That's the scariest headline ever written in the Pine Grove Gazette. But this holiday season, it's all too true...
This killer had a sweet tooth. So the December air is crisp and just a bit creepy this year.
Red-faced children throw snowballs. Elderly couples drink hot chocolate in the cold. Chelsea and Miss May speed through town in their VW Bus, hunting yet another killer.
Miss May is a sharp former lawyer, determined to make candy canes sweet again. Chelsea, Miss May’s Watson, just wants to solve the mystery without changing out of her fuzzy red Santa slippers.
Toss in Christmas tree drama, a missing Santa Claus, and buttery holiday cookies?
That's the recipe for a holiday cozy you'll want to read twice.
You'll love this cozy because everyone loves a holiday mystery with smart, funny sleuths and a conniving killer.

Pine Grove is gearing up for Christmas, starting with their tree lighting celebration. Mayor Delgado has hired a professional Santa for the event and it promises to bring in many out-of-town guests. Unfortunately some citizens, mainly Miss May's sister DeeDee, think cutting down a 100+ year-old-tree just to string lights on is murder. DeeDee is seen publicly arguing with Orville, the professional Santa. When Orville turns up dead, Chief Flanagan is quick to arrest DeeDee. Miss May is busy at the farm and doesn't really want to get involved but she has to help her sister no matter what! Miss May, Chelsea and Teeny team up once again to solve the mystery. Also, Christmas is coming and Chelsea has yet to make her relationship status official. Is she ready for that yet?
This mystery is really tight. There are numerous red herrings and possibly unknown suspects. I did guess who might be the killer from the first clue but once that person's identity was revealed, I had no idea who did it. I never guessed it even at the end.
Chelsea is less of a crybaby here. I don't like her inability to lie under pressure and how she lies to the men she cares about. I do like her compassion for Germany and how kind she is to him. Wayne may be sexy but he's been kind of a jerk. He's better here but still a cop following the chief's orders. Germany is bizarre but sweet. He's devoted to making Chelsea happy and that's all that matters. Which one should she choose? I'd choose neither but if she has to pick one, I'd pick Germany. Miss May is as strong as ever but she's missing her apple pies! She also fails to put the clues together. Teeny is purely silly. Fortunately her favorite soap got cancelled and she has stopped talking endlessly about it. She actually has some good ideas in this investigation.
The chief suspect is DeeDee. How on earth can a woman who believes cutting down trees is murder take a human life? That's just dumb. I finally get where Sunshine is coming from and why she's so horrid but honestly, can't the woman run her own investigation? Mayor Delgado is always a suspect as far as Chelsea is concerned. The Mayor is in hiding, out of office, unable to deal with the problems that have arisen. She's left them all to her deputy mayor. He's in way over his head. I don't think she's the killer. That doesn't make sense for the town but she may know more than she lets on. Another townsperson on the radar is Humphrey. A formerly extra-fluffy Santa-sized man, losing weight cost him his job as town Santa. He's desperate to get his job back. Binge eating may make him gain weight but he could have been motivated to kill Orville because of jealously. He seems nice but he's angry at losing his job so who knows what he could have done. Lincoln, a professional Santa's elf, claims he was working with Orville, yet no one has ever heard of him. He's a nasty, bad-tempered man like Orville. I find it hard to believe either of them were professional Christmas anything. Lincoln looks like a good suspect because of his sudden appearance in town and nasty personality. Finally, Jennifer Paul, DeeDee's friend and fellow tree-hugger. She's a former mean girl turned yogi. She isn't very calm and her alibi can't hold up. Chief Flanagan doesn't even suspect Jennifer probably because she has a grudge against Miss May. It doesn't look good for Jennifer though.
