Chidambara Ragasiyam by Indira Soundarrajan is a fascinating blend mysticism and philosophy wrapped in a modern investigative narrative. The story revolves around a rational city family who gets drawn into a web of secrets surrounding including alchemy, ashtasiddhis— secrets that touch upon the lives and practices of the Sithargal (sages) and Agoris.

What I found compelling is the way it bridges the esoteric and the everyday. The mystical elements are explained but you are left to disbelieve as do the characters. The characters — grounded in reality — are the audience’s entry point into these otherworldly domains. This contrast enhances the intrigue and makes it sound plausible.

The world of the Sithargal is particularly evocative — their wisdom, meditative power, and near-supernatural insights are presented with reverence. The Agoris, too, are shown not merely as exotic or extreme but as carriers of a deeper, misunderstood spiritual truth. Soundarrajan manages to keep the tone balanced: respectful of tradition, curious about the mystical, yet always tethered to human emotion and reason.

I couldn't help but wonder, by the end of the novel, whether we’ve lost touch with a vast reservoir of ancient knowledge by embracing the English "norm". The story leaves you thinking not just about what’s hidden within ancient writings.

A gripping, thought-provoking read that manages to be both entertaining and fascinating.

Thrillers are interesting. Adding a spiritual dimension allows you to incorporate any of your imagination, making it even more captivating.

Another page-turner from Indira Soundarrajan sir. This is my second book by this author. The story moves at a fast pace, much like his book *Sivam*. It involves Siva,Siddhars, and spiritual illusions, making it a captivating read.

However, I felt that the story had effectively ended with around 50 pages remaining, which made it seem like it was dragging. Yet, the final chapters 34 and 35 (about 25 pages) brought everything together beautifully, and I thoroughly enjoyed that part.

I’ve read a similar passage in The Hindu newspaper (November 8, 2022,)and was astonished by that. Let me share some passages from both sources with you.

From Book :
“அந்தக் கோவிலே அதிசயம்தான்! நாலு புறமும் நாலு வாசல் மட்டுமில்ல… மொத்தம் ஒன்பது வாசல். கூரையில 21,600 ஓடுகள். அதைப் பொருத்த 72 ஆயிரம் ஆணிகளை பயன்படுத்தி இருக்காங்க.
அங்க நடராஜர் சாமிக்கு வலப்பக்கமா ஒரு திரை தொங்கிட்டு இருக்கும். அதை விலக்கிக் காட்டுவாங்க. அங்க ஒண்ணும் இருக்காது.” ஒரு பக்கம் ஆட்ட சொரூபம், இன்னொரு பக்கம் எதுவும் இல்லை. இந்த எதுவும் இல்லாததை ‘ஆகாயம்’னும் சொல்லலாம்.”

“சிதம்பரம் கோவிலுக்கு ஒன்பது வாசல்; நமக்கு ஒன்பது துவாரங்கள். அங்க 21,600 ஓடுகள். நாம் ஒரு நாளைக்கு 21,600 தடவை மூச்சு விடுறோம். அந்த ஓடுகளைப் பொருத்த 72 ஆயிரம் ஆணிகள். நமக்கு 72 ஆயிரம் நரம்புகள்! அங்க சாமி ஓர் இடத்துல காட்சி ரூபமா இருக்காரு. பக்கத்துலயே இல்லாம இருக்கார். அவருக்கு அது வலது பக்கம். நமக்கு இடது பக்கம். இது இதயத் துடிப்பைக் குறிக்குது.
இப்படியொரு மனிதனோட உடற்கூறோடு அந்தக் கோயில் பொருந்திப் போகுது. அங்க இன்னொரு அதிசயமும் இருக்கு. ஒரே இடத்துல நின்னுகிட்டு நடராஜ சாமியை மட்டுமல்ல… மகாவிஷ்ணுவான கோவிந்தராஜரையும் நீ கும்பிடலாம். தலையை மட்டும் திருப்பிக்கணும்.
ஒருத்தன் ஆட்டக்காரன்; இன்னொருத்தன் தூக்கக்காரன்! ஒருத்தன் லிங்கம்; இன்னொருத்தன் ரங்கம்! அவங்க ரெண்டு பேருமே, ‘நாங்க ஒண்ணுதான்; வெவ்வேறு கிடையாது’ன்னு சொல்லாம சொல்றாங்க. வெயிலும், நிழலும் இருந்தாதான் அதை நாம் புரிஞ்சிக்க முடியும். ஒண்ணு மட்டும் இருந்து… இன்னொண்ணு இல்லேன்னா அருமை தெரியாது. அந்த மாதிரிதான் அவங்க ரெண்டு பேரும் அங்க இருக்காங்க!”

