Whether it’s her sunny disposition, her gift of laughter, her wide-ranging talent, or all three, Judi Dench is loved by both the public and her professional peers. Her very name evokes an admiring response, both for her distinguished theater work and for her many memorable roles in movies like Mrs. Brown, Shakespeare in Love, and Iris, and as “M” in four James Bond films. Darling Judi: A Celebration of Judi Dench is a book of tributes by fellow actors, writers, and people of theater, film, and television, including playwright David Hare, actor Ian Richardson, and Scottish comedian and Mrs. Brown co-star Billy Connolly.
I adore Judi Dench, she's a fabulous actor as her play, tv and film credits show. This books was written by a variety of people who have worked with her over the years as a celebration for her 70th birthday.
I have found it difficult to read with all the writing styles and the various ways that people chose to reminisce which is why it has taken so long to read.
In the end I decided to only read the ones I could get into and ignore the ones I felt were too technical or pompous or more about the person writing than the actor herself.
A great idea for a celebration but I feel that many of the participants were too dry and factual.
Judi Dench is one of my favourite actresses and this book was compiled by a number of actors and actresses who have performed with her in London and Stratford theatres. It was written for her 70th birthday 10 years ago, and would be of far more meaning to people au fait with the performers and productions described in this book. Not being so fortunate, I have only given it 3 stars but there were some wonderful descriptions of her sense of fun and amazing interpretations of scripts she had to perform.
Brilliant book. A series of 'love letters' from actors and directors who've worked with Dame Judi Dench over the course of her career, collected together and presented to her in honour of her 70th birthday a few years ago. Fun read.
