After finishing 'Into the Deep', I immediately had to dive into the follow-up book. I couldn't leave things unsettled between Charley and Jake. I needed closure.

Told in the same "dual timeframe" format, this time it is Charley who is responsible for breaking Jake's heart. The tables have turned. Only this time, Jake is determined not to let Charley slip away.

As much as I continued to love this couple, and the drama that surrounds them, the emotional ups and downs can be a bit tedious. I waited so long to see them get a small sliver of happiness before everything was wrecked again. It doesn't seem fair.

Nonetheless, I'm hooked. So, I jumped right back on this emotional roller coaster, hoping for the best. Thankfully, I was not disappointed.

It may have taken a while, but I finally got the HEA and the closure that I wanted for this couple. As an added bonus, I got more of the story between Beck and Claudia. I was dying to get more of their story and Ms. Young delivered.

Overall, this was a great book and a nice conclusion to Jake and Charley's story. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was fantastic. I'm so glad that I gave this series a shot. I'd still love together even more of Beck and Claudia's story, so I'll keep a lookout for any new books featuring these two in the future.

Well I read the first book 6 months ago and this is what I remember:

- Jake and Charley are finally happy and together
- Lowe is badass and I want him
- It was hot and angsty

That's about it. This second book didn't work for me because:

- The present/past scenes. I can't do those. Sorry. Especially since one is February 2013 and the other is August/September 2013 and going back and forth between them is giving me whiplash...just no.

- I can't stand weak, no backbone heroines and that's what Charley is in this book. Just no.

- The reason for their separation?????? That's got to be the dumbest reason EVER!!!!!





I already knew that if I continued reading the book my night would be spent ranting at the wall. So why not cut my losses early hmmm?

My recommendation: Do not read this book. If you truly adore Jake and Charley, then re-read Into the Deep. Savor it. Or else...this book will ruin the characters for you.

“Is it possible to die of sex exhaustion?” I panted, collapsing in a sprawl across Jake’s sweat dampened chest.


It heaved beneath my cheek as he lazily stroked my spine. “I’m thinking yes.”


“That was…” I groaned at the hot feel of him inside of me.


“Mindblowing?” he offered with a suspicious amount of smugness in his voice. “Told you it would be.”


I bit his shoulder gently. “Cocky.”


“I dare you to leave teeth marks,” Jake squeezed my ass. “I’d love explaining it to people.”


“What people?” I mumbled irritably. “You’re inside the only person who should be seeing you shirtless, mister.”


He chuckled and I burrowed deeper against the sound in his throat. “The guys and I don’t really care about walking around the apartment shirtless.”


Despite my sex exhaustion, I found the energy to jerk away from him, my hands pressed to his chest as I scowled down at him. “In other words you’d love to explain those marks to Lowe.”


Inured to my glower, Jake tucked my long hair behind my ear, before following the wavy strand of platinum down over my breast. “It would make a point.”


“A point he is well aware of. The traitor dumped me in your hands last night.”


Jake flashed me an unrepentant grin. “That’s true.”


Before I could respond he took me by surprise, wrapping his arms tightly around me as he sat up. Our lips almost brushed as he brought us chest to chest. Sensing I wasn’t going anywhere, any time soon, I shifted off my knees and wrapped my legs around his waist. Jake’s eyes darkened with the movement.


“No way,” I breathed. “You can’t possibly…”


“Not yet,” he crushed me against him, whispering the words across my mouth. “Anyway, we have stuff to talk about.”


I instantly wanted to pull away but Jake cupped his hand around my nape, forcing me to look at him. I jerked against his hold.


“Good, we’ll start with that,” he muttered darkly. “Why do you keep pulling away from me?”


“I told you I don’t like it when you hold me by the neck like that. It’s not a big deal.” It was so a big deal. And Jake knew it was. He just didn’t know why.


The truth was he used to hold me like that when he wanted my entire focus. It was kind of intense and more than kind of sexual, and I thought it was something he just did with me. However, I’d once witnessed him holding his ex-girlfriend Melissa in the exact same way, and as stupid as I knew it was, it bothered me. A whole lot.


