What does Linda love most about her work?
"As a novelist, I love the creative process itself—the challenge of developing and constructing plots that include mystery, romance, and suspense, told in beautiful prose. Writing is both a passion and a compulsion, and the most satisfying form of escape I’ve ever experienced. My greatest reward comes from sharing my imaginary worlds with others who enjoy taking the journey. If readers talk about my characters as though they are real people, I know I did my job well."
Most notably, is Linda's Sidney Becker Mysteries series, set in the mountain community of Garnerville, OR. The seven-book series is perfect for readers who love small-town procedurals, strong female law enforcement leads, and psychological suspense. Linda does intensive research to ensure the themes of her novels are informative, her characters are unique, and the stories are captivating and original. One of her most trusted editors has twenty years of law enforcement experience, ensuring that the police protocol is accurate.
Before she was a full-time author, Linda enjoyed a twenty-five-year career as an award-winning graphic designer and copywriter. In Los Angeles, she provided design services for several magazines and movie studios. Later, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, and Hewlett Packard and Fujitsu were among her many clients. Linda was also an award-winning Art Director for South Bay Accent magazine for six years.
Linda currently lives in Virginia with her husband and adorable mini poodle. A passionate animal and nature lover, her garden provides a safe sanctuary for a wide variety of birds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators. She also loves to cook healthy meals, visit historical sites, and walk in the forests by rivers and lakes.
Before I get into what I thought of the book(s) a couple of disclaimers, firstly this review covers both part 1 and part 2 of the 'Hidden' story by Linda Berry, and secondly I received complimentary copies of both books from the author, however I have voluntarily written this honest review. OK, so why have I written one review for both books? well, taken together the two books tell a complete story, but taken in isolation the first book finishes on a huge cliffhanger, and the second book rather suffers from a lack of important character development which is covered in part 1. So bear this in mind when reading the rest of this review. The plot is really quite epic, telling the story of two young men in the modern day west of the USA, one a ranger in the US army, back from active service and the other an orphan who is a great bull rider in rodeos. There are a lot of themes covered in the books, including difficult family relationships, love, physical abuse of wives and children and betrayal but also friendship, reconciliation and forgiveness. All this is set against a beautifully described ranch country. I thought that the characters are great, all very well written and very different but believable personalities who span the spectrum of human strengths and weaknesses. Horses form quite a large element in this story, and I have to admit that I did struggle with the US equine terminology used, which is completely different to that used in the UK, so that I frequently had to stop and look up a term to understand what it meant. But taken overall the tale is very exciting, uplifting and a pleasure to read, especially if both parts are read together.
Hidden part 2 is wide, multi faceted, captivating book that maintains and improves upon the promises of the the first volume. The story, already rich and intense in the first instalment, picks up pace and emotional involvement as it progresses. The narration is once again filled with beautiful descriptions, often mirroring the characters’ feelings. The personality traits of each one of them are, however, more defined, vivid, intense, inspiring strong feelings of sympathy or loathe to the reader. Similarly to the first novel, the book has plenty of vivid, realistic and interesting characters. The author takes the time to depict their personality, study their reactions and their behaviour. The result is a fascinating tale about the varieties of human nature, so vivid and captivating that the reader feels involved, sad and irritated at times, moved and happy at the end. It is difficult to tell which character I most enjoyed. Of course, the personal story of Sully and Justin is the main stream of the book. However, many other of them are three dimensional, captivating personas that populate the story and give it substance and depth. Hidden part 2 is a story that I really enjoyed reading. It is ample, rich, full of heart and emotions, filled by beautiful and poetic descriptions. As it often happens when I really loved a book, I’m having a hard time at finding my next one!
