Godfrey makes a point to live a quiet, unassuming life, mostly because vampires are a lot less likely to get dead that way. Finding a dead body in his yard is very much the last thing he needs, though he can't be entirely upset about the hot, scruffy detective assigned the case. The problem with humans, however, is that they don't know when to quit...
Megan is a long time resident of queer romance and keeps herself busy reading and writing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her wife and cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers and can be found all over the internet.
What on earth, Megan Derr? Possession by aliens that don't know how to write? This was so bad, it hurt to read by someone who's read somewhat over half a hundred titles by Derr. It was simply so ... clumsy. I couldn't even start with how bad it was, it's simply not worth the bother. Either it's something old from the starting days slapped into sale now or then I've no idea what's with it but not recommending and not purchasing more of this series. I guess I'll have to grab a sample first from now on when there's a new Derr. Astonishing to contemplate. Been a go to name, that is. And with me being an avid vampire genre reader, too! There was simply no charm to this whatsoever for me.
This was pretty cute for a supernatural mystery, and I liked the characters, but the relationship and plot went from zero to resolved in a ridiculously short span -- especially for interactions between an investigating officer and a reasonable suspect in a murder.
Megan Derr has been re-releasing all of her previous stories that were part of now-defunct LT3 anthologies... and I liked it *lol*. This is another cute story about a rather nerdy (and prefer to stay inside doing his translation and collects on DICTIONARY) vampire and a human detective. Though don't dismiss Godrey, the vampire though... he's still a strong vampire. I would love to see more of this series/universe. Because grumpy Godfrey is cute!
i found it while looking out for short stories but i think it's a little bit too short since their relationship and the case solution goes from 0 to done/perfect in a blink of a eye...also it felt like i was reading some 2016's fanfiction, which isn't bad but could've some improvement to be even better.
Pretty underwhelming for a Megan Derr short story. It felt as if the book started by setting up a mystery but then just had some side characters solve it quickly in the background. The action scenes lacked tension and drama, and the romance was equally underwhelming with very little chemistry and romantic development. By the end I was skimming and had lost interest.
Wait, so Channing and Paisley are twin vampires... which means what exactly?? I think I remember them being mirror images of each other... so they should be twin twins... But then in the library...
I-I always thought the twincest = wincest thing was a meme... It turns out I was the sweet summer child all along. yes, this is the only impression this short made on me. seriously, it's not a meme????
I've read a lot of books by Megan Derr, which I've absolutely loved. They've practically all been 5 stars. This one missed the mark by a LONG shot. Let's just say I'm glad this wasn't the first book I've read of hers, or else I wouldn't have touched another one.
I know it's a short story so there's this urgency to get the plot going, but MAN, it went way too fast, way too quickly. It was a bit disconcerting.
Also, one of the things I absolutely HATED about this book is the off-the-side twin incest. As a twin, this was absolutely disgusting. Even just imagining it made me want to put bleach in my eyes and then run myself over for good measure, just so I wouldn't have to keep picturing it. Just, UGH. No, no, no. I don't know if this is some sort of twin fetish or what, but I do know I want absolutely no part in it.
In the end, I wish I'd read the reviews first before embarking on this painful journey.
Godfrey an ancient vampire loves his languages and likes to have a settled life. A dead body on his lawn changes all that. A detective shows up at his door and Selby is a man who Godfrey decides is just his type. Murder, an almost murder, numbers that have gone awry, being beat to a pulp, werewolves gone bad and you have the makings for a really excellent short story. Now the second one needs to appear so that all us who want to follow this story can do so. I hope it is soon because I really like the characters and want to find out what happens. Megan, could you please write it so that we can catch up on Godfrey, Shelby and their friends?
Another short of Megan Derr I wish she'd put a little more time and effort in. There's enough material here for a story at least twice as long. And maybe that would answer a few questions: wouldn't a human detective have a reaction that is a little stronger than a gently raised eyebrow to things like brothers having sex and, I don't know, vampires and werewolves existing?