“I don’t believe you.”


“Next question,” I sighed, tugging his hand off my neck.


Jake didn’t look happy but he relented. “When are you thinking about telling your parents about us?”


“Well,” I wriggled on him with a cheeky smile, “I was thinking we should uncover the plot of some evil mastermind and you can save the world. There’s no way my parents won’t be happy for us to be back together after that. It would be petty.”


“Stop being cute,” he said quietly, kneading the muscles in my lower back. “I’m trying to be serious and I can’t do that when you’re sitting on me naked, acting all cute.”


“Then I guess my work here is done,” I smiled and kissed him hard. Jake’s arms turned to steel around me as he hauled me closer, deepening the kiss with a groan that reverberated through me in such a delicious way…


I wrapped my arms around him, my fingers curling around his hair.


Jake broke our kiss, grabbing my upper arms to push me gently back.


He scowled at me. “Play fair.”


I slumped. “Why should I? You’re not.”


“How is trying to have a conversation with my girlfriend not playing fair?” he narrowed his eyes on me. “How did I become the chick in this scenario?”


Laughing, I ran my fingers through his hair, loving the way his lashes lowered over his eyes in pleasure at my touch. “You did that all by yourself.”

I normally don't rate books I haven't finished but, boy, did this one rub me wrong. So, 1 star it gets from me. Like most sequels, the continuation of the story fell short-way short. Such a shame because I love this author.

WOW... Just WOW....
I am all over the map on this one...

Full review:
I'm really in awe of Samantha Young. She brings so much to a book. What I thought would happen in Out of the Shallows was no where close to the actual story.
I'm not complaining. It just shows how brilliant and talented she is.
Out of the Shallows brought an unconventional love story to life. My meaning? This isn't your run of the mill sappy romance. It is so much more. It reaches deep levels of pain, anger, and regret all the while tying those with hope, love and growth.
For 90% of the book, I wanted to strangle Charley. Just grab her by the shoulders and shake her silly until she gained some sense again.
I DID NOT agree with her decisions. The choices she made really just pissed me off. But...BUT...I understood... I got it...She was just in THAT place. It's so eerie too...I could identify with her on so many levels. Having that connection with the main character like that. It definitely makes the story that much more.
However, I truly admired Charley when all was said and done. She grew so much during this book and to see her face her fears and become the woman she could be proud of...yeah...that gets you right in the heart.
It was a long, HARD road for her and it left me very worried...I really didn't know if things were going to work out. The complexity of the situations kept those ton of bricks on Charley's shoulders leaving me with the grave feeling of things not ending well...
Now, I bet you are wondering where Jake is in all of this??
I can tell you that in this book I fell more in love with him that I thought possible. And I mean the head over heels, melt in to a pile of gooh in love with him.
What he endured throughout Out of the Shallows proved him to be a man of unbelieveable character. *sighs heavily*
I believe this may even make him my top book boyfriend...(yeah...that is saying LOADS!!!)
Anyways, Out of the Shallows is a work of pure ingenuity. It is a story that encompasses so many emotions. Challenging you to encounter your own fears head on...provoking you to look deep indide and discover your true self.
Every moment, every scene, you connect to these amazing characters. Filling you with angst, anger, worry, passion and love...with scorching heat from the hot sexy intimate interludes...Out of the Shallows is a book that is a definite must read...

When the continuing story of Charley and Jake starts, they are not together, well, at least not in the present. The story is again told in the present and the past so we know something bad happens. It just takes a while to find out what it is.



I really enjoyed the first book but I have to admit that I felt Jake got off a bit too easy and that he never really felt Charley's pain. This book more than makes up for it...maybe a bit too much. It was really hard reading about Jake suffering so much. I would have loved reading his POV.

The good news is that Charley has a lot of growth. It is a journey for her and things were a bit dramatic but she did make progress. And even through it all, we never lost sight of how much she loved Jake.

I love Jake and Charley's chemistry and I think that SY always does a great job with the steamy scenes. I think San Francisco was my favorite but there are plenty of good ones.



