The oceans are under threat from pollution, climate change and overfishing. The consequences of these issues are great for us and for the planet. I am always on the lookout for something that can expand my “ocean knowledge” (or that of my family). This book is recent and has some nice features in its electronic form. I am again impressed with the DK graphics which are both beautiful and helpful. One section of this book that I needed included maps of each of the oceans with excellent details.
Here are the general sections of this “Knowledge Encyclopedia:
Ocean Science – covering everything from how the Earth was formed to currents and tides
Open Ocean - covering food chains, fish of the open ocean, migration, etc.
Shallow Seas – covering things such as sharks, mollusks, sea grasses and coral reefs
Seashores – everything from estuaries to rock pools and their inhabitants
Polar Oceans – sea ice, life under the ice, polar seabirds, etc.
Oceans and Us – everything from oil rigs to fish farming and ocean going vessels
Ocean Maps
You can always expect from DK a comprehensive viewpoint. This book is no exception, but it is left to the reader to decide how much further reading might be useful. Certainly a resource that most children older than 10 can use on their own and younger children will enjoy the photos and graphics with or without parental guidance.
A bonus: The electronic book is often a bargain on Amazon
