This is the best book of the series to this point, with only one left.

While unwed pregnany was a theme across the whole book, it was handled pretty well. It was shown as clearly a mistake but that abortion was also a poor choice, since it murders an innocent baby. I really liked the handling of the tough topic of abortion. The author did a brilliant job of showing the push-pull that I imagine a lot of scared women face when they end up in predicaments they weren’t predicting. I liked that the mom-to-be in this story showed some real growth, which she hadn’t done in the previous two books. She’s still selfish at the end, but less so, and she’s a lot more relatable by the end too.

Once again, Lelani was my favorite character. I love her grit and fight for her baby girl. The family difficulties she faced were realistically portrayed, which is actually a little scary. I would hate to have a manipulative mom like hers! The finale for Lelani was so sweet! I can’t say more, but trust me: you’ll want to gush about it.

The melodrama was back, but it was to a much smaller degree from the previous book. I was glad to see it was toned down.

The friends’ trip/vacation to Hawaii was a fun touch to this book. It let the friends we’ve gotten to know in a couple of books explore deeper and more complex parts of themselves in a completely different atmosphere, which naturally affected them each differently. I also liked that the romances were genuine and charming and sweet. They were there just enough to feel realistic but not so much that the central chick-lit feel was stripped.

Content: replacement profanity (one), expletive, unwed pregnancy theme, abortion considered

"Spring Broke" is the third book in this series. So far, four girls have moved in together and fixed up their house, now they are facing a couple problems. Kendal is in debt and now learns that she is pregnant. To get money, Megan suggests having a garage sale. This sounds like a great idea to Kendal. So she gets started right away. She is very excited until she finds out how much work a garage sale really is. At the same time, Lelani is struggling, trying to decide if she wants to go to Hawaii to visit her family or not. At first she just asks Megan to go with her, but by the end the whole group is going.

So far the series has been interesting and the story like has been good. In this book, she definitely makes the story more interesting and adds some surprising twists. I like this series and this book because it is very easy for anyone to find someone they relate to in this book.

I would recommend this book to almost anyone. It appeals to girls mainly, but some guys might enjoy it. But if you do decide to read it, make sure you start at the beginning of the series.

In typical chick lit fashion, this was a light read. However, it also lacked a lot of depth of the characters. For some reason I continue reading this series. The author manages to make me curious about the continuation of the "plot," but then I'm always disappointed with the next book.

I needed a book based in spring time for a reading challenge I am doing, and this was one that sounded like it could be funny, so I chose it. It did have some humorous elements, however it was also very dramatic, and had a very high religious tone to it.
The description of this book that I had read on my Library app was completely different than the description on the Goodreads. I also found it interesting that in the description on Goodreads it states that Lelani’s parents offer to host her and her friends for spring break, but that’s not accurate. Lelani calls her overbearing manipulative mother and tells her she is going to come visit over spring break to see her parents, although she mostly wants to see her daughter whom she loves and misses dearly. Although she is too afraid to say anything about her daughter to her mother, so she simply asks if it’s okay that she and her room mate stay in the guest house while they are there to visit. As the story continues she calls her mom again to ask if all 3 of her roommates can stay. Surprisingly her mom agrees to have them stay, and I say that is surprising because her mom is a real piece of work. Lelani on the other hand was one of my favorite characters in this book. I haven’t read the first two, but in this book she is a sweet, kind, generous, and loving person. Which is incredible considering the mother who “raised” her. Although her kindness is truly because of her own personality, and has nothing to do with her mother, and little to do with her own dad. I felt sorry for Lelani because of how cruel her mother had been to her, and for all the fears she had to face. I am so glad she found her courage and strength though, and that things turned out how they did in the end.
My favorite charter was Gil, he was kind, thoughtful, supportive, sweet, and giving of himself and his time. He was also incredibly romantic in my personal opinion. I loved what he had to say to Lelani’s mom when he stood up for Lelani, it was very sweet!
Gil’s sister Anna was another character I really liked, and I found her to be sweet, and funny! I loved the lessons she learned, and that she tried to share her personal experiences with her friends! I also love how she stuck up for her friends, even when it was unpopular in her family! I also love her relationship she has with her brother, and the support she gave to him.
Megan is nice, but also a little intense at times. I thought she needed to relax a little, but at the same time I did like how much she wants to help others and make a difference. I also really liked how committed she was to her faith in God.
I truly didn’t like Kendall in the beginning, and there were several moment throughout the book when I wanted to just yell at her a little, to try and get her to use common sense. However I loved how kind and patient her friends were with her, and how Megan really tried to keep under standing her. Also because of Megan’s desire to understand her, and continued prayers to know how to help her, it was incredible to see why Kendall was the way she was, and why she did so many of the things she did. Truly the break through that Megan has with her when discussing the value of an object, and interest on credit cards was enlightening, and I found myself judging Kendall less. I loved seeing her change and grow as a person as the book went on!

