too much into the why without spoiling it, but if you're a Vader fan then this is a must read. The illustrations are gorgeous and the writing makes it feel like a Star Wars movie. The tone is also appropriately dark and doesn't PG elements down needlessly.

I absolutely love this run of Darth Vader comics. The artwork is mind blowing and the storylines are always interesting and give added insight to Vader’s continue decline into the dark side. I’m always impressed with an original story about a character can weave in a lot of other plot lines either from the movies or the tv shows and make it feel effortless. Loved this comic!

Tohle je opět velmi povedená kniha. Charles Soule jede. Darth Vadera musíte obdivovat i nenávidět zároveň a Soule tyto emoce umě zprostředkovává.

Napsal ho Chuck Wendig a nakreslil Leonard Kirk.

Much as it may seem incongruous, there is a very funny section in this book. Dark humor to be sure, but hilarious nonetheless. I mention this as I could not think of anyway to make this saga better, and Soule had to toss this in. Inspired may be the word I am looking for. Incredible, mesmerizing, and outstanding are some other adjectives that could work too. All in all, this is a spectacular conclusion to the story arc set out in volume 1.

Here we follow Vader's rise to prominence, watch his continued disregard for anything that breathes, and are given a glimpse into what drives him. There are Easter eggs a plenty, both from the movies and the canon novels, along with some terrific guest appearances. Having said all that, there is one, no two, things that niggle at me. One is his eventual fight with Obi-Wan and two, his eventual confrontation with Luke. The Vader we see here is virtually an unstoppable force. He would have gone through an aged Obi-wan in about a heartbeat and Luke would have stood no chance. I am sure I am not the first to notice this and I am certain there are enough fan theories out there to sink a Death Star, but the fact remains.

Still, do not let this dissuade you. Volume 2 is first rate story telling with great art and a story that grabs you by the throat (Little force joke there) and does not let you go. One for your Library for sure! Enjoy!

For me, these compendiums are the absolute best. For all my life, I only knew of what the first movies ever gave of Vader/Anakin. I’d always wondered, but then the rest of th movies came out. Though they gave (way too much) information, I appreciated their being made. It’s not until I got to these books that I began to really get to know the actual machinations of the mind of Lord Vader. How he isn’t only driven to madness by his anger but also by an undying love that just won’t burn away.

This book’s illustrations are amazing and allow you to feel the true grit of his workings. How he aims to please, but he’s also hesitant in his actions, with good reasons. How he takes charge, and despises those who he has to charge for… a really good viewing and read. I’m on Volume 3 now.

The Story You Always Wanted

Covering the period between Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One this is even better than the first volume. Taking you right up to the start of Rogue One this volume takes you on a journey that fills in the blanks and dives deeper into the bad characters you love. Vader is completely on point from the perspective of a fan of the original trilogy and Rogue One (with the rest of the films being disappointments of varying magnitude). This does NOT disappoint.

Outstanding story, outstanding art

I’ve been reading comic books for only a few years, but these two Vader compilations are some of the best. The art is beautiful even when it is almost frightening. The stories are well paced and make sense. Really worth a read if you like Star Wars or comics

Fantastic. Stories of Vader hunting Jedi in between episodes 3 and 4. The story of mon cala joining the rebellion. Great Vader/palpatine interactions. A crazy resurrected sith artist. Tarkin hunting Vader. And finally, Vader searching for Padme in the afterlife. Amazing stuff.

Some epic scenes. I really liked the astral projection of Darth Vader and how chaotic and strong it looked. The construction of the fortress on Mustafar almost turned into a Monty Python skit. The whole scene was a neat concept.

Darth Vader - Dark Lord of the Sith Vol. 2 contains issues from Darth Vader 13 through 25 (2017 run) and one of the annuals. These are beautifully illustrated and excellently written. I love being able to see what Darth Vader experienced and interacted with anybody he came in contact with. We also get to see how he made his home on Mustafar. This was an awesome read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Art continues to be amazing, and Soule shows that he really understands how to handle Vader without losing the sense of horror he's meant to inspire. Some of the story definitely gets weird, as Star Wars likes to do (especially in comics).

Druhá časť Vaderovskej série, ktorú vydal Egmont znova nesklamala.
Vader je ešte učeň, a poslušne plní Cisárove rozmary.
Nieže by ostatné príbehy neboli dobré, ale Pevnosť Vader je sakra majstrovské (emotívne) dielo.
