Look Backward to Move Forward

Our first introduction to Iain is his suffering the consequences of stubborn refusal to arrive at Hathaway House in an ambulance. Ironically, he applied for transfer to Hathaway House because he believed the VA hospital rehab unit he had been in felt that his current progress was the best he could expect to achieve. His class-clown behavior had resulted in a less-than-stellar reputation for him there. He hadn’t had to work hard, and thus he didn’t really know what he was capable of. Having heard reports that a lot of patients with injuries as serious as his were healing 100% at Hathaway House and walking out of there strong and healthy, he was motivated to work hard and change his ways. Instead, he spent some pretty painful days driving in his friend’s big pickup truck, literally regressing his recovery level by at least a couple of weeks, starting with full bed rest until he could be fully assessed. Robin, the vet-tech working with Stan and the animal patients downstairs, had seen Iain’s arrival and the pain he tried so hard to hide. Something in the way he hid his pain the same way the injured animals do (able to be seen only in their eyes) drew her to him. When they had occasion to chat in the dining room after Iain was finally able to get himself there, she found it easy to talk to him about also being relatively new to Hathaway House, something they had in common. As time passes, Iain has to adjust and trust, to minimize his stubbornness and step up his perseverance, in order to push through his intense suffering after physiotherapy sessions. Robin realizes that each of them needs to recognize long-past unacknowledged issues that are still inhibiting the progress they want to, but cannot seem to, achieve – and that neither is ready to talk about them with each other nor the therapists available to them. Robin picks up two journals that she hopes might help both Iain and herself recall past events and feelings for some self-analysis to understand their obstacles. What I liked best about this part of the plot line was that each one’s “journal journey” visited emotions they would probably not have linked to their current situations. I hope that readers benefit from this idea and also the ongoing message in the Hathaway House series that even brave and strong warriors have times when they need help to do the work of healing. All in all, a really great read!

Iain was a bit surprised when he received the acceptance to Hathaway House. He does believe it's the change he needs to make any real progress. However he makes a major mistake by having his friend Bruce drive him instead of traveling by ambulance. This causes a rather large setback before serious rehab can begin.

Robin sees Iain's arrival and can tell he's in pain, she doesn't let him see her, she knows he would be embarrassed to be seen at his most vulnerable. Being a Vet Tech in the Veterinary Clinic below the rehab center is a dream come true for Robin. The job comes with lodging, and meals and a great salary.

One of the things Robin likes to do is bring animals up to visit with the human patients. It during one of those visits she meets Iain.

Now Robin and Iain have an up and down kind of relationship. She wants to help, and he's not seeing his progress.

I love that we see much more of the animals in this one. They always lift my spirits.

This is an interesting journey for both Iain and Robin. They both have things to work out and for him it's the added physical stuff too.

It's amazing how Dale manages to show us something different in the lines of recovering in each of these books, and adds in that special romance for good measure.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Fantastic!

Another sweet and heartwarming story! I love Hathaway House and its cast of endearing characters! Each and everyone care so much about the residents and take extra care to see that they progress and find their way to a healthier life with their journey there.

I enjoy the aspect of the veterinary clinic that is part of the program. Animals love unconditionally and don’t care what kind of baggage we bring. Robin has that loving nature for the animals and cares that they have an engaging life with plenty of space and sunshine to keep them healthy and happy. Her caring nature also expands to the people at the house. She is compassionate and caring about all of them, but one in particular, Iain, tugs at her heart.

Iain has almost given up hope of ever improving beyond his condition now. With his medical team and the supporting staff behind him, he finds more encouragement than he ever expected to achieve the progress he craves. He also finds that he responds positively to Robin and her caring heart. She knows him, on the inside, and knows what he is thinking and feeling.

This story is sweet, inspiring and tugs at your heart strings, a must-read for sure! I loved it!

Iain is a book in the Hathaway House series which focuses on the rehab of wounded veterans. The book looks at Ian's physical injuries as well as his mental needs. I liked how after Iain was beginning to give up since he didn't see any improvements, he is shown before and after pictures and realizes how much his improvement. I think that this can be applied to anyone trying to make changes. Sometimes it hard to see how small steps lead to big changes. I liked that the book also dealt with the mental aspect of recovery. All of this with a little romance, makes this a feel good story.