I really enjoyed all the scenes with Charley's family especially with them having problems and working things out. I was a bit surprised at Charley's Dad though.

There's plenty of the band. I really hope that we get a Lowe book because it would be a crime if we don't. Plus I'm really interested to see where things go for The Stolen.

We get A LOT of Beck and Claudia which is only naturally because I heard a rumor that their book is next! They go through quite a lot as well and my heart really went out to Beck but...I think he needed something like that to give him a good kick in the butt! Let's hope it works!

Charley and Jake got their HFN ending in the last book. But they are torn apart again. Would Jake be able to convince Charley at a third chance at love?

I didnt enjoy the direction of the story. In my opinion I would decribe this as unneccessary angst. The back and forth between Jake & Charley as well as with Claud & Beck was getting repetitive. Also, what happened to Charley here? She was like a different character and I didnt like her at all.

I did like the little sexy time we got and of course there was Jake. This was one frustrating NA book, flicking from present to past and their story would have been fine left at book 1.

OMG I stayed up all night reading Into The Deep. Now I am like Whaaaaaaaat??? Why do I always torture myself with series I know I am going to have to wait for? But beside all the frustration I love Charley and Jake.

This book starts 6 months after Into the Deep and is a little confusing at the beginning. Apparently something happened between Charley and Jake and for a while we don't know what. Until I found out what it was I was pissed at Charley and her actions. I thought that the roles were reversed here, and as much as I liked her in the first book, she started to annoy me in this one. On the contrary, Jake was much better hero here and in the end he won my heart.
In the middle of the book I was so frustrated with Charley that my feelings were all over the place. But the further I got, the more I liked the story and I ended up loving it. I started to understand Charley and her behaviour toward Jake, it doesn't mean I was ok with it but I understood. I totally got her. I tried to put myself in Charley's position and realized that I wasn't mad at her for keeping the promise she made. I think that once she made it and in her opinion thanks to it something she wanted to happen, happened, she was so scared to break it because it would be like asking for taking it all back as a punishment.
I didn't agree with Charley's doings toward her sister though. I get that she was lost and heartbroken but the decision she made and was adamant to keep wasn't Andie's fault. Andie had nothing to do with it and that's when I think Charley was wrong.
But to get to the point, I was glad that she somehow saw that her fear was irrational and changed her mind, because only then they could have their HEA.

"Jake's heart couldn't take much more, and mine needed to learn how to cope with all the craziness that came with loving someone as much as I loved Jacob Chaplin."

I must admit I wasn't Jake's fan in the first book, and reading some bonus scenes with his POV made me like him even less. But in this one I totally fall for him, especially for his patience and the way he matured along the way.

"Go home and find yourself. Take all the time you need. And when you're done and if you still want me, come and find me."

Some might say there was too much unnecessary drama and angst, but it wasn't like that for me. In comparision to the last angsty book I've read, this one was like holidays. I think there was just enough anxiety to keep me flipping pages.
So, I'm giving this one 5 stars and it has a little something to do with Samantha's writing, a little with Jake's redemption and a little with the way it made me feel. And that's what I want from book mostly, I wanna feel. I actually woke up today with book hangover and I couldn't get the story out off my head, which means yes, it was a great reading for me.

I HATED the whole LEGO block this whole story was build on.
It only comes out around the 70% mark - the whole point of the book - what it's all about and the WHYs and WHOs and WHATs - especially the WTFs ☺
I hated the book at that point! And I hated Charley. I don't want the word GOD in my romance books - just can't stand it!!!! That's why I almost gave only 2 stars!
Poor Jake!!!!!!!!!
But it was a really great book! A great story.
OK, like the first book - this again was totally confusing for me in the beginning with all its jumps in times and places - but it made up for it by having my darlings Jake & Beck & Lowe in it ☺

I cried a hell of a lot!!!! There were sooo many sad and moving and frustrating moments!



Not enough sexy moments for my taste - but at least there were SOME sexy scenes!!!

And I really hope Samantha will write Lowe's story one day!!!

Argggh! The curse of book 2

I loved book 1, I gave it 5 stars - it should have been left as it was.

