“Thrillers with a perfect blend of humor. Eric Swan is a modern mashup of James Bond and Fletch.” - Charlie Keaton, author and founder of Brubaker Creative
Eric Swan can be killed - but he can never die. For a government agent hunting the most dangerous domestic terrorists, that comes in handy.
But Swan is beginning to question his own humanity. Is technology turning this Q2 secret agent into a monster himself?
Now villainous brother-sister twins, fueled by a lust for power and revenge, have set their sights on taking down the power grid. And they’ve hired an army of mercenaries to protect them.
The clock is ticking with millions of lives at stake, and Swan must battle an army of killers while questioning the authenticity of his own soul. If he fails, the country will slip into a dark age of chaos and anarchy.
Power Trip is the first book in the Eric Swan thriller series. If you enjoy a dynamic fusion of action and intrigue, with a solid dose of humor, you’ll love Dom Testa’s Eric Swan novels.

This was a spectacularly fun read. I almost abandoned this book after just the first 2 chapters. It starts in the middle of an action sequence and I was lost. But chapter 3 starts the clarity and story is fast paced and fun from there on. I know I’m loving a book when I start casting actors for the movie version. Looking forward to book two: Poison Control. I’ll also be joining the Eric Swaniverse at EricSwan.com
I enjoyed this one enough to go on to the next in the series. However, I feel like Eric Swan is a wannabe. The dialog seems to be trying hard to entertain à la Spenser, Mal (Firefly), etc., and it just comes across too forced at times. Some might also compare him to Jack Reacher, but there is a quality of difference between the two that I can't quite express after only one Swan book.
But I liked Eric pretty well. His marriage and devotion to his wife was refreshing. I really liked the idea of adjoining apartments that can be accessed directly! The science fiction premise of downloading consciousness in to a new body made this one stand out and added a bit of interest when he attains a new body. Testa includes quite a few tidbits about past cases and a possibly returning nemesis to possibly fuel a number of future books.
Cons: The violence got tiring after awhile. The first chapter or so was confusing because readers are dropped in to the middle of a case (or the end?) without explanations. But as things moved forward, explanations were made and the flow was easier to deal with.
Do I recommend? Yes, I think fans of the secret agency solving the world's problems might definitely appeal to many. So, give it a try and decide. Obviously I'm on the fence, but will be giving it another go.
If you prefer to borrow your books, rather than buy, it may be difficult obtain; but Testa's website does currently offer a download of the first volume of the series (this one) for free in both Kindle and epub formats.
The story line is unique and different, the plot was interesting and had potential, but the author is so consumed with constant witty banter and "smart" snarky retorts he falls short at truly developing an interesting and thoughtful world of espionage. There are too many coincidences and easy resolutions. His characters become cliches and he misses the opportunity to create a storyline that entices the reader to want more. A line from the book sums it up ...“You find yourself amusing, I can tell. But you’re really quite tiring.”
This was 3.5 stars for me. Things I liked: the premise for how the character has come to be was pretty inventive, good descriptions of characters, plot line was interesting. Things I disliked: the main character was a bit too "snarky" for me, that is usually a turn off while I'm reading.
I bought this book because the author is on my favorite morning radio show. His voice really came through in Swan and I really enjoyed that. I will continue the series.
Eric Swan is a spy with a twist, he can't die.Well his body can, but he doesn't. You'll have to read to find out the cool secret. Eric Swan's character is the kind of guy you would like to know. He's smart, strong, loves food, has a sense of humor, oh and by the way, is married. Has to put a link in a long term relationship when you're a spy, right? But it all works. Glad he's on our side.
I really enjoyed this new twist to the international spy genre. This never-dying spy, with tons of sarcasm and snappy comebacks, sounds like he is having a wonderful time. And giving us a new and amazing twist on reincarnation of-a-sort is very refreshing. But our hero isn't just one note. He knows his life is weird and wild and acknowledges the philosophical issues it raises. Looking forward to reading the next installment.
How marvelous to have a brutal, ruthless killer who cannot be killed that, wonderfully, also laments at the death of even despicable thugs while simultaneously worrying that he’s simply becoming too jaded.
Smart, clever, ruthless and funny. This is a thriller you can't put down...the acton is tense and believable. The plot is tight and very well-written. I will be recommending this to all my reading friends and I am starting the second book right now!
I really wanted to like this book. I like Dom on the radio and I like the Galahad books. The premise seems fun. But I just couldn't get into it. The events of the novel weren't very exciting. I spent several weeks working my way through this book, whereas I read a Harry Bosch book in two to three days.
I really enjoyed this book. The idea of reinvestment as a type of immortality was interesting. But the Swan character made the whole thing fun to read. Hoping to pick up the next one.
Surprisingly fresh take in the secret agent genre with a lot of laughs, and some interesting philosophical discussion about life and death. I would definitely read more!
Just enough suspense, just enough humor and the kind of villans you love to hate. The chief enforcer's actions are almost inevitable, yet still unexpected
Fast read and kept your interest. I read his Galahad series years ago and really enjoyed it. So I thought I would give this one a try. I'll read the rest of the series because it's intriging.
I received this download for free, and I didn't think that I would like it, but I really enjoyed the story, and I will read the rest of the series. It's escapist fun.
A favorite Denver radio DJ brought a great spy series to life. Fun, snarky, and good enough to move me on to the rest of the series. Thank you, Dom Testa.
I use to listen to the writer as he hosted his show, that is why I picked up the book. I think it was a good concept. It just took a while to get into it and enjoy it.
I’m not a huge spy thriller fan, but this book did not disappoint! Eric Swan is an interesting character. I look forward to seeing what the next novel offers. I’ve found a new book series to binge!!
Good suspense, great character for whom I rooted throughout the story. And the humor! Great storytelling. Haven’t finished a book in a long time, this was worth my time.
