PIER 33

Rate this book
PIER 33 is a tale of family and fate following Michael and Robb Field, two brothers who could not be more unalike. Michael, the eldest, views life with a particularly critical lens. He has always felt like the black sheep of society, wishing nothing more than to break free of the routine that paralyzes the rest of humanity. Robb, on the other hand, is content in all the ways Michael is not. A million-dollar home, promising career and loving family provide the stability that was missing in his youth as the Field family's adopted son. Upon taking a mutually dreaded trip to tour Alcatraz Island, the two soon find themselves battling much more than life's daily ups and downs. The former prison is at the core of these new conflicts as Michael is flung back in time, witnessing firsthand many of the historical events and characters that shaped the prison’s infamous reputation. Meanwhile, Robb is left to deal with the consequences following the disappearance of his estranged brother. Is it reality . . . or is it all just a distant dream?

I appreciate good historical fiction that is well- researched and leaves you feeling like you have been there. This story juxtapositions the Alcatraz of yesterday to what it is now through a tenuous relationship between two brothers. The interplay of these two characters with the inmates brings creative suspense. Notice that the chapter titles are names of songs during the different time periods - another example of the author bringing you into this incredible story. Highly recommended.

Loved this book.

It brought me back to San Francisco and into the world of Alcatraz when it was an operational maximum security prison.

Pretty good at predicting the ending of your reads? Not with this one! Loved the twist ending. It was hard to put down and the pages turned themselves! Highly recommend!

Pier 33 reels you in, hooks you, and doesn’t let you go until the end. The characters, plot and setting all give you a great picture of what Alcatraz was like during the time the island was a functioning prison. I would recommend Pier 33 to any and all historical fiction lovers!

Wow!! I LOVED this book, amazing turn of events and the arc of the adventure was fantastic! Beautifully written descriptions of people, places and emotions that made you feel like you were there. I read much of it on the train and found myself audibly gasping and then holding my breath!! I can’t wait for the next Nick Janicki book.
