An engaging collection of polished literary fiction gems. My favorites include “Geraldine the Powerful,” “At Night She Came Alive,” and “Autumn Leaves.”

I love a bit of flash fiction. So much can be said in such a small number of words and Dreena Collins makes every word count. The short story writer’s mantra “Get in, share, get out” applies here. The briefest glimpse tells us so much about the characters and their lives, you feel you know more than is being shared in the visit to their lives. Flash fiction requires a skill it is clear Dreena Collins has mastered.

A Lovely Collection...…..

This is a lovely collection of short stories. There is a good variety within the pages and many of the stories are rather moving, with characters that will stay with you in time. The stories are very well written and provide a really nice introduction into short stories and to flash fiction more specifically. I'm relatively new to reading short stories and this was my first encounter with flash fiction and was not disappointed.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading the different stories, I had originally intended on reading one each evening, but ended up reading the whole book over a couple of days. They got rather addictive to read. Additionally, I though the book cover was quiet striking and I would recommend the collection to anyone looking to read flash fiction and short stories. I will also look out for the author in future.

"Bird Wing" is a collection of flash fiction works by Dreena Collins. Reading one of Collins' stories is something akin to splitting the atom. On the outside, they are small, round, and harmless. But once opened, they explode with power, impact, and precision. As a reader, I often found myself sitting in the epicentre, the eye of the storm, marvelling at what had just happened. As flash infers, this happens which such a dizzying speed. The temptation is to go back, again and again, like a greedy child rifling through a bag of dangerous sweets. What will the next one taste like?
I thoroughly recommend "Bird Wing" to any reader. The book is particularly suitable for those who like to dip in and out, but beware! The resonance of the stories will stay with you for days.

Another great collection!

Collins explains in the foreword of Bird Wing, “...I have deliberately slashed my word count, testing myself to ‘write tight’ and to fit as much power as possible into as few words as I can.” She succeeded to such a degree that some of the stories, not unlike poetry, are open to interpretation. They challenged me to read between the lines and wonder if other readers would come to the same conclusions I did. These are savory little morsels to nibble on and discuss over coffee.

Dreena has an effortless, sublime command of the language; a way of expressing even the most delicate of human emotions in a profoundly meaningful manner. A very talented writer. Highly recommend!

This is an interesting collection of flash collection, with word count running between 260 and 1000, as well as a section of 100 word stories. In her introduction she explains she has been practicing slashing her word count and has therefore become more experimental in her writing, this becomes clear as you absorb her stories.

Dreena’s writing is evocative and even poetic in places. Some of her flash pieces are very open to interpretation and left me scratching my head! (For example ‘The edge’ I’m looking at you!)

I’ve only recently discovered the flash fiction genre and am finding it’s a great way to ‘re-set’ in between regular reads. it took me quite a while to finish this book, not because it was difficult to read, but because each story has an impact that needs time to marinate so it felt to me like it would be doing it an injustice to read multiple pieces in one sitting.

This is a masterful collection. The writing is elegant and absorbing, with striking descriptions. Many of the stories left me thinking and I enjoyed the variety. Much to be savoured here, whether you're a fan of the form or not.

Before Bird Wing, I had forgotten how much fun flash fiction can be. Dreena has done a fantastic job with this collection and I highly recommend this whether you are a fan of flash or just curious.

There is no doubt in my mind that Dreena Collins will be nothing but success with the talent she has demonstrated with this up and coming classic.

Not since Henry Rollins published “Black Coffee Blues” have I been this excited about flash fiction, thank you Dreena because of you I have fallen in love again.

I’m giving Bird Wing 5 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and Dreena has earned and deserves every one of them.

If you haven’t read it I highly recommend that you do. Flash fiction is back baby!

Another wonderful set of stories from Ms Collins. Writing a “traditional” novel is obviously a skill but composing a big handful of bite sized entertainment each with its own special focus is a real accomplishment. Each little story is lsmall and beautifully formed. Well worth a read.