When Iain MacLeod, a navy SEAL, stepped on an IED he knew that life as he knew it would cease, as always, he put on a cheerful face and joked about but this was just a front that he always used to cover his fears.
Having spent many months in a centre with hundreds of others just like him, having reconstructive surgery but not seeing any difference he made the big decision to apply to Hathaway House,a rehabilitation centre that treats it's patients holistically.
Robin Caruthers , a vetinary tech, was escaping a failed relationship when she went to work in the animal section of Hathaway house, Dani, the owner, had a great belief that contact with animals could help with the healing process.
Iain and Robin soon became friends, could it become more that that ? this was Hathaway House.... she introduced him to the animals, which he had always loved, especially the horses.
Robin and Iain were both fighting their own demons, her the self doubt after her partner cheated on her and him his life changing injuries, why could everyone else see improvement but he couldn't, Robin taught him that he had a disability, he was not disabled.
I love the way that every member of the teams at Hathaway house are dedicated to healing these injured veterans, even Dennis the chef who makes sure that they eat the correct diet. I love the way Dale Mayer writes about the psychological issues as well as the physical ones that these vets face.
This is a standalone book but the author gently leads into the next story and I can't wait.

Iain MacLeod is recovering from devastating injuries from an IED. He was the only one in the vehicle so he was the only one injured for which he is thankful. But at the hospital, he is in he has hit a wall. His doctors are telling him his injuries may prevent him from getting a prosthetic and he might as well accept that he may not be physically stronger than where he is now. He doesn't believe that and knows that Hathaway House will be a fresh start for him.

Robin Carruthers is a vet tech that works in the veterinary clinic on the ground level of Hataway house. She has only been there for a couple of months and while outside during a break, she watches as Iain arrives and she is inexplicably drawn to him. When they finally meet she becomes a supportive friend and confidant to Iain. She has a new-age vibe about her and she loves animals. Sometimes she understands them more than people.

Both Iain and Robin have things to work through before they can explore what is happening between them and if they have a future together. Of course, they are helped along in their journey to recovery and self-discovery by the wonderful staff at Hathaway House.

I love this series and the animals are just as important to the story as the characters. I find myself wishing there was a place like Hathaway house in the real world. These stories are about healing the mind and the body and with a little luck, the heart as well. The stories are inspiring and they tug at the heartstrings. I find myself wishing I had on the many animals in these stories. I hope this series will continue on and on and one day maybe Shane will find love.

This series, “Hathaway House,” by Dale Mayer is very different from her usual romantic suspense novels.

Hathaway House is a rehabilitation place for military people who have severe injuries. It is the ideal rehab center with the best personnel, the best equipment and the best conditions. It also includes an animal hospital and shelter downstairs which gives both the residents and the animals a chance to intermingle.

This particular book is about Iain. Iain is not happy with his physical therapy or by the progress he is has made in his current location. He is very depressed, because they claim that it is time that he accepts his current condition and move on. Therefore, he decides to move to Hathaway House hoping that he will see more progress. And it is there that he meets Robin, his romantic interest, who works with the animals as a vet tech.

In the rest of this book, this author gives the reader a chance to get inside Iain’s head as he attempts to come to terms with his life-changing injuries. It also opens our eyes to the pain and suffering these men or women endure during their recovery times. Throughout this novel, Ms. Dale shares with the reader all of the different emotions that an injured soldier experiences.

I love this book because it opens the reader’s eyes to the realities of a soldier’s life when he is severely injured.

