Knowledge Encyclopedia Ocean!

Rate this book
Dive into our planet's largest and least explored world in this stunning encyclopedia of everything ocean - including whales, waves, wrecks, wind farms, and more!

Using 3D computer illustrations to show cross-section views and a level of detail you can't find in other books, this children's ocean encyclopedia takes you on a world tour of the waters that cover 70 percent of our planet. Including sharks, jellyfish, turtles, dolphins, octopuses, penguins, and seahorses, you will see the fish, invertebrates, and other animals that call the ocean home and learn how their anatomy and behavior is adapted to deal with a watery habitat.

Discover the geography, geology, and ecology that lies beneath the waves - from the dramatic landscapes of the deepest trench and towering underwater chimneys, to coastal coral reefs and kelp forests teeming with life. Find out, too, about the science behind the seas. How do islands form? What are tsunamis? How can you help with marine conservation?

Beautifully illustrated and packed full of facts, Knowledge Encyclopedia Ocean! is the ultimate reference book for children curious about our planet's watery world.

The oceans are under threat from pollution, climate change and overfishing. The consequences of these issues are great for us and for the planet. I am always on the lookout for something that can expand my “ocean knowledge” (or that of my family). This book is recent and has some nice features in its electronic form. I am again impressed with the DK graphics which are both beautiful and helpful. One section of this book that I needed included maps of each of the oceans with excellent details.

Here are the general sections of this “Knowledge Encyclopedia:
Ocean Science – covering everything from how the Earth was formed to currents and tides
Open Ocean - covering food chains, fish of the open ocean, migration, etc.
Shallow Seas – covering things such as sharks, mollusks, sea grasses and coral reefs
Seashores – everything from estuaries to rock pools and their inhabitants
Polar Oceans – sea ice, life under the ice, polar seabirds, etc.
Oceans and Us – everything from oil rigs to fish farming and ocean going vessels
Ocean Maps

You can always expect from DK a comprehensive viewpoint. This book is no exception, but it is left to the reader to decide how much further reading might be useful. Certainly a resource that most children older than 10 can use on their own and younger children will enjoy the photos and graphics with or without parental guidance.

A bonus: The electronic book is often a bargain on Amazon

We've used this as a resource for the past 8 months now! We utilized it to accompany our Oceanography curriculum for 4th & 5th grade homeschool science. It has been just one part of the whole, so it's hard for me to rate it independently. Overall, it was a 5 star learning experience, with this book as a part of that. We especially appreciate the stunning visuals that DK offers to the learning experience.

This was really cool. I have to figure out how I'm going to handle reading all these browsable nonfiction books, though. I feel like they're such a slog because I'm not reading them as they are intended to be read. I skipped all of the 000s browsable fiction, but didn't plan to skip any of the rest. I have some thinking to do.

FABULOUS!!!!

Oh my gosh. For the first time EVER I'm grateful for a power outage! I read the book on my Kindle and was actually disappointed when power was restored! I love the DK books and will spend more time, "old school" enjoying more than tv. Thank you for the reminder and the experience!

I love books with photos ... This book taught me why the ocean is blue.. not a question I get every day but question answered... so much to be learned in these Smithsonian Encyclopedias... My plan is to collect them all because I fell in love with this one... what a fun way to teach kids... learn things with them... fun fun fun...