This book starts off with Charley and Jake back in the States but they are no longer together. It took me about 20% to remember who everyone was and I was so confused as to why they had split up but we get a past and present perspective here and it becomes clear near the end but by that time I was bored stiff.

For me this was a non book.

2 Disappointing Stars

I will start by saying I love Samantha Young, and have enjoyed everyone of her books from the Dublin St series, but I found this one seriously lacking.


I can't even begin to tell you where this one starts out, because I was confused as shit. I actually went back and reread the last chapter of Into to the Deep. I seriously was like what the fuck happened, I missed something huge.


False alarm, I didn't miss anything. This book just switches time frame every chapter. So we start like 5-6 months after the end of Into the Deep. Jake and Charley have broken up because something horrible has happened. Her mother is visiting a cemetery, her father won't talk to her, and she misses her sister. You may think Spoiler no this happens within the first 2% of the book.

Ms. Young then takes you on a roller coaster of together not together, every few pages.


So the whole book I am basically trying to solve a mystery - it was Ms. Plum, in the conservatory, with a revolver. I am not down with some Agatha Christie shit.


I feel like I am ripping this book a part so I will throw out some positives: Jake, Beck and Claudia, The Stolen guys, oh yeah and Jake.

There was some hot sex, but again I had no idea when things were going to go down because the book just didn't flow at all. They can't all be winners and I am sure some will love it, it just wasn't for me.

In my opinion the way Charley jerked Jake around, I wouldn't have been upset at all if he gave up. I mean shit, what self respecting person would put up with that shit?? Second, Andie really?? The whole book I thought she was dead, so I was giving Charley some slack - no she's alive....What?

I liked but not loved first book in this series, Into The Deep. While I found it entertaining it wasn't as good as other Samantha Young's books. Still though I decided to give Charley and Jake a second chance and unfortunately I'm even more disappointed in the sequel. It's not that I didn't like the characters or the writing, I was just bored and really annoyed with the plot that seemed to drag. It'd be better story if it was left as intense standalone.

Out of the Shallows made my heart hurt. Jake and Charley's story began in Into the Deep, and it was a tumultuous story to say the least. They had an intense connection and a crazy powerful love when they were teens. Then, a tragic accident tore them apart. Four years later, they reunite unexpectedly at college, except Jake has a girlfriend and Charley's never gotten over him. Their history can't be denied, though, and finally, they find their way back to one another. You'd think that would be the end of their story. Their happily ever after, so to speak. You would be wrong.

"... you against my fallow heart. There'll be no sympathy from me, my friend. I lost you out in the shallows..."

My loyalties have flip flopped. In Into the Deep, I was totally Team Charley. Jake was a jerk to her when they were teenagers. He dumped her, left her and stopped talking to her. She's trying to move on when he shows back up - with a girlfriend, no less - and starts messing with her head. Although I was, of course, rooting for them to get back together, I really wanted her to make him suffer a bit for being such a jerk.

Suffer he did, so their reunion was hard won and well deserved. However, their happiness didn't last long. Soon, Charley's family, who had very long memories when it came to Jake and the pain he caused Charley after leaving her the first time, starts voicing their issues with Charley and Jake getting back together, and Charley thinks she has to make a choice between her family and Jake. At first Charley chooses Jake, which causes a major rift in her family. After a major event, Charley changes her tune and chooses her family over Jake, which causes her to lose the man she loves more than any other, only this time by HER actions, not his.

Go Team Jake. I spent much of Out of the Shallows feeling intensely frustrated. Nearly every character spends 95% of the book completely miserable. Charley and Jake are apart, but neither wants to be. Beck is still denying his feelings for Claudia, causing both of them to be upset nearly all the time. Charley's parents are mad about her career and boyfriend choices. Charley's sister won't speak to her because she's back together with Jake. And I wanted to shake all of them and tell them to focus on what's important!

Charley seems to think she needs to choose between her family or Jake. Granted they don't like him because of how he treated her. But, they won't listen to reason. The thing is, Charley shouldn't have to split her loyalties. No one should ask her to do that. Her parents, although they mean well, treat her horribly. They make her feel guilty for wanting to work in a dangerous profession, and then play upon that guilt to get her to do what they want. Even worse, they know full well what they are doing, and are okay with it.