Another heartwarming read with another injured vet who comes to Hathaway house to heal his injuries he suffered and while there not only heal his physical injuries but also the ones no one else can see. Iain makes the transfer to Hathaway house hoping to get progress but sets himself back when his trip there takes more out of him than he realized. Once he’s finally ready to do the hard work, he meets Robin a vet tech who works there and he enjoys spending time with her and so does she. When Iain gets in a slump, Robin offers him an outlet which he accepts and thrives in writing all his thoughts and feelings down. But Robin is having a more difficult time taking her own advice and it may put a damper on their budding relationship...can she heal as well.
A great read with great characters I couldn’t help but fall for once again. I liked that Robin had her own struggles and wasn’t perfect, needing some healing of her own along with Iain. I LOVE these reads, the journey, the healing, the advice, the characters and of course the no drama or no OW drama. Heartwarming stories of struggles of physical and emotional pain and learning to move forward with the best of yourself.

Determined to be where he wanted to be with his recovery, how that Iain MacLeod has been accepted as a patient into Hathaway House he knows he has a chance as he will get a new team with new professionals and methods. Vet tech Robin Carruthers works in the busy vet clinic at Hathaway House and meets Iain where she becomes his biggest cheerleader. However, as she sees Iain growing in many ways she is just standing still and making no progress with any issues she might have in her past. Can she find a way to sort everything out and will they find their way to the HEA they both deserve?

This was a sweet story that looked at some detail at the kinds of healing that are needed after any disability - both mental and physical. I loved the way that Robin was able to support Iain and some of the great suggestions that she came up with (something that might help us all). Well written and easy to read, this was a lovely story that started as a light read but actually turned into something far deeper. You do not need to read the previous books in the series to enjoy this and there is no sexual content.

Normally I don't read books that tug on my heart but this series is different and I keep coming back for more because it also makes me happy. I enjoy the base setting of Hathaway House and the idea of unselfish people who are tuned in to the lives of others. There are life lessons in these books that apply to everyone not just the injured. I need to be reminded of these lessons as I'm human and forget even the basics like smiling. The animals are a wonderful addition and who can not smile at the llama named lovely and the horse named Apple who have been friends since they were born? Iain challenges are real and the explanation of how he handles them is well done. Robin has issues with her past, some of which most of us have experienced in one way or another. She's not injured physically but there are other reasons to carry pain.
I really enjoyed this story and will come back for more! The epilogue has Iain talking to a friend trying to get him to apply to Hathaway House to work on his recovery. Jaden sounds as though he will do just that and I'm looking forward to this tale as well!

Hathaway House is for our wounded warriors where the care is above what the VA can provide and is what each or our wounded deserve in the real world. This is Iains story and can be read as a stand alone. Iain has achieved all he can with the VA and has applies at Hathaway House. He is accepted and begins his journey. There are doctors, physical therapist, psychologists, pet therapy, everything Hathaway House can provide to help the wounded. Robin is a vet tech. How cool is this premise??? Helping the wounded warriors and wounded animals. My heart just swells with this, can it happen in the real world? Is something like this in the process? Robin is single again an dealing with her own issues but is there to cheer Iain on. This is truly a feel good, based on harsh reality in our war torn world today. Issues are dealt with a deft touch that teaches us (without our realizing it) as we cheer on Iains progress and mourn with the set backs. Thank you for another read that entertains me, moves me and makes me think. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions!

I absolutely love this series. This particular book catches hold of you from the beginning and keeps you reading until the very end. I love that even though it is in a book, Hathaway House is there for the vets who need it. Wouldn't our world be wonderful if we took care of our injured and/or disabled vets this way? The main character in this book has to come to terms with his disability and has help from someone who also has things to work through before thinking about entering into a relationship. They both help each other, a lot of times unknowingly. I love that this series focuses on the all around help that vets need including not just physical, but also mentally. It makes me wonder why we cannot do this for our veterans. Yes it may be expensive but look what these people have given for us! I also love that there are animals included in the series and that a lot of times the animals help the veterans to work through their pain and their psychological issues. And, some of the animals are disable too! Love love love this series and look forward to the next book!

Fearing his recovery from wounds received in an IED blast has reached it's limit in his current facility, Navy SEAL Lain MacLeod applied and was accepted for further treatment at Hathaway House.

Robin Carruthers left a relationship and accepted a position as a Veterinary Technician with the clinic located in one wing of Hathaway House. Helping animals to recover in this beautiful environment might help her to heal from the hurt she carries inside.