Other characters appear to move along the investigation are Peaches, Teeny's sister. As energetic and enthusiastic as Teeny is, Peaches is indolent and sarcastic. Liz, the newspaper reporter, has information but isn't willing to give it up so easily. I find her sneakiness and abrasive personality off-putting. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Cookie, Orville's wife. A typical Mrs. Claus, she is sugar and spice and everything nice. How horrible that her husband died while she was away. I also suspect he was keeping secrets from her. I feel so very bad for her. There's also the faithful farmhand, KP, who is a bit grumpy in this novel. He's devoted to Miss May and the farm but not so much the town. We know he's not a killer though! Big Dan, auto mechanic, has caught on to the investigating thing. He's also a potential love interest for Teeny. He may be a little zen and a little slow but he's kind and I like him.
I enjoy this light and fluffy series. I recommend checking these out of Kindle Unlimited. They'll make you smile and maybe even laugh which is very much needed right now. Yes, they're murder mysteries but they're fun and light.
This was a fun Christmas cozy mystery. This is book six in the series but the first one I have read and only because I wanted to feel more christmasy. The story sure helped and was easy to read, despite not knowing the characters as well as I should. I will be correcting than as it was an enjoyable read and a fun group of characters that I want to get to know better. They were slightly quirky but that was part of the small town charm. The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing with a number of suspects and possible motives. I liked the Christmas feel to the book and the very unusual murder weapon but did wonder why one of the main characters left her Xmas shopping until the last moment. I know she was busy solving a murder and working in the farm shop but still. It did make for a couple of humours situations though. Off to see what else the author has written. The last thing you want as Mayor is to start off the holiday season with Santa arguing with a town resident over the use of a real or fake tree. With no tree to light up and the residents demanding a show, it gets worse when Santa disappears. Then his body is found and the resident that argued with him is arrested. Lucky for her she is Miss May's sister and has solved a number of cases. The amateur sleuth is join by her friend Teeny and her niece Chelsea , the three of them are quick to start there investigation to save Christmas. The dead Santa was a professional Santa from out of town and only hired after the normal Santa lost weight. Could he have a motive to murder? Or what about the grumpy elf who might or might not have been his business partner? Or was his partner a woman? And don't forget the fight over the tree, could a tree hugger be responsible? With so many suspects to look into, things are going to be busy for the trio and Christmas might just have to be put on hold.
It’s Christmas time in Pine Grove, New York. The town is ready for the annual tree lighting and a new Santa Claus has been hired to be a part of the ceremony. Thank to Miss May’s sister, there is no tree to light. Dee has convinced the mayor that cutting down a tree is a bad idea. The dominoes begin to fall and stop with a dead Santa with a Candy Cane shaped stab wound. I love this series! The characters are entertaining. They have developed over the life of the series. The setting is typical of cozies, a lovely small town where everyone knows each other. The plot in this book was paced well. I recommend this book.
This was an enjoyable holiday read. I had not read any of the books in the series before but didn't feel that was a disadvantage. The storyline was cute and I look forward to reading more from this series when I get off my holiday cozy murder binge! Perfect for reading in front of the fireplace with a nice cup of tea.
Candy Slain is book 6 in the Apple Orchard Cozy Mystery series by Chelsea Thomas.