There was a strong religious tone in this book, which didn’t bother me at all, although because of the short overview I’d read it was surprising. Also because I know how crazy some people can get when it comes to the subject, this is not a book I’d recommend for people with strong opinions about abortion, and that are in agreement with it. That being said if you don’t have strong opinions about that subject, and you don’t mind a little girl drama, and you like cheesy chick flicks, than I recommend this book. I personally felt like there are some really good life lessons in the book. Staying strong in your faith, being smart financially, serving others, giving of yourself, loving unconditionally, sacrifice, and friendship are some of the things I felt the book touched on!
Over all I really liked the book, and I am glad I found it!

In the heat of the moment, Lelani tells the people at work she's going home to Maui for Spring Break. After she says it though, the idea of going home to retrieve her daughter gets more appealing. Determined not to go alone, she tries to convince Megan to join her. When Megan's boss refuses to give her the time off, both Anna and Kendall jump at the chance. Anna is having a hard time convincing her abuela that Edmond is worth dating despite not being Latino, and Kendall is battling credit collectors and an unplanned pregnancy. Maybe the beach is exactly what these roommates need.
It continued the story nicely, and while there is a jump in the timeline it's clear the story has continued exactly how it was supposed to.

Even though I didn't appreciate everything in this book - and certainly didn't agree with everything - I did like it better than the last one. This series was intriguing for me because the author did a really good job of making each of the four girls unique, and that's what kept me coming back. It was especially interesting to see how the one girl, Kendall, sounds so normal and justified when it's from her point of view, and like a delusional, spoiled brat when from everyone else's point of view.

I'm giving the book 3 out of 5 stars, 4 out of 10.

The first book was meh. The second felt like we were getting somewhere. This book took me back to the True Colors series. It was topical (unwed pregnancy, controlling parents) and had the right amount of conflict, romance, humour, and faith. This book was the payoff of the first two and I can't wait to see how it ends.

A light chick lit read that was enjoyable and quick. I see how the characters are evolving into young smart women that make better choices. True to genre formula but there are many enjoyable moments. On to the last book in the series.

This one was just ok for me. I am kicking myself for starting with book 3 in a series I never do that. However judging by the reviews of this book as well as the first two I don't think I'd have liked it any better than I did.

Fun and heartwarming

A little predictable but enjoyable just the same. Maui was a great seeing and the characters with Hawaiian names were interesting addition.

Fell flat for me. Maybe it’s that the roommates don’t call Kendall out on all the crap or the fact that Kendall seriously will not grow up.

This was a cute story about friendship. I chose to listen to this book because ‘a book with a season in the title’ is one category in the Wichita Read. I also like the author Melody Carlson.

