Jimmy Vega Mystery #5

Voice with No Echo

Rate this book
A long-buried family secret and a chance encounter with an estranged sibling force police detective Jimmy Vega to confront his deepest fears in this gripping new mystery by award-winning author Suzanne Chazin . . .

It's spring in Lake Holly, New York, a time of hope and renewal. But not for immigrants in this picturesque upstate town. Raids and deportations are on the rise, spurring fear throughout the community.

Tensions reach the boiling point when the district attorney's beautiful young bride is found hanging in her flooded basement, an apparent victim of suicide. But is she, wonders Vega? If so, where is her undocumented immigrant maid? Is she a missing witness, afraid to come forward? Or an accessory to murder?

Vega gets more help than he bargained for when Immigration and Customs Enforcement sends an investigator to help find--and likely deport--the maid. It's Vega's half-sister Michelle, the child who caused his father to leave his mother. Now an ICE agent, Michelle tangles with Vega and his girlfriend, immigrant activist Adele Figueroa. The law is the law, Michelle reminds Vega. And yet, his heart tells him he needs to dig deeper, not just into the case but into his past, to a childhood terror only Michelle can unlock.

While Vega searches for the demon from his youth, he discovers one uncomfortably close by, erecting a scheme of monstrous proportions. It's a race against the clock with lives on the line. And a choice Vega never thought he'd have to make: Obey the law. Or obey his conscience. There's no margin for error . . .

Suzanne Chazin is the author of two critically acclaimed, award-winning suspense series. Her “Jimmy Vega” series, about an upstate New York cop navigating the world of the undocumented was an American Library Association finalist for Best Mystery of the Year and an Amazon pick. Her Georgia Skeehan/FDNY series was hailed as, “searing and emotionally explosive” (USA Today), and her heroine, fire investigator Georgia Skeehan, as “incredibly strong” (People).
A graduate of Northwestern University, Suzanne worked for two decades in journalism, writing for Reader's Digest and The New York Times, and winning several national awards. Among her quirkier experiences as a journalist: profiling a doctor who used his kitchen ceiling fan as a centrifuge (he went on to win the Nobel Prize in medicine for his work), and visiting a small Georgia town that had a parade in her honor because they got the funny idea that she was actually somebody important.
Thank God her novel-writing career has disabused her of any such notion.

Suzanne, you outdid yourself. This is your best work yet. Vega has developed into a truly great character. You have layered him wonderfully. This mystery was outstanding. Actually, you got me. I didn’t see it coming. That almost never happens. You tell the Vega stories so well given the fact that they are so close to the events of recent years, actually not just recent, but reaching very far back in the history of our country. Well done putting a face on the people who try so hard to realize their dreams.

I think there is another Vega story coming and then, finally another Skeehan book? I can’t wait for both!

People, if you haven’t read Chazin, please do, you’ll thank me. Start with THE FOURTH ANGEL and read the Fire books as I call them. Then go after Jimmy Vega. They are all great reads.

As always, Chazin is on top of her game. Her Jimmy Vega series has kept me hooked from book one and Jimmy is one of my favorite book characters. There is a lot going on in this book to go into detail but some key points:

--Jimmy keeps getting vague memories of something that happened in his childhood.

--We see the appearance of a new character, MIchelle, Jimmy's half sister. I love this new storyline and can't wait to see where Chazin will take this. I would love to see this relationship evolve as well as Jimmy getting a chance to confront some other people from his past.

--I was happy to see Zimmerman reappear as part of this story line. I would have liked to see the young man (Wil, I believe) Zimmerman took in also be a part of the story, but perhaps he'll reappear in another book.

--Some of my favorite characters in this series have been the immigrants as we get to know their stories. Chazin always writes them with compassion and they are a big part of the success of these books for me.

--Greco is supposed to be a big thorn in Jimmy's side but I personally like Greco. I wonder if we could maybe get a little insight into his past and what brought him to Lake Holly (minus the whole licorice thing).

This review will probably make more sense to readers of the series. I do highly recommend this series and cannot wait for the next installment.

I saw this Jimmy Vega Mystery series first in a review on Carole's Random Life in Books blog and had to start it.  I was thrilled to keep listening on my own motivation. I have been excited to get each book and could barely stop reading, finishing quickly.

