A Hope Callaghan “Cozy Mysteries” collection
Heart and Holliday Collection, a boxed set
Hope’s Cozy Mysteries are short mystery books that feature female leads that solve local crimes and other mysterious happenings. Of her books I have read so far, some have been murders, others have been robberies. There maybe other “mysteries” out there that I haven’t read yet. Her stories usually do not delve into the “blood, guts and sex” that some other authors try to shock you with.
Book 1 – Reindeer and Robberies
Cruise Ship Cozy Mystery Series - book 15
This one of the series of books that are set on a cruise ship. Our leading lady in this series is Millie Armati, a grandmother who started a second carrier as an assistant cruise director. After her P.I. husband dumped her for a younger woman, Millie answered an ad for the position to get away from things for a bit. Needless to say, she fell in love with the job, and the handsome Captain, who she married.
Her best friend on the ship is Annette Delacroix, the Director of Food and Beverage. Annette has a bit of a mysterious past that equipped her with certain skills that prove to be very useful in crime cracking. Plus being a character doesn’t hurt.
The last coconspirator in the crime fighting trio is “Cat” Wellington, who runs the gift shop between investigations.
These three, cause a few more grey hairs for the Head of Security; Millie’s boss, and her husband.
In this story, the Christmas season has fallen on the cruise ship industry. Because of that there are the usual seasonal changes to be made to keep the programs fresh for the passengers. This brings about the “reindeer” part, and human nature provides the “robberies”.
Book 2- Dash for Cash
Garden Girls Cozy Mystery - book 18
Here we have Gloria Rutherford, a widowed grandmother that has married a retired policeman.
Lucy Carlson is the tomboy type likes hunting, camping, shooting
Dorothy Jenkins owns Dot’s Restaurant with her husband, the local gathering place for the “Garden Girls”
Margaret Hanson is the quiet one of the group.
Ruth Carpenter is the local Postmaster, officially, unofficially she is the local “spymaster”. She has acquired a collection of interesting equipment to that end.
And then there is Andrea Malone, the youngest of the group. Her ex turned out to be a “baddy”, so she is on her own, with a bit of cash available.
Ruth is wanting some extra cash, so she decides to enter a t.v. game show called “Dash for Cash” hoping to win the grand prize. Ruth, and another super-competitive woman get to bickering with each other. And when the other woman is killed in a contest, Ruth becomes the prime suspect. So, it is up to the Garden Girls to discover the true murderer.

Book 3- Matrimony and Mayhem
Made in Savannah Cozy Mystery - book 8
Carlita Garlucci is the widow of a Mafia member, and the matriarch of the family
Mercedes Garlucci is her daughter who wants to become a writer
Vincent Garlucci, the oldest son wants to remain in the “Family”
Tony Garlucci is the middle son and the protector of mom and sis
Paulie Garlucci, the youngest, is now the Mayor of Clifton Falls, N.Y.
Carlita has moved to Savannah to get away from the crime “Family”, and has brought Mercedes and Tony with her to start a new life. They have opened a Pawn Shop and own some other buildings. One of the buildings is being remodeled into an Italian restaurant. Tony is getting married to another “Family” daughter. The wedding will be held at the new restaurant just before the Grand Opening. Her father is uneasy that some of the “competition” might want to send him a “message” from the wedding, so he sends a couple “associates” to keep an eye on things.

Book 4 – Devine Blindside
Devine Cozy Mystery series book 4
Joanna (Jo) Pepperdine, wants to get separation from her past. Using part of her inheritance, she buys a farm in the middle of nowhere near the town named “Devine”. Because of the past, she turns it into a halfway house for women that have been released for the nearby prison.
Delta Childress, ex-cook at the prison runs the kitchen, bakes for the retail bakery, and keeps the household in line. And becomes Jo’s best friend and confident.
Raylene Baxter is one of Jo’s first “clients”. Raylene was previously a Bail Bondsman and bounty hunter. Her partner is the business was killed on one of their jobs and Raylene was blamed for it.
Nash Greyson is Jo’s carpenter/handyman
Gary Stein is a retired farmer that has taken over running the gardens that supply the kitchen and store.
I had previously read one of the books in this series, so I was glad to see another one included in this collection. In this one Raylene is offered a part-time job at a Deli in town. Jo is trying to get the ladies prepared for life on the outside, so this seems to be a good next step for Raylene. The waitress that is supposed to train Raylene is not happy with the extra duty, and she shows it. The two don’t get along. So, when the other waitress turns up dead, you just know that Raylene is going to be suspected. Not only that, but the dead waitress was also working part-time at the local convenience store/gas station. So that left that business short- handed. Plus, the assistant manager there turns up missing. Also missing are Lottery tickets. About the only thing missing from this storyline is someone trying to take Jo’s farm away from her. Oh, wait, that is also happening. You don’t want to miss this story!