I continue to enjoy this cozy mystery series. I find them to be well written and very entertaining. The plot moves at a steady pace that keeps you engaged. The characters are well-developed and we learn a little bit more about them each new book. Teeny always evokes a giggle or two, and I rarely laugh out loud so when I do you know I am enjoying the book.
I highly recommend this book/series. It can easily stand alone but I recommend you read the series from the beginning.

When the mayor hires an out of town disagreeable Santa Claus all chaos breaks loose at the tree lighting! It is a good time of year for Aunt May and Chelsea at the tree farm and May's best friend, Teeny at her restaurant. When it was time to put a tree in the town square for the lighting, May's sister a bit eccentric, yet a strong environmental advocate creates a one woman rebellion against cutting down the chosen Christmas Tree she named Fred! So without the tree on the square, they were going ahead to having the Santa for the kids. While waiting for the Santa to show up the crowd grew restless. When Chelsea and May go looking for him, they find him dead in the gazebo - murdered with a candy cane! Because May's sister DeeDee had an argument with the Santa, they arrest her for the murder. May, Chelsea and Teeny now have to get involved trying to solve the mystery and free DeeDee! Now we start with all the twists and turns, red-herrings and laughs as well as some unusual characters that show up. Will they find the answer when so many things still point to DeeDee? This is a really fun series with lots of laugh out loud moments - a must read! I received and ARC but opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I just recently started reading the Apple Orchard mystery series by Chelsea Thomas, and I am enjoying being able to read the books in order without having to wait for them to be written! About a month after the conclusion of book 5, it is now Christmas time in Pine Grove. When the Santa Claus that was hired for the night of the tree lighting ceremony fails to appear, Chelsea, Miss May, and Teeny know that they can never trust a missing person not to be dead! Shortly after his failure to show up on cue, they discover Orville Star at the gazebo and he is in fact dead. He has a candy cane in his neck! How and why was Pine Grove's Santa Claus candy slain? As Teeny says, it's "suspicious, not delicious." But when Miss May's sister, Dee Dee is the number one suspect because of her environmental protests about cutting down a Christmas tree for the ceremony, the three sleuths know that they must get to work and solve another case. It is great how these three ladies manage to solve cases without the help of the police department. This time, however, they get help from Big Dan, Teeny's "love" interest. We''ll have to keep reading to see what happens next in Chelsea's love life. This is a really entertaining and fun cozy mystery series.
Christmas is a special time of the year Miss May and Chelsea! The farm is bustling with people getting their Christmas trees! The town of Pine Grove has people coming from far and near to see the famous Christmas tree lighting ceremony! Unfortunately, there is no tree, because of protests from Dee Dee, Miss May’s sister , about how trees shouldn’t be sacrificed for a few days display. If that’s not bad enough the hired Santa quits! If that’s not bad enough, Santa is found murdered! The mayor is distraught over losing the tourism and yet another murder in her quiet time. No worries Miss May, Chelsea and Miss Teeny are on the case! Perhaps the most difficult case so far as the murder victim wasn’t know to anyone in town. This book had the usual adventure, drama and humor with a Christmas twist to it. I really love this book and this series! It’s a good quick read that lets you escape reality and Christmas drama for a bit. I always look forward to reading the book next book in the series! Highly recommend this book!

This series of books featuring sleuths Chelsea, Miss May, and Miss May's best friend Teeny. These three find themselves knee-deep in murder. That's not necessarily unusual for these three but when Miss May's sister, Dee Dee, is arrested, it becomes personal. So, in between taking care of business, selling Christmas trees and delicacies from their bakery, the three set off to discover who the killer is with no help from the very inept police. I've read a number of the books in this series and although it's a series, each book works well as a stand-alone. It's filled with humour, sarcasm, and even some pathos. I love these stories and unfortunately(for me), everything else tends to get pushed aside. I just keep saying I'll stop after this next chapter. But that never works.....I finished the book in one afternoon to a very satisfying conclusion.