As Lain and Robin work on healing themselves, they are drawn to each other despite the insecurities that could keep them apart. Little did they know how much help they would have.

Dani, Shane, Dennis and Stan are part of the staff who go above and beyond to care for their patients, whether in the treatment rooms, the dining facility, the pool, the Vet Clinic or outside in the pastures.

Tucked into the green countryside, Hathaway House offers its own kind of healing magic. The staff, wounded warriors and animals create a place that will live on in the readers' hearts.

These books are so inspirational, the pain and suffering of the injured, damaged patients not just the physical but the emotional just breaks my heart. But then they start finding some purpose, extra strength and the will to really start finding life again and love, which helps cheer me up again. The emotions are raw, stripped right back by the therapy and by just being at this fantastic rehab hospital, even by seeing the animals and how they deal with their own injuries. Iain is no exception, he has suffered so much pain in his healing to date but knows he needs more to be better than he is, his chance comes and he is determined to do whatever is needed even with a slow start. Building a budding friendship into a relationship plus the animals and caring staff soon have him improving even more than he ever expects. I love this series and each and every character that gets their own book and their recovery and love, each deserves it and more, I only wish the real life vets had even half of this help and support with their own very real struggles. Fabulous.

Iain by Dale Mayer
Hathaway House Series Book Nine
Iain MacLeod was going to start over. No more class clown to hide his pain. He was going to start his new beginning at Hathaway House. At the VA hospital, he was told he was as good as he'd ever be. He didn't believe that...but once at Hathaway House, he allowed the doubts in. Especially since traveling by truck with his friend Bruce instead of by ambulance set him back.

Robin Carruthers noticed when Iain first came in. The pain in his face just getting out of a truck. She worked as a vet tech with Stan and in the few weeks she'd been at Hathaway House, she hadn't had a lot of contact with the recovering men and women. But seeing Iain that first time cemented into her what they must be going through.

I love this series. It's on the sweeter side and shows struggles that are probably very real in the folks who come home broken from war. And I hope there are really places like Hathaway House for our heroes.

While Iain was the class clown at the VA hospital, Iain wants a fresh start when goes to the Hathaway House. Unfortunately, Iain chooses to have a friend drive him rather than arrive in an ambulance which sets his recovery back a few weeks. Veterinarian Tech Robin witnesses his arrival and admires his grit while empathizing with his pain. Recovery for Iain is more than physical recovery. Robin's friendship with Iain helps him look beyond his physical impediments. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I thought that Iain and Robin's relationship was very realistic. I liked that their deeper discussions which drew them together and helped their healing. This book also help me reflect on what could be holding me back. I really enjoyed this read.

Iain is the ninth book from Dale Mayer’s Hathaway House series. Iain McLeod has transferred to Hathaway House looking for further help with his injuries. Iain meets Robin Carruthers when she visits with Hopper, a giant rabbit. Robin is a veterinary assistant to Stan who runs a Vet Clinic on the first floor of Hathaway House. Every story tells how each military person was injured. A great read that not only documents the amount of effort taken by the numerous staff members involved in rehabilitation but also the mental and physical stress of the client to improve their health status. Iain had to dig deep in endurance and perseverance to achieve the best possible outcome. A very sweet romance as Iain and Robin get to know each other. A very enjoyable series. Looking forward to reading about Iain’s friend Jaden when a bed becomes available.

Awwww I just want to hug this book. I love this series from Hathaway house and I have been waiting to long for the next instalment. Iain was so sweet when we were introduced to him but he did put his treatment back when he did his journey by truck with his best friend, Bruce, rather than by ambulance.

Robin is the vet tech working with all of the injured ammonia’s and those already on site. She was a sweet character who always seemed to have insightful saying to get people to think. As we see is Iain’s treatment and his mindset, we also see his friendship with Robin goes from strength to strength. Iain must get through his mindset to figure out a future. A awesome bit of writing and one I am sure I will read again. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Iain is looking forward to going to Hathaway House for a fresh start and a new beginning for the rest of his life. He is beyond stubborn though and it takes alot to get him to look inside himself to possibly find what is blocking him from seeing his progress.. Robin, the new vet tech, is connecting with Iain on a personal level and going on this internal journaling journey with him. It is not easy for either one of them to admit to themselves what is holding them back, much less to anyone else. However, once the internal locks are open, amazing things start to happen. Wonderful, clean book with terrific HEA.

