Killers, Stalkers and Survival Yield High Romance!
This Harlequin Love Inspired Mystery was a great buy with four stories with the a few of the best Christian Faith writers of Lenora Worth, Valerie Hansen and Terri Reed.
In SURVIVING CHRISTMAS by Valerie Hansen, we meet veteran Sean Murray who is battling PTSD and his adorable 6 year old son Patrick who has gone through a horrible ordeal. Sean has lost has confidence in his ability and is worried for his son's well being after the death of his wife. He calls upon his old college friend Zoe Trent for help.
K-9 officer Zoe Trent is Desert Valley Arizona training with her Belgian Tervuren Freya and is filling in for the regular police officers that are on vacation. Zoe is married to the job and has always been in love with Sean since college. But it was not meant to be. Zoe is willing to help Sean out as his home was broken into in Ohio and someone had tried to kill him. However, Zoe not only keeps him safe but helps Sean with Patrick and his PTSD along with a sweet and friendly dog Angel.
The book has faith and belief as a central theme. It handles the subject of trauma and PTSD very well. The backstories of each of the characters was nicely done as well. Even the characters from the next story make an appearance. I figured out the mystery but not until close to the end. The action sequences had one on their seat.
In HOLIDAY HIGH by Lenora Worth, the sweet romance is extended with a civilian and a K-9 officer. Josie Callahan is running from her past and has been abused by her loved ones. However, she has a giving and tender heart and loves kids. Along with her aunt, Marilyn, she has opened up a daycare center that provides a valuable service to Desert Valley residents.
In contrast, K-9 officer Dalton West has closed his heart due to a tragedy. However, his daughter Maisy is a gem and loves taking care of others. Dalton is very protective and when Josie receives frightening threats, he goes above and beyond his duty to keep her safe.
In this book, the mystery was a little harder to figure out due to the twists and turns. Still it became very clear before the end. The idea of faith and healing were depicted very well. The supporting characters were few but they played their roles well. Really enjoyed the honesty and thoughtfulness between Josie and Dalton. In the book, you can feel the Christmas spirit as well.
A KILLER CHRISTMAS by Lenora Worth features a murder investigation. FBI K-9 agent Nina Atkins has a slight chip on her shoulder where she wants to prove her worth to her colleagues and her family. On a night time run with her Rottweiler Sam, who is an expert cadaver dog, Nina stumbles upon a crime that starts out this intriguing story.
US Marshal Thomas Grant has arrived all the way from Texas to Montana in pursuit of a hitman. As the crime scene is secured and being investigated, Thomas has a sixth sense and meets Nina! Once their lives are put in danger together, Nina and Thomas realize that in order to solve the crime they have to team up and that takes the reader on an amazing ride.
In this story, Thomas is adorable, sweet, protective, funny and upstanding. Nina is brilliant and courageous. However, sometimes her constant chattering and questions were rather annoying. I was not a big fan of the female protagonist but her bravery made her likeable.
With all these types of books, I am usually able to to figure out the culprit. And this tale was no different. However, the back story was very detailed and suspenseful. I have always enjoyed Lenora's writing style, and this book was great! Don't expect too much Christmas though.
The last story, YULETIDE STALKING by Terri Reed was beautiful. I wasn't looking forward to this story as much. However, this story was surprising and heartfelt.
FBI Agent Tim Ramsey along with his German Shepard partner, Frodo are fire investigators. Tim is on an important assignment where there are numerous arsons occurring around Billings, Montana. Tim has figured out the start of the fires but the criminal keeps escaping until Vickie Petrov.
Bakery store co-owner Vickie Petrov has changed herself due to a horrible event in her college life. She has become quite subdued and socially avoids everyone. The night that she is helping out at the shelter, she is accosted but bravely fights back to save herself. She is the one witness that can maybe help Tim figure out who the arsonist is and save the business owners in Billings from damaging fires. And that starts the story of Tim and Vickie that is sweet and slow building but quite romantic.
There is a Christmas feel through out the story. I was able to figure out the mystery but it was still great to read and intricately woven. The action scenes and all the supporting character truly added to the story. Also, the Christian faith aspect was nicely depicted.
If you enjoy clean romance with a slow build and faith wrapped it in a suspenseful mystery, this is the book for you. Enjoy the Christmas feel too!
Two K-9 officers and two FBI officers with their K-9 find love with the ones that they are helping.
Loved being with these authors again. Sean and Zoe story was exciting from start to finish. Little Patrick was a real sweetie. So glad that Sean and Patrick were able to get the help by way of Zoe and Angel. Freya was a big help in catching who wanted to hurt Sean and Patrick. In the midst of it all Zoe and Sean found love. Dalton and Josie story was exciting too. Someone was after Josie. It took Dalton and Luna to find the culprit. Little Missy was a big help to Josie and Dalton too. Dalton had been in love with Josie from the start and Masks needed a mother. Nina and Thomas, story was exciting from start to finish. A political figure went after three girls to shut them up. But when Nina her dog Sam and Thomas got on the trail to help their lives were put on the line. But right prevailed. As they worked together love bloomed. Vicki and Tim story was exciting from start to finish. Vicki past came up to haunt her and tried to take her out. But with Tim his dog Frodo they kept her safe and the person was caught. Love also came into the picture.
I was all set to enjoy this story by Terri Reed, hoping against hope that maybe this time, just once, I wouldn't encounter the nail-screeching phrase and terminology that this author uses; however, not even into the meat of the third chapter, unsuspectingly, there it was. Why oh why does this author have to use this phrase when talking about sexual arousal "her tummy all fluttery" after the officer smiled at her. What is going on with this author? We're full-blown adults here reading these books. Can the author not find other descriptives rather than 'fluttery in my tummy'? The character is a full-grown woman, for goodness' sake. Of course, keep it clean and respectful, but don't use a word like tummy when describing being sexually aroused. It's creepy. I'm out. I will not even try to read another one of this author's books. They all contain that same type of phrase all the way through all of them. Cringeworthy and bizarre.
This was a great story! It seems to be part of a series. I read a couple of the books in this series and the ones I read were very good. This one takes place at Christmastime.
