Puss in Boots, a fractured fairytale musical, is a tale of conquering fears, finding your truth, discovering your strengths, and standing for what you believe in, with lots of fun along the way. With 11 original songs, this classic fairytale is transformed into a hilarious adventure that will have the listener feeling like they're front row center at a Broadway show. Narrated by Jim Dale and a full cast, and written and created by the award-winning team behind Spin: The Rumpelstiltskin Musical, this audiobook is a treat for the whole family.
WHAT AN AMAZING PRODUCTION!!! This audiobook musical was FANTASTIC! I loved every song, the story was so entertaining, and I can’t wait to listen again and show this musical audiobook to all the kids in my family. What a great fun-and-family-friendly book!
A fun listen with distinctive voices and amusing nods to popular culture. Great for in the car. Musical numbers not deep but definitely could see how this would be a great musical for a kids’ production.
Perfect for the whole family! The music is amazing and there are some modern additions to the fairy tale that will make you chuckle. The amazing Jim Dale is fantastic, of course, but the voice of the princess (she sounds like Elsa!) and Puss really impressed me. Those Hipsterians.... lol
Having read “Puss in Boots” and thus being acquainted with the story, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this musical audiobook was not just a simple adaptation of the fairy tale with music, but a slight modernization and reinterpretation of it. Naturally, all we expect of Puss in Boots is there – a dying father gifts his youngest son with a talking cat and a single farthing to make his way, and thanks to Puss’ ingenuity and resourcefulness, the son ends up rich, with a castle, and marrying the princess – but there are a number of fun surprises along the way. There are nods to modern terms and people, such as the Court of Food and the people (hipsters) of Hipsteria, but also modern ideas which flow seamlessly into the story. The most evident one is perhaps how Princess Penelope wants a say in whom she marries, and learns from her mother that despite it being a man’s world, women have power too. The various songs and repeated choruses (“where there’s a will there’s a way”, “tattletale”, “chop, saw” among others) are catchy and uplifting and really just pure fun. I thought I’d be listening to this book across a day or two, but instead I modified my day’s plans to accommodate listening to the book with only the briefest of pauses to change activities while I listened. This audiobook musical is also good for children, over several sittings depending on their attention span, as it has the organic messages of Puss in Boots plus modern ones and the whole presented in a fun, catchy way. Adults, parents or no, will enjoy the classic tale in a new way with its musical numbers and atmosphere-creating sound effects, while laughing aloud for the little additions here and there of modern relevance.
I received a free audiobook copy through a drawing sponsored by the publisher. This has not affected my rating or review of the book.
This was fun and short. I liked that the MC had to think, but I didn't like that he kept lying and that the cat kept encouraging him to lie. Still, everything was so outlandish (nobody noticed that Puss was a cat because he dressed so well) that I couldn't take it too seriously.
An audiobook adaptation of a musical. Jim Dale does a wondrous job as the narrator and the plot and story are silly enough for little ones to enjoy but complex enough for older children and adults could gain additional humor from puns. Less than 3 hours and perfect for a short road trip.
For ages 8-12. This story is quite a retelling, and does not stick closely to the original. It also includes some modern references for humor. There are other humorous parts, very good songs, good singers, good cast, enjoyable sound effects, and it was nice to hear Jim Dale narrating. There was no actual violence and a good message. I didn't give it more stars because I felt that a lot of humor was over kids' heads, but I didn't really find it funny, either; more eye-rolling. I do believe in using challenging vocabulary for children, so as not to dumb down their books, but this story and the song lyrics had so many idioms and references, that kids wouldn't understand--and some parents who are not as old as I am! There was some French, and unusual vocab that would also pose the same problem. The only one that comes to mind right now is "nouveau riche". If a child stopped the CD to ask their parents what that means, how many would know? I'm worried a child would get frustrated that they didn't understand what was going on. I would be happy to be proven wrong.
Such fun audio musical. The story of puss and boots brought to life through music and songs and Jim Dale’s stellar voice! A fun listen on hoopla sure to entertain .
Similar to Spin: The Rumpelstiltskin Musical adaptation, this would make an excellent storytime for kids. The songs aren't particularly catchy, but Jim Dale and the rest of the cast keep the story fun. I've never read the original Puss in Boots story, so I'm not sure how this version compares. I'm sure that they took some liberties to fit the songs in and make the story more relatable to a modern audience. I'll have to find the original at some point to see how much they changed.