Its always interesting when humans come across Vampires- especially when they find themselves in the middle of an argument. When Shelby meets Godfrey, there's interest on both sides, but they have to sort out other problems before they can enjoy time together
I really like a lot of Derr's work, but this one didn't do it for me. The concept and writing flow are both fine - the bones of this book are good, in my opinion - but the story itself comes across somewhat murky and unfocused. Everything feels like it happens sort of haphazardly. The personalities of both MCs feel nebulous; I didn't feel like there was any sense of depth or consistency to either of them. The relationship seemed like it wanted to be slow burn but didn't have the time, resulting in the romantic element of the story feeling disjointed and sometimes awkward. I tend to think this concept would fare better if given the development time and pages of a full novel - there are some interesting elements here that I would love to see further explored .
A greatly fun short story! This has a bit of reversal of the classic cliches, with the vampire being a book nerd who wants to stay in and the human being the bad boy breaks the rules detective. With a dead body on his doorstep Godfrey finds the human police involved but realizing that it actually is a vampire crime he has to then kick the police out. The detective, Shelby, is not impressed to be kicked off his case and continues investigating which gets him in trouble. The two are great, sparking off each other with lots of sass and grumpiness. But at the same time the murder of a vampire spells trouble, especially when jealousy is involved. Very fun read!
The bones are good, but I have to say everything seemed a bit abrupt in terms of both the plot and relationship development. I know the brief nature of short stories and novellas can often leave the reader wishing the story was more fleshed out, but I don't think that's really the problem here. It reads almost as if chunks were removed from the story to meet a max word count, but then wasn't reworked to ensure it still read smoothly (particularly for the ending). I still enjoyed it, don't get me wrong (see the four star rating), but it was more than a little disappointing when all's said and done.
It hurts my soul to rate a Megan Derr this low and know I'm being generous. This is just... weird bad. It feels like a first quick draft that needed a much higher word count and several more passes before being passed off to the editor. Not sure if this is part of a more involved / broader series but I'm not a fan. First of all, the characters are shallow and the dialogue awful. The pacing is all wrong.
There’s not much to this story, and all of the mystery-solving is done off-page by other characters. If it were longer I think the characters and plot would have room to be more fleshed out. Also there was one sentence that involved parking a car in the parking lot of a park.
You learn about the characters, like you do in real life. Piece by piece is revealed and learned. You’re left with loose ends, so book 2 should be coming soon. Or mother will be very displeased!
Wow. I thought this must have been a re-released book, so I was shocked to see that it was first published in 2019. This is not the Derr writing I’ve come to enjoy. There was no character building, no plot. high was just glossed over. This is probably the worst story I’ve read from Derr.
an ok short read from Ms Derr. I liked Godfrey in his nerdy self but wanted more from the detective. Channing and Paisley were great too and then the twincest was thrown in and yeap not my cuppa. I won't be reading their book. Waiting to see what more comes from this world
I thought this was a cute, sexy short story involving an ancient vampire and a detective. The only complaint I have is either the story be longer or make it into a series.
Too-short mm romance vampire and human murder mystery also featuring werewolves. All the characters are clever and funny, and I'm sorry to see that there's no sequel yet.
2.5 stars - Too short for what it was attempting, I think. Lots of info dumping about how things work in this world where vampires are around, but mostly don’t turn humans. The vibes were good, but really needed more space to develop.
I'll leave the rating as it is, since my first review was spot on. I re-read this, simply because I never marked it as read in my e-reader and I didn't remember the story at all ><. ------
It was interesting with a touch of a side twincest thing going on and maybe an m/m/m situation with the twins. Anyways there was a bit too much going on for the length of this short story with not enough attention to the romance side and a bit slow at the start.
I'd be interested to read more if it ever happens, especially about the twins, especially since the vampiric history/characteristics are not the common.