The main character, Jimmy Vega, is a homicide detective in upstate New York and he ends up in the most heart-wrenching situations.  He's experienced and spent 5 years as an undercover narcotics detective.  His skills and efforts to follow the law are excellent. His Puerto Rican heritage, fluent Spanish, and girlfriend, all put him in situations with the local immigrant population.

Most of the murders people would love to see attributed to some undocumented person. Mostly, that is not what really happened.  There are too many people with egos, power and wealth, not to mention racist and cultural bias, who want things their way, regardless of the truth.  The undocumented have the whole range of honest and hardworking, to criminals involved in drugs, robberies, etc.

Jimmy has an ex-wife and daughter in town.  In Voice with No Echo, he is brought face-to-face with another relative. Michelle is his half-sister,  and the reason his father left his mother and him. Jimmy has some long standing rage and grief over those times in his young life which he finally looks at more closely. Michelle is with ICE which only adds another layer of conflict.

I really LOVE this series. The action is fast paced. The suspense I felt over those in danger was constant. I did guess who two of the bad guys were but there were more than two here.  The characters are diverse and interesting. Jimmy has to struggle with what is right and the safety of others, and keeping police business confidential.  No one is perfect but Jimmy and his girlfriend, Adele, try hard even though they are sometimes on opposing sides of a situation.  I enjoy the law enforcement investigation and the immigrant issues.

I can hardly wait for more!  I highly recommend this series. The audio version is fantastic.

Narration:
All but the first book in this series has been narrated by Rivera so he is the voice for me.  I really am enjoying his performance and accents, although I am no expert on different regions or countries.  It all sounds right to me.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advance copy of Voice with No Echo, the fifth novel to feature Jimmy Vega, a county police officer in New York State and his girlfriend, immigration activist, Adele Figueroa.

Jimmy is called in to help Lake Holly PD with the death investigation of Talia Crowley, the wife of the local district attorney. The local police are leaning towards suicide but Jimmy isn’t so sure. Then ICE gets involved because the housekeeper Lissette is undocumented and the agent sent to investigate is Jimmy’s half-sister, Michelle, who is more or less a stranger to him. Adele, in the meantime, is trying to help Lissette’s uncle, Edgar, who is being hunted by ICE for deportation.

I would like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Voice with No Echo as it is a top notch thriller but the human cost of the current immigration policies as shown in the novel makes it difficult not to suffer angst, pity and upset. In the afterword the author refers to her work as “controversial” but for an outsider like myself it is hard to see the reality shown in the novel as such. I should point out, however, that there is little discussion on a theoretical or proselytising level (which I hate) it’s more show and tell, allowing the situation to speak for itself. It’s really well done.

The plot line held me enthralled from start to finish. It is quite complicated, full of intertwining threads and relationships, but it seems to flow naturally and is not too difficult to follow during the main narrative although the twists near the end are slightly confusing as they require the reader to remember several prior incidents. The final twist is the best.

At the same time the reunion with Michelle forces Jimmy to take a trip into an episode in his childhood he has no memory of. It’s interesting and adds to the picture of the rather solitary, self sufficient Jimmy Vega.

Voice with No Echo is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Tensions are on the rise in Lake Holly, NY, along with ICE raids and deportations and an anti-immigrant district attorney. Jimmy Vega, cleared of charges in the shooting of an unarmed man, but still on limited duty, responds to a call to that same DA's home. The new wife of the DA, Talia Crowley, has been found hanging in their flooded basement. The police are ready to call it a suicide but will go through the motions, especially in their search for Crowley's immigrant maid. The maid is the niece of Edgar Aviles, the long-time custodian at Beth Shalom Synagogue. When ICE shows up to deport Edgar, the synagogue somewhat reluctantly gives him sanctuary and calls in Adele Figueroa, Jimmy's girlfriend, and the force behind La Casa, the local immigrant advocacy group. Added to the mix is Michelle, the ICE agent sent to supervise the case; she is also Jimmy's estranged half-sister.

Voice With No Echo starts with a bang, and the action doesn't let up. The ugly underbelly of local ICE and police operations is exposed in this case. Jimmy also has to confront some demons from his past. He also must deal with doing what is right as opposed to what is legal, and the fact that sometimes people are not at all what they appear to be. Once again, Suzanne Chazin is even-handed in her characterization of both the immigrant and legal community while spinning an intricate plot.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for an advance digital copy. The opinions are my own.

