Keep in mind when picking up this book to read, it's not a story. It's a collection of Wednesday's favorite quotes, poems, and stories from famous gothic storytellers such as Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde, Emily Dickinson, Bram Stoker, etc. I loved this collection because it brought me back to why I love gothic literature. It's full of raw emotion with bleak perspectives on life. It's about the dark side of life people choose to ignore while living their "best life." This collection inspired me to take a slight break from contemporary poetry and read classic poetry that have inspired authors and poets for centuries. There is commentary from Wednesday humorously explaining why she loves the poems, stories, and quotes she chooses. I would recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of the Addam's Family and an evener bigger fan of Wednesday Addams.
Molto carino.
Who hasn't had a fascination with Wednesday Addams in at least one point in their lives? The morbid and spooky little goth girl who's obsessed with all things dark and negative like: death, violence, torture, suffering, devastation, misery, gloom, hopelessness, fear and manipulation. And witchcraft. She's arguably more popular than the franchise she came from.
No wonder, since she represents the dark horse and weird social outcast we wish we could be. She is an (oc)cult icon.
'The Addams Family: Wednesday's Library' is a collection of classic gothic poetry and novel quotes, with Wednesday's insightful, sadistic and humourous commentary; on why she loves these literary woes. They include Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Shakespeare, 'Frankenstein', 'The Divine Comedy', 'The Scarlet Letter', 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow', 'Les Miserables', 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', 'Heart of Darkness', 'Dracula', 'The Picture of Dorian Gray', 'Paradise Lost', 'Jane Eyre', 'Wuthering Heights', and the original Grimm fairy tales.
The appeal is strangely fun and intoxicating, even for children. It reminds me of a creepy, ghostly spiritual successor to 'Belle's Library'. Although it is a quick collection read and not anything too special, and on page 57, where Wednesday comments on a quote from 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', there is an illustration from 'Alice in Wonderland' for some reason. There are no other 'Alice in Wonderland' references in the book. Was that a mistake? Also, Wednesday mentions having a school teacher at the beginning, but then later on (page 153) she says she's homeschooled. A teacher for her home?
The accompanying illustrations are nice, simple and eerie, with purple watercolours splashed on to match the purple book cover. They feature scorpions, bats, skulls, ravens, trees, trinkets, snakes, brooms, roses, human organs, and big, staring eyeballs.
Ghosts, vampires, graves, witches, and instruments of torture, oh my!
'Wednesday's Library' - Recommended for the demented child in all of us.
'I never understood why Jane [Eyre] would want to look so... normal. Her looks are perfectly wretched.' - page 133
'Shame, despair, solitude! They are teachers to us all.' - page 125
'This same feeling is typical when you're an Addams. People's fear of the abnormal just makes us stronger.' - page 109
'If there is any goodness inside me, then I'm afraid it is broken. How thrilling.' - page 99
'My sentiments exactly. Why marry when you could satiate your curiosity with things like studying poisonous plants or becoming a country's first female dictator?' - page 87
'The best houses have ghosts living in them.' - page 81
'Witches. Blood. Impending devastation. It's as if William Shakespeare were writing about my life.' - page 45
'I would also follow the directives of insane people. They tend to be the most levelheaded people in the room.' - page 39
This title is separated into three parts - starting out with a list of Wednesdays’ favourite books, the majority of the book consists of a number of quotations from said titles, followed by commentary attributed to Wednesday. The final part of the book holds short summaries of many of the books, alongside information about the authors and their history with commentary from the author.
It’s not bad. It’s a good introduction to gothic-type literature for younger readers, covering many of the well known classical authors and poets. It includes several poems from Poe and Emily Dickinson, as well. The downside here is that, as it covers so many well known authors, for a well-read reader, there isn’t much new or noteworthy material. The new content consists solely of the commentary from “Wednesday” in regards to the quotes - most of which is somewhat amusing.
Overall, it would be a decent introduction for young readers.
I really enjoyed this. I got it as a Christmas gift last year because I’m obsessed with Wednesday Addams. I did not think I’d actually read it, I thought it was gonna be on my shelves, but I’m so glad I did! Getting the little pieces of such classic literature was really enjoyable. I’ve also never read some of the pieces, specifically, most of the stuff by Edgar Allan Poe and I definitely think that’s something missing in my reading history. I ended up annotating a lot of this book because I wanted to put my thoughts down, mark things I really liked and also create my own TBR from it or put my thoughts down on things that I’ve already read. I definitely have some classics to read, and I’m really looking forward to them.
The book was dark, and the quotes were from people that wednesday put in her perspective and with the music that i put in my ears really set the mood, apart from others.
Cute little book for the spooky season but not much to it. She’s very dark and it was humorous but this book wasn’t anything special. I liked the drawings and Edgar Allen Poe stories and quotes the best.