While I didn't really love either of the first two books in this series, I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. In this installment, we find the four residents of 86 Bloomberg Place preparing to have a garage sale-in their never ending quest to help Kendall get her finances in proper order. Megan was the original driving force behind the garage sale; but she's about to lose her mind over Kendall's attitude towards it, especially since she's also attempting to manage her boss who's also driving her crazy. Kendall is struggling to accept the fact that she's pregnant and broke, and continues to behave in her typical immature manner. Anna has had about all she can take from her family's judgmental attitudes towards her boyfriend, and Lelani is struggling with the fact that she walked away from her daughter, and hasn't been welcomed back to visit her since.

A trip to Maui to visit Lelani's family seems to be the answer to a lot of the girl's problems, but more unexpectedly arise along the way. And it only gets more complicated when the guys decide to join in on the fun, and soon everyone has a front row seat to the drama surrounding Lelani's situation, and the difficult decision she has to make for herself, and for what's best for her daughter.

While Spring Broke is definitely still a light read, I enjoyed the fact that there's a lot more growth shown in certain characters than in the previous two books, especially in regards to Kendall, Lelani, Anna, and Gil. With the growth came a better relationship between the girls, and it made the story line a lot more interesting to follow along with. In particular, I really enjoyed Anna in this one, and the steps she goes to finally stand up for herself to her domineering family; although overall I'd still say that Lelani is my favorite of the four main characters.

I also really enjoyed the way that Melody Carlson set up the ending of this one, and I'm looking forward to picking the next one up to see what's next in store for Lelani, Kendall, Anna, Megan, and their numerous friends and family members. The only real downside to this one was Megan's character, as I found her preachy ways were off-putting, and not truly representational of Christian principles, but I did love Megan's mom as a character.

All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone who's a fan of chick lit, and lighter reads, and I'd definitely say it's the best of the series so far!

Title: SPRING BROKE

Oh the drama! I did read the other three books in this series, I Heart Bloomberg, Let Them Eat Fruitcake, and Three Weddings and a Barmitzah, but it was been awhile, so I forgot how dramatic these four girls are. They are each dealing with their own trials and issues, and try to get along with each other, but with four different personalities in the same house, tempers do flare.

Ms. Carlson is a very prolific author, and very talented, handling whatever genre she writes in well. If you like chick lit – then you won’t want to miss any of the books in the 86 Bloomberg Place series. Available in Kindle, paperback, or audio.

I even thought about putting this one down multiple times, because of how preachy Megan was being towards Kendall. I got why she was being preachy and all that, but I can't help but feel that she could have done it in a better way. I mean really sometimes showing people what something really is will work much better than just stating your opinion on it over and over again and just being a brat about the situation.

Now I will say that Lelani is my favorite character and she has been through most of the series. Not just because I find her story-line the most interesting, but also because of her personality and how she doesn't just preach to people constantly and expect that to fix the problem. I was so happy with the outcome for her at the end of this story and I can't believe she was actually able to get what she wanted.

Kendall was just as annoying as she was in the first two books in this series for the first half of this book, but once they got on vacation it actually started to seem like she might be growing up and that she is going to face what she got herself into and not just try to fly by the seat of her pants anymore. While yes she still has a lot of growing up to do and she is going to have a rude awakening in a few more months. I think she will be able to handle it especially if she has Lelani's help.

Anna... what to say about Anna, she is finally starting to be more friendly to the girls and fixs some things with her mother, but she is still not my favorite character and I hope some things with her get resolved in the final book.

Megan... boy is she still annoying, and not just because of the preachyness but because she also keeps everyone at arms length and tries to control Kendall. (Yes I know she is trying to help, but most of the time she just upsets Kendall and refuses to reason with her.) I was happy to see that she is chilling out a bit, but I still think she has a bitter more growing to do as well.

I really enjoyed the first book. I love old houses and the story of these girls fixing up the house in the first book was magical to me. I would have liked if Kendall would have found some treasures in the attic. It would have been nice to read about the girls getting excited about something instead of everyone complaining. The idea to have a garage sale was Megan's and she was shocked Kendall motivated herself enough to bring things downstairs and was completely pissed off bc she did.