"What I'm saying is, it's not the big choices that define us. It's the little ones." Zimmerman, Holocaust survivor.
Voice with No Echo by Suzanne Chazin is the fifth book in the Detective Jimmy Vega series. This story could have been taken from today's headlines as the action unfolds in the search for Lissette. Finding Lissette may be the key for answers to the death of her employer which was thought to be a suicide until Jimmy Vega looks at the crime scene and has his suspicions. Vega finds more questions about the death of Talia Crowley, the DA's wife. Edgar Aviles has received a letter from ICE informing him of immediate deportation and he fears his niece Lissette may have been taken by ICE agents because of information she has regarding some undocumented Hispanic workers and the death of Talia Crowley. Edgar contacts Adele, who is also Vega's fiance', who is an advocate for those seeking citizenship in the US. He. seeks sanctuary in the temple where he has been employed for ten years because his wife and son are very ill and need him.
Vega is partnered with ICE agent Michelle Sanchez, a half-sister he has never acknowledged as family. This partnership brings a flood of bad memories from Vega's childhood which begin to haunt him. The story features the unfortunate plight of Hispanics who have lived in the US as productive citizens with work permits for years and suddenly they are facing deportation and the loss of their homes and families. The use of undocumented young girls as sex workers and human trafficking is an atrocious fact in society today. Vega has to make hard choices as he considers he is first and foremost an officer of the law but he also sees a corrupt system within the laws for illegal immigrants.

This title tackles dirty cops and the controversial U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency. The local DA's wife is found hanging in a flooded basement and their undocumented housekeeper is missing. So, of course, clearly an undocumented person must be responsible for the death of the white person. Seriously, Chazin writes these stories so well that I'm forgetting they aren't real although I suspect they are based on very real events happening in real-time in America today.

Anyway. Back to some sort of summary. The undocumented population of Lake Holly, NY have been getting notifications from ICE of impending deportations. This is spreading fear throughout the community and drastic times call for drastic measures. A synagogue is providing sanctuary to a man ICE is actively hunting, Vega's half-sister enters into the story as an ICE agent, and racism is alive and well in Trump's America.

Chazin continues to peel back the layers of Detective Vega by introducing his half-sister, Michelle, into the story and uncovering a layer of trauma Vega didn't even know he had. She also continues to put him in situations where he is pulled between being a cop and being a person of color. This series is so good, and so infuriating, to read.

Suzanne Chazin uses current events to create the background for Voice With No Echo. Most author wouldn't take on the complications of current events, with a large cast of characters and location that are all intertwined to the point everyone at some point will meet. The author is able to keep readers focused to keep from getting lost in the story.

As a readers I found myself lost when it seemed we had already met certain characters in another series or book.

Suzanne Chazin is a top notch Mystery\Thriller writer that this reader will need to go and find her other books.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a advance copy of Suzanne Chazin Voice With No Echo.

Sometimes words are inadequate.

Voice with No Echo is the kind of book that prompts long discussions with friends, first about the story, then about all those emotions it makes you feel and the real-world situations it brings to mind.

Can fiction be intelligent? This book is, though it's also engaging and easy to fall into. It's immersive, intense, suspenseful, and real.

One of the things I love most about Suzanne Chazin's books is the way she writes with empathy from both sides of an issue. This story tackles immigration in a way rarely seen in fiction. Lines between right and wrong are blurred because doing what's right isn't always clear cut or easy. And doing what's wrong might be the only way to survive. We see people at their best and at their worst, and we see the impact as it reverberates throughout a community.

This is the fifth Jimmy Vega Mystery. While it can easily be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading them all.

Love this series! One of my favorites. This was a great series and I loved how it covers many of the current topics of today. (Police Brutality, Immigration, etc) I also enjoy the dynamic between Jimmy and Adele. I love seeing how their work comes into play with their relationship, no matter how hard they try to let it not too. It is one of those books where I can have deep talks about. Jimmy is such a complex character and I love how we got to see his backstory in this. Beautifully written mystery as well.

It took me a while to get into this book but once I did I enjoyed it. I wish there would gave been less characters though as at times that was confusing. I hope there will be a number 6 in this series.
I can't wait to discuss this book with my book club.