"Hidden , Part 2" by Linda Berry is as good as "Part 1".The author, Linda Berry, does a good job tieing all the loose ends together in a satisfying, and exciting conclusion. The review I left on Goodreads sums up the story line, which contiues to its finale in this novel. Because the novel is writen from the standpoint of two protagonists, I did get a tiny bit lost at the events of the ending, and I had to flip back to see what slipped past me in my "eager-to-see-how-it-turns- out" reading at top speed. I enjoyed the book and recommend it for the fine narrative and good character development. It was easy to become interested in the lives of Sully, Justin , thier loves and families. Cautions? Well, a slam-bang ending , with enough romance to appeal to all readers (less)
I loved this story told in two parts of a returning veteran from Afghanistan who comes home to chaos - his father in a nursing home; his mother estranged from the father living in a small apartment, while the family ranch and horse trading business is on verge of bankruptcy. The veteran Michael Sullivan ( "Sully") copes, and copes well confronting horse thieves, murder, and a perhaps inappropriate romance. There is a second parallel story of a young rodeo star cowboy, a victim of the foster care system, who becomes enmeshed in the horse thieving scandal as well, and tries to find peace, love, and security in his journey to escape the chaos in his life. Strongly re commend this two part story. Hope the author follows up with a Part 3.
Linda's understanding of the human psyche and her ability to play out the line as the story unfolds revolve around her thoroughly developed characters in all their complexities. A lot is happening even as the main plot advances securely intact. They all come together, knitting into each other, as readers approach the last furlongs to the end.
Linda knows how to make an event of nature come alive and grip the readers. Raise it up to become a full-bodied, full-throttled character in its own right. Quicken the pace of the story at the right time. Bring readers to the edge of their seats.
When the story stays with you long after you've laid the book down for the day, that's a mark of a fine writer.
Sully has moved his father home from the nursing home that he had been staying in since his stroke earlier this year. Things were going as well as can be expected considering that Joe was a man who had a lot of pride and was not about to ask for help. Now Sully needed to find out what was behind his mother moving to town, it just didn't make sense. He also had to find out who was behind the horse stealing, now they had his prize stallion who was the bedrock of his breeding line of horses on his ranch. Awesome. Awesome Books, I couldn't put them down!!!! 👏👏 BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO!!!!
This is a great story of a continuation of Hidden:Part 1. Sully finds he is falling in love with Maggie, the Mother of Eric , who was killed in Afghanistan under Sully's command. Meanwhile, Justin is settling in at the ranch perfecting his bull riding skills. Horses are stolen from the barn while Justin was out jogging. He is accused by another ranch hand of helping the thieves steal the horses. Justin takes off on horseback to trail the thieves to try and clear his name. Will he find them and come back alive. The novel keeps you wanting to continue reading to find out what happens next.
Loved this book! Complex characters and a storyline that has two stories combined into one.
Sully is working hard to leave the war behind him and to get the family farm going in the right direction. Justin has been given the opportunity to train with a former bull riding champion and finally feels like he has a home. They each decide to track the horses stolen from various ranches in the area. As their search intertwines so do their lives.
I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.
I loved the story in Part 1 of this 2 part novel. Needless to say, part 2 did not disappoint. It keep me turning page after page just as part 1 had done. I honestly didn't care for the story line of Sully & Maggie. I felt he was too young for her, but mostly I didn't like the fact that he was her sons best friend. It just felt wrong to me any way you looked at it. However, it did not spoil the overall of the story & hands down, I would still highly recommend it!
Linda Berry is one of my new favorite authors. Fast paced books. Very entertaining. She pulls you into the story line, introduced you to characters that you want to follow, and leaves you disappointed when the story is over. I read daily as a stress reducer. Her books are very enjoyable. I love her writting style.
Hard to put down. Enjoyed following characters from Part 1 into Part 2. Following all from recovery from terrible situations to finding family bonds and love. Hope there will be a Part 3 following their recovered lives and accomplishments.
I loved this series! It's not often you find a book which is so well written and versed in both the country it's about and the horse sense! Mystery, romance, and beautiful horses made these two books favorites of mine!
Great story. Justin finds out he has a family. This is about horse stealing, a gun fight and love. Sully follows the crooks to where they have his the horses and a gun fight with the crooks ends with the death of some and capture of others. Read the exciting ending.
A very interesting s story. Full of plots and twists. The characters very believable. I enjoyed book one s o much I had to get book two. I would like to see this story continue on.
Characters are well developed and scenery is very important to the story. They put the reader right into the action and once the action starts you can't put the book down. Great book can't wait!
Filled with action and suspense, an enjoyable read with action and love stories twined together ,coupled with realistic characters to provide a story that makes you keep reading to see what happens next !
I did not want this story to end. Really felt like I knew the characters and was rooting for them all , the good guys of course. There certainly is enough for more to their story. Horses, rodeo, two plus ranches need another story to follow.