The Chidambaram temple is called Ponnambalam. It has nine kalasas, which represent the nine sakthis, said T. Raj-arathinam, in a discourse.
Thirumoolar, in his Thirumandiram, says that Omkara has 64 arts. The Chidambaram temple has 64 roof beams, which denote the 64 arts. The roof is covered with 21,600 gold sheets. It is said that a human being takes 21,600 breaths per day. The 21,600 gold plates are symbolic of this. The number of nadis in a human being is said to be 72,000. In the Chidambaram temple, 72,000 nails have been used to symbolise this. The Panchakshara mantra has five syllables, and so there are five steps leading to the shrine. These steps are known as the Panchakshara padi.
Lord Siva, who resides in us, also resides in the Ponnam-balam. It is to show this, that the Ponnambalam has been built like the human body. Chidambara darshan is worship of the One in our hearts.
The Chidambaram temple represents the sky, one of the Panchabhutas. Lord Siva is here in the form of Akasa Linga. He is adorned with a garland of vilva leaves. Lord Nataraja's lifted left foot représents Goddess Sakthi. It is called kunchitapada and anugraha pada. The significance of kunchitapada is described in Umapathy Sivam's Kun-chitangri Stava, a Sanskrit work which has 300 verses. The kunchitapada assures us that He is our refuge and the One who saves us. Nataraja's front left hand points to the raised left foot, to indicate this. The left foot represents atmas, which have been rid of the three malams (impurities).
Muyalakan, who lies beneath His right foot represents maya (illusion), which keeps us from realising God.

சிதம்பர ரகசியம் - நான் படித்த முதல் spiritual thriller புத்தகம். வாழ்க்கையில எப்போதுமே நாம எதிர்பார்க்காத நேரத்துல, எதிர்பார்க்காத இடங்கள்ல இப்படிலாம் நடக்குமானு யோசிக்குற அளவுக்கு எல்லாரோட வாழ்க்கையிலும் ஒரு சம்பவம் இருக்கும். அது நல்லதாகவும் இருக்கலாம், நாம விரும்பாததாகவும் இருக்கலாம்.

அப்படி ராஜேந்திரன் பல வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு தன்னோட சொந்த ஊருக்குத் திரும்பும் போது அங்க நடக்குற அமானுஷ்யங்களும், அதன் காரணங்கள் தான் சிதம்பர ரகசியம்.

சித்தர்கள், ஐந்து தலை நாகம், ஏடுகள், ரசவாதம்னு இந்த காலத்துல நம்ப முடியாத பல விஷயங்களை உள்ளடக்கியது. நான் சித்தர்கள் பற்றி முன்னாடியே படிச்சாலும், எனக்கு இதுல நம்பிக்கை உண்டுங்குறதால எனக்கு இது ஒரு நல்ல அனுபவம்.

எனக்குக் கதையை விட ஒவ்வொரு அத்தியாயத்தின் தொடக்கத்தில் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட அந்த 2 வரிகள் தான் புத்தகத்தைக் கீழே வச்சிட்டு யோசிக்க வைத்தது.

'உருவம் இல்லா அருவம் நான்
உலகின் இரண்டு துருவமும் நான்'
இது எளிதாகவே புரியுறது தான்.

'ஜீவர்களுக்குள்ளே ஜீவன் நான்.
மூவர்களுக்குள்ளே முடிவும் நான்.'

-இதில் ஒவ்வொரு உயிருக்குள்ளும் இருக்கும் ஜீவன் நான்னு எழுதியிருக்காரு. மனிதனுக்குள்ளனு எழுதல. ஜீவன்னு எழுதியிருக்காரு. அப்போ கடவுள்ங்குறவரு மனிதனுக்குள் மட்டுமல்ல, எல்லா உயிருக்குள்ளும் இருக்காரு. So we are part of God aka god is a part of us.
-இதிலேயே மூவர்களுக்குள்ளே முடிவும் நான் என்பது சிவன், பிரம்மா, விஷ்ணுவைக் குறிக்கிறதா எனக்குத் தோணுச்சு. இப்படி இந்த கடவுள், அந்த கடவுள்னு பிரிக்காம, எல்லாமே ஒன்னு தான்னு சொல்றது போல எனக்குத் தோணுச்சு.


இன்னொரு முக்கியமான வரி,
'ஓதுவார் மேனியில் சாம்பலும் நான்
ஒன்பது வாசல் மேனியின் சகலமும் நான்'

ஒன்பது வாசல் மேனி என்பது மனிதர்கள் தான். அந்த மனிதருக்குள் இருக்கும் எல்லாமே நான் தான் என்னும் வரி எல்லாம் விளக்கவே முடியாது.