I love the Hathaway house stories. Each touches you in a deep way.Understanding the physical and emotional things out veterans have to endure will bring you a deeper understanding of their sacrifices.I love Lain and Robins story.Lain having gone through so much and then the so called woman he was with before he was injured well what I want to call her isn;t for polite company. There are so many twists and turns to this story will keep you riveted until the very last page and leave you begging for more.I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes and makes you feel their emotions and their pain.I can hardly wait to see whats next by this multi talented author.

After a career ending and life changing injury Iain’s recovery has stalled and he knows that his best option for further recovery is Hathway House, however the first lesson he must learn is that accepting help doesn’t make you weak it shows your strength.

Robin works with the animals at the Vet clinic. She meets Iain upon his arrival and is able to see more than the happy outgoing persona he shows to those around him. What starts out as a friendship develops into something much deeper, but will they allow the pain from the past to destroy the future they could have together?

This is a story about two people who with the help of each other overcome the pasts that is affecting their present.

I really liked how you felt how much Iain felt like he was stuck in a rut and needed to come around to the new way of thinking and embrace the help around him, while Robin had to learn what she thought she needed for a career isn't always what will make her happy. The fact we got a lot more time with the animals and in the vets was fun as they are also a big part of Hathaway House and when Iain got on the horse it was happy claps and a sweet moment. I just flove these book as each story is different but bettering oneself and doing the best you can always shines through.

An awesome Hathaway House read with characters who could be your friends and a story that immediately pulled me in and had me totally immersed in all that was happening from the first page to the last. I really liked the attraction and undeniable chemistry between Iain MacLeod who goes to Hathaway House for rehab for his serious injuries that occurred when he drove is truck over an IED and Robin Carruthers who works in the veterinary clinic. Ms. Mayer never disappoints whatsoever and I am looking forward to the next book from this gifted author. Iain, knew about Hathaway house, Had read about it and was intrigued. He had filled out many an application then tossed them away. This time he has filled it out electronically. He has done all he can do and doesn't really think there is anything anyone can do. Robin had a life crisis and took a chance to work as a vet tech with Hathaway House. she loves it there. Seeing Iian arrive, she is wondering what his story is and is intrigued despite herself. This is another great wounded warrior story and kept me engrossed the whole time. I love these books. Iain, a wounded SEAL with a determination to improve and strengthen, skips the ambulance and uses his own plan to reach Hathaway House. He quickly learns that independence can work or can hamper. Progress, growth, underlying sources of strength and hidden wounds, a matter of perspective. The characters are colorful and resemble a strong family geared on healing those around them. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

This is the 9th book in the Hathaway House series, it is a standalone romance with plenty of heart. This series is really enjoyable, Hathaway House is a rehab facility that has a little something extra. The people who work there have the biggest kindest hearts and really make the patients feel welcome and loved which is what they need. When Iain arrives there, he is in a bad mental space but soon his outlook changes. He has a connection with Robin who works as a vet tech at the house and soon their friendship becomes deeper. Wonderful story!

This entry in the Hathaway House series is another winner. The characters are so caring and present the good side of people. We see the residents, in this case Iain progress to a new life and deal with their limitations. I especially liked the veterinary aspect of this and the animals showing their love. Robin's love for the animal and how she cares for them and Iain is endearing. Iain responds to Robin and her caring heart. A truly sweet romance.

Iain is the newest client at Hathaway House, and he is ready to progress in his recovery, but starts out rough with a truck ride to Hathaway House.. Alpha males are pretty stubborn after all.
Robin is a vet tech with a heart as big as Texas, but even she needs to look inside herself now and then.
What a wonderful story.. The recovery process is tough, but persistence pays off for everyone.
This is such a fantastic series. Loved my read!