Then there was Anna and Gils family. Honestly it's not alright to be completely rude to guests at a party. I don't care if it's your party and you are old it's not polite in any culture. If you wanted to be realistic the old hag would have made her mean comments in Spanish.

The other thing that bothered me was this attitude that you cannot have a successful job unless you are a college graduate. This attitude that you are not intelligent unless you have gone to college is nonsense. I know plenty of people that are intelligent but could not afford college. There are people that go to college only to struggle to find a good paying job. Look at Megan for instance. Megan has a low income job that she could do without a degree but she went to college. She doesn't have four years of college loans to repay or she would be screwed. The idea that you cannot be successful, intelligent, or have a good paying job without a college education is a complete fallacy. In fact if you have to get loans in order to go to college it sometimes makes more sense to NOT go to college.

First I read Spring Broke by Melody Carlson. It's the third in a series about four women who share a house on Bloomberg Street. Kendall, the owner of the house, broke and in lots of debt from being a shopaholic, not to mention caring for a puppy and with a baby on the way, she has to get it together. Her housemates help her plan a garage sale and to sell some designer things on eBay. Megan, the most practical and serious of the renters, is struggling with her job, and wishes she could start teaching, instead of designing homes for the wealthy. She questions her purpose and wants to do something more meaningful. Lelani, the beautiful Hawaiian wants to go home to Maui from spring break, but is afraid of her mother. She has a daughter that her parents are raising, Emma, and wants to do what's best for the both of them. And Anna is trying to deal with her Hispanic family and their attitudes toward her caring boyfriend and her friends, who are not Hispanic.

Lelani invites them, along with the boys, Marcus, Edmond, and Gil, to Maui with her. So the adventure begins. I really like to see how Kendall grew up a little in this novel and got involved with life and her unborn baby. I also really like Lelani in this book, as it is mostly about how she deals with what she wants for her future, and what do do about Emma. The characters really pull through for each other in this book. I would definitely recommend the Bloomberg series.

What could be more fun than a garage sale? Apparently, a lot of things, but Kendall is desperate for money, and is more than willing to part with her grandmother’s “treasures” from the attic. And some actually are worth some serious money, and with Megan’s mom’s help, Kendall is able to sort things out. She even decides to sell some of her own designer clothes and accessories. And what brings her to this sacrificial act? The possibility of a trip to Hawaii, if she can swing the air fare. In fact, the whole gang ends up going. This third book of the series is perhaps a bit more trite than the first two, and somewhat predictable. Still, it is an entertaining tale. But how will it all wrap up? On to the fourth and final book!

DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME. I read 50 pages in and just couldn't finish. I was expecting a light "beach read" and I guess that is what this is. It is so "like" shallow, that I felt myself getting more stupid with each page. No doubt that this author has written (as it says in her back cover biography "published more than one hundred books because with books like this one I think anyone could write.

Melody Carlson wrote one of my all-time favorite books (Looking for Cassandra Jane), so I when I found this book at a hospital book sale, I picked it up. I wasn't expecting to read a masterpiece but I was hoping for something more important than what this book offers. Jumping into the middle of the story without reading the two previous books didn't bother me. But the characters are one-dimensional, the ending is too perfect to be true, and it was too simple of a story for me to enjoy it.

I didn't like this book as much as the second one, but it was still a really good read. I think it got a little corny at the end, with everything working out oh-so-perfectly.

One thing I've really enjoyed about Melody Carlson's book is her ability to be real life, where sometimes life isn't perfect. So I was a little disappointed with this one.

It's still a good fun read!

The roommates are taking a trip to Hawaii.. maybe? If everyone is able to work it out so that they have time off and they are able to afford it, everyone will go back with Lelani to visit her baby and have Spring Break in Maui... BUT... what will come of it? Will Lelani want Emma, her baby, to continue living with her parents?