'வேதியர் வாழ்வில் வேதமும் நான்,
அரவாணியர் மேனியில் பேதமும் நான்'
-எல்லாமே நான் தான்டா. அந்த பேதம் இந்த பேதம்னு சொல்லி அவங்கள கஷ்டப்படுத்தாம, வாழுங்கடானு கடவுளே வந்து அறையுற மாதிர�� இருக்குல்ல?

ஏன்னு தெரியல. ஆனா, இந்த வரிகள்ல தான் நான் ரொம்ப நேரம் உக்காந்துருந்தேன். இப்போ கடவுளே இல்லனு சொன்னாலும் அத சொல்ல வைக்குறதும் கடவுள் தானானு.

கடைசியா ஒரு favorite வரி.
'தன்னையறியாமல் என்னை அறியவே முடியாது.
என்னை அறியாமல் தன்னை அறியவே முடியாது.'

சித்தர்கள் ஆன்மிகம் என்ற எழுத்தாளரின் பழக்கப்பட்ட பாணியில் கதை நகர்கின்றது. அடிப்படை கருத்துக்கள் இவைகள் என்றாலும் வித்தியாசமான கதைக்களம் வாசிப்பை விறுவிறுப்பாக கொண்டு செல்கிறது. 250 பக்கங்கள் கிட்ட வரும் இந்த புத்தகம் சற்றும் சலிப்பு தராமல் நகர்கின்றது. ராஜேந்திரனின் மக்களில் தெரியும் மாற்றங்கள் அதிகமாக கதையின் சுவாரஸ்யாவும் அதிகரிக்கிறது. இரண்டு மூன்று கதாபாத்திரங்களை வைத்து ஆரம்பிக்கும் கதையில் திடீரென்று ஏகப்பட்ட பாத்திரங்கள் வந்து போகின்றன. இருந்தும் கதையின் வேகத்தை எந்த அளவிலும் இது பாதிக்கவில்லை. ஒரு படம் பார்க்கின்ற போல் எண்ணம். இருந்தும் கதை சற்று அவசரப்படுத்தியது போல் தோன்றியது. சில கேள்விகளுக்கு பதில் தெரியாமலே போனது போல் ஓர் உணர்வு,

விறுவிறுப்பாக நகரும் கதைகளை வசிப்பவர்களுக்கு இந்த புதினம் ஒரு நல்ல வாசிப்பாக அமையும். அனைவராலும் வேகமாக ஒரு முறை வாசிக்க தகுந்த ஒரு புத்தகம்.

அமானுஷ்யம், மர்மம் கலந்த ஒரு நாவல். சித்தர்கள் தங்கள் கற்றறிந்ததை ஓலைச்சுவடிகளில் எழுதி ஒரு பெட்டியில் அடைத்து வைத்து ஒரு வீட்டில் வைத்து பாதுகாத்து வருகின்றனர். ஓலைச்சுவடிகள் இருக்கும் விபரம் அறியாமல் வீட்டின் தற்போதைய உரிமையாளர் ராஜேந்திரன் சென்னையில் இருந்து இந்த வீட்டையும் சில நிலபுலன்களையும் விற்க வருகிறார். வீட்டில் சில அமானுஷ்யங்கள் நிகழ்கின்றன. வீட்டில் அறிய ஓலைகள் நிறைந்த பேட்டி இருப்பதை அறிந்து சில நபர்கள் அதை அபகரிக்க முயல்கிறார்கள்.

ராஜேந்திரன் வீட்டை விற்றாரா, ஓலை சுவடிகள் என்னவாயின என்பதை சில மர்மங்கள், அமானுஷ்யங்கள், சித்தர்களின் சித்து விளையாட்டுகள் என்று சுவாரசியமாக கூற முயற்சி செய்திருக்கிறார் ஆசிரியர். ஆரம்பம் தடதடக்கும் வேகத்தில் சென்றாலும் போக போக ஒரு தேக்கம் இருக்கிறது. கதை இப்போது முடிய போகிறது அப்போது முடிய போகிறது என்று கண்ணாமூச்சி ஆடுகிறது. ஒகே வகை என்று சொல்லலாம்.

"புரியலையா... அப்ப சரி!"

"என்ன... அப்ப சரி? குழப்பு குழப்புன்னு குழப்பி விட்டுட்டு, 'புரியலையா... சரி'ன்னா என்னய்யா அர்த்தம்?"

This quote towards the end of this book pretty much sums up my reading experience. Too many supernatural elements at play and characters in the book who seek logical answers are given divergent answers, "Sonna puriyathu, anubavikkanum". In the end, I'm left with a lot 'Whys'!

If you are a believer in the supernatural, this may be an interesting read.