The newest Santa is found dead with a candy cane in his neck. Who would want to kill Santa? Dee Dee, Miss May's sister is arrested because of the big protest of her trying to save Fred the huge 300-year-old tree and that the new Santa wants a real tree, not a fake tree. He and Dee Dee had some heated words earlier. This puts Miss May, Chelsea and Teeny on the case. Can they find out the real reason the mean Santa was killed? It won't be easy, plus Germany is wanting to show Chelsea about his undying love for her. Things get rather strange and odd as is normally does with Miss May and the girls. Enjoy another wacky story with the people of Pine Grove. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It is Christmas time in Pine Grove and the town is getting ready for their annual tree lighting party. Unfortunately the guy that is playing Santa Claus is found murdered by a candy cane. There are lots of suspects since he was not a pleasant man, but Dee Dee was the prime suspect since she argued with him and loves candy canes. Dee Dee is Miss May’s sister so the crew is helping the policy find the true murderer. Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny with the help of some friends are working through the clues to find the real killer. Fun cozy mystery with intrigue, a little romance, humor and some funny banter between the crew. This is a quick read with no cliffhangers, each book is a standalone. I received an ARC and I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Another it's Christmas time and somebody killed Santa story. Alright, a candy cane through the neck is unique, but still, if it's not Santa being murdered, it's an elf. I really couldn't stay focused with this #6 of the series.
The characters Teeny and Germany Turtle are getting on my nerves, and I wish someone would murder them. Teeny is a whiner, always coming up with ridiculous scenarios based upon shows she watches, and doesn't add much, in my opinion, to the stories as a whole. Germany Turtle I simply don't understand at all, and I truly don't see the attraction Chelsea has for him, except that he's "safe".
Also the fake tree vs. live tree debate for the tree lighting ceremony was just boring!
Before Santa is deposed of, he manages to help create an uproar over the Christmas tree for the lighting ceremony. Besides that, what is Santa really up to? This is the question that the team must find the answer to , in order to find who did him in.
Chelsea, who says you can only date one guy at a time? There is no ring on your finger. They each have their own special qualities. Just a saying......
Cute fun cozy read. Very enjoyable. Can be read by itself, especially if just starting here. But you might want to go back and check out the quirkiness of the characters.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
It's Christmas time in Pine Grove! As the residents and neighbors gather for the tree lighting ceremony, there is a big problem, no tree! Environmentalists, lead by DeeDee, Miss May's sister, don't want "Fred" the chosen fir to be cut down! The new Santa, Orville Starr, storms away only to be found later in the gazebo behind city hall. Unfortunately, he was dead, stabbed in the neck with a candy cane! Who could do such a thing, DeeDee who was fighting for "Fred", Lincoln, the Elf who appeared in town looking to "work" with Santa again, or maybe Mrs. Claus, Cookie Starr. The three amateur sleuths again eat and plan their strategy to solve this latest crime
I enjoyed this addition to this fun series. Miss May, Chelsea, and Teeny save the day, or holiday in this case, once again.
There’s friction in town when one group wants to cut down a live tree for the tree lighting ceremony and another faction holds out for saving the tree and using an artificial stand in. When the Santa that the Mayor hires turns up dead after he sides with having a live tree, Miss Mays sister is arrested for the murder. Of course the police need all the help they can get, even if they think they have the culprit.

It felt like I was hanging out with old friends. Miss May, Chelsea and Teeny are so much fun, especially when they try to give reasonable explanations for what they’re doing! Miss May is their only voice of reason, but Teeny is coming up with some great ideas of her own for this murder mystery they are working on solving. Chelsea is getting a bit more romance in her life and even Teeny might be getting some of her own finally! Christmas is a good time for new things, too bad there was a murder to solve!