The strong, snarky Charley from Into the Deep was missing. She was replaced with someone indecisive, whiny and cruel. I didn't like the Charley of Out of the Shallows very much at all. It took a lot of council from her friends (most of which seemed to fall on deaf ears) before Charley decided to take action, but once she does, it was like coming home. To see my confident, Supergirl Charley back was awesome.

Jake was completely amazing in Out of the Shallows. Despite being hurt and upset, he seems to have learned his lesson from the first time around. He talks to her about how he feels (seriously - who IS this guy and why aren't there more like him out there?!), he gives her space when she needs it, and most importantly, he never gives up on her.

There was also the story within the story - the continuing saga of Beck and Claudia. In Out of the Shallows, we see something awful happen to both of them, and we see how the other helped. But, it became apparent in Into the Deep that Beck has some serious commitment issues. It was also clear that he loves Claudia very much. Watching the change in Beck was pretty cool.

We see all the awesome side characters from Into the Deep, including my favorite - Lowe. I'm really hoping Samantha Young will write about him next. He still seemed to care a whole lot about Charley in Out of the Shallows, and I'd love to see him get his happily ever after.

Out of the Shallows was intense and emotional. It was hard to read at times, but the ending was pretty amazing. It made all the stress and angst worth it.

I was so excited when I saw this book was released early but now that I've finished it (after reading it in one sitting) I'm not sure how I feel which is why I rated it only 3 stars. I was anxious to see what would happen to Jake and Charley and while I was satisfied with the ending I'm not sure how I felt about the rest of the book. At times it felt like the angst was forced and the author was just throwing everything possible at the couple in order to make the story longer. But there were other times that I could see what the author was trying to do and how it all came full circle. I think I was just so excited for Jake and Charley's happy ending that I wasn't expecting all the angst and drama that at times seemed unnecessary. I really wish we had gotten more at the end and shown more of them working through everything instead of being told in one sentence that they worked it out.

However I do think if you liked Into the Deep that you should read this story as well if only to see how Jake and Charley's story ended.

Oh good lord. I waited so long for the first one! I waited up all night to finally have it downloaded. Then I finish it, and I'm left having to wait soooo freakin long for the second half?!?! THIS. IS. TORTURE!

Una continuación totalmente innecesaria. El intercambio de papeles que se produce entre los protagonistas me ha parecido poco creíble y la indecisión de Charley a la hora de manejar su vida me ha puesto muy nerviosa. When I read the blurb and saw the word "concludes", I shook my head with disbelief. This is not the end for Jake and Charley....hell no! I refused it. Re-reading Into the Deep the night prior to starting Out of the Shallows, it made me fall in love with the characters all over again. Charley with her smart-assery, Jake with his broodiness, Claud and her love of Dairy Milk chocolate(which I can not argue with), Lowe and his sexiness, and Beck with his boy-boyish charms.
Out of the Shallows starts off with Charley and Claud in Delia's flower shop. Wait...what??? What happened to Scotland??? As I made my way through the first chapter, I felt my heart getting torn apart. Confusion struck; what the hell happened! With Chapter Two under my belt, I was able to relax. Throughout the book, I had a bad feeling that I was going to have an ugly cry session in the bathroom. Turns out, not too bad but bad enough.

There is this heavy feeling when I read the present day chapters that when I finally found out what happened, I breathed a bit easier but my heart broke for Charley and Jake. And Claudia; sweet spunky Claudia has her own stuff to deal with. The blow from her parents around Christmastime is still lingering and the non-relationship with Beck finally comes to a head when yet more tragedy strikes. When I reached the end of the book, I felt content with Charley and Jake's story. But what about Lowe? Claudia and Beck? Matt??? Will I be privy to their stories Miss Samantha?? I hope so!
Out of the Shallows is an incredible read. It's hot, angry, depressing, healing, and an eye opener. Samantha Young is on top of her game with this sequel. She ended Charley and Jake's story perfectly. Now....Claud and Beck or Lowe!!! Please and Thank You!!!!