My biggest issue with this is the reading list at the beginning of this book considering this is sold as a children's book. My daughter is 13 and has read some of them such as Dracula, Sleepy Hollow, and Edgar Allan Poe but in editions made for a younger audience. She's still not happy that I won't let her Phantom of the Opera except in a very condensed version in a children's book. But, I would never allow her to read Les Misèrables, Paradise Lost, or The Divine Comedy which is found in the reading list for this book. Who in their right mind would recommend Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness to a child? Then you have the a section of qoutes and writings and on the page next to them are remarks by Wednesday about them. There is one she decides to explain what it meant and it's so obvious she has no clue about it. The qoutes and writings include would definitely not be ones I would recommend to younger reads so it's surprising we ordered this from a book sale when my daughter was in elementary school. It has been sitting on my husband's bookshelf for a very long time. Then there are the responses from Wednesday are also geared towards an older audience unless you really don't mind your child reading about stealing a dead lovers teeth, being worm food, and that funerals are joyous occasions even though it says it's for her family. They even add that life is terrible then you die. Probably not a good thing to say to the kids pretending to be like her especially now that she has become trendy now. I know people will say that it's just as morbid and dark in the movies and tv shows and I agree with you on that. My issue is that this is considered a book for children and should be a book for young adults instead. I am glad that I read it before giving it to my daughter to add to her library.
They're creepy and they're kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They're all together ooky, The Addams Family.
Their house is a museum Where people come to see 'em They really are a scream The Addams Family.
(Neat) (Sweet) (Petite)
So get a witches shawl on A broomstick you can crawl on We're gonna pay a call on The Addams Family.
This book is exactly what is says on the front.. "Delightfully Dark Quotes and Gothic Tales from one Grim Girl"
First of all let's talk about the layout of the book, it's beautiful with the types of writing and the pictures are pretty. I like the pages of the book when it's closed it makes it look so authentic and real. It's gorgeous. It's the little details that bring it altogether. It's like your reading a journal. I love it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. All the quotations and Wednesday's take on the quotes is mesmerising. I even understood how she felt a few times.
The book contains some of Wednesday's favourite poetry from Edgar Allan Poe, as well as quotations from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde oh and of course Bram Stoker's Dracula. As well as others.
It's a nice book I really love it. If your an Addams Family fan or just a general gothic lover you may like this.
I thought this was going to be an easy read since its content was mostly poems, quotes, excerpts from a Classic story. I was wrong. I actually had to reread each content at least twice before I can finally get a grasp of what it really means. Wednesday’s commentaries also helped in understanding the correct context of each content.
I had fun reading this. I’m not a big fan of Classics but reading this book stirred curiosity in me. This made me want to read Dracula, Wuthering Heights, the works of Edward Allan Poe, and etc.
I loved Wednesday Addams since the first time I’ve watched The Addams Family. That’s the reason why I bought this book.
This was cute/fun in concept, but it felt as though the quotes "written by Wednesday" only rang true part of the time. It felt like the author didn't really know much about about the Addams Family except some basic information, and it just really made it fall flat for true fans. I also was hoping there might be some longer excerpts (maybe short stories), instead of it being mostly short (and out of context) quotes.
Overall, a quick and fun thing to flip through for spooky season, but nothing particularly amazing.
A quick collection of quotes and short stories featuring commentary from the curator, Wednesday Addams. Perfect fun read for fans of the Addams family but very light in content - definitely not usable for a student’s book report.
This is a brilliant collection of dark, gothic poetry, short clips of stories, and famous quotes from all the best gothic writers - Wednesday Addam’s Favorites! I enjoyed the book very much. It’s a quick read, with lots of passages from my past.
Wednesday’s Library is a beautifully illustrated tribute to classic gothic horror, with the perfect dose of Wednesday Addams’ macabre humour. It’s marketed as a children’s book (ages 8-12), but honestly, I think it will appeal more to adults who already have an appreciation for gothic literature and Wednesday’s aesthetic.
The concept is really fun — a collection of classic gothic quotes paired with Wednesday’s grim reflections, plus a couple of full Poe poems to set the tone. The design is stunning, with a vintage, spooky vibe that matches Wednesday perfectly. The appendix at the end was a nice touch, listing each book and why Wednesday loves it, which felt like a guide to explore these dark tales further.
That said, I had mixed feelings. Reading it with my 10-year-old, it became clear that the old-fashioned language and heavy themes made it hard for him to engage with. The full poems like The Raven and Annabel Lee felt out of place for the age group and didn’t really land. Even some of the quotes lost their impact without proper context. While it’s meant to be an introduction to gothic literature for kids, it feels more suited to older readers who already know and love these stories.
As a Wednesday fangirl, I had fun with it — it felt like teenage me would have adored this book. But if you’re hoping to use this to introduce gothic fiction to younger readers, it might not quite hit the mark.
A gorgeously spooky book that will delight Wednesday fans and adult goth bookworms, but not quite the accessible introduction to gothic literature it aims to be.
V první řadě je knížka po grafické stránce naprostým skvostem.😍 Je celá laděná do černo fialových odstínů a na každé stránce najdete nádherné ponuré ilustrace i vyladěné písmo.
Co se úryvků z klasických děl týče, i tady mě knížka moc potěšila. Najdete v ní totiž například úryvky z děl E.A.
Určitě moc doporučuji všem milovníkům Addamsovy rodiny, popřípadě by knížka mohla nadchnout všechny halloweenské nadšence, protože má tu správnou ponurou atmosféru. 🎃
