上篇结合具体的社会文化条件，对印刷术的产生原因和时间，做出了合理的说明。中篇深入考述唐宪宗元和年间是否以雕版印刷的方式大量刊印元稹和白居易的诗集，研究指出，印刷术由民间文化层面进入上层精英文化领域，是唐代末年至五代时期发生的事情。下篇集中论述活字印刷中的铜活字问题。