Dear Ms. Young,
I adore your books. Please keep writing forever so I can read these angst ridden, emotional turmoil stories. I loved Jake and Charley almost as much as Nate and Olivia. Almost. You are now forever on my auto-buy lists.

In one word, disappointed. I enjoyed Into the Deep and really liked Charley and Jake and their story. I feel like I've waited a long time for this book to come out and I was very disappointed. I didn't really like anything about it, except the side story about Claudia and Beck. I usually like Samantha Young's books, but this one I could have done without.

I definitely didn't enjoy this book as much as the first... and to be perfectly honest, I kind of wish that it was left how the previous book ended. This book just felt like a lot of unnecessary drama and angst, and then we ended up in the exact same place as before.

Charley wasn't anywhere near as endearing as she was before. She let people push her around and let their judgments shape the direction her life was taking, even though it wasn't what she wanted.
The situation with Andie; again, it just seemed so pointless!

Jake was just about the only thing I still loved. He didn't deserve to be treated the way he was. I felt like he just went with everything she threw at him because he felt like he deserved it after what happened with them in the past. Which makes me so freaking mad. He worked his ass off for months to win her back. To gain her trust and to show her that he would never again screw up the way he did before. He made her promises. Promises that she returned and failed to keep.
I hated the way she left him hanging for so long. She was taking advantage of his feeling for her, whether it was intentional or not. I was mad that she got him back so easily after what she put him through.

Her family were so horrible, nothing like they were before. They were harsh and judgmental, selfish and mean. I was really shocked by their behaviour.

Lowe was still as wonderful as ever!

Overall... the first book was amazing. The second was okay.
I am just glad their story has ended on a high.

Bu uçurumluk farkı oluşturan yazarı tebrik etmek lazım.😃 Ben bu kitabın neden yazıldığını başta gerçekten anlayamadım. Büyük ihtimalle ikilinin aralarındaki derin sorunlar ilk kitapta çözülemediği ve arapsaçı kıvamına geldiği için yazar ikinci kitaba geçti. Ama zaten ikisini biraz harmanlayıp birleştirse 600 sayfalık şa ha ne bir eser ortaya koyabilirmiş. Gereksiz uzatma yani. Anlayamadım. Bu puanı vermemin tek sebebi ortaları oldu. Ters köşe yapmaya çalışmış ve neredeyse başarmıştı. Neredeyse. Ben bu çabasını takdir ederek bu puanı veriyorum. Şunu da söylemek isterim kitabın hatta iki kitabın da çok kasvetli bir havası var. Yani aşk romanı desen ııh, dram desen ııh, gizem desen ııh, çerez desen ııııııııhıııh! Hiç değil. Neresinden tutalım ben de şaşırdım. 2.5 ile başlayıp şuyundan buyundan katıp yuvarlasak 3 diyorum.

Ok I am torn with this one. I saw a lot of hate for Charley in reviews because she was so wishy washy with Jake. That was an aspect of the 1st book that drove me freaking crazy, in that, he dumped his gf and she immediately went right back to him and didn’t make him work for it at all. I was not the biggest Jake fan going into this book based on those extra POV’s we got after the 1st book, so stringing him along was fine by me. Even if her reasoning was completely bat shit crazy, and yes I will admit it was pretty dumb and anti-climactic but again not a Jake fan going into this so she could have batted that bunny around all she wanted.

What really drove ME bat shit crazy were all the time lapses, like migraine inducing. Don’t read this with alcohol, you need full mental capacity to keep track of what month of 2013 it is. If you are going to do a past/present sorta deal, make it freaking count. Like make it at least a year or something, my goodness. That is what ultimately killed it for me, the flow was just all over the damn place and it got some jumbled by like 80% I really could have cared less who was with who, I just wanted the roller coaster ride to end. And this rollercoaster isn’t the fun kind where you have crazy ass drops that hurt so good, no this is the rollercoaster that jacks you from side to side, turns you upside down, until your puking your corny dog, funnel cake out for all to see.

