Elle and gang are in the one place they never expected to find themselves. Hell. Literally. There's a dark force stirring. One that's killed thousands during its time. It's been asleep for eons but it's awakening now. The question is why? And how can Elle stop another mass genocide from impacting all of Grimm? Together there's a chance she and Crowley and Hatter can defeat this terrible darkness, but the beast is always one step ahead of them, using their own fears against them. Friends, lovers, allies... Elle's not sure she can trust any of them right now, not with the darkness playing games with them and yet to stop the creature's game they must overcome their darkest impulses. Stopping the darkness might just be the single most difficult thing Elle's ever done, but if she doesn't figure out how to solve his macabre riddles in time all of Grimm could suffer.
Selene Charles is the pen name of a NY Times and USA Today bestselling author.
She is an avid penguin sweater knitter. She believes that unicorns really do exist and that skittles aren't really candy at all. She enjoys skydiving in the arctic, chatting with her polar bear friends around a warm campfire while sipping on warm cocoa, and she used to work in a travelling carnival which is where she got all these crazy ideas from. Only two of these statements are actually true.

Arielle and crew trying to put a stop to the Darkness before large scale deaths in Hell was the mission in this book. It's somewhat solved but not quite in the way expected since Crowley takes the Darkness within himself. Makes me wonder what will happen to him and his life since he used the last one and died prior to the cohabitation of him in his body. After a bunch of messing around and going back and forth, Crowley gets his stuff together at the end when it comes to his feelings and what he wants with Arielle. His wolf made up it's mind separately, the man was conflicted when it came to sharing Arielle with Hatter. In the end, I was glad to see it settled.
The relationship between Arielle and Hatter, with her being his queen means that they'll have to quit Grimm PD since there's a no fraternization policy, or at least that's what they try to go. Turns out Marcel, the commissioner, has something else in mind for Arielle, Hatter, Hook, Crowley, and her mother. Ich and his new partner join the new task force that Arielle has been asked to lead and the plan is that they'll stay in Wonderland together. I'm not sure how that'll work, seeing as how Hatter is the demon king of Hel, a realm that seems to need its leader and he's been absent from Hel for over 200 years. There was talk in this book of him returning to pick up his duties so I certainly was expecting more a kind of happily ever after for him, Arielle, and Crowley since Hook rejected Arielle but not to be here, there's still some story left before this tale ends. It's good that Arielle and crew were asked to work the task force because it maybe exonerates them from the laws they broke collectively.
Some things that were a little difficult with this book was much of the wondering what was happening with the Darkness's influence. The lack of information communicated to Arielle, particularly given that Hatter faced it in the past when the Darkness overtook his sister whom he then had to kill. I kept waiting for some wisdom or direction from Hatter to compare this time to the others in the past but it only came sparingly which was a little disappointing. We don't learn what was on one of his visions that Arielle chooses not to see and he doesn't share which makes me consider what may have been missed. Arielle with her three being makeup (demon, siren, and witch) is something that the author hasn't fully explored which is a little disappointing but I liked the changes to Arielle's physical body and abilities that came of them.
With the close of book 3 of this series, I was wondering what next the characters would do. I did not really expect this. In The Devil’s In The Details the tone of the series gets very dark. And when I say dark, I mean extremely dark. I mean, come on, they’re in Hell so… Duh!
Elle, Hatter and Crowley have been sent there to deal with a very dark entity who was the reason behind an horrific genocide in Hell eons ago. But nobody knows why it is awakening again now and what it wants. The dark being is using their own fears against them and they have to figure out a way to stop it before all of Grimm is lost.
I liked the direction this book took regarding Elle’s romantic interests. Hatter, aka Maddox, shows himself to be very understanding of her needs and wants. His solution was a bit unorthodox but this series is not exactly the most orthodox series so it was fitting.
In this book, I saw a different side of Crowley and learnt a lot more about his origin which made me look at him with new eyes. I wonder what will happen to him with the new changes in book 5.
My only issue was the grammatical errors. There are more of them in books 3 and 4 than the previous books. Or maybe I’m only just noticing them. Either way, another round of proofreading would have gotten rid of most of them.
I do like this series and will be continuing to book 5 whenever it comes out. Anyone who likes fantasy and romance will enjoy these books but be warned that they are very dark.
Violence: Very violent scenes with blood and gore. Sexual Content: Very intense scenes with graphic descriptions. Profanity: Multiple uses of profanity Religious Themes: Demons, magic and witchcraft are all mentioned in this book. Most of the events in this book happen in Hell Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking: Drinking is mentioned but not enough to get intoxicated
Elle, Hatter, and Crowley find themselves going to Hell, literally, this time. They are being sent to stop a darkness that kills hundreds. I wasn’t sure what to expect after the last book, but this was not it. It was nonstop, unpredictable, dark, and emotional.