Another great story from the Chelsea Thomas writing duo. Sometimes I have trouble picturing how a scene would play out and then I laugh at myself and remember, this Is fiction. Extremely entertaining fiction from some gifted, highly imaginative storytellers. The trio of zany (sometimes ditzy) amateur detectives, Miss May, Chelsea, and Teeny, are on another case. I am glad that the little town they live in is fictional. With its high rate of murder per capita, I would be afraid to walk down the street.
The story is filled with red herrings, romance, and of course mystery and intrigue. This was an enjoyable, well-written, fun, and easy read.
Chelsea Thomas is a fabulous writer that always brings a comedic flair to her charming and clean cozey mystery murders with vibrant and colorful characters that are determined to solve the mysterys that occur in their small town where mayhem and intrigue keep popping up in their day to day life Chelsea Thomas remembers to to give life's gurney a lighter note because after all this series is a cozey style of mystery and it's always nice to be able to smile at the end. Acquire " Candy Slain " so you yourself can sit back relax and enjoy it as much as I have. 😀 Kat
it’s just not a tree lighting without a tree - add in a Santa disaster, and it must be Christmastime in Pine Grove.
Chelsea, Teeny and Aunt May are a terrific crime fighting trio. Anti tree harvesting Aunt DeeDee is a hippy twist to the tree farm/orchard/ bake shop owning family.
Germany Turtle is an hilarious and charming romantic addition to life to Chelsea- and is not nearly as fickle as detective Wayne the dork.
Much ado this Christmas in Pine Grove- and the ladies and their friend and cohorts do their best to save the season!
Love this series! The characters are like family members. Teeny is crazy and total fun. Chelsea and Miss May are so realistic; they make you laugh at their antics. The story is totally fun and will keep you entertained. This series is wonderful and I have enjoyed every book. The Christmas theme is a new twist and perfect for this time of year. Always looking for new books by Chelsea Thomas because they are all very entertaining. I purchased a copy of this book through KU so that I can read it again.
Our 3 super sleuths Miss May, Chelsea and of course Teeny really have their work cut out for them as the victim is new to town so no one really knows him. There are plenty of twists and to be honest at times I thought maybe this one will be the one they can't solve. I liked how we got to know Linda the Mayor a bit more and well I just don't how I feel about Chelsea and Mr Turtle... Good luck guessing who the killer is and candy canes will never be the same again lol

Always fun to see Miss May, Teenie, Chelsea and the Apple Orchard's gang back together again, until controversy over a Christmas tree may have led to murder, spilling over to their personal and professional lives. Miss May's sister Dee Dee is accused of murder, while the sales of their Christmas tree farm has plummeted. Is it over a tree, competition to be the town's Santa or something more sinister?

Pine Grove hired a talented Santa, but in real life, Orville has a talent for making enemies. When Santa fails to appear at the celebration, a new mystery begins for Chelsea, Miss May, and Teeny. Honestly, this series keeps getting better. The characters remain fresh, the writing crisp, and the storyline solid. I recommend Candy Slain, as well as the entire series.

A great, wonderfully written cozy mystery set during the holiday season. Chelsea does a fantastic job writing her stories so they pull the reader in, are entertaining, have wonderful characters and make it so the reader can't wait for the next book from her. Love all the books I've read from her and this one did not disappoint.

This book follows the same trend as the others in the series with Chelsea, Miss May, and Teeny finding another dead body and being forced to become involved in the investigation when someone they know gets accused of the murder. It has a festive feel as it is death by candy cane, and there are imitation Santa Clauses involved. It is a fun, enjoyable read as are all of the books in this series. Teeny brings her usual humor to the book.
Another enjoyable book in this series. I enjoy reading about Miss May, Chelsea and Teeny's adventure with solving a new murder mystery. After finding santa dead in the gazebo, they must get together and prevent an innocent woman, May's sister Dee Dee, from going to prison for a crime she didn't commit. Can't wait for their next adventure! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
As with all of Chelsea Thomas's cozy mysteries, this is a fun, warm-feeling read. Set at Christmas time in a small town, this story has an extra cozy feel and leaves the reader guessing, trying to solve the mystery. I'd recommend this for a fun Christmas-themed read, snuggled next to a fire with some hot cocoa! (Or really, any time of year.) Looking forward to more in this series!

That fun and crazy Teeny makes me laugh every single time, she’s such a hoot and a good friend to Miss May and Chelsea. Not to mention the town’s best chef, but they needed more than chef skills to solve this murder that turned into a second one eventually. But just in time for Christmas Eve dinner, the ladies succeeded again. I’m definitely not a fan of who Chelsea chose to date, and I guess I’ll always be Team Wayne! Thank goodness for book blurbs lol.
The author has given us such wonderful characters. When the town santa is killed the evening of the tree lighting, poor Aunt DeeDee is arrested for the crime. Everyone in town had issues with the victim so the little group of Miss May, Teeny and Chelsea take it upon themselves to find the true killer.
