This book is about dissolving the self and describes this as the key to finding awareness and ultimately Enlightenment.

If you have been on a spiritual enquiry for some time and/or are serious about understanding what's involved in becoming fully awake, this book is a useful read. It cuts through the noise of spiritual learning and goes straight to an action plan.

The author describes in plain and simple English, understanding the typical thought process and tendencies of the Western mind, exactly all you need to do. It's a simple message and it is talked about repeatedly from different contexts throughout the book which assists to answer those concerns and questions.

Importantly however, it fails to discuss the common pitfalls of applying this approach. Even if you read this book I think the idea of the 'no self' can be misunderstood, and therefore the book needs to be combined with a book like Jack Kornfield's A Path with Heart (A guide through the perils and promises of spiritual life). Important perils of the 'no self' idea are discussed well here. For this reason, just 3 stars.

There's always more to learn about human perception, including our dedication to our ego. This author honoured that mission and approached the topic from various angles so the reader could see the real picture of how we make up a sense of self and how that ego causes trouble for us.

His book goes a bit deeper, but it's easy to follow and it's also full of gems that help you get out of your own way.

There is a lot of beautiful writing, and it's very thought provoking.

One of my favourite quotes is:
....

"Why are you unhappy? Because 99.9 percent of everything you think, and of everything you do, is for yourself—and there isn't one."

......
Read it. It's relatable and full of wisdom.

You may even find yourself repeating it right away like I did.

Good stuff.