Forget Me Knot – book 5
Garden Girls Cozy Mystery series - book 13
Same cast as “Dash for Cash”, so I won’t repeat them, except for the addition of Brian Sellers, the owner of the Nails and Knobs hardware store. Brian is a retired Judge that moved to town and bought a couple businesses.
One morning there is a big commotion down at the local hardware store, police, ambulance and a crowd. Brian has been robbed and hit hard over the head with one of his wrenches. A customer finds him unconscious in a pool of blood. Of course, this is terrible news to the whole town, but especially to Andrea who has become engaged to Brian. When Brian comes too in the hospital, he can’t remember anything about moving to town. Not only that, he doesn’t remember anyone that lives here, including Andrea. Two of the “girls” think that they have “just the thing” that will restore his memory, before Andrea has to call off the wedding.

Merry Masquerade – book 6
Made in Savannah Mystery series – book 8
Once again staring the Garlucci family. This time, one of Carlita’s acquaintances is having a Masquerade Ball on her estate. One of her new hires is discovered dead in the pool house. The woman’s past indiscretions have left a trail of likely suspects. So, it is up to Carlita and Mercedes to narrow it down to the true culprit.

This boxed set has introduced me to a series I had not chosen yet. The Made in Savannah series was about a Mafia family, so I probably would not have picked it out myself, but they turned out to be as good as all of her other mysteries.
Hope’s books feed the mind; I haven’t figured out the villain early in any so far. They also feed the spirit with scriptures sprinkled about. And, they also feed the stomach, there are recipes included for some of the foods the characters eat. This buffet receives a “Thumbs up” from me.

“Heart & Holiday” Cozy Mystery Collection by talented author, Hope Callaghan, features six previously published books. Each time Ms. Callaghan releases a new book in a series, I think it’s the best one and that they can’t possibly can’t get any better, and then she writes the next one and amazes me once again. The writing style in these books flows smoothly, the mysteries are well-plotted, and there are always enough suspects, twists, red herrings, and subplots to hold the reader’s interest. Ms. Callaghan smoothly blends family, friendship, mystery, mayhem, and intrigue with laugh out loud moments, touches of sweet romance, realistic dialog, and affable, three-dimensional characters. I highly recommend Ms. Callaghan’s books to anyone who enjoys reading well crafted, clean, cozy mysteries.

When passengers begin reporting thefts of cash and valuables, Gusti, a room steward, becomes the prime suspect. Gloria accompanies Ruth to the elimination rounds in Grand Rapids. Trouble always seems to seek out Gloria, and as luck would have it, one of the contestants, Amy Mahoney, is murdered during the second round of the eliminations. Since Ruth and Amy engaged in online verbal spats and Amy played roughly with Ruth, she’s looking like the prime suspect. The Garden Girls brainstorm with each other, and Gloria goes undercover to clear Ruth’s name and identify the culprit.

The wedding is perfect, but tragedy strikes when a young woman collapses during the cocktail hour and later passes away. Fearing her food may be the cause, Carlita’s concerned Ravello’s will be shut down before it even opens. While local authorities investigate, her friend, Reese, helps Carlita and Mercedes sort through the clues and track down potential witnesses and suspects.

In the Divine Cozy Mystery series, you will meet Joanna “Jo” Pepperdine, who recently opened Second Chances in Divine, Kansas, a haven for women who have recently been released from Central State Women’s Penitentiary. Forget Me Knot (Garden Girls Cozy Mystery Series)

In Forget Me Knot, the thirteenth book in this series, Annabelle, Gloria’s 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis, won’t start. She’s devastated when her husband and mechanic both suggest it may be time to put Annabelle to rest, which adds stress Gloria doesn’t need while is getting ready for their combined family get-together and helping the Garden Girls plan a Memorial Day cookout/engagement celebration for Andrea and her fiancé, Brian. At Tori’s request, Carlita and her daughter, Mercedes, agree to stay at Montgomery Hall for a couple days to investigate the murder.

A holiday inspired boxed set with six delightful who dun it stories from four Hope Callaghan best- selling mystery series: Garden Girls, Cruise Ship, Made in Savannah, and Divine. I have read each mystery when the story was first published. Hope Callaghan's writing style has me hooked every time: delightful descriptions of intriguing settings, inquisitive sleuths, and diverse characters. As a cozy mystery, never too preachy just the right blend of scripture and spiritual elements. As a reader, I always enjoy how Hope Callaghan summarizes what happened previously, and then throws the reader a new idea or red herring. This helps the reader the remember what has happened and makes the reader speculate who dun it. As a Michigander I enjoy the small town Michigan setting of the Garden Girls. The Cruise Ship mysteries take place on the Florida coast. Savannah has a rich history with pirates and unique cuisine and traditions. Divine Intervention start to a new series, which is set in the town of Divine, Kansas - the Midpoint of the continuous 48 states. Scrumptious recipes are included.

I actually only read the first book in this selection. It was ok, didn't really feel like a Christmas book. Defiantly a cozy mystery. But I didn't expect it to be a CHRISTIAN mystery. Just really not a fan of prayer together and all that popping up in the story at odd moments. I didn't love the writing style, so decided to skip the rest in this selection.
