Cassie grew up in a small town at the very tip of southern Illinois. A tomboy, she spent most of her time outside and got into big trouble for breaking the trellis while climbing out her second-story bedroom window.
When her family moved to L.A., major culture shock ensued. She discovered that grapefruits grew on trees, television offered more than two channels, and all the other girls had breasts. While hiding out and waiting for her chest to develop, she read voraciously, raiding her mother's bookshelf for Mickey Spillane when she finished all her Nancy Drew novels.
Another move took her family to Denver, the place Cassie still calls home.
She graduated from North Central college outside Chicago, got married, and returned to Colorado where she worked in personnel at the Denver Post and lived in a mountain cabin without running water. Upon learning she was pregnant, a return to civilization seemed prudent. She settled in Denver, raised two amazing daughters, and started writing for Harlequin. After her divorce, she took a break from romance and wrote straight suspense.
During her frantic years as a single mom, writing books and working odd jobs to supplement her income, she hardly had time to breathe, much less to dream. Then something remarkable happened. She fell in love with a tall, sexy man who was an aerial photographer and the author of tough-guy mystery novels. Fortunately, he loved her back. She found her real-life hero, inherited three more grown kids and three grandchildren.
Cassie started writing romance again, loving every minute of a life filled with laughter, crazy road trips, sailboats, and journeys to Oregon with long walks on rocky beaches.
Not too long ago, the love of her life developed inoperable pancreatic cancer. With supportive friends and family standing by, he died at home.
Cassie now lives alone, surrounded by beautiful memories. She has no regrets and considers herself lucky to have found her soul mate, the man with whom she shared a perfect love.
This is a mystery sort plot with suspense and a secondary romance plot, well not technically a romance plot because it was very minor and not what I expected.
But here is the crux of it : It is set in New Orleans, which I loved because it describes the atmosphere of the city and celebrations of Day of the Dead. It sorts of gets immersive in the first few chapters with the setting. The mystery starts off when Alyssa gets an anonymous text telling her to meet the person who is messaging her at the celebrations. She is a witsec person and ends up meeting with this pirate disguised man who turns out to be a private detective who was asked to keep an eye on her.
They hit it off, and they had chemistry, tbh but it was the scorching hot romance or chemistry I wanted, thus the rating. The book is heavy on the mystery plot. Lots of secrets, lots of people are raising from the dead.
There was a part where I thought was too info dumpy with the history of the male character pirate ancestors or whatever, it got me slightly bored.
Overall, I quite enjoyed reading this, it's well written and decently immersive in it's setting of New Orleans. There were plenty of moment that had my eyes widen in shock and anticipation.
However I can only find myself giving three stars due to the fact that I reached a point about 80% in and thought "how are they going to figure all this out in only X pages?" And then I still felt that way coming right up on the end. And it felt rushed. The climax of the story felt rushed and all the intimate detail that had entranced me through the majority of the book is gone, it just shoved me along to the conclusion.
There isn't much of a romantic build up between Alyssa and Rafe at all, the chemistry is there and I love reading them together, but there's no build up.
Not to mention that being set in New Orleans, while there's a healthy dose of Black representation, there's also a handful of questionable lines that made me a little uncomfortable to read knowing it was a white woman writing it in the context of- or being said by a Black character.
This book was a mystery set in the city of New Orleans. This story revolves around a woman named Alyssa Bailey. She is in WITSEC. She is in the French Quarter during a Dia de los Muertos parade. Some bad guys dressed up like skeletons try to abduct her. Luckily investigator Rafe Fournier comes to her rescue.
Alyssa is unsure who she can trust. She turns to Rafe to help her investigate who is after her to hurt her. Rafe and Alyssa go around the French Quarter to escape the people who are after Alyssa. This story tells also about the history of New Orleans including talk of voodoo and of Hurricane Katrina. I enjoyed reading this story even though there wasn’t any spicy 🌶️ 🌶️🌶️ scenes. This story was fun to read.
My mom’s been reading HQ romances for years so I finally decided I ought to read one too. I’m so glad I picked this one. I like my romance with a big of action, some flare and HQ intrigue seemed like a good choice and it was!
A really good, easy to gobble up story, I’ve never finished a book this fast. I absolutely loved the setting of NOLA,Ames me want to go there even more now. Rafe and Alyssa were good characters and the mystery started right off the bat. I’ll will definitely be getting into some more.
Not to mention the cover is really pretty and eerie to look at. I need to movie to NO and find myself a hot, pirate descendent turned private investigator stat! :)
Another great story from Cassie Miles! She truly knows how to deliver the right balance between mystery and romance. New Orleans was the perfect setting for the story between Alyssa and Rafe. He's a hottie right from the start while she's got tons of spunk to put Rafe in his place. Loved the chemistry between them. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse for them, they were off on another adventure with lots of twists to the story. It was a page-turner till the end. I don't want to give away any surprises :) Cassie is an excellent writer and I can't wait for the next book!
Alyssa Bailey is on the run when she realizes that one of her protectors in the witness protection program is really out to protect her. When she encounters Rafe Fornier, she doesn't know he used to be an FBI agent, but his skills come in handy when he decides to help her, having been hired to do so by a man who may not be who he seems.
With the background of New Orleans, even voodoo is part of the story as they escape time after time from being killed, even as they encounter the bodies of others and learn who killed her mother.
This is the first book I've read from Cassie Miles and it's a great story. Alyssa Bailey is on the run when she realizes that one of her protectors in the witness protection program is really out to protect her. She's weary of a man named Rafe Fornier, who wants to help her. The only problem is she doesn't know he used to be and FBI Agent and she doesn't know who to trust. Cassie also p[anted a great picture of New Orleans. The characters were well-written, the plot had many twists and the ending was superb.
The problem with these books is they're aurally pretty good and almost well developed but if you added 20 more pages to give me some more details and spell it all out for me id be in love. This one was cute and French and Cajun and adorable.
The first 80% of this book introduces the characters and buildis up the story very well. Then the last 20 pages rushes the climax and ending of the book. I wish the author would have put more time into the ending to make it worth reading the entire book.