While unexpected, I am enjoying the direction this series is going. Elle has changed so much since the first book and her love life has played a big part in that change. We see Hatter being very understanding about Elle’s feelings, especially concerning Crowley and Hook. While it has been hinted throughout the series, we finally start to see the relationships between these three forming (reverse harem fyi). I wonder what will happen next between them, especially if Hook is a part of the next book, because we know she still loves him.
My only issue with this book was that there were quite a bit of grammatical errors. Usually I can overlook them but some of them in this book were very jaring. It won’t stop me from reading the next one but I do hope she updates the manuscript and fixes those errors for future readers.
I can’t wait to read the next one, which I hope I don’t have to wait long for.
I am not disappointed! This book had me teary-eyed a lot, nervous, and sitting on edge. This series is fantastic, with world building, and truly believable characters. Make sure to read the first 3 books in this series. Selene Charles is my go-to author for recommendations because I just cannot find a book of hers that isn't fabulous. *spoiler*
I really wasn't sure if I would continue to like the relationships moving, but I found myself just loving how Charles' created this story. I'm relieved that the love felt (and read) so natural for each person; and that Elle was completley accepted for who she is.

So...yeah...this novel wasn't as fully fleshed as the previous Grimm novels. For me, anyway. It was a whole lot of flowery language and love triangle-ish problems. If you can even call it problems. Hatter took a definite back seat in everything even though he was present for the whole story. Crowley's epiphany about his feelings seemed forced and rushed. And "beating" the super evil Darkness seemed...boring. Also, there are tons of grammatical errors where I assume the author edited sentences, but didn't finish removing previous words. It was distracting for me. Hoping the next installment is more like the first three books!
Elle is the new Queen of Hel, bride of Maddox, the King. He shared his soul with her when she gave Hook back his own. They are mates and bonded so they can feel each others emotions and feelings.
Their latest case is to travel to Hell, Maddox' brothers realm to stop a genocide that occurs every 200 years. The last time Maddox fought the Darkness, he ended up going crazy because he had to kill his sister to save everyone. The Darkness takes over the body and controls their mind. But this time, he wants someone stronger.
With Elle, Maddox, Crowley on the case who be sacrifice themselves?
I LOVE the series! I just wish the books were longer, the more " Fighting scenes" were more short and straight to the point then I would like. I wish they were more drawn out with more detail then the rest of the "waiting game" that it's more turned into. I feel like the books are getting shorter and shorter when they should be getting longer and have more drawn out fighting scenes. But still love the books.
I really loved books 1-3 and loved how fairy tale characters blended together across the Grimm worlds and how cases were solved. I hated this book because it was completely unlike 1-3. I really liked when this was more about solving cases than focusing on a love triangle. I didn’t read this for it to become a reverse harem and it completely ruined the book for me. The focus suddenly came to be on these very forced relationships with juvenile dialogue. Ugh.
Well i didnt see that coming. Elle ends up getting her heart and soul. The darkness, a great evil, is rising again and elle has to go to hell with maddox and crowley to stop it. Except they cant but in a way that was expected. What wasnt expected was the outcome of it all. Very good addition to the series.
I can't get enough of this series. You always know you are in for a good read with Selene's Grimm Files. She creates believable characters, storyline that keep you coming back for more, and just a variety of humor that begs for you to keep reading.
This book is a page turner. I could not put it down! A fractured fairytale at its best! Can not wait to find out out what happens to Hatter, Elle and Crowley in Book 5. Loved it!
Once again Selene Charles has left me craving more. The twists and turns kept me up late at night craving more substance and the ending left me anticipating the next book. Until then...
We have definitely left fairytales with this book. It's gritty and darkly creative. If you've read Kim Harrison's Hollows series, you'll love this book and where the series is going. Twists in plot that I didn't see coming at all.
Elle! What a ride! You need to start this series from the beginning but you wont regret it. The highs, the lows, what a rollercoaster! I cant wait to see what happens next. Better with every book!
This installment was good, continued with intrigue and crimes to solve. Looking foward to their next adventure and how they resolve their issues and if that's possible.
Good to catch up with the team in this, the fourth book of The Grimm Files. Though still a good story, a few bits seemed hurried and could have done with a bit more detail. Great set up for the next book.
Wow, I did not see that coming at all. Darn it I liked Bo too! Ugh, well that was one hell of an adventure through hell for them and it was crazy. I definitely cried a little too. I can't wait to read the next one and find out what happens now.
No spoilers. Some authors struggle to build one world, these stories take you across several with amazing characters. I can't wait to see what happens next.
