Hello folks, My name is Solomon Carter, and I am the author of the Roberts and Bradley PI crime thriller series, The Last Line international thriller series, the DI Hogarth Darkest series and more. I write mysteries, crime and thriller novels and more besides.
I was born in Southend, Essex and lived there for most of my life apart from eventful student days in South London. But my life in Southend was even more eventful still. I ended up working in a string of jobs including as a jobcentre clerk, a book seller, tutor for youth with low skills and low self esteem, mortgage broker, and latterly manager of a food bank which dealt with all kinds of interesting people facing all kinds of eye-opening, jaw dropping problems. Because of these ear-to-the-ground jobs the majority of my novels are set in Southend. In 2016 I moved to North Cornwall because I liked the idea of never-ending holidays - but I also write almost every single day. My aim is to write action-packed thrillers and page-turning mysteries that readers love and my hope is to get better at what I do with every book across each and every year.
I like to give away lots of free books as part of what I do. If you would like to receive some of these and get the exclusives on offer, than you're invited to join my free readers group at SolomonCarter.net. I won't spam you, just send the occassional email with news on the latest books and forthcoming freebies.

What I am good at: telling stories What I am bad at: dancing, being patient. What I love: nature, the seaside, adventures Writers I heartily recommend: Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais. Writers I need to read more of: Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and others. Other things I do beside writing: at present I like to keep my running going to balance out the sitting behind a laptop (a habit inspired by Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running' - a great book). -I am currently doing surf lessons. When in Rome, as they say... -Getting out into nature as the weather allows.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then I'll keep on writing. Or running. Or surfing. Or chasing my children around the house.
All the very best, Solomon :)
PS if you have enjoyed any of my books, I'd be honoured if you could post a review. Those reviews really do help!
Two thieves, two murders and lots of suspense: British style.
Dan Bradly and Eva Roberts continue to plod through the not so prim and proper English countryside in pursuit of the evildoers.
A break in at a jewelry seller/collector's house, missing ancient and antique pieces of art lead to murder and more intrigue. A father who does not care for, and protect his son seeks the return of his property.
He hires Eva and Dan to finds his treasures. Mr. Clancy's son Joe wants them to find his friend, a preacher who is fighting against drug smugglers.
A man selling cheap copies of famous clothing lines is involved and is murdered on the beach. To confuse things a little there was also the theft of a Saxon wing's treasure.
Turns out that Joe has become hooked on a new drug "Ubers" which happens to b e the drug being smuggled into town. This creates more problems for our heroes.
Our friend DI Hogarth enters into the mix, as he battles and at same time helps Eva and Dan. At times he is about to arrest them, then gives them information to help them.
Solomon Carter continues to keep us guessing and turning pages. His well written plots and developed characters are a delightful read time after time. The series is growing quickly, and his fame is spreading quickly. Join in the fun and read every book.
I have a long-standing admiration for this writer. He provides a steady stream of readable stories. Heaven knows, we need people who can do that at present. Yes, there are often typos and if he spent eighteen months polishing and honing each offering until it shone like a jewel there would only be six titles to enjoy - instead of sixty. Roberts and Bradley don't argue any more than any normal couple. None of the story threads about drugs, organised crime or domestic abuse are fantasy. This is real life for many people. Enjoy this slice of easy-to-read escapism, accept its flaws and be thankful there will be another instalment in no time flat. No complaints from this reader.
Between Two Thieves: Trilogy, Book 1 ~ Some authors tell a story ~ others weave a story ~ yet others braid a story. Mr. Carter has gone beyond to reverse French braid this trilogy! Not only has he brought in the usual Police 'frenemies' (always fun to 'see DI Hogarth outside of his own narrative! Wish he could've made an end-of-story-appearance, even by phone!), he's managed to intricately entwine new & old characters, as well as plots to drive each book ~ as well as overarching two and three of the books at the same time. Masterful ~ simply Masterful!!! CanNOT wait for more of his writing!
I don't really know if Mr. Carter intended this book's audience to be teenagers, but that's the way it struck me. The dialog, slang, and sentence structure. After starting the book and forming that opinion, I looked online to see if that was his intent, but didn't find any indication of it. I WILL say that I TOTALLY appreciated the lack of graphic sex and objectionable language - I feel that there's too much of that in many books today (my personal opinion).
I felt that the plot was somewhat simplistic and the characters somewhat "shallow". I'm not very prone to having great insights, but I figured out the book's conclusion ahead of time. The book has a minor cliff-hanger at the end so you have to purchase "Between Two Thieves #2" which I believe may be "Cuts Two Ways". The cliff-hanger wasn't so blatant that it destroyed the book though; the book stands on its own.
I received this book from Amazon free and I have some more on my Kindle by Mr. Carter. It remains to be seen if I want to try him again. I usually don't make up my mind about an author until I read 2 or 3 of their books, so I may read another one to see if I change my opinion.