I digress…I was also kind of sad not to see more of Lowe. Lowe fan right here, Jake not so much. Charley def lost her cool points from the 1st book too. So still torn, am I glad I read it? I guess?? But do you need too? Nah…the 1st book was fine all on its own and I didn’t feel this additional novel was warranted or even needed as it did nothing to advance the story or build the characters stories. Would I continue to read this series? Hells yes, if it’s a Lowe book. So bummed it didn’t work out, but can’t win em all.

This was an absolutely brilliant conclusion to Charley and Jake's epic story. It was tumultuous and frustrating, but full of redemption, hope and an incredibly strong and resilient love. I am so so sad to see these two go but they are one couple I will revisit time and time again!

Samantha Young has proven to be a brilliant New Adult author, and Into The Deep and Out of The Shallows should be on everyone's tbr list. Also, this was absolutely worth the extra wait for it to be perfect!

This is the sequel to Into the Deep. At the end of the first book, Charley and Jake had finally resolved their differences and were together after their 4 year separation. Jake had broken up with Melissa and wanted to fix things with Charley; to right the wrongs that he committed. Unfortunately, Charley's family doesn't want to see her back with Jake; they are the ones who were left picking up the pieces of what was left of her life after Jake dumped her and moved away. She has a huge argument with her sister and the two are both so stubborn, neither wants to be the one to give in and call the other. Charley's parents are angry about Jake, but are going off the deep end because Charley not only told them she is back with Jake, but she doesn't want to go to law school, she wants to go to the police academy instead.


This novel's format is told in alternating chapters switching from the past to the present, just as it was in the first book. Sometimes this can break up the continuity of the story, but it still works. In the present, Jake and Charley are broken up again! Grrrr...and something horrible has happened in Charley's family. But it is not revealed what happened, just that whatever it is, it caused her to break up with Jake. The poor guy has no idea what is going on, and Charley will not open up to him.

Meanwhile, the secondary characters are still having significant roles in this story, same as in the first one. Jake's friends are still actively pursuing their music careers with their Indie rock band, The Stolen. Beck is still back and forth with Charley's best friend, Claudia, and there is a ton of unresolved issues with them. Melissa, Jake's ex, is still her same old passive/aggressive self. She seems to be friendly to Charley, when in reality, she is one claw away from a cat fight just waiting to happen. Lowe is still hung up on Charley, but is respectful of Jake, even though he and Charley aren't together.


Charley really frustrated me in this book. She creates a lot of her own drama. Had she talked to her sister when they had their blow out, the issues with her family would not have escalated as they did. I really didn't understand her reaction to the tragic event that happened to her family. She hurt them and Jake over and over and I was losing patience with her and her inability to confront conflict-her fight or flight instincts leave something to be desired. Jake tries so hard to fix his relationship with her, but he doesn't seem to do anything right.


Except for wanting to shake some sense into Charley, I enjoyed this story. I have to admit I would like to see Charley and Jake's lives a little further down the road, as there are still unresolved issues. Young has created a strong cast of characters with this series, they have such colorful personalities, I would welcome spin offs for several of them, namely Beck and Claudia or poor Lowe, I'd like to see him appreciated for more than the lickable sex on a stick he seems to be. Here's hoping I'll get my wish.

Unfortunately this was a major disappointment. BUT I was prepared for it because the ending of book one didn’t suggest room for development of the story. Basically this book is almost the same as the previous one. The conversations, the situations, the drama- all the same (or similar). I even don’t think the ending was satisfying...I definitely needed a little more.



I loved Charley in the first book but I can’t say I continued to like her in this one. She wasn’t the strong and passionate girl any more. Yes, this time she is struggling with guilt but it’s like she is a totally different heroine.

The story: Charley and Jake aren’t together in the begging of the book. Slowly we learn why. But Jake is not going to give up on her despite the fact he pushes him away constantly. Beck and Claudia continue with their pretending to don’t want to be together and Lowe is still awesome as always.

“You make me feel like I can be anyone , do anything… but you also have the ability to make me feel weak. You have the ability to crush me like no one else can.”

Overall the story is sweet but maybe I shouldn’t have read book 2.
