A widow seeking revenge. A mysterious woman in red. A tournament to the death. When combatants enter Dead Legends, their lives become an adrenaline-heavy struggle for survival. But one fighter, Yan Nakamura, has entered with an agenda, and being named champion is the last thing on her mind. This martial arts throwback series delivers brutal battles, hidden legacies, a cast of gritty characters, and a bloody race against time.
Action-packed, revenge-fueled, beautifully illustrated martial arts fun! I absolutely didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did, but I’m a sucker for old martial arts movies and tournaments, so this one was right up my alley. I picked this up after chatting with the artist, Gavin Smith, at a convention last year and I’m glad I did. Looking forward to reading the sequel!
'Dead Legends' by James Maddox with art by Gavin Smith was a nice surprise of a graphic novel.
A tournament gathers skilled martial artists. Each entrant must have a special coin to enter. A mysterious woman joins the tournament, and we learn her motive is revenge for the death of her husband. She harbors other secrets too. Combatants battle each other over days to detrmine the winner.
I had a lot of fun reading this. It's full of tropes from martial arts movies and games. It's also pretty violent. The art conveys tons of action. I liked this fun, quick read.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from A Wave Blue World in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
Terrible name. Dead Legends. Terrible. Also the cover of the trade volume is terrible. That being said the story, the dialogs and the inside visuals are pretty good. There are some weaker panels, but mostly they look great. The fights are also visually pleasing and the anatomy is easy on the eyes. I never cared for martial arts so I had a preconception that this is going to bore me, but it did end up being entertaining. No wish to read the next volume though.