I like the whole storyline, but found it was slow to build up, so if you like fast paced thrillers this may not be for you. I feel that the pace reflected the challenge faced by Eva and Dan in trying to solve the mysteries. The plot shows how frustrating it must be for any investigator - whether police or PI - to solve a case when there is so little information to go on. I must admit I didn't guess the culprit, until the time they were revealed I had no idea who it would be, so that really kept me guessing. I liked the introduction of the next case (Lauren) into this book as a means to keep me reading onto book 2. I'm knocking a star off because my Kindle copy had some typographical errors and a possible factual error (Strangers on a Train / Brief Encounter), but overall, if you like steady thoughtful PI's this series is for you.
Another great story from the PI team, Eva and Dan. This time it's about drugs, stolen items and things in between.
A wallet is found, which leads the team to another case. It has twists and turns and all manner of things that don't make sense, yet...
It has plenty of action, a good plot and characters that fit well into the story. It centres around Southend and a few other places in Essex (England) and I like that fact because it's more real than some fiction stories out there.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would like to continue with the mini-series - I will, eventually when finances allow.
I rated this a very good read. This was a killer mystery that I found myself trying to figure out two-folds; the drug dealers and the murderers. I knew their was more lying, scheming, and mystery with the murders. Joe was too needy and nerdy. Georgie was more too nurturing for a young girl, but both were worried characters. True detectives of this story were real crime solvers, reminding me of Columbo with Peter Falk, the tv series. A very good suspenseful thriller to enjoy.
Thank you Mr Carter i have become a fan of yours i usually download books randomly from the internet and by chance was fortunate enough to get this one after starting to read I recognized your writing style and the characters i had thoroughly enjoyed the first one I read and have found this one to be equally so! I will be looking for more of your reads thank you again
When I started reading this book I had no idea that it was the beginning of a series of I would never had started it. Now though enough had been told about the next book that you for want to be left hanging. Also there was a lot of repetition so this made the book seem to go on & on. I did skip forward here & there. The book did have a good plot & a surprising ending making it interesting.
I like the fast pace of this book which is typical of the series. A good plot with familiar characters which is a sort of short cut for long intros. I always enjoy the two leading characters who seem to take great risks to get to the truth, hope they can take some time out to enjoy some normal life soonish.
This book moved slowly, and while it was perhaps to simulate the frustration of a real investigation, it made for a long, almost boring book. I’ve usually found that lots of dialogue makes a book faster to read, but this dialogue really slowed things done and tended to be repetitive. There was a bit of excitement at the end.
Normally I love British detective books, but this one did not leave me wanting more of these people. I thought Mark and Joanna were a cute couple, and Eve and dan were growing on me. I like Hogarth as the crusty dI, Somehow the plot had too many twist and turns and there were too many villains. The ending was exciting .
An excellent very will written romantic thriller mystery in the series. The characters are interesting and will developed. The story line is fast moving and complicated with lots of misdirection leading to the violent conclusion. I would recommend this series to readers of mysteries. Enjoy reading 🔰2021 🎒😯
If you haven't read any of Solomon carter's books before you are in for a treat. A wonderful writer who keeps you on the edge of your seat. Beware though once you have read one of his books you will want to read the complete library 📚📖📖
The two main characters are very likeable. Easy to follow plots lines ideal sort of book for the holidays or to read a chapter at a time as late night reading. Always enjoy this author's books
Absorbing how I was drawn in to the story it lead you through a believe able sequence of events that came to an unexpected finale that all fitted together beautifully
I'll certainly read more by this author. His plot and story were great and I kept reading long after I should have been asleep. Kept my mind occupied and off the fact that I was in lockdown due to virus.
long, slow, and predictable. Two unjoined stories, one has nothing to do with the another. Clue less policies, no brain teenagers, a village lived in the past, it is not a good read.
First time I’ve read anything by Solomon Carter but I was hooked from the first page until the last. Love the characters of Eva and Dan and will definitely be reading more of these stories. Thank you for an awesome escape whilst we’re in these crazy times.
I enjoy every book I read by this author. The stories are always so well written and the cheap well described you feel that you actually know them. A cracking read!
A very entertaining page turner which kept my intetest throughout and helped me forget about the virus for a few well spent hours. Very enjoyable plot with enough twists and turns to keep me1 off balance. Thanks
I was sitting on the edge of seat for this one. I thought that I had it all figured out and then it went in a totally different direction. Lots of good twists and turns in this plot.
His books are good the plots flow, and they have all the elements for a good thriller, with jewel heist, murder drugs. Good detectives, with a touch of their personal life. Recommend his books.
First book by Solomon Carter that I have read and it won't be the last. A very good book many twists and turns, and what I like most - No bad language.