Suzanne Chazin’s series with Jimmy Vega gets better with every book. In Voice with No Echo Jimmy is dealing with immigration, missing people, drugs, gangs, murders, and suicide. Chazin is able to take all these issues and make them into a thrilling mystery that will not only impact Jimmy professionally but personally. When the DA’s young wife is found dead in her flooded basement, is it a suicide? Where is the undocumented maid? Where was the DA? Vega’s half-sister Michelle is now working for ICE. Meanwhile, Vega’s girlfriend/activist wife is on the other side of immigration issues. What is the nagging memory that Vega is afraid to remember from his childhood? These questions get answered with lots of excitement along the way. And, there will be may be an inkling of more adventures yet to come in the next book! Highly recommended.

I was so happy to see a new entry into this wonderful series and could not wait to read it. If you like a good mystery with underlying currents of deceit and mistrust, then please add this one to your to read list.

Regardless how you feel about illegal immigrants and the current immigration situation, Ms. Chazin introduces you to a small community with plenty of immigrants just trying to make a living and hoping for legal status, if not for themselves at least for their loved ones. Throw into this mix the murder of the DA's young wife, rogue cops and possible ICE shenanigans of the illegal sort and you have an intriguing story with a thrill of an ending and main character, Jimmy Vega in the thick of it all. This one hits a little too close to home for him and brings to the surface personal feelings he would rather keep hidden.

Highly recommended!

I haven’t read any of the previous Jimmy Vega mysteries, but Voice with No Echo works well as a stand-alone story. Jimmy is a by-the-book county cop with a girlfriend who helps illegal aliens try to get legal status to stay in the country.
Jimmy is giving an elderly man a ride home from synagogue and is introduced to a Salvadoran man who works for the synagogue. He came to the US legally 20 years before on a temporary visa, but lost it when politics caused the visas to be revoked. He is married and has three children (all of them US citizens). His wife has lupus and one child has leukemia, but he is now being threatened with deportation.
Jimmy is called to investigate a possible suicide of the young wife of the DA. The case quickly becomes complicated and murder is suspected. There is underage sex trafficking, ICE, illegal aliens, and the immigration quandary which leads to a complex case. Who can be trusted and what is the right thing to do?
I enjoyed this mystery and the issues it explored.

Voice with No Echo delves deep into police detective Jimmy Vega's shadowy history, as he comes face to face with his past. As is the case in this book series, the legalities of immigration are prominent in the book. Adele Figueroa, Jimmy's immigrant activist girlfriend, tries to help a family threatened to be torn apart.

The novel was a fast read, but I had issues with the plot. The author went for the tired story of corruption and fraud involving immigration, although from a different source than is often the norm. The main characters have no reason to be so trusting, especially because of incidents in their pasts, but they seem to get into trouble for the sake of the plot. This was my least favorite book in the series, for the reasons listed above.

There are so many characters in this novel, I couldn’t keep all the names straight and kind of lost track of who had done what crime. Did I care? Not really. I got the gist of the story, but more importantly, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with characters I’ve become familiar with as I’ve read Jimmy Vega mysteries. Jimmy’s half-sister Michelle is a new addition to the cast, and their growing relationship, with its twists and turns, feels real. I also appreciated the focus on immigrants and the immense challenges that undocumented workers face. Chazin writes about this community with understanding and empathy.

Voice With No Echo grabbed my attention from beginning to end, and I couldn't put it down. Jimmy Vega is a no nonsense police officer who takes his job very seriously, and he also has a heart of gold. He takes in every part of his surroundings, and figures out things from his astute observations. He is very loyal to the people he loves, and he learns a lot about his past, certain things he wasn't even consciously aware of. I love his depth of character, and I learned a lot reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

This series may be difficult for some because of the brutal look at immigration and the many views and prejudices that it highlights.

A well developed plot with characters that inspire, infuriate and break your heart. This story could have been torn from today's headlines. A very real, very sad look at what humans can and do to others because they can. Powerful men and women in power taking advantage of those they are suppose to serve and protect.

I have read all the other Jimmy Vega novels and loved them and couldnt wait for this one.
I was disappointed. Too many characters to keep up with and I thought it was dragging and boring in the beginning. Got better toward the end. Not her best work in my opinion.
